'Doctor Who has been visibly struggling for nearly a decade. Viewing figures started a decline in the Peter Capaldi era, and the lacklustre scripts of the Jodie Whittaker era meant time was up for many fans.
But the show's getting a major facelift, and in returning showrunner Russell T Davies the BBC have the man who wrote some of its greatest-ever episodes with the likes of Rose Tyler in the Tardis. Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will soon be piloting the time machine, but the sci-fi classic needed something to hook fans of the 2000s series back in - and has brought in the big guns with David Tennant reprising his role as the Doctor.
If you haven't watched an episode of Doctor Who since David Tennant said farewell in 2010, you'd be able to pick it right back up here with The Star Beast - the first of three specials marking his return to the show. A spaceship crash-lands on London and the Doctor is called into action - but why is Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) back in his life, and why is there (as she asks) "a bloody martian in the shed"?
Within minutes of the opening titles, Tennant is running about and ranting his way through technobabble just like the good old days. He and Catherine Tate slot effortlessly, instantly, and brilliantly back into their roles, and have the same chemistry that made them so unbelievably watchable when they first appeared on our screens.
Make no mistakes - this is a treat for the fans who were raised on the 2000s series, in the same way Sarah Jane Smith's return in 2006's School Reunion was a nod to those who spent the 1970s hiding behind the sofa from Genesis of the Daleks. It's a big, silly, geeky romp and never really pretends it's trying to be anything else.
No spoilers, but it'll have the Doctor Who nerds in your family jumping up and down on the sofa with glee - both at little references to the Doctor Donna's old adventures and at the new and improved versions of [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. We said no spoilers...
It's admittedly not a perfect episode by any means, and some parts are frustratingly blighted by the issues that have dragged the show down in recent years. It's Doctor Who, and in a sci-fi world constantly rewriting itself with time travel and revealing new bits of its own canon, there's never really an expectation that everything will make perfect sense and you can forgive a bit of clunky exposition.
But some of the episode's biggest plot points come off as surprisingly trite and ill-thought-out. Similarly, Russell T Davies has always woven progressive storylines and diverse characters into his prose - here, though, the attempts to do so are frustratingly ham-fisted (even if well-intentioned and, in principle, welcome).
But the impact of Davies' return is decidedly and instantly a positive. Back at the helm after flexing his sci-fi muscles with 2019's Years and Years and delivering one of the past decade's great character pieces with It's a Sin, it's a complete given he'll write jokes that actually land and emotional beats with some genuine oomph to them.
Donna's relationship with her daughter Rose (Yasmin Finney), for instance, is genuinely sweet and is the perfect step forward in Donna's life where we find her: without her memories of the Doctor and a good 15 years into domestic life. Her mum Sylvia, despite having softened from the constantly-haranguing busybody she was in the earlier series, is as hilarious as ever and it's not long before she and David Tennant are trading barbed words again.
In short, it's nice to be able, once again, to assume that an episode of Doctor Who will be fun, rather than sit through the last five minutes of Countryfile praying you aren't about to be bored silly for the best part of an hour. Just as the worst episodes of Doctor Who feel like they drag on for hours and hours, this one zips along and is gone in a flash like the very best. Bug-eyed monsters, spaceships in London and Catherine Tate yelling at people - this is Doctor Who as you know and love it, but with shinier CGI, better cameras and jokes about pronouns.
David Tennant said on The One Show that this first special was "the world of Doctor Who that you'll recognise," but the second is "unlike any episode of Doctor Who ever done before". Eagle-eyed fans will tell you that between two trailers, endless online clips, and a string of interviews, posters and previews, we know next to nothing about the second of Tennant and Tate's trio of specials, Wild Blue Yonder.
As the credits roll on The Star Beast, there's a sense that show's creators have kept the cards close to their chest with the first 60th anniversary special. It'll well and truly whet your appetite, though - and there's clearly a lot more to come.'

