I do understand the need for a full-feature film or TV series or a sequel novel to have the main couple, even if they're a deeply loving one, not always be harmonious, to have a conflict, arguments, or even a huge fight. And it makes sense, especially with a couple going through hardship or after having survived a crisis. Especially when in Dracula they record only 1 fight which descalates quickly, and Nosferatu having none given it's a short silent film... The problem is whenever They try to give conflict for Jonathan and Mina during or after the events, it boils down to 'you don't give me the sex good/you could never live up to the hot vamp daddy/the three hot vamp women.' It's boring. And now it seems a similar case with the Hutters will happen. The issue is (aside from them in the original excitedly touching, kissing and him being enamored by her weirdness) such conflict is more suitable for a tv drama than for a horror. This is a long way to ask, can you think of a suitable interpersonal conflict for the Hutters? (not asking about the Harkers because it'd require a long answer as it's more complicated and it'd also depend on when it's set)

There is one in the 1922 film actually! It's just broken in half (front end and near climax) and is very quickly glazed over.

The conflict: Thomas denying Ellen's warnings concerning the Orlok business.

At the start, Ellen gets whacked with the psychic !!!DANGER!!!YOUR BELOVED DAMSEL DITZ MAN IS HEADING TO CERTAIN DOOM!!! alarm and begs/warns Thomas not to go where Knock means to send him. He laughs this off as mere worry at being separated or general anxiety and goes moseying his way off to Orlok. Strike One.

Strike Two is subtle. It relies on Thomas getting a dose of Jonathan Harker's original post-Transylvania malady: He assumes that his nightmarish nocturnal experiences with Orlok were not real. The text cards explicitly point out that he believes reading the little book of lore about Nosferatu from the inn influenced his nightmares/visions/madness/fever /[insert whatever makes Orlok being Nosferatu NOT REAL]. He tells Ellen to leave the book alone too, fearing the same will befall her.

She reads it. She and Thomas have a confrontation in the bedroom and she points out their window.

"That is what I look at--every night!"

Thomas looks out.

Orlok is there, staring at them from the ruined house he bought to lurk across from them. And Thomas tries to laugh it off--even as Ellen leaves the room--and he must look out the window again. Seeing Orlok. Seeing the truth.

Implying that he has been seeing Orlok all this time, and Ellen declaring she sees him too has burst the bubble of desperate disbelief that shielded him from acknowledging reality. He is not dreaming. He is not mad. He is sane and Ellen's warnings should have been heeded all along. Orlok and all his danger are real and present. Thomas collapses, hiding and weeping in his arms crossed upon the bed.

It is tragically a bit shaped like the classic 'supernatural-proof Guy does not believe Girl who says supernatural things are happening,' but I think something could be played with in a broader adaptation with not just Ellen, but Thomas being privy to Odd Supernatural Pings and just...ignoring it as a rule. There is good drama to harvest in the concept of

1) Someone who fears he's mad, but knows how to perform otherwise, who falls in love with

2) Someone who knows she isn't mad despite the supernatural pings and weirdness about her and does not hide it, followed by

3) Tweaking Eggers' clunky ugly marital spat into something in the vein of 'We are not in a society that is kind to the eccentric. I can mask myself. She either cannot or won't. This puts her in danger. If we wed, I can be a wall between her and those who would rather shove her into Dr. Sievers' care.'

Fairyverse is a world where I imagine that background music is always playing; ever so softly, that you can hardly hear it. This is because I personally must listen to music whenever I write, and that music needs to be cherry-picked to fit the theme of whatever story/scene/character I’m currently engaged in.

Now, there are a few tracks I will listen to when I write general information regarding Fairyverse (I have a whole playlist but there are a few musical scores I go back to all the time), and I thought I might share them with you all, so that you may hear the general theme/vibe I’m going for.

I think I will also add the tracks I have (sort of) given to some of my characters as their supposed theme songs in Fairyverse. Is it their actual theme? No, but it is the tracks that sort of just clicked in my mind as being “theirs”, so to speak.

Also, not all fairies will be listed here, mostly just because I haven’t found a specific track that clicks with them yet, but I’ll be sure to update this post when that day inevitably comes around.

