Some Thoughts and Theories on the NXX Drug [CHAPTER 13 SPOILER]
The new Main-Story 13 has definitely had me scrambling on a whiteboard like a madman. Attached below is an actual picture of me rn:
I'M GOING INSANE.
But yes back to the topic at hand. The recent chapter has led me to speculate a lot of things I must exert that all of this is within the realm of HEADCANON. But the information that has got me thinking A LOT is about how:
The NXX circulation has run for 10 YEARS. AT LEAST. The incident of the Seahorse Association involved leaders getting drugged by the NXX drug, causing them to hallucinate and kill themselves. And who took over that case? THE NSB??? ISN'T THAT A BIT SUSPICIOUS.
That said. I think the NXX drug has been circulating for much longer than that. I'll be touching upon about what this means to Luke and Rosa, The NSB's involvement and PAX's a little bit less than savory past. So let's get started:
Here's what we know about the NXX Drug so far, according to the wiki:
The NXX drug stems from FloraX, a bacterium that originated from sea-faring that caused an epidemic in Stellis during 1930. The bacterium caused systemic failures within the human body. However, perhaps through some scientific breakthrough, it was discovered that it also contains gene-restoring attributes as well.
In 2005, Pax Pharmaceutical collaborated with Crimson Biotech to develop a new gene-restoring drug, presumably the NXX. However, it was shut down by the government when alarming side effects of the drug emerged. All possession of the NXX drug within PAX and Crimson were destroyed. Or so it seems.
The potential of an all-cure gene restorative drug is incredibly insane. Being the one to successfully tap into the generative properties of FloraX would make you an extremely powerful person. The possibility of achieving the prowess of a drug like this would surely cause a technological race between multiple parties, including PAX and Crimson, Heirson... etc etc. You get what I mean.
Now what does this mean for the rest of the team?
Let me remind everyone that the NXX Investigation Team is an un-official investigation funded by PAX. This means that Giann had motives and stakes at hand in the investigation of the drug. To make up for past mistakes of PAX? To avoid any more casualties that PAX has unknowingly started? In any case, while perhaps it started off with good intentions, it doesn't change the fact that PAX held some responsibility in developing the drug. I also think this means that Austin know a little bit more than he lets on.
Let me try to put everything in a timeline:
2005 - This is the year that the NXX drug started its development. Coincidentally, Luke and Rosa were born within the same year. I have a headcanon that Luke and Rosa's parent are involved with the development of this drug, perhaps as researchers.
2009 - NXX has presumably reached 4 years of its development if it was not shut down yet. Marius was born, and it is likely Carerina passed away within this year as well.
??? - NXX Research is shut down. PAX and Crimson has likely broken ties at this point. While PAX probably wants to wash their hands off it, I can imagine Crimson having other plans. The NXX drug continues to be developed in secret.
??? - Luke's Parents passes away. Is this a coincident? Or was this planned. Luke's get taken into Rosa's family. I could imagine this being done as a way to protect Luke.
2020 - Seahorse Association Incident, NSB takes over the case.
2022 - Luke leaves for the capital and gets involved in a "transnational case".' He gets recruited into a "secret project". This is a cover story for his entry to the NSB.
??? - Giann, Neil, and Vyn formed the NXX Investigation Team
2029-2030??? - During an NSB mission, Luke and his team is gravely injured by a toxic gas attack. During treatment, they were contaminated by an unknown drug (NXX). Luke is the sole survivor.
2029-Present Day- Artem joins the team. Neil goes missing shortly after, followed by Giann. Marius, Rosa, and Luke join subsequently.
That said here are my theories and headcanons. :
Considering the possibilities that this drug can do, a lot of parties would be interested in getting their hands and developing the drug. NSB included. It wouldn't be so strange if they wanted it for themselves to more effectively cure their agents or even create some super-soldiers out of it.
I don't think Luke getting into the NSB is an accident. Neither is Luke's parents' death nor was the incident that caused him the infection and the illness. Tears of Themis really likes making parallels between the boys and the chapters their featured in. In Main Story Episode 3, Jasmine Kenders was murdered for being a whistle-blower, this could have happened to Luke's parents as well if they whistle-blowed during their time as researchers of the NXX drug. I feel that the NSB has had their eyes on Luke for the longest time. Luke is their most competent agent, perhaps they wanted to see how much the drug would affect someone with his physicality.
