Radical Feminism and the Politics of Pregnancy and Birth
The distortions of the backlash against feminism include the mistaken notion that the Second Wave was essentialist and dedicated to notions of "female nature," that for us, biology was the issue, our bleeding, birthing, lactating women's bodies were the issue. And so our work and activism to redefine pregnancy and birth seem far too often to be viewed askance, as suspect somehow, embarrassing, just a bit too stark a reminder, in a postmodern "gender-as-performance" age, that it is we women—and only we— who are appointed to the important task of motherhood. "Don't remind us!" is the sentiment, as though the issue really is our bodies—just as male supremacy said it was—as opposed to what has been done to us because it is we who are the mothers.
The truth is, we are not and never were concerned with some theoretical "female nature" when it came to pregnancy and birth. Biology was never the issue for us. The issue was always male power and how it affected us. The issue was who would have control over the social and cultural context of childbirth, with the availability of abortion on one end of the continuum and the care of a toddler on the other end. The problem wasn't, and isn't, even "medicalization" per se, but the male supremacist monopoly over material resources and its power to name and define, to establish and enforce male ideas about pregnancy and childbirth and to oppose and silence our own ideas about it. We always understood that our oppression was socially, not biologically, ordained, an understanding we found exhilarating and liberating because it meant we did not need to struggle so much for control over our bodies as for control over the social options available to us and an equal voice in the societal institutions that defined those options.

I think the porn debate is really interesting. Obviously all forms of labour are unethical under capitalism, but I was just wondering what your views were on independently created "ethical"(lol) porn, especially porn featuring performers who are dykes irl and directed by other queer people, and pornography as a creative medium?
this is a really great ask and actually one ive been thinking about for a long time since i discovered on our backs (the first lesbian-run erotica magazine in the US) and the rift it created between its editors/photographers and other feminists who were against depictions of sexual violence, demeaning imagery, pornography. the interesting thing about on our backs is that even its title is an ironic reversal of another feminist publication at the time called off our backs, a feminist newsjournal that published pieces concerned with the liberation of women. it ran for nearly 40 decades, from 1970 to 2008, gaining a major subscriber population and even commissioning artists like alison bechdel (ive posted the art at the bottom).
the publishers of on our backs thought off our backs was prudish and regressive, while the publishers of off our backs thought on our backs was disruptive and harmful. with that said i dont think either group of women could have possibly imagined a world where pornography is so rampant, pervasive, and violent as it is today. i also think the world has a lot of room for dyke erotica that isnt made by or for men in any way shape or form, and theres a sore lack of material made to specifically and unapologetically capture lesbian sexuality. the fact that theres little to none of this type of “porn” to base an opinion on means i cant really comment and the feminist in me hesitates but the dyke in me says id like to see it tried. LOL. to be honest if we could bring back a magazine like on our backs i think that would be enough for me. as far as i know the only magazine doing something similar is rub magazine (which queen bratvampgf has actually worked with before … !) if you want to check it out but as ive talked about with her even it seems to have its problems with the way it edits its submissions, how it treats its models, etc. nothing is perfect unfortunately.
anyways if you wanted to carry on discussing the porn thing with CIVILITY AND RESPECT, there are a couple asks still sitting in my inbox i would have liked to have answered but i wont publicly, so feel free to dm me. Love and light to you

Pastor with Unification Church ties asks forgiveness from those ‘offended’ (2001)
Tumblr media
▲ Pictured: James Merritt, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention By Mark A. Wyatt, April 20, 2001
FRESNO, Calif. (BP)–A California pastor has asked for forgiveness for causing other Southern Baptists to be “offended or confused” by his involvement with an interfaith group sponsored by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church.
Wiley Drake, pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, released a written statement April 16 clarifying his involvement with the United Federation of Churches. Literature from the group describes the UFC as “a group of ministers and churches uniting together to create programs to empower church families and communities.”
One such program featured a “reconciliation ceremony” March 15 at a Los Angeles hotel. That event included a keynote address by Moon, founder and leader of the Unification Church.
“Under no circumstances does my affiliation with any religious organization or any religious leader endorse or give my approval of their beliefs,” Drake said in the statement he provided to the California Southern Baptist newsjournal.
In the statement, Drake acknowledged “my involvement with Rev. Moon of the Unification Church, certain Jewish leaders, Muslim, and Mormon leaders as well as leaders from other religions that are very different from my own.” He noted his participation in a “Congressional Pastors Prayer Conference” in September 2000 helped to promote such associations.
“In my duties to God, and to the Congress of the United States, I have met with and been associated with leaders from a wide religious background. I am a follower of Jesus and use the Holy Bible as my guide and authority,” Drake declared.
