gruul is my preferred deckbuilding flavor of the moment, but this, surprisingly, is my favorite of the RG decks I've built so far. I figured it might be a fun thought exercise to see how one could protect oneself exclusively with creatures, but did not expect to have this much fun playing with it. people often complain about many commanders being "linear"—i.e., realistically having only one competitive build. if you are finding that a lot of your commander choices are turning out that way, I'd recommend giving nikya of the old ways a spin. with the only criterion for inclusion being "is it a green and/or red creature", you have a lot of possible directions you can go with it. it seems slow—that is, until the exact moment it isn't.
right now, my nikya deck is literally 96 percent creatures and lands. the only noncreature cards in it are jeweled lotus, rhythm of the wild, lurking predators, and primal surge, and I might even take that last one out because even though it was practically made for this deck, I have literally never had to resort to it. I call it "nikya (type A)" because I am also considering a different build that is a little more into punishment, destruction, and maybe some pillow forting. If I ever do that one, it will, naturally, be type B.
type A could probably stand to have a few more dorks and rocks to pick up the slack when nikya gets countered or successfully targeted. it's got selvala and shaman of forgotten ways (which is also a fun wincon), but I also just added the new gwenna, eyes of gaea from brothers' war, and it could probably also use some of the 1-drop classics, as well as zhur-taa druid.
there are lots of reasons you should run this deck, but in the end I think the most compelling one is that that mohawk is punk as fuck. I mean, come on.

The Legend of Mata Nui / Amaja Mata Nui - Matoran Language Translation
Hello and happy Bionicle Day! It's been too long since I posted a Matoric translation of some kind, so let's change that. Below you'll find an up-to-date translation of the "Legend of Mata Nui", as represented in the Mask of Light film.
A more specific reason for posting this today is the fact that musician and Bionicle fan Markle (@MarkleSnoppy on Twitter, @marklesmusic on YouTube) has produced a beautiful choral arrangement of part of this translation, set to an original musical score. You can catch the song during the Bionicle Day 2024 broadcast (Day 1), and it will also be available on Markle's YouTube channel (edit: check it out here!).
Click here for a document version of the translation, which also includes a full gloss and partial pronunciation guide.
Matoric Version:
Ro'o kai, te amaja boa-nikya o ideya anga.
Ivaha vahai, te Mata Nui ivo ya ohanu ya-oza Matoran ima nu.
Ro okhu maikhu no nu, te Mata Nui oza taka ya nu haita kai te Kaita Maita Vaita no.
Ro agua lega ya nu ta. Apu te ro ai-ru'o Mata Nui aro ya nu.
Heara'o mata ya ko nu ru. Haua ta ro ai Mata Nui te Makuta te upura yai. Makuta iza khu ya te olua ta Mata Nui ka usura a yai nu ta.
Makuta ta krah ai lutu yai vo te ai ulutu-za ya nu…
English Version:
Gathered friends, listen again to our Legend of the BIONICLE.
In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens, carrying we, the ones called the Matoran, to this paradise.
We were separate and without purpose, so the Great Spirit illuminated us with the three virtues: Unity, Duty, and Destiny.
We embraced these gifts, and in gratitude, we named our island home Mata Nui, after the Great Spirit himself.
But our happiness was not to last, for Mata Nui's brother, the Makuta, was jealous of these honors and betrayed him, casting a spell over Mata Nui, who fell into a deep slumber.
The Makuta was free to unleash his shadows . . . and unleash them, he did . . .

The Matoran Language (Matoric) is a constructed language (“conlang”) set within the universe and lore of BIONICLE (a LEGO property). It is the language of the biomechanical species called Matoran, and it is also used as a lingua franca amongst many of the biomechanical inhabitants of the artificially-constructed Matoran Universe.
If you would like to learn more about Matoric, further documentation can be found in these posts: The Matoran Language [2021] and An Etymological Dictionary of Matoric, Third Edition.
The Matoran Language Resources page of this blog also contains a wealth of additional content and archival material.

Magic the Gathering tip: a nikya of the ancient ways deck can produce a category five 'combo for gruul' event in which you draw and play 80 cards in one turn with a creatures and lands only deck.
Magic the Gathering tip: you can also do this with a simic deck because simic decks can do whatever they want