Movie Review | L.A. Takedown (Mann, 1989)

This is obviously nobody's favourite Michael Mann movie, but despite not being a hardcore Mann-head (nothing against the guy, I just haven't really dug in past a certain point), I did find this interesting to consider within the context of his career. This is obviously in the shadow of Heat, and you can see embryonic forms of the latter movie's iconic scenes rendered in a crisp, televisual style. But there's a fair bit of Miami Vice in this one's DNA, and I'm not just saying that because I've been obsessed with that show for the last few months. I mean, even the title plays like a response to that show. (If you must know, I just finished the entire series a few days ago. I suppose I should write something about the finale, but in any case, our long national nightmare of me bringing up the show at every opportunity is finally over... NOT!) 

You get a neon-tinged nighttime driving scene like the famous "In the Air Tonight" montage from the pilot episode "Brother's Keeper", although the music choice here, Billy Idol's cover of "L.A. Woman", is a lot more on the nose. (I do think this movie makes better use of it when it recycles it towards the end, accentuating the verve of the final showdown.) But the visual style, with the extra dark interior and nocturnal scenes and sunburnt daytime scenes, brings to mind the look of the not particularly beloved (but still worthwhile, in my opinion) fifth season. Apparently Mann shot this unusually quickly, and he's understandably unable to give L.A. the same curated sense of visual identity he achieved through the extensive location scouting in Vice, but there is an interesting squarish sense of geometry to the movie. Obviously some of that comes with the realities of architecture (buildings and their fixtures only come in certain shapes), but the rigid angles extend to the screen composition and even the action, which is often captured either perpendicularly or directly aligned to us. Despite the relatively bloodless confines of network television, the violence here has a real kick.

And with Vice's casting director Bonnie Timmermann involved, you unsurprisingly get a season's worth of great character actors packed into this. Best is Xander Berkeley as Waingro, playing his character like a more deranged Bruce Willis. Worst, surprisingly, are Scott Plank and Alex McArthur in the Al Pacino and Robert De Niro roles, respectively. Obviously when you're put up against two all time great actors, it's hard to measure up, but you can just look at the coffee scene here to see just how much they come up short. Plank is doing a lot of the shouting that I assumed was Pacino's contribution, and absolutely not pulling it off. Especially bad are the shouting matches he has with his wife, played by Ely Pouget from "Junk Love", who despite her valiant efforts, is given nothing by Plank to play off of. While I haven't seen Heat in some time, I remember the relationship stuff being the worst part, and that's definitely the case here. I should note that the copy I watched on YouTube dropped the audio for a few minutes late in the movie, but it was during these boring ass relationship drama scenes, so I probably didn't miss much. At least when Crockett or Tubbs had bad luck with women, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas could pull off the material, and there were often wild and highly entertaining twists to boot, like in "Definitely Miami" and "Little Miss Dangerous". 

Apparently NBC offered to pick this up if Mann replaced Plank as the lead, which Mann refused to do, so it never went to series. I respect Mann's loyalty to his guy... but Plank sucks and NBC was right to want to replace him.

So I recently played this otome...

It's called "Nocturne of Nightmares" made bt Genius inc. What attracted me initially was the visuals, they're SO good, which you don't really see in much otomes sadly. It's got an element of horror in it, although I didn't feel spooked out but it was more of an emotional ride. The plot really is interesting and has certain twists.

The characters feel realistic, they all have their weak aspects and an overall nice dynamic. The game takes delving into a person's personality really seriously, and the MC isn't all useless either.

I just finished it and I'm disappointed at the fact that this game doesnt seem to have caught the attention it deserves- the plot certainly isn't shallow, and no character is a jerk, although the starting feels a bit typical, the rest surely isn't.

There's Thoma, Subaru, Ray, and Licht (I eventually settled on Ray) the otome is a little different in the sense that you can actually have special interactions with any member throughout and can choose your favourite at one point. Although it does have those premium choice requiring diamonds, it's not as if the only possible way is through payment (you can win coins simply by quickly tapping thrice on the slot machine, unlimited) so I do hope that people give this game a shot.
