In which Charles is a terrible wingman and Edwin fucks. I love fic where Edwin explores his sexuality and gets to be confident and sexy and Charles gets hit with the old Feelings Realization and this one pulls it off so well!

Charles has a lot of feelings about Edwin and decides to say it with flowers. I absolutely love the language of flowers and, honestly, decoding messages through flower arrangements seems right up Edwin's alley. Plus he deserves nice things! This fic is super sweet, the floracle is amazing and I really like how Charles' knowledge/ intelligence and general thoughtfulness get to shine here.

Beowulf AU! Charles is hired to kill a horrible monster. I loved this historical/fantasy setting and the little snippets of mythology. The blend of Charles-typical speech patterns, modern slang and Old English was especially fun. The Author's Note also has some really interesting background info and has finally persuaded me to actually read Beowulf.

One of Charles' killers comes to the agency for help after he himself is murdered. Apart from the deliciously dramatic irony of that premise, I enjoyed Charles (somewhat) processing his trauma and the client trying to (finally) do right by Charles. It's also set in the Codependency World Cup Extended Universe so Charles fraught relationship with his ex-bestie/crush Mark also gets spotlighted. Recommended!

Very cute fic about Edwin coming to understand his physical feelings for Charles. I loved the luna moths/butterflies imagery and Edwin being very Edwin about being in love. Just lovely characterisation all round.

It's part of a series also featuring Kiss Me & Repaint Me featuring Charles going all out on "fripperies" to make sure Edwin get the first time he deserves. Lovely.

Edwin Payne is a dweeb who gives terrible weak comebacks, who can be unnecessarily petty, or overly smug, who is inordinately pleased with himself when wearing detective gear and using scientific gear, the thought never crossing his mind that he might not look as cool as he thinks he does, who carries a continual and utter absolute delight at acting like the characters he loved to read about, who was enthralled by his magazine detective and adventure stories and who wears a similar smile when he sits on the bed watching Scooby Doo with Niko, 'these detectives are terribly clever,' whose board game collection is mostly variations of Clue, who requires payment (because any good detective is worth some kind of payment) but whose idea of payment is whatever interesting object the client offers to add to his collection, who has encyclopedic intelligence he clearly dedicated hours to learning, who has a particular way of acting and speaking like everything is of vital importance, because to him, it is.

What if when Niko learns about Edwin and the Cat King she tries to "help" by giving Edwin some research material?

"Know your enemy!" She exclaims as she hands him the most explicit yaoi with one of the characters being a Neko.

..... And Edwin is both horrified and intrigued and absolutely can not stop reading it so he takes it with him everywhere and tries to sneak and read it.

The cat King catches him of course and is absolutely ✨️delighted✨️ while a flustered Edwin is trying to come up with a good excuse of why he had it.

Putting it under a cut for the benefit of my people who haven't watched "Dead Boy Detectives" yet and might still do so, but thoughts about what Yockey said about Niko:

I know we're all loving Yockey's reveal that Niko and the Principal are the same person, but it just hit me: how much do you think Niko absolutely delighted in assigning the Night Nurse to be Edwin and Charles' supervisor? I am sure some of it was Niko doing what she always does in looking to bring out the best in others, to be supportive of the boys in making sure her decision wouldn't be questioned, etc. But part of me thinks that there had to have been some very smug glee at putting the Night Nurse exactly where she didn't want to be.

(And maybe put her in the most likely plane of existence to run into Kashi again.)

Ok so here’s why I think Niko might be dead but not gone in Season 2:

We saw her die but didn’t see Death come to collect her.

The magic 8 ball seems to confirm that she did die.

We know her dad died, but don’t really have any information about him or the circumstances surrounding his death.

We know that Niko has fantastic reading comprehension. After reading the Night Nurse’s book, she now has at least some understanding of the bureaucracy of death/the afterlife and some more knowledge of supernatural entities.

We saw her, or someone that is heavily implied to be Niko, in the igloo shivering from the cold, which could suggest she’s still alive. But there are clearly other planes in which the dead can feel things and interact differently with their surroundings than would be expected on Earth (Charles & Edwin seeing their reflections in hell, Edwin bleeding in hell, the people in lust and gluttony, etc). However, this scene does leave her situation really ambiguous so I’d love to hear everyone else’s interpretation!

During that chat on the roof with Edwin, he said that no one is every really gone- I’m probably just clutching at straws here lol but foreshadowing maybe?!?!?? please?!?

