Last year a driver hit my partner while she was riding the bike she got from her dad when she was a teenager. The bike got dragged under the SUV for blocks as the driver sped away and it actually took weeks and the help of local bike shop Spun (fantastic people) to help us get it back.
Let's skip over how incredibly shitty it is to hit a cyclist and then speed away with their bike under your SUV for a second. (My partner is fine, by the way -- luckily she was to the side of the vehicle when it rushed away with her bike).
When we finally located it, there were telltale paint ripples along the tubes near the lugs, a sign the frame was bent and no longer safe to ride. An enormous bummer because as you can imagine, the bike had huge emotional significance for her.
I spent months tracking down the same frame, same size before finding its identical match. It was even a really reasonable price!
Her dad bought the Crescent brand frame new in the 1970s. The company started in America in the early 20th Century before moving to Sweden, where this bike was made. Crescent produced a range of bikes that looked pretty similar -- many of them this pumpkin orange color, but some of them white or a pale blue that looks pretty sweet. (Think Boo-Berry blue). Those bikes ranged in quality from department store tanks to ones like this -- beautiful lugwork, Reynolds 531 steel, really light and sturdy for a steel bike.
After finding the frame I built it up at our local co-op MoBo. I was able to find a sweet set of wheels with Campagnolo Chorus hubs and Mavic rims that just glide forever. The components are a bit of a mash-up: Shimano 600 derailleurs, Campy brakes, and a really sick Zeus crank from the era. It's got some unusual details -- the Nitto bars are extra-wide tandem bars with the brake hoods up high for extra stability on gravel and dirt. The high and wide riding position is really great if you're getting into chunky stuff, I think. I got all this stuff for next to nothing. A little donated time and money for pretty much everything you'd need to build a bike. Bless bike co-ops.
Speaking of chunky stuff -- the frame fits 33mm tires (!!). We started with the Kenda Kwicks pictured here but Challenge had a really deep sale on its Grifo clinchers so they're on there now. (All hail the classic Challenge Grifo, btw).
Finishing touches: Newbaum's bartape treated with amber shellac, tooled leather saddle and a matching-ish converted camera carrying case handlebar bag.
Eventually we'd like to cold-set the rear triangle to comfortably get a 135mm rear hub in there with a nice wide gear range. She's been chasing QOMs on Cincy's big hills on this thing because she's a maniac and a bigger cassette would make that easier. (She doesn't really need the help though she's crushing it). We might also eventually invest in a Velo Orange crankset with smaller chainrings. Gonna hold on to that Zeus crank though... These old frames are incredible and I really prefer this bike to mine ride quality wise. It feels effortless on pavement, dirt, gravel, etc. If I ever find one of those pale blue ones in my size made of Reynolds 531, I might have to sell my daily rider to build it up.

Fuel Efficiency and Tyres
Many drivers are looking for methods to improve efficiency and cut down on gasoline use as fuel costs continue to climb. The tires you choose for your car are one sometimes disregarded component that may have a big influence on how fuel-efficient it is. But how precisely can tires impact fuel efficiency? In this blog, we’ll explore the connection between tyres and fuel economy and offer practical advice to help you make informed decisions that benefit both your wallet and the environment.
What is Fuel Economy?
Fuel economy is commonly measured in litres per 100 kilometers (L/100km) or miles per gallon (MPG), and it relates to how much fuel your car consumes to go a certain distance. As economic and environmental issues become more pressing, fuel economy is a primary aim for both automobile buyers and manufacturers alike. However, various factors beyond your engine’s efficiency-like vehicle maintenance, driving habits, and tyre condition-play a significant role in determining your car’s fuel economy.
How Do Tyres Impact Fuel Efficiency?
Tyres are one of the most vital components of your vehicle when it comes to fuel consumption. Your vehicle may come with a specified fuel efficiency rating, but this figure can fluctuate based on several factors, including the tyres you choose. Selecting tyres that are optimized for fuel efficiency can make a difference in how much fuel you consume over time. Here’s how tyres influence your fuel efficiency:
Here’s how tyres influence your fuel efficiency:
1. Rolling Resistance
One of the key ways tyres affect fuel consumption is through rolling resistance-the force required to keep the tyres moving forward. The higher the rolling resistance, the more energy (and fuel) your vehicle will require to maintain its speed. Low rolling resistance tires are particularly engineered to reduce this force, lowering the energy required to keep the vehicle moving. Tyres with a low rolling resistance can result in significant fuel savings, especially on longer journeys.
