Where Are You?

Oneshot – (FFN) (AO3)

Summary:

After the Crystal King's defeat, Vania thought everything was supposed to be peaceful. Then the Merge came, throwing Shintaro into chaos. To make it even worse, she hasn't heard from Cole since it happened…

It wasn’t long ago when Vania, Queen of Shintaro, thought everything really was going to work out. 

Now that hope was only in her daydreams and memories.

The fierce battle against the Crystal King had tested everyone, from greatest to least. When Vania heard of the battle, she marshalled her forces as fast as she could– of course, a militia was hard to muster quickly, and the royal guard was small. As soon as her men were gathered, and supplies were prepared, they set out at full tilt to Ninjago City, the center of the battle.

They arrived not a moment too soon, sweeping through the enemy forces, crushing Vengestone soldiers to dust beneath their feet. Vania spearheaded the attack, with Chompy, Hailmar, and the Upply at her side.

She would never forget her dear Cole’s face when he saw her, grinning from ear to ear, flushed from fighting. What a sight! The light in his eyes, the hope they shared, the moment when they knew all was not yet lost.

The Ninja took on their dragon forms, the ultimate form of Spinjitzu, and the battle was all but won in that moment. Too bright to look at, too powerful to stop. Vania barely knew what had happened; a moment later, everything was in motion.

Spinning, whirling motion.

The battled raged on, and she heard distant snippets of Cole’s fight against her father:

“You turned my people against me, turned my own daughter against me!”

“Oh, that! Yeah, kinda brought that on yourself.”

“Lies!”

There was a horrible thud , shaking the buildings nearby, and Vania jumped into action to spur Chompy forward. They swooped in, just as she heard her father’s last horrible taunt.

“The Crystal King wanted you for himself. Lucky for me, he isn’t here to see this.”

Panic flooded her vision. In retrospect, Vania didn’t know what she’d done, but her father was lying prone on the ground and Cole had gone to rendezvous with his team…

Only the last stand remained.

Just before the end of it all, Cole had swept down on his dragon wings (she didn’t know where they’d come from) and given her a tight, warm hug that she wished had been just a little bit longer.

It was momentary, before he swept away on his dragon wings once again, and left her to deal with the army. He headed for the Crystal King, the Overlord– it was the greatest battle of their lifetimes– the Ninja prepared to strike down their hated foe–

–and they won!

Vania recalled again, how they had celebrated the defeat of the Crystal King. How everyone had come together to rebuild the city and the Monastery of Spinjitzu. How Cole had told her all about his adventure, from saving Nya’s life to his brief stint in prison to the battle they had just fought.

She remembered how it felt to press a kiss to his cheek before she left, hoping that he would accept it.

She knew with certainty that his bewildered smile was enough to sustain her heart. No matter the distance between them, no matter how long they were apart.

She was wrong.

When Vania returned home with her victorious army, with gifts from the people of Ninjago City, something was wrong in a small, subtle way. 

An odd trinket appeared here or there that didn’t belong. 

There were some strange weather patterns and odd lights in the sky.

Vania swore she’d seen magenta light in the corner of her room… surely it was just more of those tiny crystals even her best laundresses couldn’t get out of the fibers of her battle dress. She’d shed them for weeks after the battle.

Then it got worse. 

Shintaro had always had earthquakes. They were a consequence of the extensive cave system, plus the instability of recent years. Plus, the city was built near one of the largest faultlines in Ninjago! Minor quakes were common, and their only real consequences were the rockslides which blocked some of the mountain passes. This was normal. Expected, even.

They ignored the little earthquakes which shook Shintaro until three struck within the same week, each of them strong enough to topple already unstable buildings.

Unfamiliar storms raged. 

Rain poured and then suddenly stopped. 

Crops failed. 

Everything became unstable.

The Merge came, and none of it mattered much anymore. A great tear formed in the sky, magenta and shining brighter than the sun over the city of Shintaro. The Mergequakes began, and Vania watched as her people struggled to find safety as their mountain home seemed to fuse into something else– somewhere else–  anything but their old, familiar landscape.

The Merged Lands formed, with Shintaro suddenly bordered by a strange, wild land that had a large floating island hovering above it. The whole place was teeming with blue light and filled with strange, bipedal animals! Lions, birds, reptiles, and more…

Helpless to stop the chaos, Queen Vania directed her people, desperate to protect them. She ordered her soldiers to help evacuate the citizens, and the people did their best to prevent their city from crumbling to the very foundations. The Munce and Geckles surfaced to help, with their superior knowledge of stonecraft contributing greatly to the effort.