Niko’s character arc also seemed kinda unresolved compared to everyone else's. She went from moving to another country to get away from her grief, avoiding talking to her mum or reading her mum’s letters, to saying that she’ll talk to her mum, sent her mum a single letter, then died. She’s started to process her grief, but I feel like not much time was spent on it. Having said that, there’s only 8 episodes and she isn’t the main character of Dead Boy Detectives, so that might just be a matter of prioritising the main storylines.

I also feel like DBD isn’t really a show that goes in for shock value too much, and I don’t feel like they’d kill off a character just to raise the stakes. There’s plenty of ways of writing episode 8 without Niko dying. They managed to avoid killing off Angie after all, so why would Niko die unless there’s a reason for her to?

I really think that she’ll have some unfinished business of her own in season 2, likely to do with her dad, but I don’t think that means that she won’t be able to make it back to the boys and Crystal.

Run For Mayor - Niko Omilana

On a lazy day in London, you meet Niko Omilana, an aspiring mayoral candidate, during his unusual type of campaign involving a bus, where you’re pulled into the fun and chaos of his campaign.

It's a very boring day on your day off. You decided to go out for a walk and have some fun on the way. It's nearly election. So, why not see some campaign going on?

Feeling the cold yet familiar breeze of the wind making contact with your skin the moment you got out of your apartment. Walking in the busy street of London while the sun shines very brightly.

You looked around to the surrounding near you, just walking with no care about what's happening in front of you at all.

A red bus stopped in your direction and there's a man on it telling everyone to come aboard. He looks a bit ridiculous but also interesting?

You knew this is not a regular bus, it really had the campaigning nature to it. Knowing the campaigning for the election is currently going on.

Watching the news to see the real competitors have a debate on national news while seeing some of the people running for the position of being the Mayor of London cause ruckus on the internet.

The tall man walked towards you, wearing a suit and with another person wearing a glasses following him with a camera. You recognized him, not too well but you did.

You watched him come out of the bus and walked in your direction. While you stood there looking absolutely clueless, wondering if walking outside is a great idea.

"Hi, what's your name?" The man in a suit asked you. You hesitated to answer him, feeling a bit uneasy of having a camera pointed at you when you glanced to the other.

"Y/N" You said shyly. You didn't knew why you were nervous, maybe it's his presence that triggers something in you?

"Listen Y/N, delicious food, the best food in London for 5 pounds if you just go inside the bus" He said, gesturing to the bus not too far from your current position.

"Yeah alright, why not?" You said with a smile as you saw him cheer, following him inside the bus. Being thankful that you brought money with you.

You came along and had a seat on the front row. You saw some of the workers already making food.

You watched him persuade people to come along in the bus using a megaphone. Irritating it is, but he's campaigning and you really can't do nothing about it anyways, as he also handed each person a menu.

NDL huh? That's something.

You joined them with whatever they are doing, yelling the word NDL to the people and just being entertained by it. Maybe it is really a good choice to go outside sometimes. You watched him gather more passengers as the bus moved all around London.

"Who’s ready to get the best £5 meal of your life?" He was practically glowing with energy, and you couldn’t help but chuckle to yourself.

"Five pounds for this?" A woman next to you said skeptically, eyeing the food. But as she took a bite, her face lit up as her previous doubts dissolving into delight.

"Well, I’ll be darned. It’s actually good" The woman added.

You found yourself shaking your head with a grin. This whole thing was ridiculous, yet you were fully sucked into the hype, enjoying the spectacle. Everyone on the bus seemed to be having a good time, with the smell of freshly cooked food mixing with the sounds of laughter and banter.

Suddenly, the man in the suit, whom you had now realized was a charismatic aspiring politician named Niko Omilana, stopped in front of you but this time, there is no other person following him carrying a camera that made you ease comfortably at the moment. He smiled at you, and for a brief second as you felt a little nervous again but the warmth in his eyes put you at ease.

"So Y/N right?" Niko said, leaning slightly forward as if sharing a secret.

"What do you think? The best of London’s street food culture, wrapped up in a nice, compact little campaign" He added as he gestured toward the menu, where the letters stood out in bold print.

"I mean... it’s a creative way to connect with people but you can’t just promise the best food for £5 and expect people to vote for you" You said as you raised an eyebrow, your voice surprised that he was asking you, of all people.

"Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. People just want to know that you care about the simple pleasures in life. Food, fun, connection. This is how you win people over, one meal at a time" Niko said with a genuine smile and a wink.

His eyes locked with yours, and for a moment, you felt a shift in the air. Something about the way he said it, like he wasn’t just talking about food, but about... you? Your heart fluttered unexpectedly. Of course he isn't, you're probably just imagining things and assuming it.