Speaking of parallels, the parallels in this chapter... oh man... Hank Barnes and Luna Barnes losing their parents at a young age. Luna Barnes taking a "miracle" drug, thinking she's actually recovering only for her condition to succumb... HMM, DOESN'T THAT SOUND REALLY FAMILIAR... LUKE, WHY CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING. Syringes that killed the three victims, just like the ones Luna Barnes were take. YOU KNOW WHO ELSE IS TAKING SYRINGES.
PAX is not completely innocent I think. They definitely have some motives in wanting to get to the root of the NXX drug trade, whether it is to wash their hands clean or remedy the past. This is definitely a headcanon, but what if Carerina was given the NXX to let her live a little longer before she died... This would definitely increase the stakes and provide ulterior motives for both Giann and Marius. Austin... I'm looking at you.
We don't know much about Rosa's parents. But they've been missing and out of sight. Perhaps it's just Main Protagonist Things(TM) but I think it's very suspicious.
Honestly, I feel like I'm just rambling at this point. But I feel like... someone should chart out all the chapters that have happened into a board and start threading things together. There's so much stuff I don't remember. I need to lie down.

Elon Musk understands Eastern Europe about as much as he understands how to run a social media company.
Elon's clueless actions may have prolonged the war in Ukraine.
Elon Musk ordered his Starlink satellite communications network to be turned off near the Crimean coast last year to hobble a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian warships, according to a new biography. CNN quoted an excerpt from the biography Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson, which described how armed submarine drones were approaching their targets when they “lost connectivity and washed ashore harmlessly”. The biography, due out on Tuesday, alleges Musk ordered Starlink engineers to turn off service in the area of the attack because of his concern that Vladimir Putin would respond with nuclear weapons to a Ukrainian attack on Russian-occupied Crimea. He is reported to have said that Ukraine was “going too far” in threatening to inflict a “strategic defeat” on the Kremlin. Musk’s threats to withdraw Starlink communications at various stages of the conflict have been previously reported, but this is the first time it has been alleged he cut off Ukrainian forces in the middle of a specific operation.
The 2020s are not even half over but Musk is already a top contender for Putz of the Decade.
At the time of the submarine drone attack, according to the extract reported by CNN, Mykhailo Fedorov, one of Ukraine’s deputy prime ministers, pleaded with Musk to restore Starlink communications. “I just want you – the person who is changing the world through technology – to know this,” Fedorov reportedly told Musk. According to Isaacson’s account, Musk refused, saying Ukraine was “now going too far and inviting strategic defeat”. Musk has in the past echoed Russian talking points on Twitter, suggesting that some parts of eastern Ukraine be handed to Russia to reflect “the will of the people”.
Musk is more worried about future business deals with Russia than he is about Putin committing genocide in Ukraine.
The only way to end the war is for Russia to be defeated. The shit-for-brains tankies, Putin marionettes, and foreign policy illiterates push "negotiations" the way Neville Chamberlain pushed negotiations with Hitler over Czechoslovakia in 1938. Hitler kept his part of the Munich agreement for less than six months; and then Hitler invaded Poland less than a year after Munich.
"Peace in our time" should not be dependent on the whims of Putin who has already openly violated international agreements, signed by Russia, regarding Ukraine's security. Bothsiderism is a safe space for idiots.
Playing footsie with imperialistic dictators by caving to them only makes them more voracious.
Dilettante meddlers like Musk, who grew up as a privileged and insulated white boy in apartheid South Africa, should keep their lame asses out of Eastern European affairs. People in the West are usually underinformed about Eastern European history and culture and Elon Musk is worse than most.

