MYSTERY OF LUPA
Tumblr media
Mystreet: Mystery of Lupa is a rework of the story Mystreet, working the magic into the system from the very beginning.
I want it to have a kind of 80s horror movie vibe sometimes, That sometimes being when werewolf attacks start popping up over the neighborhood, so i’ll probably build the main characters with motw playbooks since thats easy.
I also, like many other mystreet rewriters, want it to be less stereotype-y when it comes to characters. more modern, as it were.
I’ll keep you guys updated on character designs and story ideas.
For now, heres our list of characters and their corresponding color(just the neighborhood)
Purple- Aspen Jones (Aphmau) | The Divine
Pink- Aikiko Aishi (KC) | The Pararomantic
Sunset- Nicole Anderson | The Mundane
Lime- Travis Duguay | The Flake
Blue- Gareth Ro’meave | The Athlete
Black- Nicodemus Ro’meave (Zane) | The Spooky
Red- Dante Fucklittle | The Crooked
Forest- Vix Ro’meave (Vylad) | The Chosen
Sky- Katelyn Jones | The Protector
Orange- Florian Adam (Laurance) | The Skeptic
Gray- Lucia Messala (Lucinda) | The Spellslinger
Lemon- Cadenza Adam (Cadenza) | The Expert
Yellow- Lupa Amoux (Aaron) | The Monstrous

Barbelle | Episode 5
Featured Music: “Work Study #1” by Casey MQ “Dance Like You” by Unbuttoned “Clear Cut” by Barbelle
First of all, I really like the guy playing the director here. He looks like he finished his shift at the Lockhart just early enough to hit up Crews & Tangos before cover begins.
Second of all, THIS MUSIC VIDEO THOUGH. The graphics make me want to fall down an Enya hole on YouTube. The entire thing is such a disaster and I bow down to whoever made the behind-the-scenes decision IRL to shoot it like this. Every single shot is gloriously bad. When green screen is good, it's good, but when it's bad, it's so much better.
I don't think I can come up with a critique of the video that even comes close to being as spot on as the reviewer comments played over the end credits. This episode was perhaps my favourite so far this season, but damn if that voiceover didn’t steal the show.
In the immortal words of Reviewer 10: Like me the naked ladies, not loving the…or do I love it? I think I do…
Best quip: "I want it to feel like a Céline homage."
Gayest moment: Feeling each other's heartbeats Runner-up: Hashing out the details of your still-fresh breakup at work because of course you work with your ex Honourable mention: Dragging your S/O to a weird art sex party
Aubrey D. Graham Award: The recognition that Nuit Blanche is just for getting wasted

'We cheer for everybody,' says fan at Special Olympics
They’re off and running on Day 1 of the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.
The excitement of the athletes is matched, by the exuberance in the stands.
“Watching these athletes and watching them train -- they train all year and then they come to these events,” said Patricia Jones a Yukon supporter. “You know, I can’t do this, so it’s pretty inspirational.”
Nicole Roberts of Antigonish is a Special Olympics veteran. Her family loves cheering for the hometown girl.
“She’s been in it for how many years mom?  35?” said Michelle Roberts Chevarie, Nicole’s sister. “35 years so yeah, we all come together. Yeah, we're very proud.”
As the Games kicked off, the federal minister of science and sport had people cheering with a special announcement.
“We will provide an additional $16 million over five years, and an additional two million dollars in ongoing annual funding after that,” Minister Of Science and SportKirsty Duncan told a crowd of onlookers.
“It will mean more coaches, more support for our outstanding athletes.”
The minister presented the first medal of the games to Maxime Duguay of Quebec, winner of the men's 10,000-metre race.
His family was excited and beaming with pride.
“And he did a very good time under a pretty hot temperature,” said Chantal Villeneuve, a Quebec supporter.“I'm very proud for him and we hope many more to come.”
Even athletes getting ready for the next race show their support for the other competitors. The louder the crowd, the better it feels for everyone participating.
And real fans don't just cheer for their favorites.
“We cheer for everybody,” said Brent Fay of Nova Scotia. “I mean, it’s all about competing and doing your best and trying to raise up everybody's spirits and keep things going. It's a very fun event. It's not like your traditional events where it’s win at all costs, but everybody wins.”
The campus and the town may be close to bursting, but if you're interested in catching some of the Games, as they say, there's always room for more.

