F1s standing restart procedure changed following crashes and dangerous near-miss | 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Formula 1 has confirmed a change to its procedure for standing restarts following the incidents which occured at the Australian Grand Prix. The race stewards recommended a review of the procedures for formation laps prior to standing restarts following a near-miss which involved several drivers at the Australian Grand Prix. Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, Logan Sargeant and Kevin Magnussen had to brake suddenly when they caught up to the pack ahead of a standing restart early in the race. Zhou and Sergio Perez called the incident “dangerous” during the race. Several drivers also complained the arrangement for standing restarts meant they were unable to warm their tyres sufficiently. Race winner Max Verstappen said his tyres were “really, really cold” at the final restart, where a trio of incidents occured. As a result, several drivers ran too deep at the first corner, leading to a series of incidents. Carlos Sainz Jnr collided with Fernando Alonso, while Logan Sargeant hit Nyck de Vries. Pierre Gasly also went off at the first corner, then made contact with his team mate Esteban Ocon when he rejoined. In response the FIA race director Niels Wittich has confirmed a revision to the standing restart procedure which will come into effect from this weekend, including Sunday’s grand prix and today’s sprint race. In the event of a standing restart being given following a race suspension, the Safety Car will be sent out of the pit lane 30 seconds in advance of the field leaving. The Safety Car’s lights will be extinguished immediately after the start, allowing the field to make their way around the track quickly enough to generate sufficient heat in their tyres. MVRDV slots red-walled courtyard into irregularly shaped French housing

Architecture studio MVRDV has completed the Ilot Queyries housing development in Bordeaux, France, which folds around a large red courtyard.

Located to the east of the River Garonne, Ilot Queyries comprises a mix of social and private housing alongside commercial units and a rooftop restaurant.

It was designed by MVRDV with local architects Flint with a focus on the provision of outdoor spaces, meaning each apartment has a balcony and access to the central courtyard.

The courtyard, which is positioned one storey above ground, is filled with trees and is also used to disguise the residents' parking, which is positioned below it.

The scheme comprises a mix of social and private housing

"The Covid-19 pandemic showed everyone how valuable outdoor spaces close to their homes can be, and I hope Ilot Queyries can show that such amenities don’t require compromise," said MVRDV founder Winy Maas.

"Every apartment is provided a balcony or loggia, while the green park space becomes a wonderful community amenity."

The red courtyard is revealed through large openings around its edge

Ilot Queyrie is the largest building in a wider masterplan of four buildings that MVRDV has developed in collaboration with Joubert Architecture.

It has also been used as a testbed for MVRDV's housing within Bastide-Niel, another neighbourhood nearby for which it is also overseeing the masterplan.

Once complete, Bastide-Niel will see 35 hectares of former barracks and railyards in the city transformed into a mix of irregularly shaped housing, public and cultural facilities similar to Ilot Queyrie.

"This project served as preparation for the grander plan of the Bastide Niel development," added Maas.

"With this project we were able to test some of our ideas, which resulted in a masterplan with more greenery in the streets, better cost optimisation for facades, and more open courtyards."

Ilot Queyries is animated by its irregular layout and roofscape, which has been carefully arranged by the studio to maximise natural ventilation and light throughout the site.

The slopes of the roofs vary between 14 degrees and 45 degrees, depending on their relation to the sun.

The walls of the courtyard are lined with red stucco

The irregular forms of the housing also respond to the surroundings. For example, the south-eastern edge of the complex lowers in height to mirror the low-rises buildings next door.

In contrast, the northeast side of the development that overlooks the river reaches nine storeys in height to provide uninterrupted views of the water and the historic city centre beyond it. At the highest point, MVRDV has positioned the restaurant, which is enclosed by glass walls.

According to MVRDV, the irregular layout and roofscape of Ilot Queyries gave rise to "complex and interesting interior spaces".

This helped the studio to develop a wide range of apartments, catering to the needs of a variety of future residents.

Every apartment has a balcony

While the height and layout of the building vary on each side, its street-facing facades are all unified by a cream-coloured cladding that complements its surroundings.

In contrast, the courtyard-facing walls are finished in textured plaster with a bright red finish.

The restaurant is enclosed by glass at the highest point of the building

Red plaster was chosen to help enliven the courtyard area, in tandem with the 83 alder and birch trees and mix of grasses, chosen with landscape architect Sabine Haristoy.

MVRDV was founded by Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries in 1991. It is based in Rotterdam. Other housing projects by the studio include an enormous apartment building in the Indian city of Pune, which features a series of connected blocks with sloping roofs, and a proposal for a residential tower complex in Eindhoven, featuring plant-covered roofs.

