Jay Sekulow, who defended Mr. Trump at his first impeachment trial, has worked on behalf of the Green Party in Nevada, a rare battleground where Democrats have successfully thwarted her.

Q&A: Claire Walsh on how J-PALâs King Climate Action Initiative tackles the twin climate and poverty crises
The King Climate Action Initiative (K-CAI) is the flagship climate change program of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), which innovates, tests, and scales solutions at the nexus of climate change and poverty alleviation, together with policy partners worldwide.
Claire Walsh is the associate director of policy at J-PAL Global at MIT. She is also the project director of K-CAI. Here, Walsh talks about the work of K-CAI since its launch in 2020, and describes the ways its projects are making a difference. This is part of an ongoing series exploring how the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences is addressing the climate crisis.
Q: According to the King Climate Action Initiative (K-CAI), any attempt to address poverty effectively must also simultaneously address climate change. Why is that?
A: Climate change will disproportionately harm people in poverty, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, because they tend to live in places that are more exposed to climate risk. These are nations in sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia where low-income communities rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods, so extreme weather â heat, droughts, and flooding â can be devastating for peopleâs jobs and food security. In fact, the World Bank estimates that up to 130 million more people may be pushed into poverty by climate change by 2030.
This is unjust because these countries have historically emitted the least; their people didnât cause the climate crisis. At the same time, they are trying to improve their economies and improve peopleâs welfare, so their energy demands are increasing, and they are emitting more. But they donât have the same resources as wealthy nations for mitigation or adaptation, and many developing countries understandably donât feel eager to put solving a problem they didnât create at the top of their priority list. This makes finding paths forward to cutting emissions on a global scale politically challenging.
For these reasons, the problems of enhancing the well-being of people experiencing poverty, addressing inequality, and reducing pollution and greenhouse gases are inextricably linked.
Q: So how does K-CAI tackle this hybrid challenge?
A: Our initiative is pretty unique. We are a competitive, policy-based research and development fund that focuses on innovating, testing, and scaling solutions. We support researchers from MIT and other universities, and their collaborators, who are actually implementing programs, whether NGOs [nongovernmental organizations], government, or the private sector. We fund pilots of small-scale ideas in a real-world setting to determine if they hold promise, followed by larger randomized, controlled trials of promising solutions in climate change mitigation, adaptation, pollution reduction, and energy access. Our goal is to determine, through rigorous research, if these solutions are actually working â for example, in cutting emissions or protecting forests or helping vulnerable communities adapt to climate change. And finally, we offer path-to-scale grants which enable governments and NGOs to expand access to programs that have been tested and have strong evidence of impact.
We think this model is really powerful. Since we launched in 2020, we have built a portfolio of over 30 randomized evaluations and 13 scaling projects in more than 35 countries. And to date, these projects have informed the scale ups of evidence-based climate policies that have reached over 15 million people.
Q: It seems like K-CAI is advancing a kind of policy science, demanding proof of a programâs capacity to deliver results at each stage.Â
A: This is one of the factors that drew me to J-PAL back in 2012. I majored in anthropology and studied abroad in Uganda. From those experiences I became very passionate about pursuing a career focused on poverty reduction. To me, it is unfair that in a world full of so much wealth and so much opportunity there exists so much extreme poverty. I wanted to dedicate my career to that, but Iâm also a very detail-oriented nerd who really cares about whether a program that claims to be doing something for people is accomplishing what it claims.
Itâs been really rewarding to see demand from governments and NGOs for evidence-informed policymaking grow over my 12 years at J-PAL. This policy science approach holds exciting promise to help transform public policy and climate policy in the coming decades. Â
Q: Can you point to K-CAI-funded projects that meet this high bar and are now making a significant impact?
A: Several examples jump to mind. In the state of Gujarat, India, pollution regulators are trying to cut particulate matter air pollution, which is devastating to human health. The region is home to many major industries whose emissions negatively affect most of the stateâs 70 million residents.
