Revisiting the Documentary, "Navalny"
In the documentary "Navalny," the Russian opposition leader searches for his would-be killers.
Russia's jailed opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, has died in prison. Navalny had been living behind bars since shortly after landing in Moscow in January of 2021. He had been returning home following months of recovery in Europe, after he fell violently sick on a flight between Siberia and Moscow.
In the months following Navalny’s poisoning, Christo Grozev, former lead Russia investigator at Bellingcat, was stuck in Vienna with filmmaker Daniel Roher. The two had just been booted from Ukraine, where they had been trying to film an investigation. Grozev suddenly had a lot of time on his hands, a laptop, and a fresh stack of data from the Russian black market so naturally he began to investigate who was behind the poisoning.
Daniel Roher directed the documentary “Navalny,” which portrays the story of the close collaboration between Navalny, his team, and Grozev, in the hunt for the dissident’s would-be killers. Last year, Brooke spoke to Roher and Grozev about the making of the documentary, which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.

Dictator Vladimir Putin probably hates this film which Alexei Navalny made about his greed and corruption. That's the best reason to watch it!
Much of the documentary focuses on what we call the Putin Palace – Vlad's opulent crib on the Black Sea near Gelendzhik. The Putin Palace makes Saltburn look like a cheesy AirBnB. The Putin Palace is said to be the largest single residence in Russia.
Speaking of Saltburn, this is even longer than that film. So make sure there's plenty of popcorn on hand. 🍿
Since it's probably banned in Russia, look at ways of sending this vid to friends and family there which can get around digital censorship.
EDIT: Putin is as afraid of the dead Navalny as he was of the living Navalny.
Russian digital map service reportedly blocking reviews at memorial sites visited by Navalny mourners
Alexei Navalny death latest: Putin critic’s wife says Kremlin ‘waiting for novichok poison’ to leave his body
Putin's assassination of Navalny seems to be turning into another Russian public relations disaster.

My husband is in prison just for telling the truth. My husband is in prison just for defending democracy. Alexei, I am dreaming the day when you'll be free and our country will be free. Stay strong, my love.

On my hands and knees begging the academy to start nominating documentaries based on quality rather than subject matter, I can't take many more of these glorified human interest newscasts

Every fucking westerner, and easterner, and both southerners and northeners too, on this god forsaken website, who said anything at all about how the world manages to discern politics from art for Ukraine but not other nations or ethnicities, based on, idk, Russians being banned from Eurovision which is surely because Ukrainians are white, and not, you know, the full-scale invasion that happened in the ninth year of Russian war against Ukraine, the ninth year of my hometown being occupied, and is still ongoing, and is a real fucking genocide on the scale unseen in Europe since WWII or Serbia, owes me, personally, to donate to a charity of their choosing:
Donate to Come Back Alive Foundation (life-saving defense)
Donate to Leleka Foundation (life-saving medical supplies)
(do not, under any circumstances, donate to Red Cross)

Утро. Ковровский суд. Камера с решеткой, видеосвязь. Адвокат говорит Алексею, что фильм выиграл Оскар. Думаю, это будет самое поразительное объявление о победе в истории. Morning. Kovrov Court. A camera with a grille, video communication. The lawyer tells Alexey that the film won an Oscar. I think this will be the most amazing victory announcement in history.
Alexei Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, responding to the ‘Navalny’ documentary winning an Oscar. Incredible that Navalny has been told already!

It looks like the start of another bad week for Vladimir Putin. 🥳 🎉 👏🏼
Russia’s leading anti-Putin dissident, Alexey Navalny, is the subject of a film which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday.
Now everybody is going to see the film and be reminded of what a dickhead dictator Putin is.
“Navalny,” a film that explores the plot to kill Russian anti-corruption campaigner and former presidential candidate, Alexey Navalny, has won the Oscar for best documentary feature at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
The riveting real-life thriller follows Navalny’s political rise, his survival of an assassination attempt against him by poisoning and his subsequent imprisonment. Directed by Daniel Roher and presented by CNN Films and HBO Max, “Navalny” documents a methodical investigation by CNN Chief International Correspondent, Clarissa Ward, and journalist group, Bellingcat, to unmask Navalny’s would-be killers.
[ ... ]
He was poisoned with nerve agent Novichok in 2020, an attack several Western officials and Navalny himself openly blamed on the Kremlin. Russia has denied any involvement.
After several months in Germany recovering from the poisoning, Navalny returned to Moscow, where he was immediately arrested for violating probation terms imposed from a 2014 embezzlement case that he said was politically motivated.
He was initially sentenced to two-and-a-half years, and then later given nine years over separate allegations that he stole from his anti-corruption foundation.