"Would you mind being in the shot with me, Y/N? I promise, it'll be painless plus you’ll look amazing with that food" Niko said as he turned to you, offering a mischievous smile.

You hesitated because being on camera wasn’t really your thing but something about the way he was looking at you made it hard to say no. Plus, the idea of being in a quirky political campaign ad was strangely appealing at the moment.

"Well...okay" You said, your voice betraying you by coming out breathless and shaky.

Niko's smile widened and before you knew it, the camera was zooming in, capturing the two of you holding up your food in front of a backdrop of happy and cheering people. The moment the shot was over he turned to you, noticing his eyes almost twinkling.

"See? You’re a natural. You’ll make a fantastic addition to my campaign. You might just be my secret weapon" Niko said with a smile.

"I think I’ll stick to my regular job, thanks" You said with a laugh, unsure whether he was being serious or just having fun with the whole thing.

"Oh, come on. What’s wrong with shaking things up a bit?" Niko said with a shrug.

"Yeah, because I’m sure voters are really looking for someone who’s good at eating £5 meals" You said with a chuckle, feeling that familiar flutter in your chest.

"You’d be surprised" Niko said as he raised an eyebrow, looking genuinely intrigued and for the first time, you realized he wasn’t just talking about food anymore.

The bus ride continued, filled with more banter and fun as people enjoyed the food and took part in Niko’s impromptu campaigning. As the bus turned to another corner, he looked over at you once more.

You felt your cheeks heat up, unsure of how to respond. There was something genuine in his words, something you hadn’t expected from a politician. Maybe it was the way he said it, or maybe it was the way he looked at you like he genuinely wanted to know what you thought. Either way, you couldn’t help but feel a little lighter in that moment.

"Well, Y/N, I’ll see you around and maybe... we can grab a coffee sometime? If you’re interested, of course" Niko said as the bus came to a stop, giving you a playful salute.

"Yeah, coffee sounds good" You said as you smiled, trying to keep your cool.

As you stepped off the bus, you felt a lightness in your step, a sense of excitement you hadn’t expected to experience on this lazy day. The streets of London buzzed around you, but your mind was still on the bus, on the unexpected fun, and on him, Niko Omilana, the charismatic mayoral candidate who somehow had the ability to make a campaign about food feel personal.

You were almost lost in thought when a voice interrupted your daydreaming.

"Y/N wait up!" You turned to see Niko jogging lightly toward you, his suit slightly rumpled but that same warm, genuine smile plastered on his face. 

"Could I get your number? I mean, for the coffee we talked about earlier" He gave you a sheepish grin, looking like he wasn’t used to being shy.

"Oh, um... yeah, sure" You said as you fumbled for a second, realizing that you were actually a little excited to share your number with him.

"I’ll text you soon" He said, and there was something so assured about the way he said it that you couldn’t help but believe him.

Niko stepped into the Beta Squad’s shared mansion, the familiar sound of laughter and loud chatter filling the air. He kicked off his shoes by the door and tossed his keys onto the counter. The place was as chaotic as always Kenny was playing his PS5 in the living room, Chunkz and Sharky were in the kitchen, making more of a mess than an actual meal and AJ was scrolling through his phone.

Niko couldn't help but smile as he made his way into the kitchen, still buzzing from the whirlwind of his afternoon. His mind was still on her, Y/N. He couldn't shake it, there was something about her that was different, something that had his heart doing flips every time he thought about their encounter.

"Ayy, Niko! How'd it go with the campaign broski?" Chunkz said, grinning as he grabbed a handful of crisps. 

"Actually, yeah, it went... great  to be honest" Niko said, a grin slowly spreading across his face.

"Yeah?" Sharky who said it this time.

"I met someone,  her name’s Y/N and I met her on the bus, we kind of... clicked" He said as he shrugged, trying to act casual about it.

"You clicked with someone on a campaign bus?" Aj said bursting out of laughter.

"Shush man, you're breath stinks" Niko said as he laughed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. He wasn’t used to being so open about stuff like this

"Yeah, I think I'm in love" Niko said, flopping down the couch next to Kenny.

Chunkz was the first one to laugh at Niko's statement, only to be followed by the others including George and their other friends.

"This brudda is talking about falling in love just because he met a girl in the bus" Chunkz said, still laughing as he clung into Sharky who's still laughing as well.

Niko rolled his eyes, but his smile was soft, and there was a light in his eyes that none of them had seen before.

"I’m serious, though. I think I’ve got it bad for her" Niko said.

