Pyrenula ochraceoflavens
Yellow pox lichen
This crustose lichen has a yellow-orange, continuous or cracked thallus, and is usually more pigmented around the perithecial fruiting bodies. These perithecia have a weakly carbonized (blackened) pseudostromatic shell (the raised, blister like part around the ostiole). P. ochraceoflavens grows on the smooth bark of tropical forest trees, and has been recorded in Florida, USA, the Caribbean, and India. But there are so many variations within the genus and even within the species that delimitation is hazy at best. A pox on Pyrenula and all its related genera!

I had a new "oh, my family were the weird ones" moment recently: it seems no one else's family celebrated Frog Night (the first warm rainy night of spring) by going down to the local vernal pool after dark to help the amphibians safely across the road and listening to the spring peepers. (We'd then go back in daytime later on to observe the egg masses, of course.)
Apparently "Frog Night" as a holiday is a thing my mother invented and not a widely-accepted idea, which is a shame because I've been referring to it as if it was for the past 30 years.

Long ago, a stone felt a tingle on its skin. Moss. A new feeling. A green feeling. The granite spoke of ages in the heat of deep Earth. The moss sang the taste of sunlight and the softness of salamander bellies. They named one another. And told those names to no one at all.

Xylographa vitiligo
White-spotted woodscript lichen
You may have heard of vitiligo in reference to the autoimmune disorder that causes patches of skin to lose pigment, and you can see just by looking at this lichen why it was given the same name. X. vitiligo is a crustose lichen that has a mostly immersed thallus that is thin and pale, giving the wood it grows on distinctive pale gray or white spots. It produces farinose (mealy or powdery), blue-gray to green-brown soredia, and has round, oval, or slit-shaped apothecia with a pale-red-brown to black-brown disc. X. vitiligo colonizes dead conifer wood and stumps, fence posts, and driftwood in boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It often grows alongside similar looking wood-script lichens, but can be identified using chemical spot tests on the soredia with KOH (+yellow) and PD (+ orange).
