I think a lot about Lucemon from Digimon World Re:digitize: Decoded and Digimon World: Next Order because neither are technically evil, at least not intentionally.

Spoilers, if you haven't checked out the games, I guess?

Decoded Lucemon is pretty much a little kid that got seperated by it's gaurdian and friend angemon and kidnapped by Barbamon (most likely the very same one you confront with Rina in Cyber Sleuth, yep...). Lucemon, along with several other unfortunate digimon, was tortured and experimented by Barabamon and left for dead calling for help in a bolted prison cell until the protagonist breaks it open only to see him succum to his injuries. This results in the child Lucemon's digicore being overcome by malice and turning to Falldown Mode. Barbamon adds insult to injury by continuing to brainwash Lucemon FM to the point where he's become a mindless killing machine. Eventually, it digivolves into Lucemon SM and almost destroys both the digital world and the real world. After it's defeated, Lucemon's (rookie/child level) spirit thanks you for stopping it, says that everything should return to normal on its own, and the spirit returns home. Needless to say, Lucemon's circumstances in De:code is kinda horrifying and Barbamon is the worst.

And then there is -Next 0rder-'s Lucemon who is arguably the most chill Lucemon so far (both figuratively and literally, you meet him in an ice dungeon during post-game content). Many, if not all, of the digimon who were initially introduced in Digimon lore and animes as villains are a lot more laid-back and sometimes down right friendly in-game and some don't need to fight you in order for them to become your ally (It's kinda refreshing, really). The Lucemon here is no different, and in-fact takes a very unique interest in the protagonist, first approching you as a rookie to tell you that they've been watching you since the begining of your journey, and then challenging you in FM and later SM, albiet asking the player some philisophical questions over "what defines good and evil" to either test, startle, or just confuse the protag. Once the fighting is done Lucemon confirms that it's not the protagonist's strength that defines them as a force of good but rather the their perserverence and conviction. They also start talking in a more casual tone with you and join the city where you've been recruiting a whole bunch of other digimon to live in. They also help you out in a DLC quest with Beezlebumon, which is pretty neat!

Can't rememer if this is correct but I believe Next 0rder Lucemon also keeps track of your in-game movements. From wins and loses, money earned, traversed areas?, etc.

I complain about how Bandai handles Digimon a lot but it's driving me insane that it took like 8 fucking years for Digimon World Next 0rder to reach one million sales.

It feels like genuinely tragic to me, and baffling that a legacy brand like Digimon seems to struggle like this. Even with more popular games like Cyber Sleuth, it still took years to break 1m.

It really feels like a failing on Bandai's part and I'm sure they don't care but I'm going to stop now and go to work before I end up rambling about how sad it makes me seeing Kamen Rider and Pretty Cure get a lot of fun toys for like every season and then with Digimon they don't do like anything, even during Ghost Game's airing.

I totally understand why like and people change I’m not hating promise etc but seeing the way lewis treats Ollie with the generational knowledge inside of my body of how lewis decided 17yo max was his enemy and needed to be taught a lesson makes me totally insane 😭😭😭😭😭😭 even everyone this weekend is treating ollie like he’s a little baby (he is 🥹) but like max was also a baby and people were calling for max’s head race one 😭

hundred percent get how u feel bro same. Lil bear does not represent what Max represented when he got into the car tho there is no sense of impending doom wid Ollie. Bro is talented exceeded a lot of expectations held his own nobody can say otherwise but he is not somebody who has been foretold fjkjdd. Like hes not coming from the depths of darkness ((nation that is not England or Italy)) to challenge established, up until then, pretty untouchable veterans, and wid a certain . unapologetic flare 😭 Also I'm not sure Lewis is the same person, and he doesnt have the same car, the grid isnt the same, the media definitely isnt the same, the pecking 0rder isnt the same, f1 itself feels like a completely different sport than it was in 2020 let alone when Max came in. Ollie's dad did not come across the way Max's dad does either. Its crazy because Lewis went thru a similar loneliness when he debuted partly due to his talent partly due to how there had never been someone who looked like him in such a white classist space. He was subjected to a type of scrutiny that Max will never experience. And then also u have peak german biter Seb vettel u cud say wasnt 'babied' at all either and then sharl in 2019 like if the threat is substantial the fantasy kinda breaks and the 'rookie' becomes fair game. So its just super different situations wid a lot of heavy context that is interesting to compare. Ollie's teammate cud be in the same position as soon as next year ((unless our fucking pookie.com takes his seat)) and depending on where he finishes this year, and I think so far hes been doing amazing, he'll be welcomed wid relief because 9 years later that 'impeding doom' still dooming and impeding lmfao

What's you're favorite digimon world game?

Digimon World: RE:Digitize Decode.

I think it acts as a proper successor to the original Digimon World and is a lot more fun and immersive than Next 0rder.

Like, comparatively, I have 300+ hours in Decode, compared to beating Next 0rder in less than 24 hours, and never playing it again.

The other reason why Decode is my favorite, is because I had a proper adventure or what I liked to call a "V-Tamer Experience", and though the experience is solely my own, I can say that I met my Digimon Partner through that game.

While I know it's popular to use guides and such for Digimon World Games, in my opinion, the best experience you can possibly have with them is when you play them blind, and figure things out on your own.

Of course, no one likes the idea that they might be bad at raising Digimon, or that they might not raise what they want-- but I think the most important take away from raising a Digimon in this manner is that your Digimon is a reflection of your care towards them.