"If you’re really in love, you gotta make it official. I want to see this. If you don't text her tonight, you’re getting roasted for the next month" Aj said folding his arms, looking at Niko with a grin.

"I think I’m gonna text her now" Niko said, more to himself than to his friends. He hesitated for a second but then his fingers moved, composing a simple message.

Hey, Y/N. I had a great time today. Would love to grab that coffee sometime soon.

"Done" Niko said, setting his phone down as his friends gathered around, all teasing him with their classic banter.

Niko rolled his eyes but couldn’t suppress the smile on his face. For the first time in a while, he felt like he was doing something right. It wasn’t about the campaign, the content, or the food, it was about something real. Something that felt bigger than all that.

He was in love and he couldn’t wait to see where it went.

why does the cat king serve so much cunt. girl who asked. AND THEN HE TRANSFORMS INTO AN EVEN CUNTIER OUTFIT. WHAT ARE U DOING HERE?? WHO ASKED????

girl why does edwin keep having homosexual flashbacks of the cat king. that's so funny. *gets flirted with by the cat king* hope this doesn't awaken something in me <- edwin rn

idk how i feel about him tbh. like on the one hand it really skeeves me out when someone flirts with a person, registers they're not interested, and keeps pushing anyway, but on the other hand i appreciate the cat king backing off & providing an alternate solution when edwin is clearly uncomfortable with being openly propositioned. he'll still hit on people who Do Not Want to be hit on but he does not coerce sex!! so. yknow. at least there's that?

NIKO MY BELOVED NIKO she's so funny and endearing. i love that she can see the guys now, it seems like she'll be sticking around/part of the gang which i'm very happy for!!! also it seems the pink lights were not in fact lesbianism. sad! oh well the episode was fun and the pixies were done so creatively plus they're funny

crystal putting herself at risk like that.... my girl. i do think what she said to charles about only saying it to trick the sprites wasn't necessarily Untrue in that she was saying it to them For that reason, but i also think it's something she's really feeling. that was too genuine and too quick to have been pulled from nowhere, especially with the context of her earlier conversation with niko. i don't think she really believes that she has nothing and no one, but i think she's afraid she has nothing and no one and that's what she pulled on for that trick.

i noticed something earlier in the episode that made me smile. so edwin was talking about detective work and getting a little smug and bitchy in a fun way, and charles was just watching him with this smile on his face- it made me very happy! they're friends and charles likes when edwin prattles on about something, instead of putting up with him or something stupid. idk i just like their dynamic and how real it feels that they care about each other

also it sure has been established that charles makes impulsive decisions without thinking the consequences through. im sure that's fine and will never come up again 👍

the magic shop was fun! love that this man establishes that he uses to be a walrus and now isn't anymore bc of Backstory and the boys simply cannot gaf. they have shit going on man they don't have time for the kind of backstory lore they probably hear all the time given they run in supernatural circles

esther... what can i say about esther. um she scares me 👍 the scene at the end where it's implied she's dismembering her crow? gross! like well done don't get me wrong the sound design made me deeply uncomfortable, but gross

also she is right that monty has a very cute face. i would not trust that man but he does have the face of a highschool freshman i would give directions to the library or encourage during rehearsal. absolutely diabolical to hinge your evil plan on a face that cute!

what else... i really like the dynamic between the four of them. i think niko is a nice addition to help balance things out so it's not all crystal & edwin sniping at each other while charles tries to mediate- which is fun don't get me wrong and i don't want the bickering to go away, but niko opens up a lot more possibilities and i look forward to seeing how her addition affects the group dynamic. or she stays a minor character they helped out and im wrong about the ending implying she joins the group LOL but we'll see! hope she stays an important character i love her, just maybe with fewer threats to her life please haha

as for a favorite character... it's so hard to pick everyone is delightful especially the main few, but if i Had to narrow it down... charles or niko? UGH but i love crystal and edwin too 😭 girl this is impossible they're all so compelling

i don't think there have been any characters i particularly dislike, actually. the little girl with the jellyfish was a bit off-putting for some reason (something about the way she talked? idk man she just threw me off a little no idea why) and the cat king is on thin fucking ice depending on how he deals with rejection (my aro ass Cannot take people acting like they're entitled to someone's affection. he backed down on the sex thing so he's fine for now but i have my goddamn eyes on him)

OH WAIT CRYSTAL'S DEMON EX. nevermind fuck crystal's demon ex all my homies hate crystal's demon ex. girl imagine getting so upset about being dumped that you Steal Your Ex's Memories. could Not be me that's such a pathetic attempt to stay relevant in her life 😭