2. Tyre Size and Weight
Because they have a larger surface area in contact with the road, larger tires often have a higher rolling resistance, which can result in an increase in fuel consumption. Similarly, heavy tyres add to your vehicle’s overall weight, requiring more power to accelerate. By choosing tyres that are lightweight and appropriately sized for your vehicle, you can reduce fuel consumption and improve fuel efficiency.
3. Tyre Tread
Tire tread patterns are designed to handle a range of driving conditions, such as uneven or muddy ground. However, certain aggressive tread patterns increase rolling resistance and hence decrease fuel efficiency. Tyres with less aggressive tread or those specifically engineered for fuel efficiency can reduce the drag caused by increased friction between the road and the tyre surface
Choosing the Right Tyres for Fuel Efficiency
When purchasing new tyres, especially from an online tyre shop, you should consider those that are engineered to enhance fuel efficiency. Many reputable tyre manufacturers offer tyres that are optimized for both performance and economy. Brands like Yokohama, Maxxis, BlackBear, BFGoodrich, Toyo, Kenda, and Nitto produce eco-friendly tyres designed to reduce rolling resistance and, in turn, fuel consumption. Here’s how these brands are contributing to fuel efficiency:
Yokohama Tyres : Known for its eco-friendly “BluEarth” range, these tyres are built with advanced rubber compounds and low rolling resistance technology to reduce fuel consumption.
Maxxis Tyres : Offers a range of tyres with low rolling resistance, especially suited for passenger cars and light trucks, helping to enhance fuel economy.
BFGoodrich Tyres : This brand specializes in tyres designed for durability, but it also produces models optimized for on-road performance, including improved fuel efficiency.
NittoTyres : Known for its high-performance tyres, Nitto also offers products that balance performance and fuel efficiency, making them a good option for everyday driving.
Choosing tyres with an excellent fuel efficiency rating can save you money in the long run, reducing both your fuel consumption and your vehicle’s CO2 emissions.
Key Factors Influencing Fuel Efficiency
Your tyres aren’t the only factor influencing how much fuel your vehicle consumes. Several maintenance and driving habits also play a role:
1. Tyre Inflation
Keeping your tyres properly inflated is crucial for fuel efficiency. Underinflated tyres have more contact with the road, increasing rolling resistance and, subsequently, fuel consumption. In contrast, overinflated tires can result in uneven treadwear and poor handling. Check your tire pressure on a regular basis, preferably once a month, to ensure it is consistent with the manufacturer’s guidelines.
2. Tyre Condition
Worn or damaged tyres can significantly impact fuel efficiency. The rolling resistance produced by tires with uneven tread wear increases engine output and fuel consumption. Examine your tires on a regular basis for signs of wear and replace them as necessary.
3. Driving Habits
Your driving habits also influence your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Rapid acceleration and hard braking increase fuel consumption, whereas smoother driving with gradual acceleration and braking can help conserve fuel. On highways, cruise control may assist maintain a steady pace, which can increase fuel efficiency.
4. Wheel Alignment
Your car will use more fuel if its wheels are out of alignment because they produce more drag. Ensure that your wheels have the proper alignment to enhance fuel economy and extend the life of your tires.
5. Vehicle Load
Carrying too much weight in your car might lower fuel efficiency. The higher the load, the more fuel your engine need to drive the car. To reduce your car’s weight, take out anything that isn’t essential.
Practical Tips to Improve Fuel Economy with Tyres
Now that we understand how tyres and other factors affect fuel efficiency, here are some practical tips to help you improve your vehicle’s fuel economy:
Choose Low Rolling Resistance Tyres: Opt for tyres that are specifically designed to reduce rolling resistance and improve fuel efficiency. Look for tyres with energy-saving or eco-friendly labels.
Maintain Proper Tyre Pressure: Regularly check and maintain your tyre pressure at the manufacturer’s suggested levels. Fuel economy might drop noticeably if your tires are underinflated.
Rotate Your Tyres: Regular tire rotation guarantees even tread wear, which can aid in fuel economy. Most experts recommend rotating your tyres every 10,000 kilometers or as specified in your vehicle’s owner manual.
Monitor Tread Depth: Make sure your tires have enough tread depth on a regular basis. If the tread is too worn, it is necessary to change the tires. Worn tires not only compromise your safety, but they also lower your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
Consider Tyre Size: Consult your vehicle’s manufacturer guidelines before upsizing your tyres. Although they may have a more pleasing appearance, larger tires might use more fuel and have more rolling resistance.
