Hey I just realized I don't think I know any American irl who doesn't have an immigrant ancestor within living memory and want to see if that's a me thing or just an average situation
#i know the 'further back' option also covers every native American but... it's different. GGGpa coming over from spain or smthn is#different than g^30pa coming across the bering strait land bridge you know?#like. dont be a pedant.#like i think the reason no one in my sorta life is not a recent addition to the country is bc im from an area thats like. mostly#recent immigrants. My family included.

Youse guys ever what the native life calls their own nebula? I think about it a lot.
It’s summertime, so let’s enjoy 🍦! The Cone Nebula, shown in this Hubble Space Telescope photo, could pack a lot of ice cream into its 2.5 light-year-long expanse. It resides in a turbulent star-forming region. Within the dark pillar, a new generation of stars is being born. Ultraviolet light from nearby, massive stars heats the edges of the dark cloud, releasing gas into the surrounding space to create the glowing, red tendrils seen throughout the image. Credit: NASA, ESA, H. Ford (JHU), G. Illingworth (UCSC/LO), M.Clampin (STScI), G. Hartig (STScI), and the ACS Science Team. ALT TEXT: A wide, dark pillar surrounded by wispy red tendrils extends from lower left to upper right across most of the frame. The cone-shaped pillar narrows gradually to a smooth, rounded top. Several bright stars are seen at the top of the pillar, while a few more stars are in the background to either side in the top third of the image. A shorter pillar at lower right joins into the larger one.

gotta say, theres something really weird about how online queer spaces pretend that intersex people dont exist. even american queer rights orgs seem to ignore us. and then i see kiwi sites on queer communities and theres comparatively a lot of intersex stuff. i go to a local nurses office and intersex people are included in a pamphlet on representation in books. every queer rights org has a link to to sites for intersex rights. am i crazy or is america falling behind? its quite... concerning
#intersex#queer#in the same train of thought#american media is strangely devoid of indigenous representation#for most of my life#the majority of media i have engaged in#is american#yet i didnt find any native american characters outside westerns#until i read heros of olympus#Piper is the only native american character ive ever seen#outside media set in the 1800s#compare that to media in aotearoa#where theres hakas on tv#just because thats part of aotearoa#not trying to brag#but america is falling behind