Same Love
Pairing: Ncuti Gatwa x OMC (Jasper)
Plot summary: Whilst on the set of Doctor Who, Ncuti realises that his former co-star from "Sex Education" and "Barbie", Jasper Harrison is casted as the 15th Doctor's potential love interest, Emerson. Jasper is being portrayed by Jonathan Bailey (from Bridgerton) in this fic.
Warnings: Eventual smut, fluff.
Author's note: This first chapter is in Ncuti's point of view. The POV will change throughout each chapter between Ncuti and Jasper though.
Ncuti's POV:
When I met Jasper for the first time -- on the set of Sex Education -- he knew that I was going to cause so much chaos for him.
Not in a bad way, of course.
The second Jasper saw the smirk on my face, he knew that the two of us were going to be trouble together. The rest of the cast and crew knew it as well.
But now, I was on the set of Doctor Who, playing the new Doctor obviously. He heard my laughter when I was talking to Millie and Callie -- the person who was playing Lindy in ‘Dot & Bubble’ -- and of course I noticed him walking on set, in his costume for that particular episode.
“Jasp! Babes!” I called out to him as he smiled softly, turning around to face me. I walked over to him, hugging Jasper as tightly as I could. “Hello to you too Ncuti.” Jasper said, his bright smile was still on his face, as he hugged me back. “You two know each other already?” I then heard Millie’s voice again as I put an arm around her after she came over to introduce herself to Jasper. “Yeah… What, since about 2019?” I said to Jasper, checking to see if I was correct with my dates. “Yep.”
Millie could see the sexual tension between myself and Jasper, even if she didn’t know that me and Jasper played love interests in Sex Education. I noticed her raise an eyebrow, and I gave her the same in return.
Jasper was completely oblivious to the two of us silently interacting with each other. And there was silence between the three of them, until I broke it.
“Anyways! Millie, this is Jasper. We first met on Sex Education.” “Hi, nice to meet you Millie.” Jasper kept on smiling as he shook Millie’s hand. “And yeah, believe it or not, we played love interests on that show.” “Really? Ncuti, you never told me that!” Millie lightly smacked me on the arm, to which I playfully said to her, ‘Ow!’ “Well, it never came up, did it?” I retorted back at Millie.
‘Why did he look so good?’ I thought to himself, as I was obviously checking Jasper out. Millie was smiling to herself. But I didn’t notice it, as well as the fact that Jasper was equally checking me out as well.
“And the two of you played… love interests in the show?” Millie hesitantly asked, looking between both myself and Jasper. “In season 4? Yes, we did.” I nodded before Jasper added on, “I was in season 3 but my character Aron only met Eric then, and the writers didn’t want to develop that relationship just yet. But Eric was also with Adam at the time as well.” “Wow! But, those seasons came out recently. How come you two ‘ave known each other since 2019?” Millie raised an eyebrow, as we all heard her own accent clear as day.
Jasper started to laugh, shaking his head whilst I put my hand on his shoulder. I laughed out loud.
“Well, it’s a funny story actually. Jasper was my acting coach throughout season 1.” I explained to Millie. “Acting coach?” Millie chuckled to herself. “You don’t need an acting coach!” “He did for Sex Education.” Jasper explained to Millie. “Ncuti wasn’t comfortable with all the sex scenes he had to do with Callum in the future. So, I helped him out with it.”
I agreed with what Jasper was saying, as I remembered the first time I met him.
“Yeah, I guess you could say he was my ‘acting gay’ coach.” I then chuckled softly, smirking slightly. “I think the better term for that is intimacy coach, Ncuti. There is no such thing as that.” Jasper said back at him, trying not to laugh at my choice of words. “Meh. Tomato, tomato.” I casually said, making all of us laugh out loud.
Millie then realised exactly where she recognised Jasper from, besides Barbie of course as she gasped out loud.
