A shy penguin wins New Zealand’s bird election after campaign filled with memes and tattoos
By CHARLOTTE GRAHAM-McLAY; Updated 11:33 PM EDT, September 15, 2024

A hoiho or yellow-eyed penguin pictured on April 2, 2023, has won New Zealand's annual Bird of the Year vote, Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, after a fierce contest absent the foreign interference and controversies that have upset the country's avian elections before. (Hayden Parsons via AP)
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — It’s noisy, smelly, shy — and New Zealand’s bird of the year.
The hoiho, or yellow-eyed penguin, won the country’s fiercely fought avian election on Monday, offering hope to supporters of the endangered bird that recognition from its victory might prompt a revival of the species.
It followed a campaign for the annual Bird of the Year vote that was absent the foreign interference scandals and cheating controversies of past polls. Instead, campaigners in the long-running contest sought votes in the usual ways — launching meme wars, seeking celebrity endorsements and even getting tattoos to prove their loyalty.
More than 50,000 people voted in the poll, 300,000 fewer than last year, when British late night host John Oliver drove a humorous campaign for the pūteketeke -- a “deeply weird bird” which eats and vomits its own feathers – securing a landslide win.
Tumblr media

This year, the number of votes cast represented 10% of the population of New Zealand — a country where nature is never far away and where a love of native birds is instilled in citizens from childhood.
“Birds are our heart and soul,” said Emma Rawson, who campaigned for the fourth-placed ruru, a small brown owl with a melancholic call. New Zealand’s only native mammals are bats and marine species, putting the spotlight on its birds, which are beloved — and often rare.
This year’s victor, the hoiho — its name means “noise shouter” in the Māori language — is a shy bird thought to be the world’s rarest penguin. Only found on New Zealand’s South and Chatham islands — and on subantarctic islands south of the country — numbers have dropped perilously by 78% in the past 15 years.
“This spotlight couldn’t have come at a better time. This iconic penguin is disappearing from mainland Aotearoa before our eyes,” Nicola Toki, chief executive of Forest & Bird — the organization that runs the poll — said in a press release, using the Māori name for New Zealand. Despite intensive conservation efforts on land, she said, the birds drown in nets and sea and can’t find enough food.
“The campaign has raised awareness, but what we really hope is that it brings tangible support,” said Charlie Buchan, campaign manager for the hoiho. But while the bird is struggling, it attracted a star billing in the poll: celebrity endorsements flew in from English zoologist Jane Goodall, host of the Amazing Race Phil Keoghan, and two former New Zealand prime ministers.
Aspiring bird campaign managers — this year ranging from power companies to high school students — submit applications to Forest & Bird for the posts. The hoiho bid was run by a collective of wildlife groups, a museum, a brewery and a rugby team in the city of Dunedin, where the bird is found on mainland New Zealand, making it the highest-powered campaign of the 2024 vote.
“I do feel like we were the scrappy underdog,” said Emily Bull, a spokesperson for the runner-up campaign, for the karure — a small, “goth” black robin only found on New Zealand’s Chatham Island.
Tumblr media

The karure’s bid was directed by the students’ association at Victoria University of Wellington, prompting a fierce skirmish on the college campus when the student magazine staged an opposing campaign for the kororā, or little blue penguin.
The rivalry provoked a meme war and students in bird costumes. Several people got tattoos. When the magazine’s campaign secured endorsements of the city council and local zoo, Bull despaired for the black robin’s bid.
But the karure — which has performed a real-life comeback since the 1980s, with conservation efforts increasing the species from five birds to 250 — took second place overall.
This weekend as Rawson wrapped up her campaign for the ruru, she took her efforts directly to the people, courting votes at a local dog park. The veteran campaign manager who has directed the bids for other birds in past years was rewarded by the ruru placing fourth in the poll, her best ever result.
“I have not been in human political campaigning before,” said Rawson, who is drawn to the competition because of the funds and awareness it generates. The campaign struck a more sedate tone this year, she added.
“There’s been no international interference, even though that was actually a lot of fun,” she said, referring to Oliver’s high-profile campaign.
It was not the only controversy the election has seen. While anyone in the world can vote, Forest & Bird now requires electors to verify their ballots after foreign interference plagued the contest before. In 2018, Australian pranksters cast hundreds of fraudulent votes in favor of the shag.
The following year, Forest & Bird was forced to clarify that a flurry of votes from Russia appeared to be from legitimate bird-lovers.
While campaigns are fiercely competitive, managers described tactics more akin to pro wrestling — in which fights are scripted — than divisive political contests.
“Sometimes people want to make posts that are kind of like beefy with you and they’ll always message you and be like, hey, is it okay if I post this?” Bull said. “There is a really sweet community. It’s really wholesome.”

