My first Nålbinding Hat is finished!
Tumblr media
Yarn: Ístex Léttlopi in colourways 1407 Pine Green and 1411 Sun Yellow
Stitch: Korgen (Finnish 1+2 F1)
This one took a while bc of the big head it's supposed to fit on, the thin-ish yarn, and i did the extra step of tensioning the loop behind the thumb - not to the needle, but sorta around/to my finger tip? It's not as precise as tensioning to the needle, but i think I have developed a good enough feeling for it to have an even texture in the end.
If you look closely you can actually see at the top when I started the tensioning!
This has been washed and dried and the ends weaved in, and it will soon go to my friend who introduced me to nålbinding 5 years ago ^_^

I have made a tiny and borderline useless nalbound pouch. It's so small because I only had a certain amount of that yarn, and I won yarn chicken to finish the drawstring holes row with literally 1 inch to spare. The cards that I eventually want to turn into tablet weaving cards are in it now.

anyone have any explanations on how to use stitch markers with nålbinding/needlebinding - I can't figure it out and it's getting really frustrating

I'm so excited to let you know that the National Museum of Denmark's online exhibition of Archaeological Puzzles in a Museum is now open! I was honored to write Case study 8 on the fringed nalbound sock in their collection.

So I spun some Coburger Fuchs
and plied it into my first "true" 3ply, like this
Tumblr media
And I love it! I love touching it and this particular combed top spun like a dream.
The bobbin I plied on to then was ✨✨✨ Full ✨✨✨ xD
Tumblr media
And the resulting cake - a kaiju as big as my hand!
Tumblr media
And since I've been itching to needlebind my own socks for a while, i scoured the internet for inspiration and found it in this blogpost from Bert at needlebinding.com:
I also learned how to do the straight start in another one of Bert's video:
youtube
And I also found what's my new favourite way of starting a needlebind project: the ✨✨✨ Mouse Ear Start ✨✨✨!
youtube
So here's the toes of my new socks ^_^
Tumblr media
(yes, I've wisened up after my wrist warmers that i have made 2-3 years apart and make the 2 socks simultaneously now. xD)
These are gonna be super warm! and I hope, supercomfy, too!

I've been doing this on Instagram, but turns out I hate that app, so let's see how posting crafts on Tumblr will turn out 😅
I am currently making some gloves for my cousins birthday. Knitting would have been not enough work I guess, so I decided to use an ancient Roman needle binding technique. Looks the same as knitting, but takes at least ten times as long 🤣

Hey, you! Unfortunately, you're doing Too Many fibre crafts. It has been decided that you must choose only one to continue doing. Each of these categories should be interpreted as broadly as possible (for example, sewing definitely includes quilting).
You can pick up other additional crafts not listed here, but out of these 6, 5 have to go.

my first ever attempt at an inset heel! also my first ever attempt at working a spiral inwards instead of outwards. closing it was a bit tricky but I think I managed okay. there were some gaps in the innermost stitches when I finished, despite me keeping the tension pretty high for the girth of this yarn, but I just wove the tail through the holes and it filled in pretty nicely.
"inset heel" isn't a technical term and I didn't find anything relevant when I googled it, but just in terms of adjective-noun combos it's the best way I can think to describe what I'm doing here. if you want a better breakdown of how I worked this, it's basically the in-the-round variant of "heel type C" as described here: https://www.shelaghlewins.com/reenactment/naalbinding/sock_construction.htm (accessed 12/20/23). that's the one in figure 9. I didn't quite follow these directions, so what do I know, but they seem like good directions!