“Wait, weren’t you in Call Me By Your Name? With Timothee Chalamet?” Millie asked Jasper, slightly shocking myself with how she recognised Jasper like that, as my head nearly went into whiplash by how fast I looked at Millie. “Oh my God, I loved that movie! You two were so good in that!” “Aww, thank you Millie! I loved you in Corrie! My mum and I used to watch it all the time!” Jasper complimented back at her, with a bright smile. “Thank you!” Millie said back to Jasper. “And…?” I trailed off, interrupting their nice conversation.
Jasper and Millie both looked over at me as I said that. Jasper raised an eyebrow at me and gave me a ‘really?’ look.
“What?” I said with a confused look on my face. “Don’t I get a compliment like that?” “No! I’m not complimenting you on anything! I’ve been in Sex Ed, Barbie and now Doctor Who with you. I don’t need to!” Jasper said to me, trying not to laugh. “EXCUSE ME?!” I shouted out, pretending to take offence to what Jasper said, and putting a hand on my chest. My accent slipped out, and I noticed Jasper blushing at that. “I’ve been in more than that.”
Jasper scoffed out loud.
“Name one more thing you’ve been in, other than the three I just mentioned then.” He crossed his arms at me and I scoffed playfully, like what we always did on the set of Sex Education. “Masters of the Air, duh.” “Yeah, in one episode.” Jasper retorted at me. “It was actually two, but I’ll let you off on that one.” I smiled and began to laugh again, Jasper laughing with me whilst Millie was standing there, smiling at us. “And actually,” My Scottish accent, again slipping in and out of my London accent. “I sang in the first Christmas special of my Doctor Who series, thank you very much. Where’s my compliments on that?” “It’s called ‘knowing you since Sex Education’ as you used to sing all the time.”
I scoffed out loud, obviously playing along with the fake argument that me and Jasper were having.
“There’s no pleasing you sometimes!” Clearly my Eric personality -- which was basically me, in a nutshell -- was showing, and both Jasper and Millie, who had obviously seen clips of myself playing as Eric, knew that. “ANYWAYS--” I began to change the subject. “I am disappointed in you, Jas.”
Jasper pulled a face with me as I slightly tilted my head at him, crossing my arms as well. “Why are you disappointed in me?” “Cause you never told me about this!” I said back to him, gesturing towards Jasper being in costume and literally being on set.
Jasper scoffed out loud this time.
“Like you were gonna tell me about this, Doctor.” Jasper then retaliated back at me, which made me gasp out loud. “How could I? I was waiting until the Barbie premiere to tell you.” “Yeah? And you didn’t tell me about it there, did you?” “I--” I sighed softly. “I guess I didn’t have enough time to tell you face-to-face. And also, yes I know I could’ve called or texted you. But I was busy at the Oscars.” “Oh yeah, by the way, where was my invite to that exactly?”
I raised an eyebrow at Jasper, knowing that I invited him there to perform with Ryan Gosling and the rest of the Kens there.
“I invited you! I sent you the invite! It must’ve gotten lost in the mail. Y’know how the American postal service works. Also, you must’ve been busy filming for Fellow Travellers.” I told him. “Right, blame the postal service for the lost invite.” Jasper then smiled and it made me smile as well. Millie went back over to Callie, so I was only with Jasper. I chuckled softly before hearing his voice again. “It’s good to see you again, Ncuti.” I heard Jasper softly say to me. “You too babes.” I replied back to him.
We both smiled at one another before hugging each other.
“So, I’m guessing you caught up on what happened in Doctor Who, right?” Jasper asked me as we both pulled away, to which I hesitated for a moment, trying to think if I had done that. It wasn’t a requirement -- that I know of, at least -- but I have watched some of the NuWho episodes, especially David Tennant and Matt Smith’s. And of course the anniversary specials.
“Uh, y… yes?” I replied back to him, stuttering my every word with uncertainty. “I’m guessing that means no? Hesitation always means no.” “Jasper, you know I don’t read the script when I audition! I didn’t do that for Eric!” I retorted back at him, as I watched Jasper raise an eyebrow. “Yes, but you still did research for the role, didn’t you?” “Well, not particularly, no?”