Conner Phantom, learning to live
It had been a few years since Vlad and Danny had stopped being enemies, years since Amity had been at peace with the ghosts. Danny spent his days teaching his children (he assumed they were his children) about well, everything.
Dan and Ellie had prefabricated knowledge, the halfa couldn't quite get it, but the point was that while they knew who was the creator of the chemistry, they had no idea how to do 2 + 2, so he made it his homework to fill in all the gaps.
No one at Amity blinked at the 30-year-boy-who-was-actually-12 and the 15-year-girl-who-was-actually-4, Danny guessed they had gotten used to the weirdness. One day, Vlad called and pointed out that someone had entered his database a few months ago (apparently he checked his digital security very little when he didn't make "evil" plans) and they had stolen the plans for the cloning capsule. Danny had a bad feeling.
Of course, it was after a month of searching that he found out about Lex Luthor's little "project." To say that he was angry was an understatement; he found the poor Superboy being mind controlled. He felt sad when he remembered Ellie's situation and well, he ended up stealing a clone child and destroying some laboratory. Like old times.
The world did not know of Phantom; Amity was suspicious, almost jealous that their protector could be taken away if they said a word, so they didn't say anything out of the city. It's not like the League did anything when they called. Danny didn't care, less tedious meetings and contingency plans for him. Besides, he wasn't excited about going back to the field if he didn't have to, as long as Amity was safe, the world could be destroyed for all he cared.
He wondered if spending too much time with Dan was affecting him, but in the end he dismissed the thought. Upon arriving home, Superboy had woken up and was being interrogated by the Phantoms. He chose his name to be Conner (sounds good apparently) and agreed to take classes to fill in the gaps of knowledge, just like Ellie, he seemed uncomfortable with the gaps.
The poor boy looked uncomfortable, waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. After finding out whose clone he was, he wondered if they would take him to Superman, but Danny just snorted. By the end of the week, Conner was a Phantom, and he was fine with that. Danny even told him that he could live normally if he wanted to, and the boy happily accepted the offer. Conner didn't want to be a hero, at least not that early, and Danny was happy with his decision.
Danny frowned thinking of all the heroes who would say that is "selfish" for someone with power to not to use it. But he believed that they were doubly selfish. Being a teenage hero wasn't fucking easy. He hugged Conner, welcoming him to the family and within days, the whole town already knew about him (they also knew whose clone he was, but they didn't really care, they weren't snitching).
Curiously, it was Tim Drake who noticed the strange family visiting Gotham (a 23-year-old seemed to be berating a 30-year-old for stealing tires, he snorted at the irony). However he froze when he saw Clark?, but much younger, speaking in Kryptonian and laughing. He called a meeting in the batcave and tried to call the family, but as soon as they saw the expression in his face they vanished from sight.
Hell, he needed to report it to Bruce.
#dpxdc#Basically Conner life if Danny found him instead of YJ#years earlier#Danny have experience with clones after all#he's happy with his family addition#Conner is happy too#He doesn't care about Superman#his Dad and siblings are cooler#Vlad and Danny are allies#They kinda retired#Vlad is trying to reconnect with Dan and Dani and is not working#dp x dc#dc x dp#Of course Danny investigated about Krypton#His child had the right to know his origins and speak his native language#Of course he take him to the Realms to meet some Kryptonians too#Danny does not like that all their knowledge was implanted or magically there so he gives them particular classes#He will accept more students if they ask like magic kids or more clones#Tim is having a panic attack at the same time that he has a bisexual panic#Conner deserves to be happy#Clark is going to faint but he does not have the jurisdiction of this child lol#Connor chosed a Kryptonian name when he learned about his origins of course

