GHOSTBUSTERS: GET REAL #1-4, ANNUAL 2015
2015
By Erik Burnham, Tom Bancroft, Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, Neil Uyetake, Erica Henderson, Evan Shaner, Joe Quinones, Chirs Uminga, Tom B. Long, Shawn Lee, Otis Frampton, Sara Richard, Sean Galloway, Drew Rausch, Matthew Dow Smith, Anthony Marques, Alex Deligiannis, Erik Evensen, Jeremiah Skipper, Ester Salguero, and Juanchoo
When the "Real Ghostbusters" get transported to the "real" Ghostbusters' Earth, the two teams will start investigating how to put things back to normal, and stop the God known as Proteus from capturing them.

SCORE: 9
This one was an amazing read. Once more I am amazed on the versatility of Dan Schoening. They man can draw in any style!
But apart from the visuals, the story contains easter eggs beyond just the "real ghostbusters".

Now, to be fair. on that double splash page I had to read the wiki to figure out where some of those came from. But I was really surprised to see the Filmation Ghostbusters in the mix.
The story is simple enough, and fun. Now, I included the 2015 annual because, for some reason it tends to get bundled with this mini-series a lot. While it deals with the aftermath of "Get Real," it is not a continuation of the story.
The annual is a horror story (kind of), and it also introduced Samhain to the canon of the book.
Oh, and James Hong technically appears as the ghost from "Little trouble in Little China."