Maui Brewing Company raises $1.5 million for Maui wildfire relief via their Kōkua Project.
image courtesy Maui Brewing Company Press Release Kihei, Hawaii … In response to the wildfire tragedies across the island of Maui, Maui Brewing Company spearheaded the Kōkua Project, a collaborative beer effort inspired by Sierra Nevada’s Resilience project of 2018 to raise money for those in need. Translated as “extending help to others” in the Hawaiian language, the Kōkua Project was touted as “one beer, brewed by many, to support the people of Maui”. Over 700 breweries across the United States and internationally participated in the project which began in late August to raise funds for the people of Maui. While Maui Brewing Company coordinated the efforts and provided the recipe for their suggested brew, brewing material partners jumped in with support by donating the yeast, hops, malts, and more to breweries that reached out for supplies. Ongoing email marketing kept brewing participants up-to-date on recipes, participating vendors, foundation information, events, marketing assets and logos, tap handles, and merchandising kits “From New Zealand to Japan and every US state in between, the brewing community has come together in a powerful and humbling way to support the people of Maui,” said Maui Brewing Company Founder and CEO, Garrett Marrero. “As one beer, brewed by many, Kōkua supports our Maui ‘Ohana who have been affected by the tragic wildfires. We are grateful to every brewery who has participated this year.” Maui Brewing partnered with Global Empowerment Mission to facilitate the fiscal responsibilities for the Maui Brewing Company Fire Fund. While participating breweries were encouraged to send their donations to GEM, some breweries opted to donate to Hawaii Community Foundation, Makai Foundation, or other legitimate non-profit organizations including Legacy of Aloha. Legacy of Aloha benefits Maui Brewing and TS Restaurants teammates that have been displaced and lost their belongings and livelihoods. The two restaurant groups partnered for the largest impact. Across these collaborative efforts, the beer community has raised $3M for Maui’s relief efforts with $1.5M pledged through the Kōkua Project. President and CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Restaurants, Chris Thibaut sent the update, "We're stoked to share that we've hit the $1.77M mark through the Legacy of Aloha program! The amount of support and aloha our community has shown these past few months has been truly amazing. Huge Mahalo for making a real difference in the lives of our Maui 'Ohana!" The financials provided by Legacy of Aloha did not only include brewery contributions from the Kōkua Project. The Maui Brewing Company team led by Garrett Marrero have been providing ongoing support to Maui, also facilitating supply missions, collecting vital items for the survivors, and delivering emergency drinking water to communities affected by the wildfires. As a result earlier this month, the brewing trade publication Brewbound announced their Best of 2023 Award Winners. Marrero was presented with the Person of the Year Award for “exemplifying the spirit of the craft brewing industry”. Beer lovers and those looking to support Maui’s relief efforts can donate directly to the Maui Brewing Company Fire Fund online HERE. Awesome Sauce: Bun Length Hot Dog Water Seltzer (Martin House) "The 5.2% ABV hard seltzer, called Awesome Sauce: Bun Length, was created with 52 pounds of water previously used to boil frankfurters... Martin House Brewing Company will unveil its questionable creation at Glizzy Fest, a five-hour "Celebration of Hotdogs" that will take place at the brewery on July 16."
Moa Burger Pringles (Pringles) "Pringles® has plucked a new flavor from the far reaches of the gaming world, answering a question pondered by many Halo fans: what would a "Moa Burger" taste like?
For those not fluent in the video game Halo's lore, Moa are large, flightless bird-like creatures with two legs, wings, scales from the neck up, and a lizard-like head – similar to the extinct bird from New Zealand of the same name."
So they made a new flavor out of a fictional burger based on an extinct bird.

ZK-CIE [Convair CV-440/580] seen at Air Center One (2020).
New to Union Oil, CA in 1957, and registered as N98G, it was built as a Convair CV-440-83 c/n 399. It was sold to Gulf Oil Corp a month after delivery and was rebuilt to a CV-580 in 1961.
After being re-registered three times (N98GL, N57RD, N565EA), it ended up in Alaska working for ERA Aviation Inc by 1967.
It was wfu in 2005 and sold to Air Chathams and flown direct to New Zealand. It was wet-leased to Peau Vavaʻu, Tonga, for a year in 2006. It was then subsequently wet-leased to Air Fiji [NB: seemingly not to be confused with Air Pacific, now Fiji Airways] in 2007. It then spent time with Chathams Pacific [Air Chathams' Pacific Island operations] and Real Tonga Airlines during the 2010-14 period.
It then worked dutifully back in New Zealand until 2022 when it was scrapped and its nose-section purchased by the recently defunct Epic Brewery, Onehunga.
Air Chathams was the last operator in the world to retire the Convair and did so mostly due to new noise regulations imposed by the CAA. This is exactly how the Tasman Cargo Airlines (trading as DHL) 727F was retired a decade earlier.

