SURF'S UP IN THE. UNDERSEA KINGDOM OF ATLANTIS -- A MUTANT SUPER-TEAM FOR THE 1980s.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on published, inked, & remastered pin-up artwork of "Namorita and the Sensational Atlantean Mutants -- SURF!," from the "New Mutants Annual" Vol. 1 #5. October, 1989. Marvel Comics. Artwork by Rob Liefeld and Joe Rubinstein.
FUN FACT: Rob Liefeld is celebrated today for turning this lowest-selling title of the X-franchise into a financial blockbuster, which eventually led him to helming a book of his own with the "X-FORCE" title in the early '90s.
Resolution from largest to smallest: 1826x2738, 1145x1711, & 1078x1600.

what i miss the most from the classic new mutants comics was just the moments of kids being kids. like the absurd sitcom-level moments where just like :0 omfg… and you can’t help but laugh. i miss their day to day low-stakes shenanigans :(
#new mutants annuals save me… save me new mutants annuals….#missing episodic story structure hours#i think more comics should be more low stakes#like i want to know about their lives!!!!#idc about what’s happening AROUND them!!#i want more introspective low stakes comics!!!!#probably why i miss gww’s og ms marvel run too….#i like getting to know the characters#idk maybe an unpopular opinion but they (the comics industry) keep trying to throw Blorbos into Situations and then talking too much about#the Situation and not Blorbo#i am not here for the Situation!!! im here for them!!!#comics#dc#marvel#new mutants

Sunday Sub-Mariner's World
SURF first appeared in New Mutants Annual 5, which was one of the Atlantis Attacks crossover annuals. Created by Louise Simonson and Rob Liefield. The team consisted of a trio of Atlanteans from the Maritania settlement which was nuclear test site. This was before the X-gene concept so I'm not sure if they are still considered mutants, but they only showed up in one more issue, West Coast Avengers Annual 5.
The team consists of:
Undertow - a water manipulator ... with fabulous hair
Eel - a stretchy sort of underwater Mr. Fantastic
Sharkskin - a strong guy with spikes across his arms and shoulders for TEARING through things. I don't know what to tell you it. It was the 90s.
They had been exiled from conquered Atlantis by Attuma because they were mutants, but were loyal to the city and Namor. They join Namorita to recover a Horn of Doom (Proteus) that was stolen from her by agents of Deviant Ghaur, who resembled the New Mutants. SURF and Namorita find the New Mutants, engage in an obligatory misunderstanding fight, before joining forces to take on Ghaur and the monster he's summoned to destroy Atlantis.
They dispatch the monster, save most of Atlantis and it's people, but Ghaur flees and the Horn appears to be lost again.
They were clearly meant to be a Teen Atlantean Team, but Marvel went with New Warriors, and put Namorita on that team.

the X-Tinction agenda is such an edgy 90s event that makes little sense without context but it is rewarding and satisfying to see the (about) 300 comic issues i read actually matter and come together nicely. was it worth it? uhhhhhhhhhh probably not. but i know what's going on so there's that
#yael's x men ramblings#i say 300 issues but league of comic geeks says i've read 400 comics just by claremont#so who knows how many issues this really was#it's almost 200 of uncanny x-men and 95 of new mutants and 60 of x-factor#not taking into account annuals specials and excalibur#it's a shit ton of comics#obviously not all of it is relevant but#i feel like at the end of his first uncanny run claremont IS pulling together some references and plotlines from his earliest issues#and for new mutants and x-factor the runs till then are very relevant and related
