Yankees Outdid Themselves in Series Loss, Hence Sarcasm
NYY @ KC
This series had it all: a horrendous outing by Carlos Rodón, a lack of offense by the Yanks (no surprise there), and potentially saying goodbye to veteran starting pitcher for KC, Zack Greinke.
Game 1
As mentioned before, LHP Carlos Rodón got the start for the New York Yankees versus veteran RHP Jordan Lyles and the Kansas City Royals.
The trouble for the Yankees began in the bottom of the first inning with Rodón on the hill.
Straight out the gate, 3B Maikel Garcia got a single off Rodón followed by SS Bobby Witt, Jr. getting a walk.
Next, longtime Royal and 1B Salvador Perez hit a two-run RBI 2B off Rodón, scoring Garcia and Witt, Jr. The Royals took an early 2-0 lead against the Yankees.
After that, LF Edward Olivares hit a two-run HR off Rodón, scoring Perez and himself. The Royals extended their lead to 4-0.
RF Nelson Velazquez and DH Nick Loftin then hit back-to-back 1Bs off Rodón before Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake held a conference on the mound with Rodon and C Austin Wells.
What was interesting about this exchange was that Rodón purposely squeezed himself in between Blake and Wells to turn his back toward the pitching coach.
Rodón then proceeded to shoo away Blake with his glove on his right hand. Blake wasn’t finished with what he had to say to Rodón, but the lefty pitcher continued to wave off his coach.
Rodón was fired up and frustrated with his performance during this first inning. However, despite this and Blake’s lack of experience as a coach in MLB, the southpaw’s actions were disrespectful and inexcusable.
After the heated interchange ceased, 2B Matt Duffy hit an RBI 1B off Rodón, scoring Velazquez. It was now 5-0 Royals.
After Loftin stole third base, Rodón walked C Logan Porter. Without an out recorded in the inning, Yankees manager Aaron Boone removed Rodón – who threw 35 pitches – from the game.
With the bases loaded, reliever Matt Bowman was called upon to prevent any further damage in this game. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for this righty pitcher.
CF Kyle Isbel hit a two-run RBI 2B off Bowman, scoring Loftin and Duffy. The Royals extended their lead to 7-0 versus the Yankees.
Garcia in his second at-bat and plate appearance of the first inning hit an RBI 1B off Bowman, scoring Porter from third base. It was now 8-0 Royals.
The line on Rodón was complete with all eight of his earned runs scoring.
The first out of the inning was recorded when Witt, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly off Bowman. However, a run did score with Isbel crossing home plate.
The scoreboard had another crooked number added to it with the Royals ahead of the Yankees 9-0.
After Perez hit a single – his second hit of the inning – Bowman ended the inning by retiring Olivares and Velazquez via a force-out and strikeout looking, respectively.
In the top of the bottom of the third inning, Perez grounded into a force-out with reliever Randy Vasquez on the mound. Garcia scored on this play and it became 10-0 Royals.
In the top of the fourth inning, Wells hit a three-run HR off Lyles, scoring DH Aaron Judge and 2B Gleyber Torres. The Yankees trailed the Royals 10-3.
youtube
In the top of the fifth inning, LF Everson Pereira hit an RBI ground ball for an out, scoring 3B Oswald Peraza with Lyles still pitching. The Yankees now trailed 10-4 against the Royals.
In the top of the sixth inning, Wells hit a ground ball for an out versus Lyles, scoring Judge. The deficit was cut in half with the score at 10-5 in favor of the Royals.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Witt, Jr. hit a two-run HR off reliever Keynan Middleton, who recently came off the injured list. Isbel and Witt, Jr. scored, making it 12-5 Royals.
With the Royals adding those insurance runs, they won by the score of 12-5 against the Yankees in this game.
Game 2
RHP Clarke Schmidt got the nod for the Yankees versus opening pitcher Steven Cruz and the Royals.