Barbelle | Episode 1
Barbelle is finally here and I couldn’t be more excited.
Call it dramatic if you must, but the first minute of episode one is a freaking whirlwind. Alice (Gwen Cumyn) and Veronica (Karen Knox) are at a bar together. Alice makes out with a random girl and then immediately gets hit on, hard, by another fan. The bandmates flee giddily to a back room to get a moment to themselves, and a short game of keep-away with Veronica's phone gives us our first kiss of the series at 0:58. Truly, this is gay heaven.
I'm not kidding, you guys. Cuymn and Knox are ladies who know how to kiss other ladies, and that's a Big Fucking Deal. They're giving us established queer characters from the get-go without all the angsty gay panic that mainstream shows find so damn compelling (apparently). It's just two girls who are believably interested in each other making out in a bar, because – spoiler alert – queer people are pretty average most of the time. No disrespect to angst, but this is a really refreshing introduction to characters' sexual orientation
The costumes in the social media recap overview are gay AF and I'm wondering if Veronica's bow tie is a clip on or if she tied it herself like the dramatic asshole we'll soon come to know her as. It's delightful. (My notes here legitimately just say "Leather vests?? THANK YOU".)
Fast forward two years later to a nondescript office building and the first blatant reference to the series' hometown of Toronto. Alice and Veronica have arrived at their manager's office for a meeting (hi, Xavier Lopez!) and clearly some shit has gone down because they're there to announce their breakup – both personally and professionally.
I can't decide what I like more about their manager, Karen: the makeup that would make a Disney villain proud, or when she straight-up tells Veronica and Alice that they're more or less useless as individuals. While Veronica has the much-needed charisma and social media know-how, Alice has the musical talent and focus – essentially what you'd get if Kesha was split into two people – so neither can exist as an artist without the other.
Per their contract, they have to continue living together in what I can only assume is a tiny one-bedroom apartment because they don't have $15 million dollars and therefore can't afford a one bedroom plus den in Toronto.
The end of the episode is a framed YouTube video which shows Barbelle announcing their sophomore album. Veronica and Alice seem totally committed to putting on a charade for their fans, but their physical intimacy becomes awkward the second they turn the camera off. Veronica walks away in the background and we're left lingering on Alice's face as she processes her ~feelings~.
Oh, I could get used to this.
Best quip: "Oh my god. What? No. I don't want glitter on anything, especially not the horses."
Gayest moment: Unironically wearing a jean jacket in the club
Runner-up: Baking vegan brownies for your girlfriend because you lost a bet to her
Honorable mention: Being jealous that somebody else got a photo with Tegan & Sara
Aubrey D. Graham Award for Best Toronto Reference: That streetcar that took up almost the entire screen at 1:40

Barbelle | Episode 4
Featured music: “Le Crush” by Lulu (Cynthia Hicks) “Procession” by Featurette
Hands up if you know all the words to Le Crush now!
Veronica really doubled down on the nasty ex façade, didn’t she? I still stand by my blatant favouritism, but damn she made it hard in this episode. I still felt bad for her by the end of it, sure, but I can understand why Alice has moved beyond accommodating her feelings to just avoiding her as much as possible.
It took me a few replays to notice Alice hilariously flopping her gum out of her mouth into the makeup artist’s hand — I was too focused on Veronica's realization that Alice and Lulu are seeing each other. And as soon as the scene cut to the hallway, that realization morphed directly into horror. Karen Knox played this wonderfully. Alice, on the other hand, looked like she was getting closer and closer to puking. Both very realistic reactions, I think, so brava to the actresses on this one.
The entire thing was gloriously angsty. There's no way this won't end poorly and I am so ready for it.
Best quip: "Don't be jealous of Veronica's charity." "Yeah, I'm a humanitarian."
Gayest moment: Screaming about how much you're not in love with the girl you're definitely into Runner-up: Veronica's boots Honourable mention: Wearing the same shirt as your girlfriend/ex
Aubrey D. Graham Award: All of the CTV ads on the building in the establishing shot

Barbelle | Episode 2
Featured Music: “Le Crush” by Lulu (Cynthia Hicks) “You’re What I Dreamed Of” by Lisa
First of all, I saved you the Google time: Yes, our Scientology building is on Yonge Street. No, CBC-3 is not a thing. Yes, all bakeries on Queen Street are, by definition, pretentious. No, StFX doesn’t hate gay people. And yes, you will get clocked as not from here if you pronounce the second T in "Toronto".
Second of all, did anyone else get Kristen Stewart vibes from Alice when Veronica turned her flirt meter up to eleven? Either way, I'm into it.
My Twitter-quality notes for this episode included these gems: Veronica how dare you waste a perfectly good vanilla dip for a photo op @Alice where do I get black pants with pockets that big I swear I’ll buy them
This episode was so quick on its feet that I can hardly begin to pick out my favorite moments. It gave us a lot of good, concrete plot, and I really appreciate that the writers had enough confidence in their first episode that they didn’t waste time in this one on more character exposition.
And yet, we still got lots of new info about most of the characters we've met thus far. Judging by her letter to Brooklyn, Veronica genuinely wants to do good things for other people despite being a self-absorbed jerk face most of the time. Alice's thing with Lulu means she's definitely not as honest as she first seemed. How long has this been going on, and how much longer will it take for Veronica to find out about it? There's no telling how all of this is going to play out, but the important thing is that everyone is really freaking gay.
I feel like it's important to note that the show didn't start off with a gay premise and subsequently tone it down for the actual series. The whole thing is just straight up gay, and in a very different way from the mainstream. It's nice that the characters can just exist as people. Sure, their sexualities are relevant, and very clearly on the table, but it's not some huge production. The leads have chemistry, but they don't have to be macking on each other the whole time for us to see that. I do believe in the importance of showing queer characters having revelations about themselves because for a lot of queer youth the only other queer people in their lives are the ones they see on screen. That said, I'm just so damn excited for a conventional love story where the couple happens to be queer. Give me protagonists with unrealistically cool lives, oodles of workplace drama, the works. I'm here for all of it.
Best quip: "Listen, Canada's Got Talent, just because you have a stupid pop hit rotating on Indie88 right now does not mean that you are not one hundred percent replaceable." Gayest moment: Alice's smile when she opens the note from Lulu Runner-up: Not being able to take your girlfriend to prom Honorable mention: Karen's beetle collar Aubrey D. Graham Award: Veronica refusing to work with anyone who has played at Lee's Palace in the past year

