On August 19, 1916, a mob of white people in Alachua County, Florida, lynched five Black individuals—Andrew McHenry, Bert Dennis, John Haskins, Mary Dennis, and Stella Young—while a Black man named James Dennis was also killed nearby by a “sheriff’s posse.” On the same day, almost 1,000 miles away in Navarro County, Texas, a mob of 200 white people lynched Edward Lang, a 21-year-old Black man. These incidents of racial terror violence occurred just months before the U.S. entered World War I to fight on behalf of the principles of democracy and freedom.
On August 18, in Jonesville, Florida, a Black man by the name of Boisey Long was accused of murdering the local constable. When Mr. Long went missing, word spread that four Black men—Andrew McHenry, Bert Dennis, James Dennis, and John Haskins—and two Black women—Mary Dennis and Stella Young—had allegedly aided Mr. Long in an escape. On Saturday, August 19, a mob of white people captured Andrew McHenry, Bert Dennis, John Haskins, Mary Dennis, and Stella Young, and lynched them. According to reports, on the same day James Dennis was captured and killed by a “sheriff’s posse.”
As was the case here, and typical of the era, white people sought to maintain white supremacy and dominance by instilling fear in the entire Black community through brutal violence that was often unpredictable and arbitrary. With no reported evidence connecting these men and women to the alleged crime, the white mob’s focus clearly expanded beyond a specific person accused of an offense and instead targeted members of the wider Black community, instilling community-wide fear.
Nearly 1,000 miles away, on the same day, a 21-year-old Black man named Edward Lang was accused of assaulting a young white woman near the town of Rice in Navarro County, Texas. A mob of white people captured Mr. Lang four miles from where the alleged attack took place and handed him over to the sheriff. However, before Mr. Lang could be tried, on that same day, an unmasked and armed mob of 200 white farmers seized Mr. Lang from the jail and hanged him from a telephone pole.
During this era, almost 25% of lynchings involved allegations of inappropriate behavior between a Black man and a white woman that was often characterized as "assault."
Lynchings and racial terror during this era reinforced racial hierarchy and fostered lawlessness and disregard for constitutional guarantees of equal protection. Despite the tragedy of this violence, hundreds of thousands of Black people fought to defend the U.S. when it was threatened during World War I.

“ All eyes were on Wall Street, but truth be told, the market crash paled in comparison to the Navarro County drought.” The news of Black Tuesday came and went as little more than dry morsels between flapjacks and red-eyed gravy. Black Thursday was no different. Margin calls and ticker-talk; it was all a foreign language to the average man of Navarro county. New York, Chicago and any place not…

High hopes, low water
As I promised a couple of days ago, here are the final images from our walk down to the Navarro River just before we left Hendy Woods State Park. According to my copy of The Hiker’s Hip Pocket Guide to the Mendocino Coast, “The Navarro River is the largest coastal river between Humboldt County’s Eel River and Sonoma County’s Russian River. All three of these rivers pass through Mendocino County.…

Illinois Appeals Court Affirms Actor Jussie Smollett's Convictions and Jail Sentence | Newsmax.com
https://www.newsmax.com/us/jussie-smollett-illinois-appeal/2023/12/01/id/1144444/
An appeals court upheld the disorderly conduct convictions Friday of actor Jussie Smollett, who was accused of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself in 2019 and lying about it to Chicago police.
Smollett, who appeared in the TV show "Empire," challenged the role of a special prosecutor, jury selection, evidence and many other aspects of the case. But all were turned aside in a 2-1 opinion from the Illinois Appellate Court.
Smollett had reported to police that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack by two men wearing ski masks. The search for the attackers soon turned into an investigation of Smollett himself, leading to his arrest on charges he had orchestrated the whole thing.
Authorities said he paid two men whom he knew from work on "Empire," which filmed in Chicago. Prosecutors said Smollett told the men what slurs to shout, and to yell that he was in "MAGA country," a reference to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign slogan.
A jury convicted Smollett in 2021 on five felony counts of disorderly conduct, a charge that can be filed in Illinois when a person lies to police.
He now will have to finish a 150-day stint in jail that was part of his sentence. Smollett spent just six days in jail while his appeal was pending.
A message seeking comment from his attorney, Nenye Uche, was not immediately returned. Lawyers for Smollett, who is Black and gay, have publicly claimed that he was the target of a racist justice system and people playing politics.
Appellate Justice Freddrenna Lyle would have thrown out the convictions. She said it was "fundamentally unfair" to appoint a special prosecutor and charge Smollett when he had already performed community service as part of a 2019 deal with Cook County prosecutors to close the case.
"It was common sense that Smollett was bargaining for a complete resolution of the matter, not simply a temporary one," Lyle said.
Special prosecutor Dan Webb was appointed to look into why the case was dropped. A grand jury subsequently restored charges against Smollett in 2020, and Webb concluded there were "substantial abuses of discretion" in the state's attorney office during the earlier round.
Smollett was not immune to a fresh round of charges, appellate Justices David Navarro and Mary Ellen Coghlan said in the majority opinion.
"The record does not contain any evidence that (prosecutors) agreed Smollett would not be further prosecuted in exchange for forfeiting his bond and performing community service," they said.

