Jared Padalecki Criticizes The CW’s ‘Cheap Content’ Strategy After ‘Walker’ Cancellation
That's exactly what Nexstar is doing Jared. It's why they killed all the shows that made the CW so likeable. If it wasn't for Nexstar Walker would've had so many more seasons.

networks and streamers cancelling shows they *can't* afford is insane. they can't afford the shows they create, they underpay their writers, and yet they rake in profit and return it to shareholders:
Tumblr media
can someone please explain this shit? bc all i see is tptb cancelling beloved shows and crying poormouth then turning huge profits and caring more about money than the point of the business they're actually in:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they turn a profit by gutting their assets.

If I'm interpreting this bit and the whole article correctly, it sounds like Walker's future on the CW is less of a performance issue and more of a CBS issue
Which means either the CW will be forced to pay a higher price for it or CBS will look at other options for airing it.
Once again, we'll just have to wait and see.

The list they had of places to shop to: once cancelled, can a show go beyond that list? And have you heard any updates on whether the interest panned out or are we still in the dark? (If you just want to answer the first out front to avoid putting sources in an awkward spot, feel free to split the ask.)
So my source who said that Windy was done on CW before it was announced said that the reason was the writer's strike. Paramount+ had previously expressed interest, but TPTB at Windy can't formally shop it until CW officially canceled it. This is why I've been really annoyed at Nexstar dragging their feet, because if they had canceled some of these shows back when they first started talking about canceling them, these shows could have been shopped and maybe would have found other homes by now.
From my understanding, even if Paramount+ is interested, and I have heard that they are, the problem is due to the writer's strike, they have no idea when they will be able to film the series and that makes it hard (impossible?) for them to negotiate the contracts with actors because the strike could go on for months. They have to guarantee work, which they are unable to currently guarantee.
It will be incredibly hard for any of these new shows to earn a renewal on the CW, and if any of them are canceled, it is my understanding that it would be very very difficult for them to be picked up elsewhere, more so than usual. Since Paramount+ had previously expressed a lot of interest, and this show does make a lot of money, I do think it has a chance, but it sounds like that chance is slim.
What's crazy is that in any other year, the show would be renewed or be picked up. It's just that this year is really bad timing. Windy was my favorite show by far on the CW. It was the show most favored by TPTB in part because it was so artistic and creative, but even that wasn't enough to save them.

The Federal Communications Commission has determined that local TV giant Nexstar Media Group's takeover of WPIX-TV in New York in 2020 violated federal limits on station ownership.
In a ruling issued Thursday, the regulatory agency ordered Mission Broadcasting, Nexstar's partner in WPIX, to sell the station. Failing that, Nexstar could put the station under its umbrella and then shed other stations in its portfolio in order to remain under the ownership cap. The FCC also fined the company $1.2 million.
Nexstar responded by vowing to "vigorously" dispute the decision.
WPIX, which went on the air in 1948, has been a fixture in New York media and became an affiliate of The CW in 2006. Nexstar, the No. 1 owner of U.S. TV stations, acquired control of The CW in 2022. The company has operated WPIX since 2020 under a local marketing agreement with Mission. Such agreements, often described as "sidecar" deals, have come under scrutiny in recent years amid consolidation reshaping the local TV sector, with regulators expressing concern that the pacts can serve as workarounds to long-established ownership rules.
Nexstar appeared to engage in "an unauthorized transfer of control" and broke through the longtime cap of 39% of U.S. TV households reached by a single owner, the FCC said in its ruling.
In a statement, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook issued a statement saying the company was "extremely disappointed" by the FCC's decision, "and we intend to dispute it vigorously."
The regulatory agency, he continued, "has been misled by the often distracting noise in the media ecosphere and that it has completely misjudged the facts. The facts are that Nexstar has always complied with FCC regulations."
Nexstar's acquisition of WPIX, Sook said, and the local marketing agreement were approved by the FCC in 2020, when WPIX-TV was purchased by Mission. "Nexstar believes that joint operating, shared service, and local marketing agreements like those in which it is engaged are vitally important to maintain a competitive media marketplace and to enable broadcasters to continue investing in local news, investigative journalism, and other services that they uniquely provide to the communities in which they are located."
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel noted that companies are prohibited from owning or controlling broadcast stations that reach more than 39% of the national television audience.
"The record here reflects a situation where a company exceeds this threshold. Unless and until Congress changes this law, it is the responsibility of this agency to enforce it," she said in a statement.
Brendan Carr, one of two Republicans on the commission, issued a concurring statement. He said that "it is concerning to me that the FCC cites as evidence of control those features of the relationship that the FCC previously signed off on. We need to be careful that we do not undermine reasonable reliance on prior FCC decisions."
He said that he would "keep an open mind as the FCC reviews the record in response to this document. Part of that will require the FCC to ensure that any remedies the agency finds necessary are ones that are appropriate given the procedural posture of this enforcement action."

