Are you ready for a spooky season?
This whale fall in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary was the life of the costume party, attracting all the creepy creatures from the deep! When a whale dies at sea, its body often sinks to the seafloor. There, its carcass becomes what is known as a whale fall. The whale’s body provides a sudden, concentrated food source — a bonanza for organisms in the deep sea for years to come. Learn more and explore the creatures of a whale fall: https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/magazine/5/whale-fall/. (Photo: OET/NOAA. Last October the #whaletalespodcast discussed whale falls and conveniently @nautiluslive found one right after our episode came out! This year they have gone back to that fall and it looks SO different! Check out episode 7 for more details about what these are. ⠀ #whaletales #podcast #whalepodcast #whalesareawesome #whalefall #whales #storytelling #subscribe #whalepodcast⠀ Posted @withregram • @nautiluslive What a difference a year makes! #NautilusLive wrapped up our second exploration of a young whale that came to rest at the bottom of the ocean near Davidson Seamount in @mbnms.⠀ ⠀ When a whale dies and sinks to the seafloor, the carcass of the cetacean introduces an extra food source into the ecosystem that can support communities of life for years after the whale has perished.⠀ ⠀ Did you join us for the dive? We’d love to know what you enjoyed the most about this phenomenal discovery. Drop us a comment below.👇🏿 https://www.instagram.com/p/CGiALm8BEiq/?igshid=ok6w18jq8tcr

So beautiful! It can Dance!! ❤️ 🔸 💦 🔸 ❤️ #waterlandyou #repost #reposting @sea What can you find 1,600 meters below sea level? 🐙 Video by @nautiluslive : Dancing at a depth of 1,600 meters, our #NautilusLive team spotted this elegant octopus billowing its arms like a circus tent while exploring southwest of Baker Island in the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument. Experts believe the cephalopod belongs to Cirroteuthidae, a family of cirrate octopuses, but the exact species is unknown. Little is known about Cirroteuthid octopuses, other than that they often swim or drift near the seabed at depths of over 2,000m where light does not penetrate the cold waters. 👀1600m @ Baker Island, Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument @USFWS @noaafisheries #sea #deepsea #underwater https://www.instagram.com/p/CVEUX5dtJ56/?utm_medium=tumblr

THIS IS INSANE 🤯 the deep sea is so fascinating! Who wants us to post more about it?µ FOLLOW @ocean._.4u FOLLOW @ocean._.4u . "Video and caption below by @nautiluslive “Whale look what we have here! During the final dive of this year’s Nautilus expedition season, our team discovered a whale fall while exploring Davidson Seamount off central California’s coast with researchers from Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The skeletal remains of this relatively recent fall are of a baleen whale estimated to be 4-5 meters long, and the team is working to identify the species. The site exhibits an interesting mid-stage of ecological succession, as both large scavengers like eel pouts and octopus are still stripping the skeleton of blubber, and bone-eating Osedax worms are starting to dissolve the bones." #nautiluslive @mbnms #RoamTheOceans . . . . . #deepsea #octopus #whale #whales #carcess #animals #lifecycle #nature #facts #learning #deep #sea #ocean #exploration #deepseacreatures #cephalopod #cali #california #diving #scubadiving #weird #underwater #bones Reposted from @ocean._.4u https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ17bs-n6eA/?utm_medium=tumblr

Posted @withregram • @noaasanctuaries Are you really going to scroll by without wishing this stubby squid a happy #SquidAndCuttlefishDay? These cephalopods spend their lives on the seafloor, coating themselves in a mucus jacket and burrowing into the sediment. Leaving just those big eyes peeking above the surface, they remain buried until prey items like shrimp or small fish (or a curious ROV) pass by! How are you celebrating today? . #EarthIsBlue #Squids #Cephalopods #ROV #NautilusLive #Celebrate #StubbySquid (Photo: OET/NOAA. love nautiluslive so much....there was a shrimp with really long legs and one of the scientists was like ‘those are his walking legs’ and a viewer asked why they use green lasers on the deep sea probes instead of red or other colors and one of the scientists was like ‘cause thats what they had at the store’