The aftershocks died away after a time, eternity yet only a moment.

Slowly, so slowly, everything started coming back together.

Eventually, a tense peace came back.

Queen Vania sighed heavily, leaning back in her throne. Holding court had been a low priority for so long that now there were more petitions and emergencies than ever before. She’d never been so sleepless before. 

She took a moment to summon the energy to deal with at least one more matter. “Hailmar, is there anyone left to meet with?”

The Captain of the Royal Guard shook his head. “No, your Highness. Just a report from the scouts.”

“Oh, thank the Master!” She closed her eyes, slumping tiredly against one of the armrests on her tall white throne. “What do they have to say?”

Hailmar cleared his throat, rustling through papers until he found the right one. “Mugwort says that they have come to the end of the changed landscape to the north. However, they’ve noticed very few Shintaran Ridgebacks, and several empty nests.”

Vania hummed, unable to stir up more energy. “More?”

“Yes, ma’am. This makes seven empty nests between all the scouting parties.”

“It’s not mating season. Why are they gone so early?”

“I’m afraid we don’t know. However, Steele said he noticed signs of some kind of struggle, and scorch marks on the walls of the cave where they found one of the nests. They seem to be from the strange drones we noticed the other week. He suggested that perhaps the dragons are not leaving willingly, but are being… dragon-napped, as it were.”

Vania opened her eyes, frowning deeply. She looked over at Hailmar, noting his grave expression. “What about our letter to the Ninja? Have they responded yet?”

He shook his head. “No, ma’am. No response of any kind to any of the letters we’ve sent. There’s been no sightings of them anywhere.”

Vania watched him for a moment, then sighed. “...I see. What else did Mugwort say?”

“Nothing else of importance. Just samples and reports about the strange plants and animals they’ve seen. I have forwarded those reports to the royal botanists, zoologists, and geologists for continued study.”

“Very good.” She nodded. “If that’s all, then… I think I’ll retire to my rooms.”

“As you wish.” Hailmar offered her a smile. “Would you care for an escort?”

“Thank you, but no. I want to be alone.” She smiled in return, but she knew it was unconvincing. “Let’s talk about this more over supper.”

With those parting remarks, she rose from her throne. The golden wings mounted on her back lifted her up, and she descended the stairs, coming to rest on the ground at the base of the dais. She walked out of the throne room, a small contingent of guards following her, and wearily made her way to her rooms.

When she was finally alone (as alone as a queen could be, considering how strange their world had become), she fell forward onto her bed with a heavy sigh.

No answer.

With a heavy heart, she strained her arms behind her to unclip her wing harness, unwilling to get up. Once they were off and pushed to the foot of her bed, she reached under her pillows to pull out a framed picture. It was one of herself and Cole, long before any of her current worries had existed.

Just looking at it made her frown, exhausted tears coming to her eyes, heart aching. 

“There’s been no sightings of them anywhere.”

Where are you?

There were no answers. What had happened to the Ninja in the Merge? Even now, she was only hearing the most vague rumors about the Green Ninja re-appearing, or perhaps just some impostor, running around with a baby dragon and children dressed in orange and pink. It was so hard to get news from Ninjago City, and now that they’d renamed themselves The Crossroads, it was even more confusing.

It didn’t matter. They weren’t her Cole.

She let herself rest face-down on the bed, weak tears running down her cheeks, dripping off the tip of her nose to wet the duvet. 

She couldn’t make herself believe he was dead. If he were dead, there would be proof of it! 

…right?

She laid there wondering, thinking of when she’d last seen him: banged-up, victorious, slowly relaxing after the last threat to the balance was eradicated. Smiling, working hard, celebrating with his family in a way she just couldn’t interrupt.

She'd made a promise to herself then:

Next time. Next time, I'll tell him how I feel. I can't spoil this moment. 

Now there might never be a next time. Cole might never be coming back to her, or to anyone .

Nothing was okay anymore.

Kai Recs:

All I've Ever Known: One of the best kind of fics- Kai having to cope with team bonding during the events of the pilots <3(I have very obvious tastes). But! Has a lot of introspective Kai moments and outrospective (?) moments with him and the future team he's one day never going to imagine a time without.