whenever i see 2020s-style '2000s' VHS tape aesthetics i feel like i'm not quite the right age to be nostalgic or especially anemoic for them. i grew up with them and then stopped using them when the VCR broke, so it was easier to use DVDs because the DVD player worked. They never ever felt vaporwave to me. They never felt Y2K. They were a thing that I used until I didn't anymore. I feel nostalgic when I see VHS tapes being used through the visual signifiers of reality, and when I see the ones that I personally used. But, as prevalent online as the simulacrum of VHS and early 2000s nostalgia/anemoia as represented by a pink wash and TV lines and vaporwave 2 and chromatic aberration is, I kind of just find it annoying, because the 2000s didn't look like that to me. The thing about 2000s technology I encountered in real life was that it either looked bright and futuristic in that vivid plastic way (think something you'd see in a Future Shop flyer or a TV ad, or like the pink CRT television I had), or it looked beige and crusty and old as hell (the computers, speakers, keyboards, and mice your school and family members had. there were still balls in the mice for god's sake). Sometimes i can't tell if the people making things themed with the simulacrum version are old enough to remember but know their young market will eat this shit up, or if they genuinely weren't alive in the early 2000s or maybe any of the 2000s at all to know that it didn't look like a few glitchy tiktok filters. Personally, for 2000s technology aesthetics, I'd like to see people lean more into that 'futuristic' brightness or the older more neutral-toned and boxy tech models, or if we want to try something different, the aesthetics of early digital camera photography. in another timeline flash-induced high contrast and red eyes in photographs became the symbol of soooo vintage and popular. but as long as people condense the early 2000s into this far off distant liminal space where the world exists only in cool-toned pastels and everyone's every VHS has bad degradation, i just really don't think that's going to happen :P
(as a slight digression on that photography note, but at least the vintage-themed insta filters of the 2010s sometimes tried to replicate the lighting and saturation or lack-thereof of vintage photography, a medium that actually would have looked somewhat like that at the time because of how photos were developed. on the other hand, if your VHS tape in the 2000s looked like these faux-VHS rental aesthetic filters do, there was probably something wrong with it. The difference between approaching the past with the quirks of the mediums of the past as they'd usually occur — red eyes in early digital cameras, for example, which would be on the photo from the moment it was taken and was extremely common — and approaching the past with the defects of the same technology 20 years on — like VHS tape degradation that shouldn't be on a tape fresh out of the case in the 2000s — is the difference between approaching the past as it was and approaching the past as The Past.)
i think aesthetically approaching most decades from the lens of it being in the past is going to create an aesthetic that operates with the assumption that it always was the past. what most faux-nostalgic aesthetics that don't replicate the mediums of the time but instead dial them up to 11 and then slap a bunch of filters on miss is that each new decade is the present leaning into the future, in the time that decade is current. if you approach the new millennium aesthetically by taking an image and adding generic instagram or tiktok digital-vintage filters over it to show how vintage it was and always has been, you miss a lot of what made much of the decade, especially the early part, what it was.
#rubia speaks#like ok. u took a perfectly good vaporwave and made it worse. congrats#there's an event online running w the faux 2000s vhs aesthetic this year as the aesthetic theme and i'm so uninspired tbh#it makes it hard to want to participate#anyway.

what happened to high school?
When I was young, I thought high school students were so cool and grown up. I watched as they started driving, dating, having sex, and going to parties and I couldn't wait to be that fun age. Now that I am in high school, where has the fun gone?
As people have realized, generations are starting to look younger and younger. When you imagine a senior in high school, you often don't imagine the people that I go to school with. Their baby faces haven't gone away and the growth spurts have not hit yet. Part of the appeal of high school is the feeling of adulthood and maturity, not only in the classes you take or your social endeavors, but in the way you look. I don't know if it's because there isn't as much of an age gap between myself and a senior in high school now, but when I was little, they just looked so old. I don't see that anymore.
Also, technology is nowhere near new and exciting. It's a part of our everyday lives and I will resent that for the rest of my life. While it comes in handy for teaching and grading, and Google is a major plus, it shouldn't be our only source of school these days. I rarely get assignments on paper and honestly, I wish they were. I want physical copies and mementos from my high school days. Not to mention, I don't even have a real school identification card. It's in an app.
When social media and technology was new and exciting, it acted as a third space for teenagers. Like malls and roller rinks in the eighties and nineties, Tik Tok, Instagram and Tumblr are the "hang-out spots" for teenagers in the late 2010s and 2020s. In the early to mid-2010s, teenagers still went to malls and roller rinks to hang with friends while also adjusting to the new online world. It was a place for teenagers to communicate their ideas and express themselves. Now it has become a part of everything. I almost never have conversations where someone doesn't whip out their phone mid sentence
Also, we have no defining trends for our generation. Social media has brought forth something called the microtrend. A song, make-up look or body type will be a trend for two weeks before out short-attention spanned peers decide it's not interesting or cool anymore and move on to something else. While the nineties had grunge and glamor and the eighties had acid wash denim and big hair, the 20s has....leggings? And Utah curls? What I mean is, when you think of the 1990s, a specific image comes to mind. Grunge music and dark eye make-up. When you think of the eighties you picture big curly hair and neon spandex. When you think of the 2020s, nothing in specific comes to mind because we can't decide on one thing. Nothing is interesting or cool enough anymore. We live in such a capitalist, consumerist society that once we engage in something too much, it becomes boring and we have to find something else. Social media and influencers only amplify that. I don't know if it's Gen-Z's push-back on being categorized or defined by anything, or if nothing is good enough anymore.