Get Regular Wheel Alignments : Misaligned wheels cause drag, which makes your engine work harder and consumes more fuel. Get your wheel alignment checked on a regular basis, particularly if you observe uneven tire wear.
Conclusion: Tyres Matter for Fuel Efficiency
While factors like engine size and driving conditions certainly affect fuel consumption, your tyres play a surprisingly large role in determining your vehicle’s overall fuel efficiency. Proper tire selection, consistent tire inflation, and safe driving practices may all significantly reduce your car’s fuel consumption.
If you’re in the market for new tyres, consider visiting a reliable online tyre shop or a local store like Buds Tyres to find tyres that meet both your performance needs and fuel efficiency goals. On the Gold Coast, tyre brands like Yokohama, BFGoodrich, and Nitto are popular choices that provide eco-friendly options for drivers. You may increase your car’s fuel efficiency, reduce your fuel expenses, and help create a more sustainable future by choosing your tires wisely.
What are the best tyres for improving fuel efficiency?
Eco-friendly tyres from brands like Yokohama and Maxxis are designed for lower rolling resistance, which improves fuel efficiency.
How often should I check my tyre pressure?
It’s advisable to check your tyre pressure at least once a month to ensure optimal fuel efficiency and safety.
Where can I buy reliable tyres online?
You can find reliable tyres at an online tyre shop offering a wide range of brands like BFGoodrich, Toyo, and Kenda. Be sure to choose a shop with a good reputation and customer reviews.

NMRA & NMCA to Cease Production of Motorsport Events Beyond 2024
ProMedia LLC, home of the NMRA Ford Nationals (since 1999) and NMCA Muscle Car Nationals (since 1988), has made the very difficult decision to cease production of motorsport events beyond 2024. Despite our best efforts, the company could not overcome significant challenges that include losing 4 of our 5 largest pre-Covid revenue-producing events, losing Auto Club Speedway for our NMCA WEST series, declining sponsor and advertising revenues, substantial inflationary price increases and, most recently, the devastating effect Hurricane Helene had on the NMRA World Finals, our company’s largest net profit event. ProMedia and our entire team sincerely thank our racers and fans for many years of dedicated support and passion for muscle car performance. We appreciate our sponsors for their longterm friendship and loyalty, most especially our series sponsors, Holley and Red Line Oil. Our track partners are the best in the business and we’re proud to call them our friends. Finally, we have been truly blessed having the most dedicated and talented employees and event staff in the business made up of true professionals and wonderful people. Because we'll be ceasing operations, ProMedia is unable to attend the PRI Show this December. We extend heartfelt congratulations to all NMRA and NMCA class champions and Top-10 finishers for an outstanding season of competition. Each class champion will be sent a custom package that includes their Nitto Tire Diamond Tree World Champion ring, a World Champion Victor award and a custom-embroidered World Champion jacket. We had hoped to present these items in person at the PRI ceremonies, however, Hurricane Helene proved too fierce an adversary. Please wear your jackets and rings with pride for your amazing accomplishments. Although NMRA and NMCA will not be racing into the future, there are many other incredible series, events, and racetracks that need your patronage, whether as a participant or fan. Please continue supporting great series like NHRA, PDRA, Street Car Takeover and No Prep Kings. Please get out and attend amazing events like LS Fest, World Series of Pro Mod, No Mercy, Lights Out, Snowbird Nationals, MoParty, U.S. Street Nationals, Mod Motor Nationals, YellowBullet Nationals, Drag Week, Power Tour and Sick Week. And especially please support all of our most recent racetrack partners including Summit Motorsports Park, Beech Bend Raceway Park, US 131 Motorsports Park, Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Gainesville Raceway, Rockingham Dragway, World Wide Technology Raceway and Bradenton Motorsports Park. Our key industry trade associations, PRI and SEMA, need your backing as they fight for your right to race and enjoy your performance vehicles. Finally, please encourage our media partners who have covered NMRA and NMCA events and patronize great drag racing print publications like Drag Illustrated and National Dragster. Stay tuned on NMRA and NMCA’s social media channels for yearend content and more information. Our home office will be open through mid-December as our remaining team takes us past the finish line. Finally, we're fortunate to live in the greatest country in the world, a nation blessed by God well before the words “In God We Trust” became a national slogan. Each NMRA and NMCA event has always praised God and country with a Saturday starting line invocation and national anthem followed by a Sunday morning chapel service. In closing, God bless you, God bless America, and God bless the NMRA and NMCA. Sincerely, ProMedia & Our Entire Staff NMRA Ford Nationals NMCA Muscle Car Nationals Read the full article