Spice, and Everything Nice: Kai, in both a show of brotherly love and brotherly pride, attempts to outdo his siblings in a test of all things spice and chocolate. It's just so cute aaaaaaa!!!!

Bonfire: Lloyd wants to make a fire, Zane tries to offer suggestions, and Kai makes it personal. Slice of Life fic that would have made for a nice little episode during Season 2, honestly! And a nice look at the characters outside of their normally hectic settings~

Flicker: A story about Kai and the warmth he brings to himself and others, doesn't seem like much at first but you will be gutpunched by love and softness by the end~

Bucket List: In the category of angst and Kai with probably a guilty pleasure fic of mine, Kai strikes a deal with Morro and a horrifying journey of self-discovery ensues. It get a little dark but it's funny, gripping, heart-wrenching, and will probably have you looking at Kai in a new light by the end of it.

N Stands for Neutral: Kai teaches Lloyd to drive, chaos ensues, nuff said

Why Birds Fly: Probably not for the squeamish around eggs, insects, or ear-related agony (it's not nearly as bad as I'm making it sound I promise just being cautious) BUT another non-life-threatening crisis story that has an amazing dynamic between Kai, Cole and Jay, and their tendency to be both the best brothers you could ask for and the absolute worst.

The Process of Making Amends: Kai and Garmadon butting head and it's goes about as well as you'd expect....but, there is one thing they can reach a consensus on.

Going, Going, Gone: Vintage Classic on kai's take on Skylor throughout Season 4. Definitely Kailor, but also not exactly "shippy". It really is more of a character examination in the form of lil snippets and it lives in my mind rent-free.

From What It Was: Kai reflects on all the changes in the team post-s7. It makes me misty-eyed every time ;w;

Kai and the Futile Fist Fight: Anyone wanna see Kai and Jay have a real fight during Crystalized, with 50% more awesome fight moves and 50% more raw emotion and 100% more Kai being distressed over his sister in his own way? Here ya go!

"Mr. Smith" At Your Service: Kai pretends to be Nya's father. Nya gets far too much of a kick out of it, and it goes about a well as you'd expect snksnksnk

broken pieces: More Pilots!ninja bonding, short and sweet and ofc with a special focus on Kai! Left a very big impression on me, haha

this isn't how it's supposed to be: MOAR PILOT BONDINGGGGGGG and UNGH it's so BEAUTIFUL, especially love the character dialogue in this one!

“E?? E!” The word echoed down the brick lined street. Quick tapping of steel toed boots accompanied the repeated yells.

Morro hurriedly rushed down each backstreet, and checked over each pile of junk. His bottom lip was red from worrying it.

“FSM-damnit, ECHO?!” he shouted, and heard his voice repeat, although quieter each time.

A quiet whir of recognition returned his call.

The wind master darted towards the sound; his boots kicked up some caked dirt on the ground.

���E?! Where are yo-”

There, curled up against the graffitied wall and splayed in broken parts, laid Mr. E.

“Wh- y-” the dark haired boy stumbled over words as his fleshy disgusting solid hands hovered over the frayed wires and cracked plating.

“Damnit, I told you not to go! I- I told you, I-” his voice was as shattered as the 18 pieces the droid was left in. Vision blurred as wet wet wet tears bloomed in his eyes.

“Please- please I can’t do this without you.” Tears dripped onto Mr. E’s leather-covered finger, which had wires exposed where it should connect to the hand.

“Al oadd tw sdjayzl. Al sdosqk ak.”

As the red and white eye lights flickered into darkness, the only thing left in the sullen, grimy alleyway was the whisper of the wind, and near silent sobbing.

Missed a day but here’s “Heartbreak” for today’s @ninjago-angst-week ! Not much going on here but man do I love the FSM family and their never-ending angsty lives.

Wu stifles the urge to open his eyes and glare at his brother. Instead, he takes a deep breath, letting it out through his nose like father taught him. He’s supposed to be meditating right now, not murdering his brother.

Garmadon pokes his side again, and Wu jumps.

“Stop it,” he hisses, glaring at Garmadon. “We’re supposed to be focusing.”

Today just happened to be another day with her putting herself in a silly situation and demanding the green ninja save her.Watching him jump to her rescue the bashful praise from her after it was slowly driving you to insanity.What kills you the most is when you point it out he just brushes you off.