Jasper sighed as I cleared my throat.
“I should’ve done, right?” “It’s fine. I mean you didn’t have to, but if we’re going to be love interests again, then you might’ve had to do some research on my character at least.”
My eyes widened at what Jasper had told me.
‘Since when did the Doctor have a love interest, besides Sarah-Jane and River Song? And technically Jack Harkness…?!’ I thought to myself. “I’m sorry… WHAT?!”
“Yeah… Well, my character had quite a thing for some of the Doctors’ incarnations, especially 13, and Russell has been thinking of bringing Emerson back. But also to let these incarnations fall in love with each other.” “Like… in this episode?” “Well, not particularly. It might not happen in this series, but there are subtle clues to Emerson’s feelings towards 15.” Jasper explained to me. “Were you not told that?”
I had to think again if Russell or any of the cast or crew had told me about this.
“I don’t think so. I mean they told me I’d be kissing Jonathan Groff in the Regency episode, but that’s it.” I noticed Jasper’s dark brown eyes widened at that fact. “Wait… what? Russell got Jonathan into this? How?!” “I don’t know, but I know he can’t stay for long. He’s doing a play at the same time and he’s got time off from rehearsals and everything.” “Damn.”
There was a slight moment of silence before Jasper cleared his throat.
“So, we’re filming ‘Dot & Bubble’ right?” “Yes. And we’ll only be in, what? 2-3 scenes for 73 Yards? That one is more Ruby-centred.” I tilted my head curiously as to what Jasper was going with this. “And that means, we won’t be on set until the next episodes. Which are?” “Space Babies and Boom. Then it would be The Devil’s Chord and Rogue, and then it’s the last 2 episodes of the series. The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death.” I explained to Jasper, wondering what was going on inside of his head. “Why are you asking this exactly?” I then decided to ask him.
Jasper shrugged his shoulders.
“No reason.” Jasper eventually said to me, to which I raised an eyebrow at him. “Bullcrap!” As Russell forbade me to curse whilst in costume, Jasper raised an eyebrow at that. I rolled my eyes. “I-I can’t swear whilst I’m in costume, okay? It’s as simple as that. Can’t say much more than that.” “Right… wait, you can say sex though?” “Only if I’m talking about the show Sex Education. That’s it. That’s Russell’s limit. Anyways, bullcrap! There must be a reason why you’re so excited by only doing 2-3 scenes for 73 Yards?” I carried on from my previous sentence, exhaling heavily. “Why can’t I just be excited?” “You can!” I said to him, touching Jasper for the first time since Barbie and placing my hands on his arms. “It’s just that… everytime you didn’t have a lot of scenes in Barbie or Sex Ed, you would either go back to your trailer and do whatever you do in there.” “Aww… is someone having FOMO?” Jasper teased me with another smirk.
I gave him a look, tilting my head and having a serious expression on my face. I also removed my hands from his arms.
“No… did I say that?” “Obviously not, Ncuti. But remember, actions speak louder than words.” Jasper continued to tease me, but I wasn’t going to let him do that so easily. ‘Two can play that game, Jas.’ “Okay then, perhaps I am feeling a bit FOMO. But maybe it’s because you never invited me to your trailer, for some weird reason.”
I noticed the hesitation coming from Jasper when I said that, which made me more curious as to why he was like that since we met on Sex Education.
“Is there a reason why?” I cautiously asked him, squinting my eyes at him. “…why do you wanna know?” He eventually replied back. “Well, you’re always either in my trailer or in Asa’s. But we’re never at your trailer.” I told him. “Well, I’m not, at least.”
I watched as Jasper took a nervous deep breath.
