thinking about "anyone ever teach you to drink like a man?" something about swansea dragging daisuke down with him, but only into the greatest years of his life. something about "if you're going to drink, i'd rather you do it at home." something about acknowledging daisuke not as a child but as a fledgling man, something that not many people have acknowledged him as yet. something about daisuke finally getting the bonding he wanted with swansea. something about daisuke finding twofold comfort in alcohol, because it dulls the pain but it also brings him closer to the man he's dying for the approval of. something about daisuke being more scared than he lets on, maybe more scared than he realizes, but swansea can see it in the way his shoulders are always tense now and how he can't let a comfortable silence rest and trying to offer this kid the one thing that's always made him feel better. something about the hangover that feels like an axe to the head

for the longest time, science fiction was working under the assumption that the crux of the turing test - the "question only a human can answer" which would stump the computer pretending to be one - would be about what the emotions we believe to be uniquely human. what is love? what does it mean to be a mother? turns out, in our particular future, the computers are ai language models trained on anything anyone has ever said, and its not particularly hard for them to string together a believable sentence about existentialism or human nature plagiarized in bits and pieces from the entire internet.

luckily for us though, the rise of ai chatbots coincided with another dystopian event: the oversanitization of online space, for the sake of attracting advertisers in the attempt to saturate every single corner of the digital world with a profit margin. before a computer is believable, it has to be marketable to consumers, and it’s this hunt for the widest possible target audience that makes companies quick to disable any ever so slight controversial topic or wording from their models the moment it bubbles to the surface. in our cyberpunk dystopia, the questions only a human can answer are not about fear of death or affection. instead, it is those that would look bad in a pr teams powerpoint.

sorry to yap about mouthwashing again but i'm thinking a lot about the dynamic between curly and anya.

anya so clearly wanted curly to open up to her. she said as much during the psych evaluation, during the moment they spent in front of the nighttime screen, in the way she stays by his side even when the sight of him makes her nauseous. even after he did wrong by her.

because he did do wrong by her. he said he would go talk to jimmy, that he would do anything to make this fucked up situation better for her... and i think he thought he was doing the right thing. in a sense, he was. he's the captain of a long haul shipping mission. he doesn't have much in the way of punitive action other than giving the crew a talking-to. they're a skeleton crew -- they can't afford to have anyone not pulling their weight. what else could he have done but talk to him?

of course, the answer is that he could have done more. he could have confronted jimmy in a way that told him that he valued the safety of anya more than jimmy's feelings. i don't think he realized his own bias in that regard.

i think one of curly's major flaws is the fact that he tries so hard to see the best in people, especially people he cares about. and there's no one he cares about more than jimmy. how do you reckon with the fact that someone you love, someone you've loved for a very long time, is a monster? he wanted to take responsibility, but he wasn't able to put his emotions aside to be the captain, the friend that anya needed him to be.

and yet, despite it all, anya did her best to take care of him when he needed her. she still cared about him, still repeated her mantra of "our worst moments don't make us monsters." after the confrontation, everything happened so fast. if he were able to talk now, what would he say to her? does the guilt hurt him more than the injuries he's sustained?

for anya's sake, i hope the answer to that is no. i don't think she would get any satisfaction from curly's guilt. but unfortunately, the world seems to have a way of making sure anya always gets the short end of the stick.