Wandering down the hall you continue to think about the situation.Lloyd tends to be dense to the point it gets him in stupid or dangerous situations.For example trusting a serpentine….that didn’t end well.You would think he’d learn but at this point you think he just likes the attention.

You pause at your door for a moment ‘Attention’ you thought then suddenly you came up with a wonderful idea.You hurried into your room to plan out this wonderful idea.

You could see it in lloyds eyes, the annoyance directed towards you.Though you weren’t paying him any mind as y’all were in the check out.You two were supposed to grab some groceries for zane but the trip soon turned into you getting hit on by the cashier at the register.After the transaction(and the guy giving you his number) you and lloyd headed out with him huffing.

Honestly you would feel bad seeing as you been doing this for the past two weeks but at the same time him being annoyed is so funny especially when he pouts like a toddler.Sighing to yourself as you to wander back to the monastery you wonder if you should just stop seeing as he's still hasn’t confronted you.After a long travel of him staring daggers in you head and you acting oblivious you wander into your room to nap knowing you'll have to pull an allnighter to catch up on a couple documents.Stripping yourself of clothing to lay in your cool bed.As soon as your body made contact you felt your eyes heavily close.

i try not to get too emotional about ninjago but does anyone else actually tear up watching that one clip of the ninja dancing and singing together in laughy’s?

like they try so hard to be happy despite everything they’ve been through, and it’s about to be ripped away from them again.

and it’s only made worse by the fact that lloyd feels like he can’t relax and join them because he knows they aren’t safe. he’s terrified that it’s not over and guess what! he’s right!

and hes not even being over cautious. he’s not being dramatic. he knows they never catch a break so he doesn’t see the point it fighting to be happy when he knows he will be pushed back under the water the next week.

to me that’s the tragedy of lloyd’s character in the oni trilogy: he goes from someone who always sees the good in people and finds the light in every situation to completely giving up hope. and the worst part about this is that it’s not a skewed belief that he heals from. no, he finally starts viewing everything pessimistically and it turns out he’s right. that his pessimism is reality.

how messed up is it that he loses hope in things ever turning out okay and he’s right. that there really is no hope for them to be a happy family. too much has happened and will continue to happen and he can’t undo or prevent any of it.

i hate this show i love the angst but sometimes it gets to me i just want them to be happy for once

He would definitely jokingly say you beat him to asking, but nonetheless, he agreed. For the rest of the week, he wouldn't leave you alone, but if asked about him, he will deny immediately.

Please, he'd grin widely and say yes. He loved you and was happy to know you felt the same. His heart would be picking up on speed. He'd lie, saying that he wasn't that affected by it.

Bless his soul, he genuinely needs a minute to process the question of the moment. The tiniest smile would reach his face eventually as he agreed, hugging you with a peck on your cheek and getting butterflies in his system. He had to get rid of them later than evening.

Ninjago Fanfiction Recs

Okay, here's some more of my favorite fics! (If you want the list from my first post, you can go here!

"The Fire Inside" by reckless_red316 on Ao3- taking place in Season 3, it explores the aftermath of the car chase episode. Only instead of getting captured by Pythor, Kai loses an arm, and has to relearn what it means to be a ninja. Super emotional and sweet, and Kai has such an incredible arc!

"Weak Verbal Skills" by Dr. Fluffmuffin on Fanfiction.net- This is a really fun and enjoyable one shot. No real angst, just the ninja acting like siblings with Kai as their overprotective (bossy) brother. It is perfect for a quick pick-me-up if you need something happy.

"A Reality of Illusions" by Dancing_Shadow on Ao3- Woo hoo, this fic sent chills down my spine and had my whole body racing with adrenaline as I read it! I loved the combination of the movie with the show, and the darker spin going on just out of sight.

"Shark Bait" by @northpen on Ao3- Honestly, I will read anything this author writes about Ninjago. This one isn't finished, but the chapters that are out are one hundred perfect worth reading. I binged it and lost my mind at the complexity and emotion visible in just the first four chapters.

"Journey of a Lifetime" by Verbum_artis on Ao3- EPIC: The Musical x Ninjago fanfic? Heck yes! Going song by song, this author tells the story of Jay desperately trying to get back to Nya. The world building and lore is absolutely fantastic, as well as the incorporation of song lyrics into the prose.