And don't even get me started on the music. In the 20th-century, different music trends came and went. In the 70s hair metal and power ballads became huge. In the 80s glam metal, synth, and pop started to materialize and in the 90s alternative rock, grunge, nu metal, and boy-bands made their breakthrough. This overbearing control of the music industry made music a novelty and allowed teenagers to be a part of a subculture. When punk came about in the 70s and goth in the 70s and 80s, it allowed teenagers to interact with another and create relationships because of the subculture they identified with. This made high school the stereotypical version we see in 90s and early-2000s movies. The goths sit over here and the popular kids sit over there. Even in the 90s with grunge and the 2000s with emo. Though to come it seemed “clique-y”, it made making friends and self-expression more cohesive and less stand-out. Even into the early 2010s, those who liked pop punk, didn’t hangout with the kids who like mainstream pop or trap beats.
With the rise of the influencer and easy access to higher paying or earning jobs, anybody can make music, even if they’re horrible at it. Content creators online put out singles or albums that sample the same beats as everybody else and have the same dense and shallow lyrics, where it is obvious they’re trying to sound deep and meaningful but they’re fully missing the mark. It’s hard to want to claim a genre or use a specific sound or style of music to identify your generation or simply the people you hangout with. New music doesn’t have that power anymore. New major music genres have not been pioneered since the 90s with grunge and nu metal. People that are making music aren’t creative and the creatives aren’t making music.
The things people listen to and the way that they dress says a lot about them. For teenagers, it has said everything about them. However in the last ten years, social media and technology has ripped those ideals away from us. Nobody wants to be perceived as one thing. They want to be everything and nothing is good enough to define anybody anymore. Tik Tok has ruined the essence and the glowing aura that once was the teenager.

Spunlace Manufacturers in India: Pioneers of Sustainable Non-Woven Fabrics
Spunlace non-woven fabrics are taking the Indian market by storm. These versatile materials, made by entangling water jets with carded fibres, offer a unique combination of strength, absorbency, and softness. But what truly sets them apart is their potential for sustainability. Indian spunlace manufacturers are at the forefront of this movement, producing eco-friendly fabrics for a wide range of applications.
Leaders in Sustainable Production
Several Indian manufacturers are pioneering sustainable practices in spunlace production. They are:
Adopting recycled fibres: Many companies are incorporating recycled polyester, cotton, and wood pulp into their spunlace fabrics. This reduces reliance on virgin materials and minimizes landfill waste.
Minimizing water usage: Advanced technologies are being used to optimize water consumption during the manufacturing process. This not only conserves a precious resource but also reduces energy use for treatment.
Biodegradable options: Some manufacturers are exploring the use of bio-based fibres like bamboo and PLA (polylactic acid) in their spunlace fabrics. These materials offer a more sustainable end-of-life option compared to traditional fibres.
Leading the Way: Spunlace Manufacturers in India
India boasts several spunlace manufacturers committed to sustainability and innovation. Here are a few examples:
Welspun Living: A leading textile manufacturer, Welspun Living offers a range of spunlace fabrics for diverse applications, including filtration and hygiene products.
Samridhi Creation: Specializes in high-quality spunlace fabrics for wet wipes, wound care, and hygiene products, with a focus on eco-friendly production processes.
Favourite Fab: Known for their commitment to transparency and quality, Favourite Fab offers spunlace fabrics ideal for baby wipes and other hygiene applications.
Filantro First Exports Limited: A relatively new player, Filantro is making waves in the spunlace industry. Established in 2020, they specialize in cross lapped spunlace fabric, a unique type known for its strength and isotropic properties (equal strength in all directions). Filantro leverages advanced technology and focuses on sustainable practices, offering innovative solutions for various industries like hygiene, medical, and automotive. Their vision is to become a world leader in spunlace nonwoven production.
Benefits of Spunlace for Sustainability
Spunlace fabrics themselves offer inherent sustainability advantages:
Durability: Spunlace fabrics are known for their strength and reusability. This translates to fewer single-use products and a longer lifespan for items like wipes and cleaning cloths.
Biodegradability: Many spunlace fabrics, particularly those made from natural or bio-based fibres, are biodegradable. This means they decompose naturally at the end of their useful life, minimizing environmental impact.
Washability: Certain spunlace fabrics can be washed and reused, further reducing waste compared to disposable alternatives.