“I don’t think you want to know.” Jasper managed to say, shrugging his shoulders. I never saw him like this, only when his anxiety spikes up in either chemistry screen tests or table reads. “I think…” I got closer to Jasper, putting my hands on his arms again, just to comfort him. “I think I do want to know.”
Jasper just shook his head.
“Not yet. Okay?” I just nodded my head in agreement before Russell told us to get to set. It was the final scene of the ‘Dot & Bubble’ episode, so I was starting my series with such a tough scene.
But I knew Millie and everyone was going to be there to support me. However, I needed to know the reason.

Why Sex Education is the Greatest Coming-of-Age Series Ever
In a world in which coming-of-age television shows and movies are around every corner, Laurie Nunn's Sex Education stands tall. The hilarious series is a modern masterpiece that has redefined the genre. This British dramedy first premiered on Netflix in 2019. Since its release, the series has captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of humor, heart, and unflinching exploration of adolescent sexuality. Compelling characters, progressive themes, and brilliant storytelling proves Sex Education has emerged as the best coming-of-age series of all time. At the heart of Sex Education lies a diverse and deeply complex cast of characters. Each character is thoughtfully crafted and undergoes significant growth throughout the series, making them relatable to viewers of all ages. The protagonist, Otis Milburn, played by Asa Butterfield. Otis is an awkward and intelligent teenager who grapples with his own sexual insecurities. Otis's journey from sexual ignorance to becoming a trusted sex advice guru is a captivating arc. His story mirrors the experiences of many adolescents navigating their own sexual awakening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WldgrH9SvbE Maeve Wiley, portrayed by Emma Mackey, is another standout character. Maeve's troubled background, ambition, and vulnerability make her a relatable figure for viewers. Her friendship with Otis is central to the show's emotional core, and their dynamic reflects the importance of platonic relationships in adolescence. The ensemble cast, including Eric, Aimee, Jackson, and many others, adds depth and authenticity to the narrative. These characters address a wide range of issues, from LGBTQ+ experiences and racial diversity to body image and mental health. Through its diverse character roster, Sex Education invites viewers to empathize with the struggles and triumphs of adolescents from various backgrounds. Sex Education lives up to its title by fearlessly addressing one of the most fundamental aspects of adolescence: sexuality. Laurie Nunn's series tackles this subject matter with nuance, humor, and sensitivity, setting it apart from other coming-of-age shows. The show acknowledges that young people are curious about sex, often confused, and in need of guidance. It doesn't shy away from explicit content. This courage allows to show to use it as a vehicle for meaningful discussions about consent, communication, and self-acceptance. Otis's role as a sex advice counselor for his peers provides a unique lens. It's from this perspective that the show examines sexual issues. It highlights the importance of open communication, consent, and understanding in sexual relationships, empowering both the characters and the viewers to navigate this aspect of life with maturity and empathy. By addressing these topics head-on, Sex Education becomes a valuable resource for fostering healthy discussions about sex among young people and their parents. One of the most significant strengths of Sex Education is its commitment to addressing contemporary social issues. The series seamlessly weaves important themes such as LGBTQ+ acceptance, feminism, gender identity, and mental health into its narrative. These themes are not just surface-level additions but are deeply integrated into the characters' stories, contributing to their growth and development. Eric Effiong, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, is a prime example of the show's progressive themes. Eric's journey as a gay teenager navigating his identity, love life, and acceptance from his family and peers is portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity. Sex Education doesn't shy away from depicting the challenges Eric faces, but it also celebrates his resilience and self-discovery, sending a powerful message of hope and acceptance. Furthermore, the show challenges traditional gender roles and stereotypes. It presents female characters who are unapologetically strong and independent, addressing issues like slut-shaming and body image. Maeve Wiley, for instance, defies stereotypes by being a sharp-witted, entrepreneurial, and complex character who refuses to conform to societal expectations. While