The Day After Tomorrow
Tumblr media
This is not a bad movie and I did love the family angle - as usually - but!
For a movie that's all about how science is right and politicians, money and whatnot are wrong, this movie is scientifically wrong in so many ways that it irritated me to no end. Climbing a metal ship in deep frost temperatures bare handed? They're freezing to death but their breath doesn't condense? They need to burn something to keep warm but instead of burning furniture, you know, actual wood, they burn books? If you ever tried burning a book, you know that it just does. not. burn. unless you tear it apart, page by page - or you sprinkle it with fuel. And so many other things. I was trying to ignore all the inaccuracies it but I kept going, "It doesn't work like that!"
But, well, there were also many actors that I love in this like Dennis Quaid, Nestor Serrano, Tamlyn Tomita, Sasha Roiz, Ian Holm, Adrian Lester... So, hm, there's that. Look at the pretty and ignore the rest, I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chapter 28
WHEN THE PEOPLE of the rancho gathered for vespers that night, the whispers that ran through them like breezes in the tall grass were not about Papá. Not about the humiliating defeat that the Mexican forces had suffered in Matamoros, though that had been all the Serrano family could talk about throughout the long, stifling afternoon.
Néstor’s name slipped through the gathered peones like a half-forgotten guest. It was passed from hand to hand, leaving a bitter taste in its wake. It slinked around Nena’s ankles like a snake. This is your fault, it hissed.
All Nena could see as Papá led evening prayers were the suspicious looks the peones cast at him.
Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of your actions.
I hope his ranch fails because nobody wants to work for him anymore.
(Although judging by the way that people talk about this book, that’s not going to happen.)
In that moment, she saw not her father, but the patrón of the rancho. The man who kept a strict difference between his family and the peones. All the people gathered here: the vaqueros and the shepherds, the farriers, the farmers, their wives and children. Papá kept them under his thumb, in his debt, manipulating their wages like toys on a string. He kept them beholden to him. Beholden to the land that they could never call their own because it belonged to the patrón.
Once again reminding everybody that the only thing this book is, is a commentary about is classism.
There might be Yanquis attacking the rancho. But Nena knew from the pain in her scar, prickling like a thousand needles, that there was also something much, much worse.
Chapter 28 summary: At evening mass that night, Papa gives this self-congratulatory speech. However, literally everybody is giving Papa the dirtiest look imaginable. They hate him for what he did to Nestor, and I feel like this is only the beginning. She thinks about the class divide, and how terrible her father is for intentionally keeping these people slaving for him.
Later, Nena tends to Felix’s wound. He complains that the soldiers who showed up weren’t trained in anything, so of course they either died or fled to save their own skin. He complains that the government is shitty, and that they should simply let people govern themselves.
Then, we’re subjected to TWO WHOLE PAGES of Nena wangsting about Nestor and how her shit actions led to her father abusing him. This is pointless, since we already know that she feels bad from her opinions on what happened during evening mass.
She sleeps, but wakes up to the dog barking at something outside. Yankees have come, and they’re not there to play cards. But Nena senses that there’s something much worse than white men with guns outside.