Applications Driving Sustainability
The use of spunlace fabrics in various applications contributes to a more sustainable future:
Wet wipes: Spunlace is a popular choice for baby wipes, makeup wipes, and other personal care products. Sustainable spunlace options offer an eco-conscious alternative to conventional wipes.
Medical wipes and gowns: The medical field heavily relies on disposable wipes and gowns. Spunlace fabrics made from recycled or bio-based materials can provide a more sustainable solution while maintaining hygiene standards.
Industrial wipes and cleaning cloths: Reusable spunlace cloths can significantly reduce waste generated by disposable cleaning products in industrial settings.
The Future of Spunlace in India
The Indian spunlace industry is poised for significant growth, driven by rising demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products. As manufacturers continue to innovate and refine their processes, spunlace fabrics will play a key role in creating a more sustainable future for India and the world.
Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities
While the future looks bright for spunlace, some challenges remain. Raising consumer awareness about the sustainability benefits of these fabrics is crucial. Additionally, ensuring the widespread availability of recycling infrastructure for used spunlace products will be essential for maximizing their eco-friendly potential. By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the vast opportunities, Indian spunlace manufacturers can solidify their position as leaders in the global market for sustainable non-woven fabrics.

Market Opportunities
With growing acne problems in Asia Pacific and developing countries, opportunities exist for tailored affordable products addressing specific skin concerns. Online platforms and social selling models are finding success in direct-to-customer outreach especially among teens and millennials. Targeted anti-acne subscription boxes and loyalty programs can fortify customer retention.
Impact of COVID-19 on Anti-acne Cosmetics Market Growth
The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the growth of the anti-acne cosmetics market. During the lockdowns imposed across various countries, people spent more time at home and outdoor activities reduced significantly. As a result, the demand for anti-acne cosmetic products declined in 2020. Manufacturing and supply chain disruptions due to lockdowns also affected the market. However, with the shift to the work from home culture, people started focusing more on self-care and personal grooming even while staying indoors. This led to increased demand for anti-pimple creams and face washes in the post-lockdown period of 2021. Looking ahead, companies are expected to focus on innovation in product formulations, greater access through e-commerce channels and awareness campaigns on handling skin issues remotely to boost the market's recovery. This is attributed to rising acne issues among adults due to changing lifestyles and stress levels. The region houses leading brands that offer a wide range of anti-pimple products. The USA accounts for majority of the North American market due to growing skin and beauty consciousness among its population. Europe follows North America in terms of value, with countries like Germany, United Kingdom and France holding significant shares. Availability of premium anti-acne ranges tailored to European consumer needs drives growth here.
Fastest Growing Region for Anti-acne Cosmetics Market
The Asia Pacific region is projected to be the fastest growing market for anti-acne cosmetics globally during the forecast period. This is because of increasing disposable incomes, growing urbanization and exposure to global beauty trends in developing Asian countries. Rising acne problems among teenagers and working millennials further boosts demand. Furthermore, international brands are investing heavily in the region by launching affordable and culturally appropriate formulations. China and India are envisioned to lead the Asia Pacific market due to their huge population base and emerging middle-class consumers seeking clear skin and appearance enhancement products.

Super Plastronics' ₹200 Crore Investment in Noida Plant to Strengthen Thomson's Washing Machine Portfolio
Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL), a renowned brand licensee for international electronics companies, has recently made a significant investment of ₹200 crores in a washing machine manufacturing plant in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. This strategic move comes as SPPL aims to expand its production capacity for the washing machine category under the brand Thomson. The collaboration with leading e-commerce platform Flipkart further bolsters their plans to strengthen their presence in the market. With a lineup of 25 models set to be launched throughout the year, SPPL is poised to capture a substantial market share in the online washing machine segment.
Avneet Singh Marwah, the CEO of Super Plastronics Pvt. Ltd expressed confidence in the company's prospects following the ₹200 crore investment in the new washing machine plant. The objective is to enhance their capacity and offer customers a wide range of washing machine options infused with cutting-edge technology. Thomson, in collaboration with a third-party manufacturer, initially entered the Indian washing machine market in 2020 with a current capacity of 300,000 units. By the end of this year, the expanded facility is projected to produce 400,000 units annually, catering to the growing demand for Thomson washing machines.
Super Plastronics recognizes the need to compete aggressively in the Indian electronics market, which has witnessed increased competition due to the introduction of new products by industry leaders. To stay on par with established players, Marwah emphasized the importance of having a completely backward integrated manufacturing plant. This approach enables Super Plastronics to have better control over the manufacturing process and ensures the ability to match the offerings of existing players.
