hpng characters and how they study for exams because im literally dying rn

rose- academic weapon. need i say more. she has the pomodoro technique down pat. she’s the girl at your local library claiming an entire table with an outlet to herself so she can plug her chunky ass laptop into it and make sure it doesn’t explode on her. she has a sugary iced drink near her at all times but she only takes a sip when she feels she’s deserved it. she eats dinner at 1am because she will not let herself move from her desk until she’s completed the practicals she has laid out in front of her. but trust that she’s losing hair and she’s greasy asf and her short fuse is basically nonexistent. she’s also always randomly sick during exam prep, but her symptoms are never bad enough to warrant a doctor’s visit, it’s only hella inconvenient so she’s chugging neuyrofen and vitamin c like her life’s on the line. no special consideration for her. when she experiences one minor setback (technical malfunction, stubbed her toe, bit her tongue etc) she starts angry crying immediately. just don’t speak to her during exam time, she’ll slap you for breaking her concentration.

albus- exam period what exam period. what are you talking about. these assignments aren’t worth half of his grade what do you mean. you’re telling him the essay was due at 5pm today and not 11:59………………. number one— doesn’t cope well at all. in denial until the twenty-four hour mark before his assignments are due and then will lock in as hard as he can but it is absolutely not a pretty process. so don’t even talk to him about it before then. number two— it’s not like he was relaxing during swotvac (idk the british term for swotvac leave me alone) period, my boy was stressed asf he was just procrastinating. you know when you’re too stressed to do literally anything. albus is a prisoner during exam period free my boy. he can’t study, he can’t relax. when he fucks up because of his poor time management he will psychoanalyse everything about himself and convince himself he’s the stupidest mammal to walk on two legs with five fingers. the mental abuse he puts himself through after submitting the shittiest 2000 word essay is crazy. but he is an affront to the english language (he’s surprisingly alright at exams cuz he’s really good at bulshitting, just don’t make him write anything longform 😭 he can’t back up his impassioned opinions with any evidence ok)

victoire- she is the influencer on studytok that makes studying for eight hours straight look like the most aesthetically pleasing pastime ever. her skin is clean, her hair is washed, her clothes are pressed, her eating and sleeping schedule is routine. she’s so not real.

james- most people think he’s an academic weapon because most people will just see the results he gets at the end of the marking period and conclude he’s hella smart. but if they saw the type of basement-dwelling creature he turns into during the study period they would be horrified. he doesn’t touch grass, he doesn’t leave his room, his lips are chapped asf. in fact his room is growing into a whole new ecosystem to account for the cave-dwelling lifestyle james has going on. he’s got the most psycho routine ever, no sane person would replicate this. he’s so mad-scientist-scribbling-incoherent-observations-at-his-barely-lit-desk-at-midnight core. he never sleeps, he only has intervals of three hour naps so it doesn’t disrupt his sleep inertia. friends can’t text or call or reach out to him— he’s on dnd for the next two weeks. you’d think he died. his siblings think he’s doing cocaine in his room to keep himself up. there is the occasional james sighting around 5am where he may trudge out of his room like a night stalker to make himself tea. his face is gaunt and ghostly and his body is brittle and awkward. don’t speak to him because he’s not going to respond he’s too busy spacing out through the entire exam period. if you do get a word out of him it’ll probably not be in a language understood in this world. best he keep to his room.

hugo- he’s absolutely broke yet the only way he can cope is through impulsive storms of online shopping and doing shopping hauls on his close friends. if he had it his way he’d wind down the night with some dti with the boys but hermione has that boy’s arse glued to the dining chair and she and rose are circling hawks scrutinising all of his answers and then insisting to mark his pracs for him. in all realness they do save him because his marks are always pretty good in the end.

teddy- simply did not study if the subject didn’t appeal to him. one of those woke students that truly believed that marks did not equate to worth. knew he would only feasibly want to pursue careers in the subjects he liked so would prioritise one or two subjects. motivational speaker to all his friends. actually didn’t let exams stop him from living his life. his speeches on the wotters aren’t so successful since a lot of them highkey gaf about their results. rose gets pissed off every time he tries with her. victoire politely ignores him. james is disassociating through the entire speech. he doesn’t even attempt it with percy’s kids. bad luck ted.