Barbelle | Episode 3
Featured music: “Small Fry” feat. Mikey Maybe by Christian Hansen “Bit More Mad” by Victoria Long “Roam” by Tommy and Livid
This episode was hilarious for so many reasons, one of which is the fact that I have definitely baked a pie for a cute girl with gay decals on the crust. Balloon Guy also deserves a mention.
I'm going to stop here because I want to get this out before I go any further: Lulu had her first lady kiss! A big step in her personal journey, for sure, and an important contrast to the other, more established gays of the series. It also gives the plot some nice forward momentum. It was so tempting to choose as the gayest moment, but I think we all reached higher levels of gay in this one.
I feel like this is the Veronica-iest we have seen Veronica so far. Her late-night moment in the cold open was somehow both manipulative and honest at the same time. I don't want to play favourites this early in the series, but I'll admit she's quickly climbing to the top of my list. Seeing her interact with people other than Alice (even though Alice was still the topic of conversation) was a real treat. Her back-and-forth with Richard barely felt scripted at all.
Everyone’s Canadian accents were as strong as ever, which was nice considering the absurd reach I had to make to give out the award for best Toronto reference this episode. For a few minutes, it was almost like the show took place in an unnamed North American city that happens to give great tax credits to production crews but still wants to be relatable to US audiences.
Best quip: "Some unsolicited advice from one gay to another? Emotional blackmail has worked wonders for me."
Gayest moment: Having eye sex with your ex-girlfriend while her current sweetheart is watching Runner-up: Alice’s grade one–esque rainbow shirt and overalls Honourable mention: (soft ukulele)
Aubrey D. Graham Award: Name-dropping Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes (again)

Toronto's Barbelle Series Premiere: A Recap
Season one of new web series Barbelle premiered in Toronto on July 23rd and I'm already in withdrawal (catch the trailer here!).
This show is good. Really good.
Co-leads Gwenlyn Cumyn and Karen Knox (who also served as writers and producers) have fantastic chemistry. They take viewers on a roller coaster ride of queerness as bandmates Alice (Cumyn) and Veronica (Knox) surprise themselves by becoming girlfriends just as their careers are taking off, only to break up before they're set to record their sophomore album as Canadian pop duo Barbelle. Their record label explicitly requires them to do public appearances as a couple, but without $15 million to buy out their contract our heroines are stuck in the most expensive fake relationship AU of all time.
Each episode opens with an absurdly catchy intro that I would never willingly skip even if I wasn't watching all ten of them back-to-back in a theater in downtown Toronto. Director Kelly Paoli easily weaves the ice cream and pop tart motif of the intro (from graphic designer Anna Cumyn) throughout the series — both wardrobe and set design are the epitome of 90's nostalgia done right. If you're one of the series' 200+ Indiegogo campaign backers, you know that the leads have the musical talent to anchor a project like this. Thankfully, the episodes have very specific credits so you aren't left wondering which damn song is stuck in your head (and I promise you they will get stuck).
Recurring stars include Kiana Madeira, Naomi Gaskin, and Cynthia Hicks round out a fantastically female-heavy cast (not to mention a guest appearance by everyone's favorite lesbian vampire), and the series isn't shy about its Canadian roots. Mentions of Toronto neighborhoods and hangouts, deliciously familiar to local viewers, are sprinkled throughout the season, so keep an ear out for those as well as name-drops of some very recognizable Canadian talents.
The matinee screening eventually transitioned into an evening after party where Cumyn and Knox extended thanks to essentially "everybody in [our] phone contacts list" for helping get the season made. And with a creative team like this — not to mention a promise to never kill off any gay characters — I'm betting it's the first of many.
You can catch the series in two weeks on BellFibe TV's Video on Demand service and on YouTube in September.