Thomson, after re-entering the Indian market in 2018 with its range of smart TVs, has been continuously expanding its product portfolio. Earlier this year, the brand successfully launched air coolers, and now, with the introduction of a new line of washing machines, Thomson completes its range of home appliances. This comprehensive lineup positions Thomson as a one-stop solution for consumers seeking high-quality electronic products for their homes.
To reach a broader customer base and facilitate seamless distribution, Thomson has partnered with Flipkart, India's leading e-commerce marketplace. The new series of Thomson washing machines and Google TVs will be exclusively available on Flipkart starting from May 30, 2023. This collaboration leverages the extensive reach of Flipkart, enabling Thomson to tap into the online market and cater to the evolving needs of tech-savvy Indian consumers.
Super Plastronics' ₹200 crore investment in the Noida plant reflects their confidence in India's burgeoning electronics market. With increasing disposable incomes, rising digitalization, and growing consumer aspirations, the demand for innovative and reliable electronic products is rising. The investment demonstrates Super Plastronics' commitment to meeting this demand and contributes to the government's vision of promoting domestic manufacturing and creating employment opportunities.
Conclusion
Super Plastronics' significant investment in the Noida washing machine plant represents a strategic move to strengthen Thomson's position in the Indian market. By expanding its production capacity, collaborating with Flipkart, and offering a comprehensive range of washing machines, Thomson is well-positioned to capture a significant market share. The investment underscores the company's commitment to providing cutting-edge technology and high-quality home appliances to Indian consumers. As India's electronics market continues to thrive, investments like these contribute to the country's economic growth and reinforce its position as a global manufacturing hub.

WEEK 6: SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS AND THE SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT
1. Fast fashion:
Fast fashion has grown in popularity in recent years, coinciding with rapid development and the demand for inexpensive and convenient clothing in the "fast-food" manner. Dr. Preeti Arya, an assistant professor of textile development and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, defines fast fashion as a business model that focuses on producing clothing in large quantities and as quickly as feasible in reaction to current trends (Nicioli 2023). The term first appeared in a New York Times article in 1989, when Zara's first store debuted in the United States. According to the Times, the clothing were meant to be designed from concept to final product in 15 days, at moderate pricing and with client ease.
Ever since the inception of "fast-fashion" trend, brands such as Zara, H&M or Mango has been trying to replicate styles which inspired from prestigious runways of New York, Milan, Paris, etc. The great side is that they can do a mass production of those so-called "trendy designs in real-time" as brands can deliver vast amounts of apparel and ensure that customers never run out of inventory (Stanton 2023). The goal is very clear: Getting these designs into customers' hands while the clothing is still popular and affordable. Buyers can experience dressed in the same manner as their favorite celebrities, as if they were on the real fashion runway, for a much fairer price.
2. Impacts of “instant noodle” fashion styles on the environment:
However, everything has their own down side and fast-fashion is not an inception. Given the fact that brands have been producing clothes in mass quantities, the consequences of it has always been a hot topic, if not the hottest to debate. The fashion industry has faced criticism for failing to address social and environmental concerns, putting non-financial expenses on the global agenda (Niinimäki et al. 2020) and an analysis from Business Insider has proven it right. Fashion production accounts for 10% of total world carbon emissions, which is comparable to the European Union. It depletes water resources and pollutes rivers and streams, and 85% of all textiles end up in landfills each year (Maiti 2024). Washing clothes everyday might seem to be a harmless daily to-do in every individual's bucket list but in reality, it throws 500,000 tons of microfibres into the ocean each year, which is comparable to 50 billion plastic bottles. Fiber production is also regarded as one of the major contributions to the industry's worldwide pollution footprint. The survey also discovered that fiber production has the greatest impact on freshwater withdrawal (water diverted or removed from a surface water or groundwater source) and ecosystem quality due to cotton agriculture. The UN predicts that by 2030, emissions from textile production would have increased by 60%.
3. "Slow fashion - slow food - slow digestion"
On the other brighter side, Kate Fletcher (2007) developed the slow fashion movement after being inspired by the "slow food" movement, which promotes responsibility in food production and consumption. Slow fashion companies prioritize craftsmanship, environmental stewardship, and high-quality items (Brewer 2019). Slow fashion is a fashion philosophy that values sustainability, ethical principles, and quality before quantity. It focuses on quality above quantity, ethical manufacturing, sustainable resources, local production, and transparency.