Good News - May 15-21
Like these weekly compilations? Support me on Ko-fi! Also, if you tip me on Ko-fi, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week - almost double the content!
1. Translocation of 2,000 rhinos in Africa gets underway in “one of the most audacious conservation efforts of modern times”
“The 2,000 rhinos - more than are currently found in any single wild location in Africa - represent around 12-15% of the continent’s remaining white rhino population. […] “Rhinos perform an important ecological function in the environment as a large grazing herbivore,” says Dale Wepener[….] “The protection of rhino is far more than just looking after rhino; other species that occur in the protected areas will benefit from the protection,” explains Jooste. “This will lead to an increase in diversity and result in much healthier ecosystems.”
2. Florida Corridor Buffers Effects of Climate Change on Wildlife — And People
“A massive multi-partner effort that has conserved 10 million acres for wildlife in Florida over past decades will help buffer wildlife—and people—from the effects of climate change, a new report says. […] Protecting these corridors is important for wildlife genetics, demography and connectivity […], conducting prescribed fires in the corridor can reduce the risk of more intense wildfires [… and] they can provide buffers against hurricanes and seasonal thunderstorms.”
3. Global life expectancy to increase by nearly 5 years by 2050 despite geopolitical, metabolic, and environmental threats
“Increases are expected to be largest in countries where life expectancy is lower, contributing to a convergence of increased life expectancy across geographies. The trend is largely driven by public health measures that have prevented and improved survival rates from cardiovascular diseases, COVID-19, and a range of communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional diseases (CMNNs).”
4. Valencia has Spain’s longest urban park
“Jardin del Turia (Turia Garden) is the green spine of the City of Valencia and Spain’s (and possibly Europe’s) longest urban park stretching for a length of 8.5 kilometres [… and] the current administration plans to make Jardin del Turia Europe’s largest city green space by extending it to the sea[….] Almost all Valencia residents (97 per cent) live within 300 metres of an urban green space. […] Jardin del Turia is a true urban oasis that provides exceptional thermal comfort, with a temperature difference of up to three degrees compared to other areas of the city.”
5. This Paint Could Clean Both Itself and the Air
“When an artificial ultraviolet light source shines on [photocatalytic] paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to make them break down—theoretically removing them from the nearby air and preventing a discoloring buildup. [… R]esearchers developed a new photocatalytic paint that they claim works using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown that they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials [including fallen leaves].”
6. Planting Seedlings for a Cooler Rockingham
“A dedicated group of volunteers recently planted over a thousand native seedlings in Lewington Reserve [… and] re-established canopy cover to areas of the reserve to create cooling shade for the local community and provide homes for native wildlife. […] Planting lots of trees and shrubs in urban areas can help create shade and cool cities, mitigating the impacts of climate change, contributing to biodiversity conservation and building greener, more resilient communities.”
7. Sydney’s first dedicated affordable housing for trans women designed to deliver ‘positive outcomes’
“Community housing provider and charity Common Equity NSW, […] which is for people on very low to moderate incomes, prides itself on creating inclusive living and promotes the independence and well-being of people and communities […, and] will deliver the first-of-its-kind social housing in a bid to provide a safe place to live for transgender women seeking an affordable home.”
8. Rewilding: How a herd of bison reintroduced to Romania is helping ‘supercharge’ carbon removal
“170 European Bison reintroduced to Romania’s Țarcu mountains could help capture and store the carbon released by up to 84,000 average US petrol cars each year. […] By grazing a 48 square kilometre area of grassland in a wider landscape of 300 kilometres squared, they helped to capture an additional 54,000 tonnes of carbon each year. That is around 10 times the amount that would be captured by the ecosystem without the bison.”
9. World’s biggest grids could be powered by renewables, with little or no storage
“[…] 100% renewable supply can then match the load by putting surplus electricity into two kinds of distributed storage worth that [an energy expert] says are worth buying anyway – ice-storage air-conditioning and smart bidirectional charging of electric cars, and recover that energy when needed, filling the last gaps with unobtrusively flexible demand.”
10. Supporting the Long-Term Survival of Copper River Salmon and Alaska Native Traditions
“With $4.3 million in NOAA funds, the Copper River Watershed Project and The Eyak Corporation will remove fish passage barriers, opening more streams for salmon spawning and subsistence fishing. [… As part of this effort, o]ld narrow culverts that constrict water flow will be replaced with “stream simulation” culverts wide enough to fit the full stream, including its banks. They are also deep to allow contractors to place stones and other material inside to mimic a natural stream bottom.”

I went to take out the cat litter before bed and jerked back inside with a yelp. My wife rushed over and I was babbling, “It lives here. This is its environment. It’s not reasonable to kill it even though it moves like an eldritch abomination that makes my skin crawl. That’s my problem. Not it’s problem.”
My wife looked out the door to see a Rick sized spider. “Do you want me to scoot it?”
“Yes. I’m gonna make a break for the dumpster but please scoot it so I have a clear path back.”
I scuttled past it as fast as I could, grateful it’s butt was toward me. While I tossed the litter my beloved gave it a gentle poke to get it skittering away.
Go forth, apex hunter, good hunting this night, and may I never see you again.

I saw you post about Xavier's personality. Could you explain what is the main difference between each dub?
I can only speak regarding my thoughts for the JP and EN as they’re the only languages I’m fluent in among the ones available in LADS!
in the EN dub, xavier’s tone is baseline very gentle. the cadence of his voice is almost always soothing, and even when he’s angry, he sounds very graceful and the language he uses is still quite proper
in the JP script, xavier sounds very self-assured and confident, almost to the point of being aloof. however, he is still extremely endearing, but only in select moments, and only to mc. he’s so absolutely cold to jeremiah but it’s played for laughs! this means, his baseline tone, even on normal conversations with mc, is very confident. i’ve said it before, he talks to mc like how an older boy would be speaking to a younger girl, or how a boyfriend would address their girlfriend. he is not rude, but he is not polite—this is something i have to point out over and over, because when people describe xavier as docile i feel like i have to draw the line because not only does it not match his characterization—there is a reason why xav isn’t submissive. it’s because he is royalty, and he commands respect. the jp dub shows this personality more, especially when he’s angry. he literally sounds like he’s going to burn the entire place down (no joke) when he adapts an angry tone in jp. also the way he talks to jeremiah is so obviously of someone who is used to ordering other people around (but endearingly because we know he loves jemmy)
anyway there are really a million things to say about how stark some of the differences are— but I do understand why it’s difficult to be consistent with this!there are certain nuances that only exist in the jp language and culture and the jp localization team is definitely fitting seiya into the cool jp boyfriend trope so it can appeal to the fans (and my gosh it is working!!!)
i could comment on specific cards in general if you’d want to know more OP but as for a general comment this is what I can say :)
#it’s difficult to write about this because if i did a deep dive it would take forever#but i’ll do what i can!#again i may be fluent in jp but I’m not a native speaker so this is my interpretation only!#love and deepspace#love and deepspace xavier#xavier#my guiding star#seiya continues to ruin my life#our little planet#aya writes#aya answers asks!