A Texas woman who was jailed and charged with murder after self-managing an abortion in 2022 can move forward with her lawsuit against the local sheriff and prosecutors over the case that drew national outrage before the charges were quickly dropped, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton denied a motion by prosecutors and the sheriff to dismiss the lawsuit during a hearing in the border city of McAllen. Lizelle Gonzalez, who spent two nights in jail on the murder charges and is seeking $1 million in damages in the lawsuit, did not attend the hearing. Texas has one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion bans and outlaws the procedure with limited exceptions. Under Texas law, women seeking an abortion are exempt from criminal charges, however. Starr County District Attorney Gocha Ramirez and other defendants have argued their positions provide them immunity from civil lawsuits. Rick Navarro, an attorney for the defense, argued that it was “at worst a negligence case” during the hearing.

Trump is starting to worry about prison. 😃
In the past several months, Donald Trump has had a burning question for some of his confidants and attorneys: Would the authorities make him wear “one of those jumpsuits” in prison? As the criminal cases against him have piled up, the former president and 2024 GOP frontrunner has wondered aloud in recent months about what life would be like if he’s convicted, and if appeals fail. While Trump publicly professes confidence, privately, three sources familiar with his comments say, he’s been asking lawyers and other people close to him what a prison sentence would look like for a former American president. Would he be sent to a “club fed” style prison — a place that’s relatively comfortable, as far these things go — or a “bad” prison? Would he serve out a sentence in a plush home confinement? Would government officials try to strip him of his lifetime Secret Service protections? What would they make him wear, if his enemies actually did ever get him in a cell — an unprecedented set of consequences for a former leader of the free world. What would happen — including in the Fulton County, Georgia criminal case against him and various co-defendants — if he were convicted and sentenced, but also re-elected? The private questions are a departure from the air of supreme confidence invincibility Trump has projected. In interviews and elsewhere, he has claimed that the thought of losing in court and going to prison simply cannot enter his mind.
Trump should look at the bright side: An orange jumpsuit will match him perfectly. And if he drops the soap, a Secret Service agent will be there to pick it up for him.
By coincidence, this news story emerged on Tuesday.
Trump asks Supreme Court for 'absolute immunity' in election interference case
If presidents REALLY had "absolute immunity" then Biden would be able to exile Trump to Baker Island.
EXTRA! One of Trump's former aides, quack economist and conspiracy theorist Peter Navarro, began serving his prison sentence this week...

Kamala Harris is willing to throw migrants under the bus to court a further right wing democratic party. This is shown by her "tough on immigration" stance and the presence of the Bexar county sheriff who fear mongered about cartels trucking migrants across the border (the same shit trump says) and Ana Navarro-Cardenas, a lifelong Republican and right wing death squad defender.
No, I'm not fucking voting for her. Until she dumps these policies and fundamentally sets herself apart as different from Donald Trump: Chinga la migra y chinga la policía. Chinga tu madre Kamala Harris.

A mass shooting that left one dead and seven injured at a gas station in Oakland, California happened during the filming of a music video, reports say.
The gunfire that erupted Monday night at a Valero location came hours after seven people were killed in a shooting in San Mateo County and about two days after a mass shooting in Monterey Park left 11 dead.
Witnesses told police the gas station shooting on Seminary Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard happened during the filming of a music video, according to KTVU.
An independent journalist at the scene reported the same to CBS Bay Area.
SHOOTING AT CALIFORNIA GAS STATION LEAVES 7 INJURED, 1 DEAD
Fox News Digital has reached out to the Oakland Police Department for further information.
The shooting happened at around 6 p.m. local time, the Oakland Police Department's Kim Armstead said at a news conference.
Officers had responded to the scene to investigate a ShotSpotter activation and, upon their arrival, learned of the shooting. Police did not find any victims when they arrived, but they did locate several casings.
CALIFORNIA REELS FROM STRING OF MASS SHOOTINGS DESPITE HAVING SOME OF THE STRICTEST GUN LAWS IN THE US
"Shortly thereafter, our communications division received notification of multiple gunshot wound victims, who self-transported to local hospitals," Armstead said.
Family members at Highland Hospital identified the deceased victim as 18-year-old Mario Navarro, according to KTVU.
It is unclear what led to the shooting. Police have not revealed information about any arrests or potential suspects. Police said the seven surviving victims are in stable condition.
Investigators believe the shooting involved multiple gunmen, who may have fired their weapons from across the street.

Daniel Webster (80 John) Wallace (September 15, 1860 - March 28, 1939) was born enslaved in Victoria County, Texas. He did not like farm work and ran away to become a cowboy. He worked for several ranchers in east-central Texas, but it was through his work as a wrangler and horse breaker for John Nunn, whose brand on his cattle was a large number 80—that “80 John” became Webster’s nickname. He was a typical cowboy in some respects, he was atypical in others. He saw a bigger future for himself than many of his peers who were contented to spend their lives following someone else’s cattle. He realized that his lack of education was a handicap and traveled to Navarro County, Texas, where he learned to read and write. He married Laura Dee Owens (1888).
By his mid-twenties he arranged with his boss, Clay Mann, to accept cattle as part of his pay. He acquired a 1,280-acre ranch, a reputation for fairness and hard work, and a savvy that allowed him to survive in the ranching business. His legacy included a wife, three daughters, and a son; well-earned respect from all who knew him; and an estate valued at more than $1 million. He received the admiration of Mitchell County and the state of Texas with a historical marker recognizing his achievements and a school named in his honor. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