4. Effects of slow fashion on the environment:
Subsequently, slow fashion emphasizes environmentally friendly processes and ethical working conditions. In contrast to fast fashion, it values quality and longevity while advocating for both the environment and people. Slow fashion promotes environmentally friendly materials, decreases waste, lowers carbon emissions, and encourages ethical manufacturing practices. It also ensures quality manufacturing, which extends the life of the garment or material. A growing number of farms and organizations support the slow-fashion movement. One such example is the Better Cotton Initiative, which establishes principles and practices for sustainable production, while several other organizations provide resources and information to modern farmers. Slow fashion seeks to foster a more sustainable and ethical fashion sector that prioritizes workmanship, durability, and social responsibility by encouraging thoughtful consumption and responsible production processes.

‘Cheese In The Trap’ and The Fast Fashion’s Dilemma
Sapo: Fashion brands would never tell you the truth that the only way to be sustainable is to buy fewer clothes.
1. Digital Citizenship
In response to the pervasive influence of social media in daily life, new citizen norms and identities have emerged, prioritizing personalization and sharing over traditional political affiliations. This phenomenon has spurred the development of digital citizenship (Vromen 2017).
The slow fashion movement's long-term success relies heavily on digital citizenship. As people evolve more aware of their online presence and social responsibilities, they use digital channels to promote ethical fashion practices. Social media networks are important tools for spreading information and mobilizing support for sustainable fashion businesses. Individuals use digital activism and community building to put pressure on the fashion industry to prioritize ethical production processes and worker rights. Digital citizens are influencing the discourse surrounding slow fashion by leveraging their online power, encouraging a more sustainable future in the industry (Alison Gwilt et al. 2012).
2. Green-washing problem
The line between authentic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and greenwashing is often blurred, leading consumers to believe they are making ethical choices when purchasing from fast fashion companies. The perpetuation of mass consumerism by the fashion industry exacerbates environmental degradation and labor exploitation. Social media platforms serve as potent tools for the fashion industry to promote consumerism through influencer marketing and targeted advertising. Brands like H&M, ZARA, and Uniqlo have faced criticism for lacking transparency in their CSR campaigns, highlighting a contentious issue in the apparel industry. This dilemma underscores the challenges faced by brands in addressing environmental and social concerns raised by activists and stakeholders.
3. The role of social media influencers in the slow fashion movement
Social media has become a main source of information (Alalwan et al., 2017; Park & Cho, 2012), allowing customers to make more informed decisions (Diffley et al., 2011). Social media is one of the top information sources respondents rely on about environmental and social aspects of the garment supply chain. Influencers have been found to have a considerable impact on consumer decisions, notably purchasing, indicating an opportunity for them to encourage sustainable behavior (Bognar et al., 2019). While influencers may favorably affect circular selling behaviors, they may have a detrimental impact on circular purchasing behaviors, which are critical to the slow fashion movement. However, when firms prioritize growing sales, the impact of social media influencers on customer buy intentions in the fashion industry is reduced. Nonetheless, the slow fashion movement has been effective in boosting consumer awareness and encouraging a change towards more sustainable purchase habits. If consumers believe that their choices contribute to environmental protection, they are more likely to support slow fashion products (Chi et al. 2021), indicating a crucial stage in this long-term transformation.

Hate and Humanity in Victor LaValle’s ‘The Destroyer’
“I don’t owe this country a damn thing except the same hate it’s always given me”
Isn’t it scary how humans can hate just as deeply as we can love? How we can experience our lives so personally while also having the capacity to completely dehumanize the lives around us? LaValle explores these thought-provoking fallacies in his graphic novel, ‘The Destroyer’.
The central themes of artificial intelligence (AI), mortality-challenging medical technology and the power of interpersonal relationships are a vehicle through which LaValle unleashes a wider socio-political discourse on racism in America today. Who is the real monster? Does monstrosity and humanity come from the same place?
Approaching the climactic ending of the novel, Dr Baker asks “It’s not just about how humans treat artificial life, but how you all will treat us. What kind of ethics should we expect? What kind do we deserve?”. This raises important questions about which lives are valued in society, and poses the mistreatment of AI as an allegory for the appropriation and exploitation of Black bodies. The most recent and global wave in the Black Lives Matter Movement washed over the planet in 2020, when the murder of innocent Black people at the hands of police brutality was broadcast across the world. Although many messages emerging from these events were not new information for Black communities, for many more privileged groups, it was the first time they were forced to realise just how little the lives of Black, indigenous and other marginalised people were valued.