We partnered with state pollution regulators â kind of a regional EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] â to test an emissions trading scheme that is used widely in the U.S. and Europe but not in low- and middle-income countries. The government monitors pollution levels using technology installed at factories that sends data in real time, so the regulator knows exactly what their emissions look like. The regulator sets a cap on the overall level of pollution, allocates permits to pollute, and industries can trade emissions permits.
In 2019, researchers in the J-PAL network conducted the worldâs first randomized, controlled trial of this emissions trading scheme and found that it cut pollution by 20 to 30 percent â a surprising reduction. It also reduced firmsâ costs, on average, because the costs of compliance went down. The state government was eager to scale up the pilot, and in the past two years, two other cities, including Ahmedabad, the biggest city in the state, have adopted the concept.
We are also supporting a project in Niger, whose economy is hugely dependent on rain-fed agriculture but with climate change is experiencing rapid desertification. Researchers in the J-PAL network have been testing training farmers in a simple, inexpensive rainwater harvesting technique, where farmers dig a half-moon-shaped hole called a demi-lune right before the rainy season. This demi-lune feeds crops that are grown directly on top of it, and helps return land that resembled flat desert to arable production.
Researchers found that training farmers in this simple technology increased adoption from 4 percent to 94 percent and that demi-lunes increased agricultural output and revenue for farmers from the first year. K-CAI is funding a path-to-scale grant so local implementers can teach this technique to over 8,000 farmers and build a more cost-effective program model. If this takes hold, the team will work with local partners to scale the training to other relevant regions of the country and potentially other countries in the Sahel.
One final example that we are really proud of, because we first funded it as a pilot and now itâs in the path to scale phase: We supported a team of researchers working with partners in Bangladesh trying to reduce carbon emissions and other pollution from brick manufacturing, an industry that generates 17 percent of the countryâs carbon emissions. The scale of manufacturing is so great that at some times of year, Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) looks like Mordor.
Workers form these bricks and stack hundreds of thousands of them, which they then fire by burning coal. A team of local researchers and collaborators from our J-PAL network found that you can reduce the amount of coal needed for the kilns by making some low-cost changes to the manufacturing process, including stacking the bricks in a way that increases airflow in the kiln and feeding the coal fires more frequently in smaller rather than larger batches.
In the randomized, controlled trial K-CAI supported, researchers found that this cut carbon and pollution emissions significantly, and now the government has invited the team to train 1,000 brick manufacturers in Dhaka in these techniques.
Q: These are all fascinating and powerful instances of implementing ideas that address a range of problems in different parts of the world. But can K-CAI go big enough and fast enough to take a real bite out of the twin poverty and climate crisis?
A: Weâre not trying to find silver bullets. We are trying to build a large playbook of real solutions that work to solve specific problems in specific contexts. As you build those up in the hundreds, you have a deep bench of effective approaches to solve problems that can add up in a meaningful way. And because J-PAL works with governments and NGOs that have the capacity to take the research into action, since 2003, over 600 million people around the world have been reached by policies and programs that are informed by evidence that J-PAL-affiliated researchers produced. While global challenges seem daunting, J-PAL has shown that in 20 years we can achieve a great deal, and there is huge potential for future impact.
But unfortunately, globally, there is an underinvestment in policy innovation to combat climate change that may generate quicker, lower-cost returns at a large scale â especially in policies that determine which technologies get adopted or commercialized. For example, a lot of the huge fall in prices of renewable energy was enabled by early European government investments in solar and wind, and then continuing support for innovation in renewable energy.
Thatâs why I think social sciences have so much to offer in the fight against climate change and poverty; we are working where technology meets policy and where technology meets real people, which often determines their success or failure. The world should be investing in policy, economic, and social innovation just as much as it is investing in technological innovation.
Q: Do you need to be an optimist in your job?
A: I am half-optimist, half-pragmatist. I have no control over the climate change outcome for the world. And regardless of whether we can successfully avoid most of the potential damages of climate change, when I look back, Iâm going to ask myself, âDid I fight or not?â The only choice I have is whether or not I fought, and I want to be a fighter.