lily- if there is a person who is the exact type of person who isn’t built for studying, it’s her. she can get away with it at the start of her schooling, because she is quite smart, but when it gets serious its the biggest humbling ever. she just can’t lock in. she’ll have an exam the next day and suddenly she’s knocking on albus’ door and is willing and wanting to listen to him complain about Life Problem #218. she’s suddenly volunteering to help her mum garden and help her dad cook. she’s going to ‘study sessions’ with friends where she forces them to do anything but study. she’s binge watching shows with james. she’s picking up a new hobby in juggling. she’s attacked by a new hyperfixation she can’t get out of her head and she has to spend 6 hours a day looking at fanart. like girl go study. james will give her the most bomb (but lowkey psycho) tips on how to lock in and she’ll get motivated until she looks at her prac and sees an 8 mark short answer question. like goodnight she’s having a nap. also she eats everything in the fridge, no snacks are safe. fuck the no sugar rule fr. she’s not even hungry she just convinces herself she is so she can do literally anything else besides that 8 mark question waiting for her on her desk in her room.

dominique- would drop out.

scorpius- he’s a fucking freak because he probably likes the stress of exam period 💀 like he probs does feel stress about it, but since he’s always constantly stressed out this isn’t anything new to him. “i get to pour over all my in-detail notes i’ve written on all these subjects through the semester again?? and then do an assessment regarding the in-detail notes i have? yippee!!” his optimism is absolutely not shared by his peers but he’s so oblivious to it. he’s fantasising about what topic questions he’ll get and what his damn body paragraphs are going to be. he’s the guy seated behind you in the exam who unintentionally peer pressures you by requesting for another booklet because he’s written too much in the first. he’s the one joyfully skipping up to you after the test is over and excitedly asking for what you wrote about or what answers you got, and when he shares his responses with you, you realise his points were better or his answers were actually correct. and then he’s emailing his teachers every week asking for when the marks will be released because he’s just so excited. weirdo.

ok ngl i think there’s way too much overthinking when it comes to the hw’s gen 3 timeline (esp when it comes to hiyori’s story, bc let’s face it: it’s gloriously messy)

and so, my spicin’ hot, incredibly dumb take is: there are 2 separate ‘verses of hiyori’s story. 1: a princely love interest au with asuka in the novels, and 2: the canon story with nagisa

‘verse 1: let hiyori have her prince, please!!

the novel ‘verse is fairly straightforward, i’d say, with nonfantasy (nonfan) leading smoothly into heroine ikusei keikaku (heroiku), especially since ascana + maeda were established as cameo characters in nonfan. and heroiku even has an mv!!! so that should be how the canon story is supposed to go, right?

‘verse 2: oh but, the mvs say… what?????

fast forward to the dark ages (read: the [redacted] anime), and the timeline has become ✨a hot mess✨. asuka was booted from the plot (along with his fellow streamer idol bf), nagisa has been slotted in as hiyori’s love interest(?) for a grand total of, what, 30 minutes of total screentime, only to be never seen again, and yujiro’s police encounter has been revealed to be because… he (aged 15) snuck into a bar to rescue his younger brother???? but, no, this isn’t about yujiro. let’s put him aside for a sec.

anyways, with nagisa’s (honestly objectively forced) introduction into the main gen 3 plot, there came a new pair of songs to the love series lineup: heroine wa heikin ika. (heroika) and suki na ko ni usotsuita. (sukiuso).

first off, heroika: the plot of heroika mainly draws from the [redacted] anime, from the second half of ep 6 all the way to the end of ep 7, along with a small background exposition of nghy’s middle school life (in hiyori’s pov, nagisa’s a well-liked hero who even has a fanclub, and she’s just a background character in comparison… but, wait, everyone seems to think that they’re dating?? why???? there’s no way!!!!!!), so there seems to be kind of an assumption that the viewer has seen the episodes in question, as hiyori doesn’t touch on her makeover at all.

but the main point of it is that hiyori doesn’t know what it means to be in love, which is. y’know. pretty different from her attitude towards love in heroiku.

and next: sukiuso: sukiuso is the complementary song to heroika, giving exposition to background events in heroika (the “your skirt didn’t suit you” scene from nghy’s childhood, the mention of hiyori’s makeover, the reason for nagisa’s tokyo visit, the confession that hiyori was having a crisis™️ over in heroika) amidst nagisa’s whipped fawning over hiyori for 3 minutes and 47 seconds.

put heroika and sukiuso together, and you basically have 80% of the picture about the good parts in eps 6-7. there’s less lxl involvement ofc, but this isn’t about them.

and, following the [redacted] anime’s lead, heroine tarumono! (herotaru)’s plot comes in rather easily after nagisa’s return to izumo. chizuchan puts up pictures of hiyori’s lxl-given makeover for the asuka confession nagisa meet and greet, chizuchan and hiyori duke it out in the halls, then they make up, and now they’re closer than ever. yay for friendship!