In the bottom of the first inning, Velazquez hit an RBI 1B off Schmidt, scoring Garcia. The Royals took a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third inning, Perez as the DH hit a solo HR off Schmidt, extending the Royals’ lead to 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, RF Oswaldo Cabrera hit an RBI 1B off reliever and bulk pitcher Alec Marsh. Torres scored and the Yankees trailed the Royals 2-1.
youtube
In the same inning, Pereira hit an RBI 1B off Marsh, scoring 1B Jake Bauers. The game was tied at 2-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, CF Estevan Florial hit an RBI 1B off reliever Collin Snider. C Kyle Higashioka scored and the Yankees led 3-2.
Later in the inning, Torres hit a two-run RBI 1B off Snider, scoring Florial and 3B-1B DJ LeMahieu. The Yankees extended their lead to 5-2 and won by this score.
Ironically in his only appearance this season, RHP Frankie Montas got a win for himself out of the bullpen.
Game 3
RHP Michael King looked to cement his role as a starter for next season for the Yankees against RHP Zack Greinke in his second stint with the Royals.
In the bottom of the second inning, RF MJ Melendez hit a solo HR off King, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Later in the same inning, 1B Nick Pratto hit an RBI 1B off King, scoring CF Dairon Blanco. The Royals extended their lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Olivares hit a solo HR off King, extending the Royals’ lead to 3-0.
Another home run was hit in this inning off King via a solo shot by Blanco, giving the Royals a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Perez as the catcher in this game hit a sac fly off reliever Jhony Brito to Cabrera in right field. Witt, Jr. scored and the Royals extended their lead to 5-0.
Before the Yankees scored any runs in the top of the sixth inning, Greinke was taken out after walking LeMahieu to start this inning.
With Greinke taking the game ball and putting it in his back pocket as a souvenir, you would think that the 39-year-old pitcher has decided to call it a career and retire.
However, Greinke didn’t announce at the start of this season that it would be his last one. Who knows for sure, right?
Anyway, fast forward to when reliever Taylor Clarke took over for Greinke in this game in the top of the sixth inning.
With runners in scoring position after Wells’ double, 3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run RBI 1B off Clarke.
LeMahieu and Wells scored with this clutch, two-out hit by IKF. The Yankees trailed the Royals 5-2 and unfortunately lost by this score.
The Yankees showed baseball fans why they couldn’t make the postseason this year. They lost a series that they should’ve won.
The Royals had over 100 losses this season and still beat the Yankees due to shaky pitching and not getting timely hits consistently.
Even though the Yankees had a winning season at 82-80, it was a shoddy winning season.
The positive attributes that I take away from this season for the Yankees are the following:
IFK resurging as a super-utility player instead of starting at SS. Hopefully, IFK and the Yankees agree to a reasonable contract for next season.
Anthony Volpe showing a glimmer of hope as the future SS with 21 HRs in his rookie year.
Aaron Judge playing respectable baseball by hitting 37 HRs even though he missed a third of the season with an unlucky and weird right-toe injury while playing against the Los Angeles Dodgers in June.
Michael King pitching well enough as a starter to secure a spot in the rotation for next season.
CF Jasson Dominguez getting called up by the Yankees in September. The Martian played eight games for the Bronx Bombers and hit four home runs before needing surgery on a torn UCL.

WASHINGTON — Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Horacio Manuel Cartes Jara (Cartes), the former President of Paraguay, and Hugo Adalberto Velazquez Moreno (Velazquez), the current Vice President, for their involvement in the rampant corruption that undermines democratic institutions in Paraguay. OFAC is also designating Tabacos USA Inc., Bebidas USA Inc., Dominicana Acquisition S.A., and Frigorifico Chajha S.A.E., for being owned or controlled by Cartes. These individuals and entities are being designated pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 13818, which builds upon and implements the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and targets perpetrators of serious human rights abuse and corruption around the world. “Treasury is committed to addressing systemic corruption around the world, even in its most entrenched forms and at the highest levels of public office,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson. “Today’s action exposes the endemic corruption undermining Paraguayan democratic institutions and highlights the pressing need for the Government of Paraguay to act in the best interest of its citizens, not line the pockets of its political elites.”    Today’s action follows the visa restrictions imposed on Cartes and Velazquez in 2022 under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs A...