Suddenly There Arenât Enough Babies (WSJ) The world is at a startling demographic milestone. Sometime soon, the global fertility rate will drop below the point needed to keep population constant. Fertility is falling almost everywhere, for women across all levels of income, education and labor-force participation. The falling birthrates come with huge implications for the way people live, how economies grow and the standings of the worldâs superpowers. Some estimates now put the number of babies each woman has below the global replacement rate of about 2.2. The U.S. long ago passed that level. South Koreaâs rate, the worldâs lowest, was once unimaginable. In high-income nations, fertility fell below replacement in the 1970s, and took a leg down during the pandemic. Itâs dropping in developing countries, too. India surpassed China as the most populous country last year, yet its fertility is now below replacement. âThe demographic winter is coming,â said JesĂşs FernĂĄndez-Villaverde, an economist specializing in demographics at the University of Pennsylvania.

Persistent Brazil floods (Reuters) Devastating and ongoing flooding in southern Brazil is forcing some of the half million displaced residents to consider uprooting their lives from inundated towns to rebuild on higher ground. Two weeks after the onset of torrential rains, the Guaiba River running by state capital Porto Alegre is rising again, having passed the all-time high. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the streets of dozens of towns have turned into slow-moving rivers. Just in the area around Porto Alegre, where four rivers converge to form the Guaiba River, researchers estimate nearly 3,800 square km (1,500 square miles) were flooded. That is more than the urban footprint of the Washington DC metro area, which includes 10 counties in two adjacent states. With hundreds of thousands of families fleeing the floods, the disasterâwhich has killed at least 147 people, with 127 still missingâcould touch off one of Brazilâs biggest cases of climate migration in recent history.
Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar (Reuters) An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain's maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years. The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said. The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar. The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank. The incident is the latest example of recurring orca rammings around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain. According to the research group GTOA, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

The man leading Russia's war in Ukraine is out in a surprise shake-up (NBC News) The man in charge of Russiaâs war in Ukraine has been fired. Sergei Shoigu, Russiaâs now-former defense minister, attended Putinâs recent inauguration ceremony and Russiaâs Victory Day parade last week, but was removed from his post just a few days after. Shoiguâs firing was surprising due to his popularity and close ties to Putin, and marks the biggest shakeup in Russiaâs military hierarchy since the war in Ukraine began. His replacement is Andrei Belousov, a 65-year-old civil economist whoâs served as Putinâs deputy prime minister, economic aide, and minister of economic development. The Kremlin said Belousov was chosen for the post because military spending is becoming more integral to the Russian economy. According to one intelligence expert, âthe defence minister, especially in time of war, is essentially an administrator, there to ensure that the military has the men and materiel it needs,â which makes the economistâs appointment âan unexpected but logical choice.â
Facing Russian Advance, a Top Ukrainian General Paints a Bleak Picture (NYT) Ukraineâs military is confronting a âcriticalâ situation in the countryâs northeast, facing troop shortages as it tries to repel a Russian offensive that has been advancing for several days, a top Ukrainian general said on Monday. Russian troops surged across the border last week to open a new line of attack near Kharkiv, Ukraineâs second-largest city after Kyiv, capturing at least nine settlements and villages and forcing thousands of civilians to flee. âThe situation is on the edge,â Gen. Washington and Taipei have been expanding their military cooperation in recent years amid almost daily Chinese incursions into Taiwan's air defence identification zone and drills by Chinese forces near the island. Palestinians mark 76 years of dispossession as a potentially even larger catastrophe unfolds in Gaza (AP) Palestinians on Wednesday will mark the 76th year of their mass expulsion from what is now Israel, an event that is at the core of their national struggle. But in many ways, that experience pales in comparison to the calamity now unfolding in Gaza. Palestinians refer to it as the Nakba, Arabic for catastrophe. Some 700,000 Palestiniansâa majority of the prewar populationâfled or were driven from their homes before and during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war that followed Israelâs establishment. After the war, Israel refused to allow them to return because it would have resulted in a Palestinian majority within its borders. Instead, they became a seemingly permanent refugee community that now numbers some 6 million, with most living in slum-like urban refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank. In Gaza, the refugees and their descendants make up around three-quarters of the population.