"Hold On (Let Go)" by jubieew on Ao3- If you want a nice dose of Lloyd angst, this is the perfect one shot! It retells that dramatic scene in Grave Danger from season 5, where Kai faces his fear of water to save Lloyd. Only this time, Kai lets go.

"A Legacy Once Golden" by TheStoryteller_TheDreamer on Ao3- This is actually my fic! It retells season 2 from Lloyd and Garmadon's alternating perspectives, and adds an angstier spin to the story.

"One Wish Is All it Takes" by TheStoryteller_TheDreamer on Ao3- Also by me! Immediately after Dragons Rising Season 3 Part 1, Nya is trying to get Jay to fall in love with her again. But a villain from their past, one who has been wiped from both Nya and Jay's memories during their amnesia spells, is out to get them. It isn't finished, but I'm hoping to post chapter 2 next week!

Jay Walker as the Green Ninja

When Jay said that he wanted to be the Green Ninja, he didn’t really mean it. He wondered if Kai, Cole, or Zane really meant it either. For him, it was just something that should be teased about, debating who of the four of them would become the destined Green Ninja, who would be the best. 

In all honesty, Jay didn’t want to be the Green Ninja. He didn’t want that responsibility. And he knew, deep down, that it could never be him, nor did he ever want it to be. Never in his life could he be someone so great. Not Jay Walker. 

No, Jay Walker wasn’t destined for a future such as that. 

It was when Sensei Wu’s scroll rolled out of the bag that Kai had accidentally grabbed that Jay had first learned about the destined Green Ninja. Jay knew that this Green Ninja was important, that he, or she, would be destined to save all of Ninjago, and wondered who it would be. Kai immediately thought it would be him, Cole arguing his own case and even Zane piped in, so Jay had to argue for himself too.  But, he knew the truth. He was lucky enough to be the Blue Ninja, Master of Lighting, he didn’t need to be anything more. He didn’t expect himself to be.

And that’s when they met Lloyd. Lloyd, who was young but passionate, who was the son of a dark lord, who was kind under the evil attitude he pretended to have. Sensei Wu cared about him, and he was soon becoming one of them, an ally. A young ally, granted, but an ally, a friend, nonetheless. 

Jay and Lloyd bonded over a shared interest in Fritz Donegan, and Jay felt that he finally had a little brother. Lloyd was becoming close to all of them, despite playing pranks and joining Sensei Wu with his lessons. Nothing seemed off about him until a few weeks ago, when lights would turn off whenever he entered a room.

The first time it happened, everyone blamed Jay. Because who else could explode all of the light bulbs in the room simultaneously? Sensei Wu only told Jay to try to control his powers better, and Kai couldn’t stop teasing him for a week, as if he himself hadn’t burnt down the Monastery not long ago. 

Jay didn’t think it was him. But, who else could it be?

It soon began happening when Jay wasn’t in the room, or even close by. And it didn’t take long for everyone to see that Lloyd was the common factor. Jay wouldn’t even be close when the lights shattered, but Lloyd was. He always was. And, when asked to summon lightning at will, the kid could, fearful yet excited at the same time, yellow lightning sparking between his fingertips. 

Sensei had told them that no two people could have the same element, so Lloyd must’ve been the Green Ninja. It only made sense, right?

Yet, Jay felt something sick twist in his gut when he found out. Lloyd could use lightning. Jay could use lightning. Sensei said that it wasn’t possible, and yet here they were. Two elemental Masters of Lightning, or one Green Ninja, one Blue Ninja. 

In the back of his mind, he found himself wondering if…No. He couldn’t think like that. He wouldn’t. 

It just wasn’t possible.

The Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu didn’t rise when they were placed in front of Lloyd. They didn’t glow, they didn’t circle him, they didn’t signify that Lloyd was the Green Ninja, and Jay knew that his suspicions were correct. But he couldn’t voice them. The words wouldn’t escape his mouth. 

For probably the first time in his life, he was speechless. 

“I…I don’t understand. You have to be the Green Ninja.” Sensei Wu stuttered out, and Lloyd stepped back, turning to his uncle in confusion. 

“Was something supposed to happen? Weren’t they supposed to show that I was the Green Ninja? Why didn’t they?”