Sex Education tackles serious and sensitive subjects, it also balances them with a delightful dose of humor. The humor in the series is not only clever but also serves as a mechanism to humanize the characters. This allows Sex Education to make their experiences relatable. The awkwardness of adolescence, whether in the context of dating, friendships, or family dynamics, is portrayed with a perfect blend of wit and authenticity. The show's humor is complemented by its ability to create moments of genuine emotion and connection. These heartfelt moments resonate deeply with viewers, making them feel invested in the characters' lives. Whether it's Otis's relationship with his mother, Jean Milburn, or the evolving friendships among the main characters, Sex Education continually reminds us of the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding in our own lives. The success of Sex Education would not be possible without the outstanding performances of its cast and the skilled direction of Laurie Nunn. Asa Butterfield's portrayal of Otis is a standout, capturing the character's vulnerability, growth, and humor. Emma Mackey brings depth and authenticity to Maeve's character, making her one of the most beloved figures in the series. Additionally, the supporting cast members deliver exceptional performances, ensuring that each character feels fully realized. Laurie Nunn's direction is marked by its visual creativity and emotional resonance. The show's setting, a mix of retro and modern aesthetics, adds a unique and visually appealing layer to the storytelling. Nunn's ability to create intimate and authentic moments between characters, even in the midst of humor and chaos, is a testament to her talent as a storyteller. Laurie Nunn's Sex Education transcends the typical coming-of-age series to become a modern masterpiece of television. Through its complex and relatable characters, fearless exploration of teenage sexuality, progressive themes, humor, and heartfelt moments, Sex Education captures the essence of adolescence in a way that resonates with viewers of all ages. Its outstanding performances and direction elevate it to a class of its own, making it the best coming-of-age series of all time. Laurie Nunn's creation reminds us that understanding, empathy, and open communication are essential components of the journey through adolescence, and it does so with unparalleled brilliance. #TeechallaclothingLLC Although this British creative has been working in fashion for over a decade now, she cut her teeth on the Seager Semien ’24 Straight Up Texas Shirt Besides,I will do this editorial side of the industry. Only recently did she make the switch to styling celebrities—thanks to a fortuitous experience on the set of a photoshoot. “My first actor client was Ncuti Gatwa [who previously starred in Netflix’s Sex Education], who I met in 2019 on an editorial shoot, Kay, 34, said. “Ncuti and I just clicked. I really loved his energy and his enthusiasm for clothes, so I offered to dress him if he had press coming up, not really understanding at the time what that really entailed. A few weeks later, his agent got in contact. That first fitting we did together for Sex Education press and it was so much fun. From there, I totally fell in love with the process of talent styling.
#TeechallaclothingLLC Kay says a pivotal moment in her career pivot specifically came through dressing Gatwa for his appearance at the Seager Semien ’24 Straight Up Texas Shirt Besides,I will do this 2022 BAFTA TV Awards. “For Ncuti, who is Rwandan Scottish, it was important to him that he wear an African designer for such an important moment in his career, Kay recalls. We went with Nigerian designer Adebayo Oke Lawal’s Orange Culture. The outfit specifically referenced protests that were happening in Nigeria at the time, around freedom of expression, a message that resonated with Gatwa. The look was a hit and helped Kay realize “the potential of what can be achieved through celebrity styling. She committed herself to the career “more intentionally. These days, in addition to Gatwa, Kay now regularly styles actors Kit Connor, Paul Mescal, Meg Bellamy, Ben Aldridge, and Archie Madekwe. She says she is excited by “the idea that we’re hopefully moving towards postgenderism in fashion. In the clothing she pulls for her clients, she hopes to focus less on gender and sexuality and more on their personalities. “That’s why I place so much emphasis on including in my client’s voice and values in what we do together, so that when we do take risks or push boundaries it’s authentic to them and doesn’t feel performative. SEX EDUCATION 2019
You know in rom-coms, when the guy finally realizes he's in love with the girl, and he turns up with a boom box outside her house, blasting her favorite song, and everyone in the audience swoons? Yeah, that makes me sick.