Monster House (2006) had a tie-in graphic novel?
Yeah, it did. I only found out about it by chance when reading the wiki. It was done by IDW Publishing on June 14, 2006. This would have been roughly a month before the film had its theatrical release in the U.S. on July 21, 2006.
Before we start talking about the content, let's talk about the credits. The comic consists of two stories. I will print the credits exactly as they appear.
"Skull & Bones" Written by: Joshua Dysart Art by: Simeon Wilkins Colors by: Len O' Grady
"Honor Roll" Words and Art by: Simeon Wilkins Colors by: Len O' Grady
Edited by: Kris Oprisko Designed by: Neil Uyetake Lettered by: Tom B. Long
Now, of course, I cannot post the entire work here. Sure, the comic appears to have only been printed once in 2006. Sure, it is unlikely that it will ever be reprinted, as Monster House was a single film that told its complete story and never got any sequels or spin-offs. Sure, the only way to legitimately purchase a copy these days is to buy it second-hand. Still, I could get in trouble for posting it in full here.
However, you could try searching "Monster House Graphic Novel". You may find that someone has scanned and uploaded a copy that you can read for free. You might even feel inspired to make a Tumblr post sharing some of your favorite panels from that scan. Imagine that. https://archive.org/details/monster-house-graphic-novel
Anyway, before you go past the "read more". I recommend you obtain the graphic novel and read it for yourself to get the full experience.
The first story, "Skull & Bones", alternates between scenes that take place at the same time as the movie and scenes that took place 20 years earlier. Our protagonist for the evening in both timelines is "Bones". You remember him right?
We all remember the scene between him and Zee where he's messing with her, she gets sick of him, and she kicks him out. Mind you, the movie showed it from DJ's POV, who couldn't see much from behind the couch.
The comic lovingly recreates the scene from the front of the couch.
Comic made him more of an ugly sonuvabitch than the film did.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Remember, he did have his back-story that he talked about during the film. Now, we get to see it.
One day, 20 years ago, long before his nose was quite so big, Bones was flying his kite. The kite's name was "Awesome Kite".
But then, it all goes wrong. Awesome lands on Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn. Bones knows well and good that Nebbercracker will steal his kite if he doesn't get it back quickly. Worse, he has to listen to Nebbercracker's marital problems.
Mr. Nebbercracker is calm and reasonable about the whole thing, just like in the film.
Back in the present-day, we have Skull and Bones showing that they care about making children happy, or maybe they are just desperate for a gig. Either way, they are playing a gig at the local children's hospital.
However, they parked in a hand-capped spot. Well, nobody's perfect.
Lester very nearly ends the story early, but our heroes are saved in the nick of time.
Oh look, its the little girl from the movie's intro. Why does her face look like that?
Okay, let's go back to just after Zee kneed him the stomach and sent him packing. We know that he went to take his anger out on Nebbercracker's house.
Our idiot hero is easily lured into the house by Awesome Kite, who is made to float in the doorway.
Then, he gets eaten.
He'll be fine though. Everyone remembers the ending of Monster House, right? We got a montage of all the characters who were eaten by the house climbing out of the ruins. The children in the audience were re-assured that the house never actually killed anyone.
Yeah, no, the comic confirms that Constance isn't the only skeleton in the basement. I spy a mail carrier, a door-to-door salesman or special agent from ACME, the milk man, someone who was just shoveling the sidewalk, and at least one dog. At least I don't see any child skeletons.
Still, our plucky hero continues his search-and-rescue operation. At last, he reaches Awesome Kite.
Before, he can reach it though, let's flash back to 20 years. While Bones is sulking over his kite, Zee is having a tea party. Lovely.
Look, I don't care about the monster house anymore. This scene of Zee obliterating the dolls with a damn weed-wacker is amazing.
Bones meets up with his friend Skull, and we get our musical number.
Afterwards, Skull and Bones go on their mission to retrieve Awesome. They don't have J.D's level of planning however. Lester, who would go on to become the skinny cop, discovers them.
I know I've been making fun of the story, but it does show us an important angle that we don't get in the movie.
We see Nebbercracker frustrated with Constance's actions, as well as all of the effort he puts into keeping Constance's true nature a secret.
I want to share one particularly impactful line.
"You keep saying you love me! But you don't know how to love!"
Then, he tries to leave.
And she doesn't let him leave.
No, he returns to stare into the fire.
Yeah, he kisses her on the Mantle. Bones and Skull don't understand how tragic this whole scene is.
And now, we're back to business as usual. Nebbercracker goes after the kids, and Constance looks ready to eat them herself.
And now we're back to present-day Bones and near the end of the movie. The house rips itself out of its foundation. While it hurries away, probably to go eat three kids, Skull is able to climb out to safety.
Skull, the twist villain of the comic, has stolen his girl.
Or, maybe she was just pretending to date Skull to make Bones jealous? Maybe they're a polycule now?
No matter what happened, it looks like Zee lost in the end. That's what she gets for breaking that plant pot and blaming it on DJ.
I managed to hit the image limit before I got to the second story. However, that one doesn't really have much to do with Monster House. "Final Roll" tells us that Skull and Bones play DnD. Its really just Bones walking away from the game after refusing to make a roll. Skull badgers him for weeks until he throws the die into Nebbercracker's lawn. I may make a second post with highlights from that story, but the first story was definitely the more important one to cover.
I'm glad that I got to read this comic. It was alot of fun. The original movie is a masterpiece in presenting such dark themes to children. And then, the graphic novel expanded upon it. We got to see that Nebbercracker was not always able to keep everyone safe from Constance. We got to see how much of a toll the whole unfair situation took on him. We got a peek at Bone's, Skull's, and Zee's childhoods. We got to see Zee destroy a bunch of plastic dolls with a damn weed whacker.
If you haven't read it, go read it. My post isn't going to be the same as reading the whole thing.

Transformers Spotlight #5: Ultra Magnus
Read Date: July 18, 2023 Cover Date: January 2007 ● Writer: Simon Furman ● Art: Robby Musso ● Colorist: Kieran Oats ● Letterer: Neil Uyetake ● Editor: Chris Ryall ◦ Dan Taylor ●

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read:

● they can do a lot more with their holomatter than I thought! (I exclaim as though it's not a fictional comic book) ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: On Zull, Ultra Magnus apprehends the Decepticon criminal Swindle, blowing away Karzai Lorcha's forces who are protecting him. However, Swindle decides to make Ultra Magnus a deal: his freedom in exchange for Scorponok's location. Magnus realizes that Scorponok's capture would be far more important than Swindle's, and he knows that he would easily be able to catch Swindle the next time he got himself in trouble, then he could still get him to Decepticon High Justice. But is it enough for Magnus to violate the rules he enforces? Ultimately, Ultra Magnus agrees.
The information leads him to Nebulos, where he finds that Scorponok is using businessman Mo Zarak's corporation, the Zarak Consortium, as a front for his own activities. Using a holomatter disguise, Ultra Magnus penetrates into the very heart of the facility and discovers what appears to be a Nebulan whose body has been almost entirely re-engineered with Cybertronian technology; in short, a transforming Nebulan. Shortly after discovering this, his hologram is detected and destroyed, and Ultra Magnus reenters the facility via less subtle means. He encounters a group of Cybertronian drones—which are lacking heads. Defeating the drones, Magnus realizes that something serious is going on, and heads into the underground facility.
Once underground, Ultra Magnus offers Scorponok a chance to surrender, which is interrupted by an attack. Although Scorponok's usual modus operandi is to flee when discovered, he says that what he is working on is something "breathtaking", and Magnus cannot be allowed to interfere. In the ensuing battle, Mo Zarak, afraid that all his work will be lost, tries to stop Scorponok and is shot in the crossfire, revealing cybernetic components in his body. Ultra Magnus takes advantage of Scorponok's distraction at having seemingly killed Mo Zarak and shoots the Decepticon in the face. Scorponok, damaged and distraught over the loss of his research, flees through an artificial wormhole generator.
Twenty-nine stellar cycles later on Buras, Ultra Magnus finds himself taking Swindle into custody once more. As Swindle once again tries to bargain his way out of trouble, Ultra Magnus wonders just how many compromises he'll make in order to get Scorponok.

GHOSTBUSTERS VOL. 2 #1-20
2013-2014
By Erik Burnham, Dan Schoening, Luis Antonio Delgado, Andrew Harmon, Evan Shaner, Samuel Plata, Blair D. Shedd, Felipe Torrent, Ester Salguero, Erik Evensen and Neil Uyetake
The original Ghostbusters disappear and it is up to a new team to fill up the void left by their absence.
But upon their return, things start acceleration into a conflict between two Sumerian deities that could require a human sacrifice... from the heart of the team.
SCORE: 8
While the quality of this volume is similar to the first one, I have to say that my level of engagement with it suffered from time to time, especially in the first half of it. And the only thing I can really point out for it, is that the original team stopped being together most of the time. One obvious reason was the marriage of Winston... an essential distraction for this story to work as a whole.
Some classic characters left out from the first volume, like Louis and Dana come back... but to me, who still hasn't read all the pre-volume one mini-series, the reasons for them being away are a bit mysterious. They do explain why they happened, but I felt like I was missing backstory with them.
Overall the story wasn't as consistent in engagement as the first volume, but it does provide some cool moments you will remember.
As for the art, there are a bit more guest artists in this volume, right around the time my interest was waning. At this point I think Dan Schoening is a must have for this book. His style may be cartoonish (as in editorial cartoons), but you get the idea immediately of who he is drawing.
Next stop for the Ghostbusters will be their crossover with the TMNT, which I already covered in this blog.

Transformers: Ironhide #4 Any Old Iron
Read Date: July 22, 2023 Cover Date: August 2010 ● Writer: Mike Costa ● Art: Casey Coller ● Colorist: Joana Lafuente ● Letterer: Neil Uyetake ● Editor: Andy Schmidt ●

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● that’s a lot of Insecticons ● jaysus holee fuk shitballz that guy’s HUGE O_O

● Metroplex <3 I think I’ve only come across him once. forgot how big he is! like… this giant black cube? that’s the tip of his finger