“It is said that the Green Ninja would defeat one of the greatest enemies Ninjago faced.” Zane said, stepping forward and grabbing his shurikens of ice. “It also said that this Ninja would surpass the others, demonstrating an understanding of all of our elements. You used Lightning. Your father is one of our enemies. It’s only logical that you would be the one to be the Green Ninja.”

“He has to be!” Kai argued, frowning at the weapons, as if they would crumble under his gaze. “I know he’s the Green Ninja, I know it!”

Cole and Nya were quiet, oddly so, and Jay didn’t feel like asking them what they thought. He could barely form a thought himself. 

Could he really be the Green Ninja? Wasn’t…wasn’t that the only other option?

No. No, he didn’t want that. He didn’t want to be the hero that the Green Ninja was, he couldn’t be. He was just a kid from a junkyard. He was just an inventor. Nothing more. Nothing special.  

Nothing, nothing, nothing一

It was Nya who spoke up next. She knew him, better than anyone else, and Jay couldn’t help but wonder if she read his mind.

“What if Jay is the Green Ninja?” 

Her question was met with silence, before Kai burst out laughing. Jay would’ve been offended if he wasn’t so scared. 

“Nya! Are you insane? Jay can barely be the Blue Ninja, let alone the best ninja there is!”

Jay couldn’t say that he was surprised to hear those words. They were a lot like the words his own mind was shouting. 

“No, I’m not insane!” Nya yelled back, her hands forming fists. “I guess that you don’t know Jay like I do. I know he’s kind, loyal, and humble. He could be a great leader! And how else do you explain both Lloyd and Jay being able to use Lightning?”

“Nya.” Sensei said, with a slight bit of hesitation, “I know that Jay is the Blue Ninja.”

“How? How did you know that?”

Jay looked to Sensei at the question, well aware of the states that he was getting. He couldn’t help but want an answer to that, too. Sensei let out a heavy sigh, before turning to Jay. 

“Your…ancestor… was the Master of Lightning.”

“That might be important, but Lloyd is clearly not the Green Ninja.” Nya argued, “Who else would be? Who else’s element has been used by two people?” 

The room lapsed into silence, Nya’s argument holding sound. It made sense. Lloyd wasn’t the Green Ninja, but he could use lightning. Jay could use lightning, too. 

He wanted to run away. He wanted to go back home to his parents, back to the junkyard, and ignore everything that was happening. But he couldn’t. His feet were glued to the floor, stuck, as if he had already accepted his fate, the fate that he didn’t want. 

Lloyd picked up the Nunchucks of Lighting, breaking the silence. “Well, can’t we just put the weapons in front of him? Wouldn’t they tell us?”

“They would.” Zane added, and Jay didn’t move. Kai seemed hesitant, yet he picked up his sword, Cole following close by with his scythe. 

“It’ll be okay, Jay. We’ll figure this out.” Cole said softly, kindly. Jay couldn’t find the courage to reply, but was thankful, so, so thankful for his friend’s words.

As soon as the Golden Weapons were placed in front of him, they began glowing, and everyone watched him in shock. They lifted, slowly spinning around Jay, surrounding him in a golden mist. 

Jay felt something stir inside of him, something shifting in his chest, like a second heart, beating faster and faster, stronger than he ever knew possible. He wrapped his arms around himself, as if shielding himself from what was to come, what was right in front of him. 

He couldn’t be the Green Ninja. He couldn’t be. 

But…he was. He was the Green Ninja. 

And now, he couldn’t deny the truth. As he watched the Golden Weapons hover in front of him, the blue clothes he wore didn’t feel right anymore. 

Nothing did.

Jay sat on his bunk bed, alone in the room, running his hands along the green gi he now wore. His blue ones were being refitted to fit Lloyd, who they now knew was the Blue Ninja. 

A part of him was hurt. The lightning that he thought was his, the lightning that listened to his calling, wasn’t actually his own to hold. He could control it, sure, but he was no longer the Master of Lightning. He was no longer who he thought he was.

This felt like a mistake. How was Jay going to be the Green Ninja? How was he successfully supposed to lead his team to victory? Kai would never listen to him, Zane was so much smarter than Jay, and Cole always made up his own mind. Why would he force himself to obey Jay, when he wouldn’t need Jay’s help?

Nya told him that he was going to be a good leader. Yet, for the first time, Jay believed that she was wrong. 