ANYWAY im having a good time!! i really enjoy this show haha, im excited to see where it goes from here. charles not having an afterlife assignment bc he never crossed over is really interesting, i'd love to learn more about his & edwin's pasts and how they ended up detective-ing together

otp that's not payneland would be Niko and Crystal! Like pretty much all of us, I thought Crystal had a crush on Niko in the beginning (turns out it was paranormal parasites, who would have thought), and I really like the headcanon that Crystal is bi and Niko is potentially a lesbian or ace

and fave brotp is Edwin and Niko, no question! I also assume almost everyone shares this opinion, I was delighted that the show made these two close, I absolutely adored their friendship

This, rather clearly, isn't a review. However, I am currently hyper-fixating on DBD; i'm talking eat, sleep, and breathe these people(Charles rowland you'll forever be famous). So, without further ado; the animals i've assigned them.

__________________ We already canonical animals assigned to two of the characters (shout out to Monty, you remind me of my girlfriend, Archie) but, what if they all had specific animals assigned to them. THIS ISN'T SLANDER I SWEAR. But, if you take it that way, that's brills.

Charles Rowland; Sugar glider / flying squirrel

-Again; I do not have a genuine reason behind such a claim; but, actually nothing, but nothing. She's genuinely a sweetie & I will nvr stand for Crystal slander: she's simply a teenage girl with some issues dawg. BUT; fennec foxes are the animal of resemblance for her because I say so. (Headcanon: she absolutely had one at home & it'd be the most spoiled thing in the world; Crystal named her wisp.)

-Y'all please see the vision. please. She's gen so chinchilla coded: if you look hard enough(I'm completely pulling this out of my arse.) This whole paragraph is gonna be complete spirals/rants(like always) but, dawg Niko was such a delight, like when I first saw the Netflix ad I was conflicted but she's such a darling. I shed so many tears over her 'death' because like, no. She's alive and very well.

RIP Niko sasaki, you would've loved the hurt/comfort tag on ao3 and making your friends get married in the sims.

the Invasion... Nabbing Nikos

Pyrrha was happy. Her latest training session with Jaune had been a utter delight. Not only was she seeing his progress first hand... but after a few feints and a couple impromptu grapples, she had felt his strong but warm arms wrapped about her.

Not to mention getting to ACCIDENTALLY grope the Arc Arse. That was her story, and she was sticking to it.

So she wasn't really paying attention to the figure she was slowly closing with, until at about twenty feet she clued in. There was several things with the figure before her that Pyrrha noted as strange.

First was the absolute dead on resemblance the woman bore to Professor Goodwitch.

Second, the fact that instead of the stern, domineering look, she had a warm, inviting almost motherly smile.

Third, was the dress. A floral print, blue with gold trim, summer dress. Okay that was the weirdest part. Pyrrha doubted the disciplinarian of Beacon even owned a summer dress.

Pyrrha: Professor Goodwitch? Can I help you?

????: (Titters) Oh heavens, it's fun to mistaked for Glyn again.

Pyrrha: Glyn?

????: Yes, my twin sister, who you know as Professor Goodwitch My name is Jasmine, by the way. It's a pleasure to finally meet you Ms Nikos.

Pyrrha: Likewise?

Jasmine: Now that formalities are dealt with. How would feel about having a little one on one... conversation with me?

Pyrrha: A conversation? I don't...

Jasmine: It's nothing bad... I promise you.

Pyrrha: I still don't follow.

Jasmine: That's my fault. Maybe I should have fully introduced myself... I'm Jasmine... ARC... Jaune's mom.

Pyrrha's eyes grew wide and she took a couple shaky steps backwards.

Jasmine: It's okay, sweetie. I just want to discuss some... family matters with you...

Pyrrha: (Taking another step backwards, totally unwilling to admit her feelings for Jaune... especially to his mother) Family... matters?

Jasmine: Let's go somewhere more... private.

Pyrrha: I... I think I hear...

Jasmine snapped her left hand forward, sending a weighted ribbon at the champion faster than she could react. It bound her ankles together, before with a flick of Jasmine's wrist sent waves through the ribbon to cause it to loop around the stunned girl, fully and completely binding and gagging her.

Jasmine: Let's go dear. We need to have a discussion about children and plan a wedding.

Pyrrha squirmed, and even though in the back of her mind she was rejoicing the chance to be with Jaune... his mom scared her. A moment later Pyrrha found herself draped over Jasmine's shoulder like a sack of flour.