The brewer William McEwan was born in July 16th 1827 in Alloa.
After pursuing careers as a commercial clerk and bookmaker, he joined his uncles' brewery in Edinburgh and received the technical and management training required to establish his own brewery in 1856.
His Fountain Brewery at Fountainbridge started small, but McEwan's ambition, supported by funding from his mother and uncle, helped it to achieve success with the local market: by the turn of the century, the brewery had 90% of sales in north-eastern England. He also expanded into international trade, making significant exports to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India.
In 1886, he became the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh Central, which he served until 1900.
McEwan gave significant donations to the city of Edinburgh, including £115,000 to build the McEwan Hall as a graduation hall for the University of Edinburgh, as seen in the pics. McEwan's plaque is on the exterior wall of the McEwan Hall, next to the main entrance.

New York breweries honored at World Beer Cup
Tumblr media
World Beer Cup awards hang on a wall with other beer medals at Chuckanut Brewery in Bellingham, Washington in 2019 (Photo: Chris O'Leary)
The World Beer Cup, a professionally-judged competition of beers from around the world that drew more than 10,000 entries from 51 countries this year, had three winners from New York State. The renown awards were announced last week in Nashville, Tennessee as part of the Craft Brewers Conference. This is the first time the competition has been held in back-to-back years, as it became an annual event beginning last year after previously being held bi-annually.
New York’s breweries took home one gold and two silver awards. The gold went to ABInBev-owned Blue Point Brewing in Patchogue, which won the top award in the Australian-Style Pale Ale category for Feel Good. At press time, the beer is still available in crowlers at their taproom. This is Blue Point’s fifth World Beer Cup award and their first since 2014. Auburn’s Prison City Brewing won silver for their foeder-fermented Something Something Something Dark Sour aged on sweet and tart cherries. The beer competed in the Fruited Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer category. This is the first World Beer Cup win for the celebrated Central New York brewer. And in the Contemporary American-Style Lager category, Upward Brewing Co. in Livingston Manor won silver for their Base Camp Lagerbier. It’s the first win for the Catskills Region brewery at World Beer Cup, but not the first time this particular beer has been lauded by judges — Base Camp won gold in 2021 in the New York State Beer Competition.
On a personal note, I did some number crunching, and of the 307 beers given awards at this year’s World Beer Cup, I have visited the breweries where 156 of them were made. That’s just over half. Coincidentally, the two winning breweries in Australia and New Zealand, Bucketty’s near Sydney and Garage Project in Wellington respectively, were stops on my overseas trip last month.
Next year’s World Beer Cup awards will be held in April in Las Vegas.

I’m at the brewery waiting for my friend, so I’m back.
How many languages do you speak?
What are your favourite drinks?
STINA you are back!!! 💜 :smooshes you in a hug::
To answer your questions, I grew up speaking both Spanish and English, and am fluent in both. Sometimes I say that my first language is Spanglish because my natural state is to just mix them both together. 😂 I also speak some Arabic because I used to work with refugees from the Middle East, but I have forgotten a lot of it, which makes me sad. Oh also some Hebrew, but very little.
Drinks! I love thm! I am right now reconsidering this port because it was very sweet and deceived me, but it was SO good. I also love tequila and mezcal and will drink them with fruit juice or in a margarita form. I am also just deeply basic and will default to a gin and tonic in any situation where I need to pretend to be an adult with a favorite drink order. Oh! Also once in New Zealand I had a gin flip and it changed my life. it was so good. What are YOUR favorite drinks?
(I tried for like five minutes to find the emoji blowing a kiss but I have failed; pretend there is an emoji blowing a kiss here) xoxoxo