There was a knock on the door, and he looked up, taking a deep breath. 

“Come in.”

The door to the shared room creaked open, and Sensei Wu walked in, holding a dirty, old scroll. Jay sat up straighter, wondering if the training on how to be the Green Ninja was starting so soon.

“Look, Sensei…I know that I need to be the Green Ninja right away, that I need to train, but I really just need a minute. I only learned that I was the Green Ninja, and I can barely stomach leading this team, let alone fighting the most evil people in all of Ninjago! So…training might have to wait. Please. At least until I can wrap my head around this. I’m not ready. Honestly, I won’t ever be ready!.”

The words escaped in a rush, and he slapped his hand to his mouth, hoping that he would stop talking before he said something he might regret. 

Sensei Wu nodded, giving him a sad look. Silently, he sat in front of Jay, pulling out his teapot and cup. 

“Sensei?”

“I’m not here to train you, not yet. I understand how rough this is. I just…” Sensei sighed, as if he was sad for Jay, or sad that the fate of Ninjago was resting on someone who wasn’t capable of saving it. 

“Sensei, you can just say it. I’m not supposed to be the Green Ninja. I can’t be who I need to be. I’m going to fail.”

“No, Jay, you are the Green Ninja. The weapons will always point the way, and I trust them. I trust you as well.”

Jay shook his head. “You shouldn’t. I’m…I’m just a junkyard boy. I’m not special.”

“Don’t listen to those words you said, Jay, or to the people that told you that. You are special, and not just because you’re the destined Green Ninja.” Sensei said softly. “Because you’re Jay Walker. You’ve always been special.”

Jay didn’t know if he could believe it himself, at least not yet, yet the words made him tear up. Something inside of him shifted, and he had to hold back a sob.

Eventually, he was able to ask what he had been wanting to ask for a while.  “What’s the scroll for?”

Sensei nodded, rolling it out as Jay spoke, and Jay curled in on himself, scared of what it was. 

“I found this scroll far back in my father’s records. I couldn’t figure out how you were the Green Ninja, I was sure that your ancestors were the Masters of Lightning. When I eventually found this scroll, everything made sense.”

Jay could see small photos mixed with old writing on the scroll as it rolled out. There was a man dressed in black, with a large helmet on his head, much like Garmadon’s during their first encounter with him. Beside him, there was a woman with blonde hair, handing him a blue ball with both hands, lightning branching off of it. Sensei pointed to the image, a thoughtful look on his face. 

“According to this, The previous elemental Master of Lightning gave her element to Garmadon, in exchange for a connection to the Creatures of the Darkness.”

“What are the Creatures of the Darkness?”

“Dragons, sea serpents, eagles, many creatures who only exist at the Island of Darkness. They are powerful, some possessing rare abilities that only the greatest heroes can face. She can now control them, and will no doubt use them to try and take over Ninjago with Garmadon.”

Jay resisted his urge to run away. Creatures of Darkness? Garmadon? This dangerous woman who he had to be related to? What were they getting themselves into? What would Jay and his team have to face?

“So, the lightning element?”

“Garmadon must have given it to Lloyd when he was born, I…I still don’t know why.”

Jay took a moment to process that information, wondering why his ancestor would give up her element, why Garmadon would give it to Lloyd, and��who would he have to fight? The Green Ninja was destined to fight one of the greatest evils, which one was it?

“So, I might have to face my ancestor who controls powerful dragons and stuff?”

Sensei nodded. “As well as Garmadon.”

“Both?” He couldn’t help the panic that seized his chest, and frowned deeply. 

“Well, you will have your team beside you.”

“Great. This will be so easy, right? Everything will go completely fine, none of us will die, and we’ll all win!” Jay said sarcastically, getting to his feet, pacing around the room frantically, “Right? It’ll be perfect! It’s not like we have to fight evil monsters and not one, but two of the most powerful villains Ninjago has ever seen!”

“Jayー”

“We can totally do this! We’re still kids, we barely know how to use Spinjitzu, and the incredible Green Ninja doesn’t know what he’s doing! Ninjago will totally be safe in our hands!”

“Jay!” 

Sensei Wu stood up and gripped his shoulders, his wise eyes boring into Jay’s frantic ones. Jay hadn’t even realized that he was breathing heavily, tears burning in his eyes. 