“Look at the backflips people will do to find the humanity in that monster… but when they saw a boy like mine, they had no love to spare”.
Ultimately, society is racially segregated and hypocritical. Leaders say we are all equal in the eyes of the law but the enactment of this leaves much to be desired in real life. Young Black boys are shot in the street for obscure and unfounded concerns, such as Akai, the son of mad scientist Dr Baker, who resurrected him using nano-technology. And despite being made out of more nanobot fibres than flesh, her son displays more compassion, patience and humanity than anyone else in the novel.
‘The Destroyer’ is also a fantastic portrayal of Black female rage in a way that is fleshed out properly with her villain origin story. What lies behind her bloodthirsty and unrelenting need for retribution are the lengths that black mothers will go to in order to protect their children – which is also the underpinning theme of Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’. There are supernatural aspects to both of these stories, which serves to alleviate the intense pain that the audiences would have had to witness and what Black mothers have to contend with when a person they love is ripped out of their life in this way. I cannot even begin to imagine what that must be like, and it breaks my heart to even acknowledge that such atrocities are not confined to the pages of a graphic novel.
Lots to think about this week…
Until next time!

WEEK 6: SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS AND THE SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT
1. Fast fashion
In recent times, along with the rapid development and the demand for a “fast-food” like style of clothes, cheap and convenient, fast fashion is becoming more and more popular. Fast fashion is a business model that focuses on the production of garments in bulk, and as quickly as possible, in response to current trends, according to Dr. Preeti Arya, an assistant professor of textile development and marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York (Nicioli 2023). The term was initially used in a New York Times article in 1989 when Zara's first shop opened in the United States. According to the Times, the clothes were expected to have a design created from an idea to the final product in only 15 days, with reasonable prices and convenience for customers.
In general, fast fashion is developed based on luxurious showcases from many celebrities and designers, in many fashion runways of New York, Paris, Milan… Reputable brands such as Zara, H&M, or Mango replicate those trends as they appear in real-time to create new, desirable styles weekly, if not daily. They can provide massive amounts of clothing and can ensure that customers never tire of inventory (Stanton 2023). The objective is to get these designs into the hands of customers while the clothing is still at its peak popularity and all-too-low costs. Buyers can have a feeling of dressing in the same style as their admired celebrities like they are on the real fashion runway at a reasonable price.
2. Impacts of “instant noodle” fashion styles on the environment
In recent years, the fashion industry has received abundant criticism over its limited consideration of social and environmental issues, placing the non-financial costs of fashion on the global public agenda (Niinimäki et al. 2020). According to an analysis by Business Insider, fashion production comprises 10% of total global carbon emissions, as much as the European Union. It dries up water sources and pollutes rivers and streams, while 85% of all textiles go to dumps each year (Maiti 2024). Even washing clothes releases 500,000 tons of microfibres into the ocean each year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles. Fiber production is also considered one of the main contributors to the industry’s global pollution impacts. The report also found that fiber production has the highest influence on freshwater withdrawal (water diverted or extracted from a surface water or groundwater source) and ecosystem quality caused by cotton agriculture. In 2030, the UN predicted that emissions from textile production itself are expected to increase by 60%.
3. "Slow fashion - slow food - slow digestion"
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the fast fashion production model, Kate Fletcher (2007) founded the slow fashion movement by drawing inspiration from the “slow food” movement, which emphasizes responsibility in food production and consumption. Companies that emphasize more sustainable practices make up the slow fashion movement, prizing craftsmanship, good stewardship, and quality products (Brewer 2019). Slow fashion is an approach to fashion that prioritizes sustainability, ethical principles, and quality over quantity. It emphasizes quality over quantity, ethical manufacture, sustainable materials, local production, and transparency.
4. Effects of slow fashion on the environment
Slow fashion promotes sustainable techniques and ethical working conditions. In opposite to quick fashion, it prioritizes quality and durability while advocating for both nature and people. Slow fashion promotes eco-friendly materials, minimizes waste, reduces carbon emissions, and supports ethical production processes. It also guarantees excellent manufacturing, extending the life of the garment or material. A rising number of farms and organizations favor the slow-fashion trend. One such example is the Better Cotton Initiative, which specifies principles and practices for sustainable production, while several more groups give resources and knowledge to modern farmers. By promoting mindful consumption and responsible production practices, slow fashion aims to create a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry that values craftsmanship, durability, and social responsibility.