[i assume heroine to idol (heroidol) happens somewhere around here in an unspecified time, in which hiyori realises just how charming idols like lxl are, probably after working with them for quite a while. fly high, hiyori… i hope you don’t see their repaint dance…]

and so, hard cut to a year later, in kimi wo kawaikusaseta no wa doko no doitsu (kimikawaii) we see hiyori, as a second year, return home to izumo! she’s looking cuter than ever, and now it’s nagisa’s turn to have a crisis™️ about what in the world happened in the time they were apart.

but, either way, as of the time of this post, heroine no hero is coming out soon™️, and from the title and jacket illustration, hiyori, our all-loving heroine, has finally realised her feelings for nagisa in their uni arc!!!! huge win!!!! nghy for life!!!!!!!

but wait, you say, two songs have been forgotten!!!

and to that, well~~~~~~

koiiro ni sake: the creators have mentioned multiple times in supplementary media (magazine interviews, ymk’s fanbox) that hiyori and yujiro were never meant to be a couple. they’re just a pair of gen 3 students that appeared to indicate that a new gen was about to begin. that’s all. koiiro is not, and never has been, evidence for yhy canon.

heroiku: this. this is pretty much the song that throws all of the timeline theories into disarray, from ascana’s appearance, to the possibility of 2 lxl makeovers, to hiyori’s longing to fall in love with a prince that just… turned into genuine confusion about what it means to love.

and to that, this is where you need to prepare the pitfall traps as i say… heroiku… is the theme song for ‘verse 1: the au novel ‘verse with asuka. granted, it has nothing to do with the current main timeline, but it’s a fun little song that gave us hiyori content when we needed it the most (back when all we had was the nonfan novel and mv). it’s hiyori’s very first solo song, her second trio song with her 2 besties (for the 4th special ed), and it showed us how she landed the unfortunate job as lxl’s manager.

so, all in all, i think hiyori’s story song/mv-wise goes:

[1st verse of heroiku (becoming the manager of lxl)] -> [helping out in the filming of the nonfan mv (not actually seen in-mv)] -> [heroika/sukiuso] -> [herotaru] -> [sunny party (and probably heroidol)] -> [kimikawaii] -> [herohero]

…or so i think. it’s pretty choppy, but it makes more sense (to me) than hiyori going from “can i become a heroine if i fall in love with a dashing prince?” to “hahshdjshsjajsjajsjsja w h a t is love??? tell me julieta~~~” in just a matter of weeks/months…

i know the thought that they released an au before the canon story is pretty weird, but… these are the same people who came up with ultimate puu, so… y’know~~~ stuff gets weird around ‘ere~~~~~

but i dunno for sure~~~~ the hw timeline has always been weird, between novels, anime adaptations, and even within the mvs (even sometime within the same mv) themselves~~~

just look at the summer session mv for instance. gen 1 has always been the most straightforward gen, and the summer session mv has. like. 3 timelines going on all at once (nacchan saying that haruki returned to japan [when he only left after they graduated], mochiaka fireworks confession [???], and the harucouple scenes seeming to take place while they were in high school [as seen in the harucouple anime]). also, the summer session novel takes place 2 years after they graduated, so there’s now a 4th summer session timeline thrown in. cheers!!!! and that’s not even counting the summer session 2021 novel, which has both flashbacks and flashforwards! yay!!!!

…and so i genuinely think it’s best to just roll with the most recent official media as they come. no need to overthink anything; just sit back, relax, and enjoy the nghy~~~~

Like I’m getting really annoyed with how long shows are taking in between seasons. Idk if it’s just bc of Covid time (2020-2021) that slowed things down initially or now it’s the strike (which I support) but either way the fact that it’s a norm to wait 2 years for 8 episodes with mid CGI is outrageous to me tbh. Not just in terms of Gen V but literally every show is taking multiple years just to drop 8 eps. Like whattt is this

no like…i miss when we had 20 episode seasons and a hiatus in the middle bc that meant we had to wait LESS time for seasons, plus ALL THE CONTENT. i miss filler episodes so much, but we can’t even afford that anymore bc there is no time and it’s lowkey EXHAUSTING.

now it’s just like….here’s 8 episodes, short as HELL, and you have to wait minimum a year and a half for the next season. i’m so sick of it, streamers really ruined tv a bit for me i’m not gonna lie, i hate that this is the new norm.

and i totally get that things happen, like with covid and the strike (which i also support!), but this was a problem that started wayyyyy before covid and it’s only getting worse i think.