● Sunstreaker <3 ● aw, you can’t just leave Ironside behind ● 👏👏👏
Synopsis: On Cybertron, Ironhide is tearing his way through a mass of Insecticon swarm when his rifle is destroyed, forcing him to resort to his fists. As the creatures surround him, he calls Alpha Trion for help and advice, but the crazy old Autobot merely suggests he improvise. With one of the swarm having torn off Ironhide's battery pack, the Autobot draws his sidearm and fires into the battery at point-blank range, causing a tremendous explosion that wipes out the swarm in the immediate vicinity. Considering that improvisation just isn't his strong suit, Ironhide runs from the carnage until he spots a crashed Autobot cruiser.
Smashing his way inside and killing the current inhabitants of the derelict ship, Ironhide restores power to the remaining weapons, then blasts the approaching swarm to smithereens. Unfortunately, even this display of firepower isn't enough to hold back the monstrosities, who eventually flank the ship's cannons and chew through the hull. Ironhide sets off the self-destruction on the downed Autobot starship and ejects, destroying most of the remaining swarm in another huge explosion. However, Ironhide's luck has run out: Without weapons and completely surrounded, he is gradually overwhelmed and will be defeated. Alpha Trion finally gives orders to retreat when Ironhide reports that there are perhaps two hundred of the swarm left. As he runs, Ironhide comments that the crazy old kook better have a good plan.
Then a gigantic robot smashes the remaining swarm into a pulp.
Alpha Trion and his aide appear, explaining that the giant Autobot is Metroplex, Alpha's guardian. An exasperated Ironhide demands to know why he had to risk his neck when such a powerful Autobot could have effortlessly destroyed the swarm on his own. As Metroplex transforms into vehicle mode, Alpha Trion explains that there were simply too many for the lumbering giant to deal with, and they would have eaten their way into his vital processors, and obviously, the great Alpha Trion couldn't fight off the swarm. He then reveals a newly repaired (albeit confined to a hover chair) Sunstreaker, who marvels at being in the presence of the great Alpha Trion and questions if Ironhide really doesn't remember anything for the past few million years. When Ironhide asks what they will do next, Alpha reveals that he will be leaving Cybertron, while Ironhide stays behind to clean up rogue colonies of remaining Insecticons. Leaving an experimental recharge fuel cell with Ironhide, Alpha also reveals that Sunstreaker will be coming along with him, as the latter has had some unique experiences with the human race.
Of course, Ironhide professes ignorance of events he doesn't remember, leading Alpha Trion to condescend that perhaps Ironhide should make a list of all the things he doesn't understand, which will more than pass the time it takes Alpha's group to arrive at Varas Centralus. Fed up with the crazy old man's superior attitude and his callous treatment, Ironhide snaps and decks him, to the shock of Sunstreaker and Alpha's aide. An indignant Alpha Trion snaps that his guardian is as big as a city, and Ironhide counters that he just killed the equivalent population of a city, so which one of them should be afraid? Calming down, Alpha explains that a soldier like Ironhide would just get in the way, because where he's going will not require the skills of a warrior. As for what Alpha had been doing all this time, he and Metroplex had been processing Cybertron's atmosphere, removing the deadly toxins in the air and much of the deadly radiation, efforts which saved the Autobots lives when they were marooned on the dead planet. Knowing that Ironhide wouldn't remember since his resurrection, Alpha emphasizes that Ironhide is merely a small playing piece in a very large game, and that he shouldn't throw his life away by taking on a task bigger than he can understand.
At that, Sunstreaker reveals he is staying put with Ironhide. Alpha tries to reason that Ironhide wouldn't know how to fix his leg, but Sunstreaker says that he's made a lot of selfish choices for which he is not proud, and that if Ironhide still has work to do on Cybertron, work that would benefit the Autobots, he needs to be a part of that. Exasperated, Alpha Trion comments that they shouldn't blame him if they both go stir-crazy and kill each other, because he knows that being alone does funny things to one's mind. As Alpha leaves, Ironhide stops him and asks how he knew he was going to be killed. Trion brushes off the question, saying that given Ironhide's tendency to dive head-first into battle and throw himself in the path of weapons fire to protect other Autobots, his death was an inevitability. Boarding Metroplex, Alpha remarks that Ironhide should look on the bright side: He just saved an entire planet. The only other Autobot who could say that is… himself.
After Alpha leaves, Sunstreaker tries to confess to Ironhide about the horrible things he did that the latter doesn't remember. However, needing to reflect upon recent events, Ironhide requests that he be filled in later, given all the time they will have together, and Sunstreaker reluctantly agrees. The old, tired Autobot soldier wanders off into the distance, finding a place to be alone with his thoughts.
