Worst episode of mlp?

I already answered this question! To summarize, the episodes that try to deal with racism are objectively the worst, and “Newbie Dash” was always my least favorite of the episodes that aren’t about racism.

Since writing that post, I started rewatching MLP, but I’ve kind of inadvertently fallen out of it and need to get back into it. I was early in Season 5 last time I watched an episode. Along with “Over A Barrel,” other episodes that were shittily executed include (but are not limited to) “Bridle Gossip” and “She’s All Yak.” Especially the latter. Yona was so severely let down by the adults in her life and I hate that it was treated as just another friendship lesson. Honestly I like to headcanon that these three episodes just Did Not Happen, and that the Mane 6 met Zecora / Yona and Sandbar fell in love in different, better circumstances.

And I still dislike the newbie dash episode.

Whatever message (then consequence) they were trying to pull does not work if you know of Rainbow Dash's past or marking. Let alone their relishing & mockery to her. Almost as bleh like that episode with the ponies and buffaloes (I think it was the over a barrel and I'm not gonna even go there tho).

Ugh that when character(s) throws away who they are or want or been through and submit to nonsense of the other(s) is wack.

You vs. We

i rewatched the first shadow yesterday and i think there’s a hentty/byler/mlvn parallel worth noting. (spoilers for TFS ahead⚠️)

when henry is taken by brenner for the first time and brenner asks him to make contact with the mind flayer, patty tries to reach out to him so he lets her into his mind in the void. when she sees him strapped down in the lab, she runs to his side, holds his hand and talks to him. it looks exactly like the way mike’s monologue is framed in s4. and that’s where the similarities end.

patty holds the unconscious henry’s hand, but in the void, she’s still looking at henry when she talks and henry’s looking back at her. she says something along the lines of “if you leave, we can run away and find my mother. we can fight the monster together, you and me.”

and this made me realise the glaring difference between how mike talks to el and how mike talks to will. the entirety of his monologue is “you can do this,” and “you can do that, el!” meanwhile at the end of s4, when will says “we have to kill him,” mike says “and we will. we will.”

that’s not the only time mike uses “we” or “us” when he talks to will about a fight against the enemy. here are some more examples:

in his monologue to el, you is el, we is mike, dustin, and lucas.

mike sees el as the other. as someone he cannot imagine as his equal, and it reflects in the way he talks to her. this doesn’t surprise me considering it is exactly what he tells will in the van. but mike and will have had no issues seeing each other as equals. even after mike saw will possessed and powerful. and even though will considers mike the leader of the party, he doesn’t think mike is above him. they stand on equal grounds in their relationship.

I am a person who loves the beginning of HC seasons because of the intermingling and I’ve experienced like, 4 seasons ending now? And HC9 ending still affected me more than any other season ending. Like logically I knew it was going to end and logically I knew now would be the best time and logically I knew they would have to announce it sometime, but it still blew me out of the water for some reason 🤡 I thought we were going to get more Decked Out but I guess it wasn’t enough to expand it past the holiday season.

Or maybe it’s how Ren shouldn’t make announcements on behalf of the server again in the most dramatic way because he scared his chat to death before he announced “Season Ten was coming to an end” and we were like ????!?!?!? until Impulse stepped up and gave us an actual rundown.

What are some of your least favorite episodes of mlp?

I’ll preface this by saying I haven’t regularly watched MLP since partway through Season 6, and it’s been awhile since I’ve done a good binge watch. I do plan on it soon though so I’ll have a better answer after that.

For now, though, my least favorite episode by far is Newbie Dash. It was the first episode I ever actively disliked, even when there were plenty of other episodes that the fandom didn’t like. It just felt insulting. Rainbow Dash had been building up to being a Wonderbolt for multiple seasons and she had finally made it! Her biggest dream was accomplished! But it was completely wasted. From that first scene with her looking into the mirror at her uniform, I felt it was pretty anticlimatic, and then it got worse as her job started actively sucking. I do think it’s important to show that even your dream job can be challenging and imperfect, but they showed that a lot better with Rarity in Canterlot Boutique. Sassy was a pain in the butt for much of the episode, but she had a more solid “redemption” than the Wonderbolts in Newbie Dash, and nowhere did I get the sense that Rarity had wasted her time and energy working towards that goal. For Rainbow Dash it wasn’t even worth it to be a Wonderbolt. Even Twilight’s ascension to princesshood, though some have argued is a bit rushed, was better handled than this. Like why?

Like many people I know, I hate the weird colonial message of Over A Barrel. It’s insensitive, inaccurate, and I’m not sure why the writers thought it was a good idea. The only reason why I didn’t mention it first was because I didn’t dislike it during my first watch as an uneducated ~10 year old, I dislike it now that I’m an adult who knows better. There was never a time I even remotely liked Newbie Dash, though.

I may answer this question again with new opinions once I’ve done a full rewatch of the show.