“Before, during and after this meeting in September of 2000, I have been working with men and women of all faiths and beliefs” to accomplish several purposes, Drake explained. The statement listed three purposes: restoring the family, rebuilding the community, and renewing the nation.
Baptist opposition to Drake’s involvement with the Unification Church-sponsored group began stirring in February, when his name appeared on a UFC letter inviting pastors to attend the March 15 “Interfaith Reconciliation Bridge-Crossing” event. Drake was named first on the list of “invitational committee” members under a heading that stated, “We Will Stand Together.”
Other names in the list included the imam (spiritual leader) of the Orange County Islamic Center, leaders from organizations including the American Leadership Conference and the True Family Values Ministry, and pastors of various churches including Baptist, Church of God in Christ, Methodist, Apostolic and Church of God.
“I received probably 30-35 phone calls or e-mails about it,” said Doyle Braden, Orange County Southern Baptist Association director of missions. Many of those contacts, including some from other states, expressed particular concern about Baptists openly uniting with non-Christian groups, Braden said.
At one point, Braden met with a group of Korean Baptist pastors from Orange County “who were very disturbed” by the appearance of Southern Baptist support for Moon, considered a cult leader by many evangelical Christians.
“It was very disruptive to several of our pastors and we just felt that he [Drake] needed to make some kind of a clarification statement,” Braden said.
Braden subsequently met twice with Drake and other Baptist pastors who voiced strong objections to Drake’s high-profile involvement with the UFC programs. As a result of those meetings, Drake agreed to clarify his position and drafted a statement that initially was circulated among Orange County Baptist pastors.
Drake said in the statement he has “asked that my name be removed from any publication emanating from Sun Myung Moon or the Unification Church in the future.”
The Buena Park pastor also asked forgiveness from those he had offended.
“Since my associations, meetings, or relationships have caused churches and some members, especially our Korean brothers, to be offended or confused, I ask that you please forgive me,” Drake wrote.
Braden told the California Southern Baptist Drake’s statement was well received by other Orange County Baptist leaders.
“We are pleased with the response that he has given because we have known that he does not in any way believe or endorse Moon [despite] the earlier appearance that he was in fact endorsing the position of Rev. Moon,” Braden said.

Learning to shoot  video
Over the past year, I’ve been learning how to shoot and edit video. I’ve been a text reporter for many years now, and have worked with brilliant photographers and designers who have all helped me develop a love of visual journalism. But this is the first time I've gone behind the lens myself.
Here are links to some of the video stories I’ve shot recently.
In case it’s useful for others, the equipment (all second-hand and acquired from Gumtree and eBay) I’ve bought includes:
Body: Canon C100 Mark I and optical viewfinder Zacuto C100 Z-Finder Pro Lenses: Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens (though planning to switch to a 24-105), Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens Mics: Rode NTG-2 Directional Mic and Sennheiser EW-100-ENG-G3-B Wireless Mic Tripods: Miller DS10 Solo DV Carbon Fibre Tripod System and Impact Light Stand, Black (6') Light: YONGNUO YN600 SERIES Pro LED Light (also bought a cheap reflector on eBay) Bags: CineBags CB-25B Revolution Backpack bag, Pelican 1510 Case and Crumpler Miner Upset bag (great for run-and-gun) Laptop: Refurbished 15.4-inch Macbook Pro 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with Retina display Editing software: Avid Media Composer Others: 10-metre XLR cable (for press conferences)
I also completed a five-day video production course and a Diploma in Editing course (one semester) at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). The courses were both well run and I recommend them.
youtube
So how have my experiences been shooting video? There’s been a lot learn in terms of technical skills, and every job I do allows me to figure out new challenges and get feedback from others. There’s also the physical stuff -- I’m used to carrying around a notebook, Zoom recorder and a heap of pens, but having to carry a ton of equipment that I have to be very gentle with at the same time has been a good test of my abilities to not hit people (kidding). My first flight with all the gear had a couple of hiccups, but I have a decent packing system now that seems to work pretty OK.
In terms of shooting, I’ve enjoyed it tremendously. I love the C100. It shoots beautiful footage, is good in low light and weight and size-wise, it’s pretty perfect for me. The lenses have also been great, though as mentioned above, I’m hoping to switch to a EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens shortly as I have a gap in my shooting range.
youtube
There’s no doubt been loads of challenges, particularly with news footage when you sometimes only have one chance to capture something crucial (eg when I shot the first gay wedding in Australia in January after same-sex marriage laws were passed). In this regard, I’ve been very fortunate to get to work with a great team of photographers in AFP’s Sydney office, who are superb at what they do and always willing to help me with tips and encouragement. Ditto for our regional video desk!