I'm always thinking about how G— was an engineer. A damn good one: the sole engineer of the cryo project, good enough that of all the ten billion, the FTL project chose him to inspect their work, back when the project was still a pipe dream. He was a man from an immigrant family in an underprivileged area who became arguably the world's best engineer, which is impressive in its own right, but it gets me thinking... Pre-Resurrection, John says they can't grow food on Mars (and for all John's unreliability, that's pretty believable, given that the high perchlorate concentration in Martian soil is one of the big obstacles to carrying out a sustained Mars mission), and as silly as this might sound, the engineer and scientist divide is real, and of all the nerds that John resurrected, I can't imagine it was the artist or the contract lawyer or the medical and chemistry experts that made the Mars installation viable. Gideon made a House out of it, and one that accepts recruits from across the Dominican system! "Saint of Duty" is said to fit him, evident in his loyalty and commitment to the Cohort and fighting the Resurrection Beasts, but I have to wonder, how much of that was his commitment to making shit work? I can't shake the image of a couple million people awaking to a ruined world, and someone had to get the other Houses settled, figure out spacecraft and space habitats using what little supplies they have left, and what better candidate for that than the man who canonically engineered spacecraft twice?
ANON I love this so much. You're SO right, and you put into words something about G1deon and John's shared background that I've tried to articulate for a while. In the very first chapter, John says, "It wasn’t that they didn’t have the money for a bigger team; we were simply the only ones capable of what they were asking."
This was an incredibly elite team. They were a brilliant bunch of hyperspecialised nerds. And, like, among John's squad, A- and M- and everyone else started out as colleagues — very smart people he probably met in academic circles, where being smart was kind of a prerequisite. It was their research that brought them together to begin with.
G1deon, though! He was John's friend growing up. John knew his grandparents. They spotted each other spare changes for snacks!! Then John went on to Dilworth, then to university and then overseas, and G1deon had his own (probably different) academic path, and maybe they only stayed vaguely in touch, but when it was time to look for an engineer that could help them build spaceships constructed to provide life support to the whole of humanity for centuries — and G1deon was the guy for that.
The fact that two boys from similar underprivileged backgrounds individually made huge breakthroughs in their chosen fields, and got to work together on a project that was meant to save the world... I bet at the time it felt like a miraculous coincidence. I think they thought, if they'd made it that far, that they could do anything.
(yet another layer to the tragedy of what happened etc etc. G1deon torn between John and P—. John stopping G1deon's heart)
Thank you so much for all your thoughts about the Mars space installation, also — I wonder how long there was between Mars becoming the Second House (founded by G1deon! he and Pyrrha did the bulk of the work!) and the institution of the Third House, which doesn't have a named founder and might very well have been a shared project built on the blueprint of what G1deon set up. "the man who canonically engineered spacecraft twice" — my god I love this so much. It's G1deon emo hours today
#this ask PUNCHED ME IN THE GUTS ty for my life#g1deon#gideon the first#tlt thoughts#ntn#ask#anonymous#tlt#tlt meta#ONE THING though is that I don't think we're meant to interpret G1deon as being from an immigrant family but rather native#it's not spelled out in the books so it's all headcanons#but pasifika G— is where I'm at personally