“I can’t do this. I can’t.” His body shook with sobs, and he covered his face with his hands, too ashamed to face his master. “I…I can’t be the Green Ninja.”

“No, you can’t.” Sensei Wu said. “Not alone. But, you have a team, a team that will guide you, that will train you, and that will fight beside you. You’re not alone, Jay. You can, and will, be the Green Ninja. I know this for certain.”

Jay nodded weakly, too scared to argue, and Sensei wrapped him in a hesitant hug. 

“You can do this, Jay. You’re not alone, and you never will be.”

And as Jay sank into Sensei Wu’s embrace, he wondered if he would ever be able to believe the words that his master spoke.

Months later, Jay stood on the back of his Golden Dragon, golden power flicking around him. He felt power surging through his veins, his own power, and the power and strength that he could feel shining from his friends below him. They were fighting Garmadon and his goons, leaving Jay to fight the dark dragon in the sky. 

The woman sitting on the dragon across from him had blond hair, a wicked smile on her face, eyes that seemed much like his own. She was determined, strong, and with a raised hand, she called upon another Creature of Darkness, a serpent snaking in the clouds, threatening to consume Ninjago in darkness.

“Do you really think that you can beat me? You? A Junkyard boy?” She asked, her angelic voice like a snake’s, and Jay stood taller. He focused on the sound of his friends fighting below him, the courage that they all showed. He remembered all of the moments he spent beside them, the friendship that they had shown him, the love of a family that Jay found his strength in. He could fight with them by his side. He could do this. 

And he would. For them. For all of them. 

“I can. You may have your army, and your monsters, but I have my friends.” Jay replied, forming a ball of golden energy between his fingertips, “And trust me, they’re all that I ever needed.”

With those words said, the battle began, and for the first time, Jay finally felt like he was who he was meant to be.

The Green Ninja. No, the Golden Ninja. 

Things finally felt right.

Just a Little Something about how long Zane was dead for in Ninjago between Season 3 and 4

In Ninjago Decoded Zane said that he downloaded all 74 episodes plus the holiday special of Jay's game show, 'The Ultimate Ninja Challenge' (a.k.a 75 episodes)

Taking in the schedules for American Ninja Warrior and Wipeout, which appear to be the inspiration for Jay's game show.

American Ninja Warrior is a half hour long show that airs four episodes in a day and another four the following week as a full season (at least when it first came out, IDK about now).

Wipeout is an hour long show (with commercials) that airs a new episode, once a week.

Understanding these two details:

At Most - eight episodes per season, at one season per year with 75 episodes total equals a little more then 9 years (to be precise, 9 complete seasons with 3 episodes of the tenth being aired)

At Least - one episode per week with 75 episodes total equals almost 18 months a.k.a. a year and a half (to be precise, 1 year, 5 months and 3 weeks)

In Compromise for the two shows with a leaning towards the Wipeout influence: Let's say, two episodes per week with 75 episodes total equals 9 months and 2 weeks (this is on the idea of Jay leaving before the filming of the 76th episode).

So obviously we don't get a ten year time skip between Seasons 3 and 4 and I clearly haven't factored in how long it took to set up Jay's game show in the first place, however, I don't think it's that far outside the realm of possibility that the time skip was at least somewhere between 9 and a half months and 18 months. This certainly gives enough time for moss to grow on Zane's statue and for angst among the Ninja Team (<- Including Nya, Pixal and Skylor).

Enough time for Jay to get his own game show.

Enough time for Nya to gather what she needs to fix the Bounty.

Enough time for Cole to get a job without people knowing who he is.

Enough time for Lloyd to be with his father before Garmadon's Season 4 self-sacrifice.

Enough time for Zane to rebuild himself only to be kidnapped by Ronin and sold to Master Chen.

Enough time for Pixal to be kidnapped as well and held in Chen's dungeon where the Mechanic pried her open and took her apart piece by piece.

Enough time where Skylor's training was put into overdrive as she had to watch her father put every last detail into place for the Elemental Masters, like a spider preparing its web for the flys.

Enough time for Kai to get his own apartment where he exists alone with thoughts that are far to loud and condemning for a protector who lost his brother, to craft a place for himself in an underground fighting ring that won't ask questions, where he can fight and forget, only to be constantly plagued by his every waking moment asking, 'why wasn't it me', and thinking, 'it should have been me'.