Should it really matter, if the Digimon you raise isn't the one you were going for? Are you the kind of person who would treat a Digimon different, just because it didn't turn into something you liked? Would you try and redo it over and over to get something different? Would you delete them or throw them away, because they didn't become what you wanted?

I had this realization during my playthrough of Decode, when I got a Digimon that I disliked. I didn't have it in me to treat them differently, because what they became wasn't their fault-- and when they evolved into a Digimon I hated, I horrified myself when I briefly entertained the thought of just waiting for them to die so I could try again, without letting them ever accomplishing anything.

I don't know about you, but that was the moment I realized that I didn't deserve a Digimon-- so I had to be better, to be the partner that my Digimon deserved. When it was all over, that's when I made the second realization that that my partner was what I needed, and not what I thought I wanted or what I thought suited me best.

And now, in the end, 11 years later, because of that, Magnamon is still the one I love the most.

So yeah. Decode changed my perspective on Digimon entirely, lmfao.

That's more than a reason of why it's my favorite, right?

Playing next 0rder for the first time. I'm having an absolute blast. But I also know that knowing what I was getting myself into before hand is probably a huge portion of it. I've watched playthroughs of the original World, and review videos, as well as a playthrough of next 0rder itself and Re:Digitize. And also just knowing about how de-evolution is a near constant in this franchise probably also helps. I definitely probably couldn't recommend it cold, because who in their right mind would intuitively know that the cycle of "restarting" is part of the appeal and progress is marked more by the progress of the city than your monsters, which in turn helps you get better at raising your monsters. But as someone who also enjoys her 20th anniversary Digimon V-Pet this is just the same thing but faster with more options. It's great. Anyway the characters may not be super in depth (which is fine I'm here for my digimon partners and helping them grow big and strong). But Himari, despite her limited characterization has my attention. She's her sister's primary caregiver? It also feels like her sisters are her only family to her, she probably has a dad who in true anime dad fashion is busy with work. But she still acted like she was leaving her sisters completely alone, so what degree of responsibility is she taking on for her sisters. Definitely being parentified to an extent but to what extent? Does she have a proper support network? Also the wording "doesn't have a mom" could be anything. Is she dead? Digimon's never shied away from that before, so why wouldn't they just say it. Did her mom leave, or is the vagueness just to leave it to imagination? Also her sisters are 2nd graders? So, 7 or 8, which means they would have been babies at the time of the tournament 7 years ago. Was the tournament a last happy memory for her before, whatever left her motherless happened? I'm definitely overthinking it but there is just enough character there to be interesting enough for me to chew on for a bit. Also "Mameo" being a teacher is great. He really showed up trying to do his protaganist thing and then now has to mentor these new teen protags when he's been doing this since he was younger than them, for as long as they've been alive. So now he's basically this old wisened mentor despite being in like. His early 30s at most. And also it contrasts with analogman. An adult man who is the only human there with experience with the digital world. Mameo grew from an analogboy into a more benevolent analogman of sorts.

thinking about that one video (Pokémon Fan Plays A Digimon Game And Hated It) about that girl who somehow beat Dawn without learning how to dedigivolve or scan new Digimon. She beat the game with an Apollomon, a MetalSeadramon, a Megidramon, and no idea what was happening or how to play at all

Jaiden Animations! I LOVE her videos! I saw someone posting to an ace blog I follow going "DID YOU SEE JAIDEN IS ONE OF US" like. minutes after she posted that coming out video so I've been watching hers ever since haha.

Anyway, yeah! I saw that video and it was SPOT ON in like almost every way, like in the background there were people mourning ReArise and all (I was like "THAT'S ME") but I did wince a little at the top screen island being empty... girl no

But, like, if someone came up to me and asked "Hey, I hear you like Digimon, I'm looking to get into it, which game should I start with?" I... don't know what I would say. Probably ask what kind of genre they liked, since they cover such a wide range. But yeah,

Digimon World 1 is a game I'd suggest to someone if I could guide them through it directly because it's so weird and difficult (in the same way that a petulant child can be difficult)

DW2 I think I played in a really weird and roundabout way anyway so I don't know if I'd rec that but it's not really bad per se

DW3 my complaints are EXACTLY what she brought up (no fast travel and LOTS of backtracking)

DW4 I haven't actually played all that much so all I can say is "idk it seems okay"

Rumble Arena 1 and 2 are pretty good if you like fighting games and they've got some cool mechanics but there's not much substance to them

Digimon World DS, Dawn and Dusk are pretty neat but they can be pretty finicky to deal with (and I share her pain at the absolute maze nature of the damn maps) but by god the sprite work is gorgeous

Cyber Sleuth is WHERE IT'S AT so I guess I'd suggest that one? I figured out that the continuous missions from the board are random and not essential several weeks into it so idk maybe don't do that over and over? I haven't played Hacker's Memory yet but I'm gonna!

Battle Spirit = no

Digimon Racing = I would play this game if you paid me for it but otherwise I ALREADY DID MY TIME.

Obviously Digimon World Re:Digitize and Next 0rder have the same gameplay problems as Digimon World 1, mayyyybe I'd suggest Next 0rder for the perfect blend of weird and interesting gameplay and modern gameplay experience? If it's not your thing to play, it's not your thing, tbh. (It very much is MY thing, though haha)

I think I posted a comment on the video when I watched it, but I guess my suggestion for which game to play first is... don't? Watch the anime first?? idk man it's better to go in for the love of the creatures bc I will probably suffer through a terrible game if they gove me a Veemon to make up for it but if you don't have that sort of attachment then it's hard to make it feel worth it!!