Looks like we know why Librarians was pulled now (and its not the smart thing you suggested about holding it so they had basically one anchor show in the spring):
https://tvline.com/news/tnt-drama-series-librarians-the-next-chapter-1235322458/
TNT Grabs Librarians Reboot From The CW as Part of Plan to Replenish Drama Slate
So basically they had one show that people were looking forward to that had an at least somewhat established fanbase (I never watched the og so I don't know how big the fandom is, but I know they're there), and they.... sold it.
I get needing an influx of cashflow but its sooo short sighted! If you continue to sell off, cancel, or just never air the shows that people are interested in just to get cash then yea, you have cash now, but when no one watches your network in the upcoming years because you have ruined it and cancelled or sold off all the shows people want? Then you're going to be in even more trouble because a network with no one watching is making less money than the CW was already struggling to make. They aren't "making the cw profitable" they are trying to get fast cash as they make the network completely unrecognizable to its loyal fans thereby destroying all good will they had.
Yes, to everything you said! I always side-eyed the "make the CW profitable by 2025" because it forces whoever's in charge to make the kinds of decisions that generate immediate cash for investors, but don't allow for an extended growth plan. Nexstar may be able to pay off investors in the short-term, but their long-term prospects are dwindling with every short-term decision they make.
(But yea, for TNT bringing the Librarians back home! I might even watch it now knowing that the CW won't get my views for ad revenue.)

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/the-cw-losses-q3-nexstar-earnings-political-ads-fall-1235640323/
People celebrating this aren’t reading the article. Their earnings are actually improving since, last quarter, they lost $78 million and now it’s down to $60 million. The network is actually getting closer and closer to being profitable/making money. Of course, whether they can actually make it there is yet to be seen.
A lot of people in fandom don't understand how CW was run.
The TV ad revenue is "down overall 23% for the July-September quarter", but people are looking at the $60 million and thinking that they are down $60m compared to before when, as you point out, that number is better than Q1 or Q2.
Part of the reason that ad revenue was down is that they aired some flops. Those flops were cheaper than the scripted shows, which is why they are reducing their losses. As you continue into the article:
Nexstar’s core ad sales were $391 million in Q3, a decrease of 2.3% from the comparable year-ago quarter. Political ad sales fell 85.3% to $19 million from $129 million last year, when midterm elections spiked that categories revenue.
Next year, they should be able to making a killing on political ad sales. In California, I had nothing to vote on this year.
Total TV ad sales were $410 million, down 23% year-over-year from $529 million.
So you can see that this drop is actually better than average.
It remains to be seen if they will actually be able to turn a profit, but they are closer to their goal than they were a year ago.

What do you think of this news? deadline*com/2023/05/cbs-stations-eight-drop-cw-go-independent-this-fall-1235357388/
Not surprising, other than it happened quicker than I expected. CW is going to be fine, they'll just pick up new affliates in those markets. Nexstar is the largest owner of local tv stations (199), with 155 of them affiliated with the four national broadcasters: CBS (49), Fox (42), NBC (35), and ABC (29).