In Gaza, a hidden threat could kill Palestinians even after a cease-fire (NPR) As Palestinians venture back into areas of Gaza that have been obliterated by months of combat, international organizations and aid groups say thereâs a hidden threat: unexploded ordnance. The rule of thumb, explosives experts say, is that 10% of munitions do not detonate on impact. That means an estimated 7,500 metric tons of live munition may be scattered throughout the Gaza Strip, according to the United Nations. âItâs everything from mortars, artillery shells and grenades to improvised rockets and bombs and missiles,â says Mungo Birch, head of the U.N. Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in the Palestinian territories. âOne of the most dangerous times is when people return home.â These weapons could continue to kill and maim Palestinians even if a cease-fire eventually ends the Israel-Hamas war. How Hamas Spied on Palestinians (NYT) The Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has for years overseen a secret police force in Gaza that conducted surveillance on everyday Palestinians and built files on young people, journalists and those who questioned the government, according to intelligence officials and a trove of internal documents reviewed by The New York Times. The unit, known as the General Security Service, relied on a network of Gaza informants, some of whom reported their own neighbors to the police. People landed in security files for attending protests or publicly criticizing Hamas. In some cases, the records suggest that the authorities followed people to determine if they were carrying on romantic relationships outside marriage. The documents show that Hamas leaders, despite claiming to represent the people of Gaza, would not tolerate even a whiff of dissent. Security officials trailed journalists and people they suspected of immoral behavior. Agents got criticism removed from social media and discussed ways to defame political adversaries. Political protests were viewed as threats to be undermined. Everyday Gazans were stuckâbehind the wall of Israelâs crippling blockade and under the thumb and constant watch of a security force. Abortion is a tragic issue which has affected many in the beautiful land of South Africa. On 1 February 1997 abortion-on-demand was legalized in South Africa. By 2024 an estimated two million babies in South Africa had lost their lives through abortion, mostly with taxpayers' money. [1] This loss of life has left devastation in its wake. Nationwide demonstrations against the abortion law have swept the country over past years as pro-lifers repeatedly marched to Parliament. People from Worcester, Velddrift, Hermanus, Malmesbury, Durbanville, Belville, Klipjeville, Cape Town, Kroonstad, Bloemfontein, Durban, East London, Pretoria, as well as many others areas have protested the abortion law over the past few years. [1], [2], [3], [4]. [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13].
Protests at abortion clinics
Protests at abortion clinics have been widespread throughout the country, such as the protests at Marie Stopes Clinic in Cape Town [2] and Pretoria [9].Â
National Alliance for Life
National Alliance for Life (NAL) is a platform for pro-life organizations, churches and individuals to be heard. This vibrant platform is strongly supported by pro-lifers in South Africa and further afield. An NAL conference pamphlet affirmed that "We must take a stand against the killing of children until it (abortion) is abolished." [13]
Dr de Vos
Dr Jacques de Vos faced charges for allegedly telling a pregnant woman that 'her fetus was a human being' and that an abortion kills an unborn human, Alleged News. [14] Dr de Vos lost his employment and was banned from practising medicine, Alleged News. [14] He was only a week away from finishing his medical degree, Alleged News. [14] Protests regarding the fate of Dr de Vos spread from South Africa to Kenya, Alleged News. [15] More than 19,000 signatures from African citizens - concerned about the fate of pro-life Dr Jacques de Vos - were delivered to High Commissioner Thembela Ngculu at his Nairobi office; Alleged News. [15] In 2022, Dr de Vos was cleared to practise again after a five-year ban, Alleged News. [16]
Forced sterilisations at hospitals
In South Africa, at least 15 hospitals and 48 staff were involved in coerced or forced sterilisation of women living with HIV/Aids, Alleged News. [17] A report by the Commission for Gender Equality in South Africa investigated reported cases and found that staff at the hospitals were party to gross human rights violations, as well as those of reproductive rights, Alleged News. [17]Â
Abortion without consent
Buyiselwa Daweti said her horrific ordeal with a private hospital in Cosmo City in 2002 inspired her to fight for reproductive health rights and awareness, especially for vulnerable women sterilised against their will, Alleged News. [17]