Royals Take Care Of Twins.
Royals 6 Twins 1 W-Lugo (9-1) L-Ober (5-3)
The Minnesota Twins played a nice clean game and took another game from the Royals last night. The series continued tonight with Game 3 at Target Field. The Twins struck first in the second as Willi Castro lined a one-out double to right. Carlos Santana singled to center and Jose Miranda hit a long sacrifice fly to left to plate the game's first run. The Royals bounced back in the third with a Kyle Isbel lead-off single. He reached second on a groundout and Bobby Witt Jr. tied the game with a run-scoring single to right. Salvador Perez followed with an RBI double to left to put the Royals up 2-1. Later in the inning, Nelson Velazquez smoked a Bailey Ober cutter out to left-center for a two-run home run. Kansas City kept adding on in the fifth when Salvador Perez smoked a Bailey Ober fastball into the bullpens in left-center. Later, Nelson Velazquez plastered a Bailey Ober fastball out to left for a solo shot. This put the Royals up by five midway through the game. Seth Lugo ran with it through six solid innings of work. Both bullpens shut things down as Angel Zerpa and Will Smith got the game to the ninth for the Royals. Carlos Hernandez had a scoreless ninth as the Royals took their first game of the series tonight.
-Final Thoughts- Bailey Ober got knocked around again by the Royals. He went five innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Steven Okert threw a 1-2-3 seventh, Diego Castillo threw two shutout innings in his Twins debut, and Cole Sands had a scoreless ninth. Willi Castro led the way with a three-hit night. The Twins hit 1-for-11 with men in scoring position and left ten men on base. The series will conclude tomorrow night as Brady Singer faces Chris Paddack in the finale.

Griffin Conine had two doubles and drove in a run for Vancouver Tuesday.
The three Vancouver Canadians going to the Northwest League/Pioneer League All-Star Game showed why they deserved to be heading to Grand Junction, Colorado next week. Outfielders Tanner Kirwer and Griffin Conine drove in a run apiece and Cobi Johnson earned the save as Vancouver doubled up Eugene 6-3 at Nat Bailey Stadium Monday. The win gives the C’s a 6-4 series victory over the Em’s and keeps them tied for first place for the second-half North Division title with Spokane with a record of 5-3.
Brandon Polizzi kick-started the offence with the first of three hits in the third inning Tuesday.
The C’s broke out on top with two runs in the third inning against Zach Mort. Brandon Polizzi drilled a single up the middle before Kirwer laid down a bunt single to third base. Polizzi and Kirwer pulled off a double steal before Polizzi scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Vinny Capra for the game’s first run. Conine put Mort through the ringer by fouling off eight pitches before lining a double to left just out of the reach of Grant Fennell.
The Emeralds were shut down by Joey Murray for the first two innings but got to Sean Wymer in his second inning of work. Levi Jordan dropped a bunt to third to get on base before stealing second. He would score on a Luke Reynolds base rap to center. Jonathan Sierra would single to left with one out and he and Reynolds moved up another 90 feet on a wild pitch. Wymer would strand those runners by striking out Jake Slaughter and Luis Diaz looking. Wymer fell behind in the count to Diaz three balls and no strikes before ralllying to throw three straight strikes. Eugene manager Steven Lerud came out to argue after the strikeout of Diaz and he was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Andrew Clark.
Jesus Severino heads to third base after a single by Nick Podkul in the fourth inning.
Eugenio Palma took over on the mound for Eugene in the fourth and retired the first two hitters he faced before giving up back-to-back base hits to Jesus Severino and Nick Podkul to right field. An errant pickoff throw by Palma allowed Severino to score and Podkul to move to third. Polizzi followed with a infield single to first that drove in Podkul for the fourth Vancouver run.
The Emeralds chipped away with another run in the fifth off Wymer. Eric Gonzalez walked to begin the inning and scampered home on a one-out by Fennell to right field. Fennell reached third on a Jordan fly ball to right but Wymer stranded another runner 90 feet away by freezing Reynolds on a called strike three.