The studio also recently hit the headlines for its design of Marble Arch Mound, an artificial hill built alongside London's Marble Arch. The installation was greeted by criticism after it opened before it was ready.

Stormloop op kaarten voor het najaar

Sinds donderdag 17 juni jl. heeft Stadsschouwburg & Philharmonie Haarlem de verkoop voor voorstellingen en concerten in het najaar geopend. Tot eind december is een zeer gevarieerd aanbod van ruim 100 voorstellingen te bezoeken. De eerste kaartverkoopresultaten zijn veelbelovend en tonen dat cultuur een essentiële rol speelt in het openbare leven. De Stadsschouwburg opent het seizoen in de buitenlucht met de zomerkomedie KENAU XL. Scapino Ballet Rotterdam staat een heel weekend in de zaal met theaterspektakel Casablanca, de totaalervaring Trojan Wars van Het Nationale Theater komt naar Haarlem en muziektheatergezelschap Orkater staat drie dagen in de zaal met De Vreemdeling. Cabaret is er van onder anderen Veldhuis & Kemper, Daniël Arends, Sanne Wallis de Vries en Tim Fransen. De jongste bezoekers kunnen genieten van Dolfje Weerwolfje, Juf Roos en meer. Hilde: Sprint 2 - Week 5

Deze week zijn wij als groep vooral bezig geweest met het concreet maken van het concept en daarna zijn we door gegaan met verschillende vlugge experimenten.

Om het concept weer concreet te maken heb ik deze week onze opdracht weer afgebakend:

Nu we het concept concreet hebben gemaakt kunnen we als groep focussen op de belangrijke punten van het concept.

Niels en ik zijn veel bezig geweest in de werkruimte met kleine experimenten met verschillende materialen. Wij richtte ons vooral op de beleving, de beweging en de optische illusie. Wij hebben experimenten gemaakt aan de hand van stopmotions, verschillende materialen en het combineren hiervan en de beweging.

Naast de foto’s heb ik ook een aantal stopmotions gemaakt op schaal. Hierdoor kan je beter zien wat het effect is van de vorm, de beweging en de optische illusie:

Bij deze twee bovenste stopmotions wilde ik kijken wat het effect kan zijn als er touwen boven de weg hangen en die reageren op de drukte.

Bij deze stopmotion wilde ik het touwen effect opnieuw uitproberen met een ander materiaal. Dit ging niet zo goed want dit materiaal was niet flexibel waardoor het niet goed mee bewoog. Dus met deze test kwam ik erachter dat hier een flexibel materiaal beter werkt voor het gewenste effect.

Bij de bovenste stopmotion probeerde ik op een andere manier een optische illusie te creëren. Bij deze test liet ik mezelf inspireren door een bestaand kunstwerk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_22x26qYPA (Start de video op 20:30). Wat ik zo interessant vind aan dit kunstwerk is dat het allemaal de zelfde vormen zijn die naast elkaar staan maar apart van elkaar bewegen. Door dat de vormen in elkaar lopen lijkt het of het 1 vorm is. Dit effect wilde ik ook creëren in de stopmotion en het zorgde wel voor het gewenste effect.

Deze experimenten hebben we aan Ruud laten zien en hij gaf ons als feedback dat we deze experimenten niet klein moeten houden maar ook aan moeten denken hoe het in het groot eruit komt te zien en wat voor effect het dan oplevert. Dit is iets wat we voor volgende week mee kunnen nemen. Persoonlijk denk ik dat het belangrijk is dat we van alle experimenten een keuze/bepaalde richting gaan kiezen die we in het groot kunnen gaan uitwerken en ook eventueel kunnen gaan testen.

Daarnaast kregen we ook als feedback dat we er rekening mee moeten houden dat de installatie op ware grote gerealiseerd moet kunnen worden.

Ruud gaf ook feedback over de adaptiviteit. Dus wanneer onze installatie gaat reageren en waarop. Dit hebben wij als groep besproken en we hebben ervoor gekozen dat het gaat reageren op de drukte. Dus de aantal auto’s in de straat.

Daarnaast heb ik deze week ook nog contact gehad met het Lux Lab. Ik heb een afspraak kunnen maken met Ellen de Vries. Zij is de eigenaar van het Lux Lab en ze staat ervoor open om haar kennis met ons te delen over verlichting en design. De afspraak staat ingepland op woensdag ochtend om 09:30. Dinsdag gaan we met de groep bespreken wat we precies uit de afspraak willen halen, welke vragen we willen gaan stellen en wat we willen bereiken met het gesprek. Het gesprek zal ongeveer 1 uur duren dus we moeten die tijd goed benutten.