"I had an abortion without my consent, which is in line with [forced] sterilisation, based on a lie by a doctor, who said my twins were not growing. He gave me tablets stating he wanted the twins to grow. The next day, I had a miscarriage which I thought was natural," Daweti said; Alleged News. [17]
Forced sterilisations
The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), a Chapter 9 institution, released its report on 24 February 2020Â revealing how hospitals forced and coerced women to agree to being sterilised, Alleged News. [17] The cases of violated women date back to 2001, Alleged News. [17] Some of the women made to sign sterilisation agreements while in severe pain only learned later from private gynaecologists that their fallopian tubes had been cut during labour, Alleged News. [17]Â
Learned during labour
Other women learned during labour that they would be sterilised, allegedly after hospital doctors told them women with HIV should not have children, Alleged News. [17] The CGE found that the women were made to sign forms under duress, as they were threatened with not being assisted with caesarean procedures they needed: Alleged News. [17]
Call to stop illegal abortion advertisements
Director Justin Jones noted that "you cannot drive anywhere in a South African city these days without seeing illegal posters selling prophets, potions . . . Then there are also the ones that are selling things like "quick abortions" . . . which are inevitably done by unlicensed practitioners in unsafe conditions."Â
"When the various posters are analysed, it becomes noticeably clear as to why the originator or owner uses the illegal (guerilla type) approach to advertise.
The practises they are advertising are normally illegal, and they are preying on the poor, the desperate and the marginalised." [18]
Outrage against backstreet abortions - public protest
Protest marches took to the streets in South Africa as outrage against backstreet abortions continued to grow. [19] Deputy Health Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, accompanied by Gauteng Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi and Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell, led a march against illegal and unsafe abortions, Alleged News. Dead foetuses litter the streets
Most of the numbers of unidentified infant bodies received by the Johannesburg Forensic Pathology Services (FPS) medico-legal mortuary in Braamfontein are foetuses; Alleged News. [19] They are abandoned - discarded around the city, Alleged News. [19] Foetal osteologist Roxanne Thornton works with these deceased infants, Alleged News. [19] The dead babies come in as viable foetuses (more than 26 weeks), and as non-viable foetuses (those who would not survive outside the womb), Alleged News. [19] (The viable foetuses are thus dead preborn infants of more than six-and-a-half months, Alleged News.)Â
Osteologist Thornton said many of the abandoned foetuses are illegal abortion cases, mostly stillborn and abandoned; Alleged News. [19] Osteologist Thornton said, "I work with foetal prenatal bones. The goal is to prove the case forensically. The reason I do this is because there are hardly any inquests for the dumped [foetuses] - they don't get investigated and they are forgotten. This is an injustice.
"I believe these children should have a voice. A lot are dumped just around the corner from a shelter or abortion clinic," Alleged News. [19]Â
Pro-lifer received conviction
In February 2013, Mr Peter Throp received a conviction for damaging property by placing pro-life stickers over illegal abortion stickers, Alleged News. [19] Mr Throp received sentence of a fine of R5 000 or three months imprisonment, suspended for five years, Alleged News. [19] In March 2014, the Cape Town High Court upheld Mr Throp's appeal; Alleged News. [19]
15% of maternal deaths due to abortion complications
Unsafe, illegal pregnancy terminations lead to 15% of South Africa's maternal deaths, Alleged News. [19] According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in South Africa 15% of maternal deaths are due to abortion complications, Alleged News. [19]
Abortion is legal for children in South Africa
On December 11, 1996, South Africa enacted the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act. This Act gives women of any age or marital status access to abortion services upon request during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and, in certain cases, extends access to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. [19] Currently, in South Africa, children are legally barred from drinking alcohol and from driving cars until they are 18 years of age. [19]
In South Africa, children between 12-14 years of age are being granted abortions, many of them without their parents' knowledge. [19]