New “budget” Commander cards: March of the Machine Aftermath Edition: Monocolor and colorless
Alright, this set is small, shouldn't take too long to get through it, so let's start by bulking together all the colors. All the cards presented here are under $2 at time of writing. Cards will be evaluated as part of the 99, even legendary creatures.
Tumblr media
Are you playing an aggressive human deck? Then more damage AND some protection on a two-drop that's on tribe is, unsurprisingly, quite good.
Tumblr media
This combat damage trigger carries a whole lot of power when there's absurd artifacts and enchantments available nowadays! However, getting a 2/5 without evasion to stick on the board and connect past turn 4 will present a significant challenge, and I'm not sure there's a ton of overlap between decks that want this effect and decks that can get it through.
Tumblr media
Mass bounce is blue's most common ways to deal with a board, and even if this one misses the most threatening part of the board, it's very cheap and can be cast at instant speed, making it a very interesting new options that quite a few decks should probably give a look.
Tumblr media
Getting in four times will, in most games, be a pipe dream. However, if you are playing a +1/+1 counter deck that can enable this without having to attack four times and have access to black, I'd consider this as a pretty decent option.
Tumblr media
Arni is a trap in most cases. Requiring you to have cards that cost less than your creatures only on board AND extra mana laying around is a lot more tricky than it seems, usually you'll have curved out. With that said he triggers himself and can take effect the turn he comes down, so if your deck is creature heavy, can generate some excess mana and draw a lot of cards to fuel him, he can genuinely do some powerful things. The immediate home would be in Nikya decks, and most of his other homes are probably also in gruul(+) colors, he's quite mana and creature-hungry.
Tumblr media
Dragon tribal support that isn't itself a dragon is a quite competitive slot in Dragon decks. Getting immediate value and drawing a dragon every turn does put this guy in the competition though.
Tumblr media
The deans keep on their tradition of being walls of text that's unnecessarily confusing and requiring three rereads. Waiting a turn around the table to get any benefit is sketchy, but casting two free spells a turn might be worth the wait in some decks.
Tumblr media
This is like, the fifth best mono-red tutor! A bad Gamble is still a Gamble, and if you're budget conscious and have enough choice artifact targets, this isn't the worst card you could include in your deck.
Tumblr media
Having to pay three mana on top of the creature's cost for a couple counters is expensive, but if you have flex utility land slots and can make use of the counters or extra power for other synergies in the deck, you can consider this new addition.

“Move in!”
“What about her magic?”
“What magic?”
The Azorius laughed amongst themselves before forming a circle around an enraged Nikya. The lone Gruul shaman reared back and stomped down with her front hooves, briefly driving the arresters back with a shockwave. She was still surrounded, however, and desperately brandished her war club as the enemy recovered.
“Easy, easy!” One of the Azorius stepped forward, lowering his sword and raising an empty hand. “Hey, Nikya, we don’t have to come to blows every time we do this, you know…even though it is usually you attacking us! You can see we have you surrounded. We can just- SNAKE!”
Nikya shifted her club to one hand, and with her free hand flicked her wrist. A tamed viper uncoiled from her wrist and flew through the air, landing directly atop the speaking arrester’s helmet. As the man panicked, and his teammates rushed over to help, the Azorius standing behind Nikya surged forward, hoping to catch her by surprise in the chaos.
“Dumb move.”
With a smug smirk, Nikya bucked behind her at full power. She caught the approaching Azorius by complete surprise, sending them flying and removing them from the fight. While this happened, the soldiers struggling with the snake turned and ran, as the viper landed on the ground and slithered after them. The remaining Azorius now swapped nervous glances rather than laughter, their numbers severely reduced.
“What’s wrong?” Nikya grinned. “Don’t you still want to bring me in?”
The stragglers grimaced, then finally fled, leaving Nikya alone once more. The centaur gave a satisfied nod, and beckoned for the snake to return to her. Finished chasing off the last of the soldiers, the snake obliged, and sprung up to coil around her arm once more.
“I know I’m not really summoning you,” Nikya muttered to the snake, “but if that’s not a kind of magic, I don’t know what is!”
Tumblr media
[I’m pretty sure bloodrush can get around Nikya’s casting restriction!
Also, headcanon: I like to think Nikya’s “can’t cast noncreature spells” thing translates in-universe to “can’t do magic.” So, maybe instead of “actual” spells, she focuses on, like, prestidigitation instead!]

OH MY GOD I JUST LEARNED THAT INGA AND ESIKA /AND/ DESPARKED TYVAR COUNTS THE MANA NIKYA AND KINNAN MAKE AS MANA FROM CREATURES. I DON’T KNOW— HOW DID I NOT—
I know this deck isn’t good, but man I have never felt more in love with a 60-card deck than I do right now. This is my child. A goofy kid, a punk centaur, two women in a cat chariot, and all of their friends.

What sort of magic decks do you play?
I have a few (all EDH/Commander) but my main deck is this one, my Omnath, Locus of Rage deck that I've been tweaking basically since Battle for Zendikar came out
Tumblr media
Apart from that I have Nikya of the Old Ways (Oops All Creatures), Wulfgar of Icewind Dale (Double Attack Triggers), Derevi, Empyrial Tactictian (Birds), and a couple of upgraded preconstructed decks.