To conclude, I’ve really enjoyed the technical challenges that have come with shooting video, and my admiration for VJs is growing by the day. Text is still a big love of mine, but I’ve found that the opportunity to shoot video has opened up journalism and storytelling in many more ways for me. It makes covering stories, particularly features, very exciting. I can only hope to keep learning over the next few years and decades.

YSK that before 1980 evangelical anti-abortion fever really didn't exist, and that it was in fact ginned up by power hungry evangelical leaders and craven GOP politicians. Why you should know: I don't really need to say, do I? via /r/atheism
YSK that before 1980 evangelical anti-abortion fever really didn't exist, and that it was in fact ginned up by power hungry evangelical leaders and craven GOP politicians. Why you should know: I don't really need to say, do I?
The evangelical zealots have obfuscated the whole abortion question and tilted the playing field. And most people don't realize that being pro-choice means you have to run uphill both ways.
No one can reasonably deny that a human fetus is human, though they have made that one of their central straw men. No one can reasonably say that a human fetus isn't alive, though that too is one of their strawmen. Another thing that no one can reasonably say is that a fetus is a person. The issue has never been whether a fetus is alive in the simplest meaning of "alive," nor whether it is human. It has always been about whether the fetus is a person.
In his article The Actual “Pro-Life” Conspiracy That Handed America to the Tea Party & Far Religious Right (An Insider’s Perspective) Frank Schaeffer wrote:
In 1968, Christianity Today published a special issue on contraception and abortion, encapsulating the consensus among evangelical thinkers at the time. In the leading article, professor Bruce Waltke, of the famously conservative Dallas Theological Seminary, explained the Bible plainly teaches that life [as a person] begins at birth:
“God does not regard the fetus as a soul, no matter how far gestation has progressed. The Law plainly exacts: ‘If a man kills any [person] he will be put to death’ (Lev. 24:17). But according to Exodus 21:22–24, the destruction of the fetus is not a capital offense… Clearly, then, in contrast to the mother, the fetus is not reckoned as a soul.” This is consistent with Genesis 2:7 which says "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Whether the dust was alive before man was alive before that is beside the point - man was not a living soul.
In 1979 the Southern Baptist Convention joined in with other denominations on full page (newspaper ads affirming the right to abortion.
According to a 1991 Ph.D. dissertation by Paul Sadler at Baylor University, between 1965-68, abortion was referenced at least 85 times in popular magazines and scholarly journals, but no Baptist state paper mentioned abortion and no Baptist body took action related to the subject. In 1970, a poll conducted by the Baptist Sunday School Board found that 70 percent of Southern Baptist pastors supported abortion to protect the mental or physical health of the mother, 64 percent supported abortion in cases of fetal deformity and 71 percent in cases of rape.
In 1973, a poll conducted by the Baptist Standard newsjournal found that 90 percent of Texas Baptists believed their state’s abortion laws were too restrictive.
A 1971 SBC resolution on abortion stated that “society has a responsibility to affirm through the laws of the state a high view of the sanctity of human life, including fetal life,” but the resolution added, “We call upon Southern Baptists to work for legislation that will allow the possibility of abortion under such conditions as rape, incest, clear evidence of fetal deformity, and carefully ascertained evidence of the likelihood of damage to the emotional, mental, and physical health of the mother.”
After Roe, a Baptist Press analysis article written by then-Washington bureau chief Barry Garrett declared that the court had “advanced the cause of religious liberty, human equality and justice.” Norma McCorvey, the unnamed plaintiff in Roe v. Wade who later became a pro-life activist, made her first public statement after the ruling to BP, revealing her true identity. One of McCorvey’s attorneys, Linda Coffee, was a Southern Baptist and also granted BP an interview.
“It’s great to know that other women will not have to go through what I did,” McCorvey told BP in 1973, commenting on her experience of giving birth and placing her child up for adoption. “I’m glad the court decided that women, in consultation with a doctor, can control their own bodies.”
A 1981 pamphlet published by the Christian Life Commission, (precursor organization to the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention), spoke of “Christian concern for the value of the defenseless fetus” but went on to argue, “It is questionable that Christian love and justice would be served by extremely restrictive laws which do not give conscientious people with proper medical advice the opportunity to choose when they are faced with very grave moral dilemmas related to abortion.”
Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor Paul Simmons argued that “God is pro-choice,” and some prominent Baptist leaders were among early supporters of the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights.
So how did they become rabid forced birthers? Frank Schaeeffer wrote "The GOP’s shift from a normal political party to a crusading party driven by moralistic religion was a thought-out conspiracy. I know. I was there." He might be taking a bit too much credit or blame, but he was definitely a major player in transforming the GOP from a political party into a church. He was a first hand witness to the unholy alliance of power hungry evangelicals and craven GOP politicians. I can't find a couple posts / articles in which he gives more of the history, but they are out there.