Will McAffer took over for Wymer in the sixth and was lit up for a leadoff home run by Nelson Velazquez that just stayed fair down the left field line to make it a one-run ball game.
The C’s got some insurance in the seventh when Polizzi singled to left, stole second and went to third on a Cam Sanders wild pitch. Kirwer cashed in Polizzi with a base hit to left to make it 5-3 Vancouver. Kirwer stole his second base of the game and would get to third on walks by Capra and Conine. Bryan Lizardo hit into a 3-6 fielder’s choice against Em’s reliever Sean Barry to score Kirwer for the second run of the inning.
Marcus Reyes pitched two shutout innings of one-hit ball and Johnson worked a perfect ninth to make sure this one went into the win column for Vancouver.
Sean Wymer (left) earned his 3rd win of the season after Joey Murray started the game with two shutout frames Tuesday.
Radar Gun Rundown
Wymer got up to 94 miles per hour and had strikeouts at 78, 91 and 78.
McAffer had a strikeout at 75 and ranged from 72-95. Reyes had strikeouts at 78 and 80 while Johnson recorded whiffs at 78 and 92.
I fell asleep on Murray’s velocities but his pitches worked as his two scoreless innings would attest to that.
Tanner Kirwer had two hits, two runs and a run batted in for the C’s Tuesday.
C-Notes
C’s left fielder McGregory Contreras and righthander Jose Espada are the Northwest League Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 23-29.
Congratulations to outfielder McGregory Contreras and pitcher Jose Espada for being named the Northwest League’s Player and Pitcher of the Week for July 23-29. Contreras hit .450 with seven extra-base hits and is a surprising omission from next week’s All-Star festivities. Espada pitched six shutout innings in a win over Eugene July 27. He is 2-3 on the season with a 3.79 ERA to go along with 49 strikeouts in 40-1/3 innings.
Both teams had issues with the home plate umpire. Vancouver manager Dallas McPherson argued a bunt laid down by Lizardo in the second inning that appeared to go foul but Gonzalez quickly reacted from behind the plate and threw down to first to get the out. McPherson would continue the argument after the half-inning was over.
Podkul made a tremendous effort on a ground ball by Sierra in the sixth inning and nearly threw him out by the seat of his pants. Polizzi made a key play from left field later in the sixth as he threw out Jake Slaughter at second for trying to stretch his single into a double. McAffer was able to get the next two hitters after that and strand Sierra at third. That made it three innings in a row that Eugene left a runner 90 feet away.
Polizzi led Vancouver’s 10-hit attack with three while Conine, Kirwer and Severino had two apiece. Conine also drew a walk to get aboard three times. Podkul had the other hits while Capra and Contreras walked. Vancouver had three walks to help offset five strikeouts and were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Murray remains unscored upon as he extended his scoreless innings streak to 16 to keep his earned run average at 0.00. He allowed just one hit and struck out one over two innings.
Marcus Reyes continues to keep his ERA below 1.00 after two shutout innings Tuesday.
Wymer gave up two runs on four hits and a walk over three frames but struck out three to help limit the damage. McAffer gave up a solo home run and two other hits but struck one in the sixth. Reyes cut his ERA down to 0.77 with one-hit relief over two innings in which he struck out two. It’s surprising his performance did not merit a berth in next week’s NWL/PL All-Star contest.  Johnson lowered his ERA to 2.25 with a shutout ninth to collect his sixth save in as many chances. C’s pitchers compiled an impressive strikeout/walk ratio of 9-1.
Cobi Johnson has not been scored upon in nine of his last 10 outings for the C’s.
The C’s are in Hillsboro to begin a five-game series. Arizona’s 2017 third round pick Matt Tabor (1-1, 4.42) is set to throw the first pitch for the Hops at 7:05 pm at Ron Tonkin Field. Lefthander Nick Allgeyer (0-0, 3.24) will start on the mound for the Canadians. The game will on CanadiansBaseball.com with Rob Fai and MiLB.TV.

FEITO NO BRASIL > PAULO VITALE
Tumblr media
