Back Comb to the Future
HAIRSPRAY Birmingham Hippodrome, Tuesday 17th September 2024 I have lost count of how many times I have seen this musical. It seems to tour and tour non-stop, filling auditoria wherever it goes. As soon as the curtain goes up, I’m reminded why it is irresistible. The score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman is packed with great tunes and witty lyrics. The bangers just keep coming. And…

YOUNG MEDICINE @Young_Medicine #Synthwave #MetalCore #SingleReview #HoldOnToAnything
YOUNG MEDICINE, a rising dark-synthwave rock band from Kansas City, Missouri, draws the best from various rock genres to create a carefully crafted musical identity that resists easy groupification. Pummel-slamming double-bass beats and crunching guitar riffs are blasted-out, while choruses combine with shimmering retro synth tones for an amazing fusion of aural ideas. Young Medicine, who have…

Hello Neil!
I am currently reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane (illustrated by the magnificent Elise Hurst). The writing of the main character's personality and perception of the world as a child seems very personal to me (I suppose most things are, but this seems particularly so). Did you put a lot of yourself into this character? If so, does that feel vulnerable?
Hope you have a wonderful day!
I did, and yes, very much so.

Most child abductor fables are about kids being lured away with sweets, playtime, indulgence, unlimited freedom. Those things all come and backfire, because it's important to teach kids that their parents know better for them. Neil Gaiman's Other Mother is a prime example: give the child everything the want, including love, but not what they need. Mia is a different kind of horror story, because Mia is a better parent than most parents. She's not a fable about someone abducting your child to do them harm, she's a fable about someone abducting your child to do them more right than you ever could.

July 14th 1798 saw the United States' Consulate open in Edinburgh.
A measure of the growing confidence of the newly-independent United States was the large number of consulates it established during the closing years of the eighteenth century. President John Adams appointed the first U.S. Consul to Scotland on July 14, 1798. The Consul was Harry Grant from South Carolina - an appropriate choice, considering that state's strong Scottish heritage. The first known address for the Consulate was 1 James' Place, adjoining Leith Links -- the street now known as Links Gardens.
The second Consul, Joel Hart of New York, took over in 1818. Almost immediately, he moved to London to work as a physician, returning to America within five years. He held the post of Consul for Leith for sixteen years, as the U.S. State Department was unaware of his departure. Indeed, it seems that his only official act was to appoint a Vice Consul, who was left to conduct the affairs of the Consulate. This first Vice Consul was Robert Grieve, a local ship chandler with premises on the shore of Leith.
The next Consul, John Broadfoot, was also a local man, belonging to a firm of general agents and ship brokers in Leith. Likewise, his successor was a Leith merchant and agent, James McDowall, an American, from Ohio. He was succeeded in 1861 by another American with a Scottish sounding name - Neil McLachlan from Indiana, who signed himself "United States Consul for Leith and its Dependencies".
After fifty-six years in Leith, the U.S. Consulate crossed into Edinburgh in 1854, but it moved back to Leith in 1861. Ten different homes scattered around Leith followed, though the Consulate finally settled in Edinburgh in 1883.
It moved into its present premises on the stately Regent Terrace, pictured below in 1951. Seven consuls appointed since the 1990s -- Bobette Orr, Julie Moyes, Cathy Hurst, Liane Dorsey, Cecile Shea, Lisa Vickers and Dana Linnet, have been women, that run was broken in 2021 when Jack Hillmeyer became Consul General, U.S. Consulate General Edinburgh
Jack arrived in Edinburgh in August that year after serving as Deputy Consul General in Karachi, Pakistan, his record also show he also served in Brussels, Pretoria, Kabul and Milan.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman | review
Stars: ★★★★★
Summary: A middle-aged man drives to the pond at the end of the lane where he used to live and recalls forty-year old memories of his childhood. A dark fairytale about childhood, friendship, and the bittersweetness of it all being over.
also posted on storygraph
Neil Gaiman has a way with words that I envy. Not only does his writing flow, but his descriptions are just enough for my imagination to run wild. This book is a twisted fantasy that cover up a horror story underneath. I have never underlined as many things as I have in this book. The descriptions were constantly inflicting something in me. I will also say that reading this with Elise Hurst's illustrations created an even darker and eerie atmosphere that made the book come to life. They were vague and dark, but somehow exactly what I had imagined myself. It's like a nostalgic fairytale I don't actually want to re-experience, but I know it's what made me who I am. I don't think I've ever read anything that has the same grasp of what childhood entails as this book does.
It's one of those books that I will never be able to describe to someone, but it will stay with me for a long time. It's definitely my favorite Gaiman book so far.

BOOK REVIEW: REBIRTH OF THE BLUES, The Rise Of Chelsea Football Club In The Mid-1980s by Neil Fitzsimon (2023)
This is such a great book on a pivotal period in “The Story Of The Blues” from near relegation to the Third Division to promotion back to the First.
Welsh Manager, John Neal, took over from “World Cup Winner” and English-man Geoff Hurst in 1981 and quickly demonstrated an innate ability to put a new football team together within just three Division Two seasons thanks to having a very keen eye for a bargain buy with potential to be realised.
In a sense, Neal raided Scotland and Wales as well as depths of the English lower leagues which saw the following additions (in alphabetical order): Kerry Dixon (Reading); Joey Jones (Wrexham); Eddie Niedzwiecki (Wrexham); Nigel Spackman (Bournemouth); David Speedie (Darlington) and Micky Thomas (Stoke City) and others sign on the dotted line.
This new Chelsea blend finished champions ‘83/’84 and were back in the Big Time.
This is author, Neil Fitzsimon’s, third book on Chelsea as he compares and contrasts his own growing pains alongside the ups and downs of his team.
REBIRTH OF THE BLUES, an illustrated paperback, is published by PITCH on 3 April, 2023.
Rating: 10/10