This plate of food in front of your eyes is from a restaurant in Dunedin called Speights, which also has a brewery as well. In this meal, i got a slack of ribs, with a side of chips (fries). This meal was delicious, and most meals I have had in New Zealand have been magnificent. Everything I have is better than most meals I have had back in the states, except for my mothers cooking. The New Zealand cuisine is one of my fan favorites so far throughout this trip. Even though this trip is coming to an end in the next couple of days, I am sure going to miss this cuisine very much, and hopefully a popular pizza chain called Sal’s makes it to the states one day, Dave Portnoy would be astounded when he tries this pizza. Successful Implementations of Solar Water Heaters in the Industrial Sector
Industries around the world are increasingly turning to solar water heaters to meet their energy needs in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. The benefits of adopting solar water heating technology extend beyond reducing energy bills; they also contribute to environmental stewardship and compliance with regulations. This blog highlights some successful implementations of solar water heaters in the industrial sector, showcasing how different industries have effectively integrated this technology into their operations.
Tumblr media
1. Food and Beverage Industry: Brewing with the Sun
A leading brewery in Germany successfully implemented solar water heaters to meet a significant portion of its hot water needs. The brewery installed a solar thermal system with large flat-plate collectors on its rooftop, which pre-heats water used in the brewing process. By integrating solar heating into their operations, the brewery reduced its reliance on natural gas, cut its energy costs by 30%, and decreased its carbon emissions by 25%. This move not only enhanced the brewery's sustainability credentials but also resonated well with eco-conscious consumers.
2. Textile Industry: Solar Solutions for Dyeing Processes
A textile manufacturer in India faced high energy costs associated with heating water for dyeing fabrics. The company decided to invest in a solar water heating system with evacuated tube collectors, which are highly efficient in converting solar energy into heat. The system was designed to provide hot water at temperatures required for the dyeing process. After implementation, the manufacturer saw a reduction in energy costs by 40% and a return on investment (ROI) within three years. The solar system also contributed to a cleaner production process, aligning with the company's environmental goals.
3. Chemical Industry: Reducing Energy Intensity with Solar Heating
In Spain, a chemical processing plant implemented a solar water heating system to reduce the energy intensity of its operations. The plant required large amounts of hot water for various chemical reactions and cleaning processes. By installing a solar thermal system with advanced tracking collectors that follow the sun’s movement, the plant was able to maximize energy capture. The system provided 60% of the plant’s hot water needs, resulting in significant energy savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 35%.
4. Dairy Industry: Sustainable Milk Processing
A dairy processing facility in New Zealand incorporated solar water heaters into its milk pasteurization process. The facility installed solar thermal panels on its rooftops, which are used to pre-heat water before it enters the pasteurization units. This approach reduced the facility’s dependency on conventional energy sources, cutting energy costs by 20% and lowering the overall carbon footprint. The use of solar energy in the dairy process also helped the facility gain recognition for its sustainable practices, boosting its market competitiveness.
5. Hospitality Industry: Solar Water Heating for Laundry Services
A large hotel chain in the United States adopted solar water heating systems to support its laundry operations, which required vast amounts of hot water. By installing solar collectors on the rooftops of its hotels, the chain was able to generate sufficient hot water for laundry services, reducing energy consumption by 50%. This implementation not only resulted in substantial cost savings but also positioned the hotel chain as a leader in sustainable hospitality, attracting eco-conscious guests.
6. Pharmaceutical Industry: Green Energy for Sterilization Processes
A pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Italy needed a reliable and energy-efficient method to generate hot water for sterilization and cleaning. Firestone Walker Brewing releases the "crushable" Firestone XPA. The first in a seasonal series for 2024.
Press Release Paso Robles, CA: Firestone Walker today unveiled its first of three seasonal offerings slated for 2024—the all-new Firestone XPA, a next-generation extra pale ale brewed with Southern Hemisphere hops and California style, available now in all Firestone Walker markets. Find it with the FW Beer Finder.  “XPA is the number one craft beer style in Australia and it’s something we’re excited to champion it here in the U.S.," said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. "The appeal of XPAs is obvious--they offer everything you love in a good pale ale at a crushable ABV. We fell in love with the style during our travels to hop farms across Australia and New Zealand and we were inspired to make our own." Firestone XPA (5% ABV) is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in can (12-oz six packs) and limited  draft formats for the duration of winter and through the spring season into June. An early batch of Firestone XPA earned a Bronze Medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival in the International Pale Ale category. Crisp, Hoppy & Crushable Firestone XPA is built around New Zealand’s Nelson hop with its grapefruit and tropical Sauvignon Blanc qualities, all backed up with a dollop of classic Mosaic hops. The resulting beer offers a trifecta of drinkability: crisp, hoppy and crushable.  Firestone XPA also taps into Firestone Walker’s roots as a heritage brewer of California pale ales.  “Creating this beer brought a lot of joy to our production team, there was definitely some pent-up enthusiasm for pale ale brewing,” Brynildson said. “We went all in to fine-tune several test batches and nail what we were after with this beer.” He added, “We wanted to lead with the punchy tropical qualities of the Nelson hop, and we found that adding just the right amount of Mosaic makes the fruit flavors all the more lush and expansive.”  “XPA is the predominant beer style in Australia for a reason,” said Firestone Walker Brand Director Hannah Barnett. “I think it has the potential to take the U.S. by storm at some point, or at the very least become a fixture in the American pale ale landscape.
