They don’t even attempt to assassinate US politicians anymore. You notice that? Not since the anthrax scare back for… who was it, Barack? And even that… pathetic. This new generation has no respect for an honest hitman. I’m not sure this new generation has any honest hitman - you see that shit with Boeing? Sloppy, fucking disgraceful - you kill the whistleblowers before they get halfway to a lawsuit. What kind of fucking amateur is doing faked suicides the night before testimony? Goddamn greenhorns. Back in my day someone tried to shoot Ronald Reagan in broad daylight. There used to be bomb threats to Congress. I took out a few union leaders in the utilities sector myself. Today’s generation? Won’t even threaten to throw a punch - not even over on that - what’s it now, ‘X’? They got no guts. None! And they don’t even have poor impulse control to boot! Too much of that - that panopticon anxiety bullshit. “Oh what if I get a called out post???” People used to send the president letters full of bioweapons. In the mail! Today’s generation? Not a chance. All because of woke.

very interested in how the storyline of ronan's sexuality is developed in the dream thieves as a battle between kavinsky and gansey while adam is almost never present in these scenes, which makes it even more interesting that we found out in CDTH that ronan was set on adam the moment he saw him. i think that ronan is attracted on some level to both gansey and kavinsky (you can draw the lines of how much romantic intention you think he hold towards either of the yourself, that's a rabbit hole I would need a whole other post to go down) but more so I think he was attracted to the IDEA of both of them and certain qualities that each possessed, and that the real question wasn't does ronan want gansey or kavinsky because we know he wants adam but rather who's qualities resonate more with who ronan is, or who he is choosing to be at this critical moment in his character development. kavinsky is a dangerous thrill and often comes wrapped in ronan's other favorite self destructive attempts to outrun himself, while gansey is ronan's history and proof of his deep capacities for loyalty and love. he tells kavinsky it was never going to be me and you and that it's not going to be ronan and gansey because that was never the question- maggie was obviously always planning on bluesy and pynch. the answer to who ronan WANTS in adam. the question of who ronan IS- that's what he's trying to decide here. his self hatred is such a heavy weight on him and theme in tdt, and the kavinsky/gansey dichotomy represents the the path he will choose to take to deal with it- keep try to drive faster than his demons or accept that he can still be loved even if he isn't the person he once was. the dream thieves my beloved ronan lynch my beloved

With the reveal that Aduo didn’t actually want to be the mother of the nation, looks like we now have a concrete path to a happy ending for Jinshi.
Though I actually really want to see him as the Emperor one day (at least for a time), it would be thematically appropriate if Jinshi takes not after the Emperor, but after Gaoshun and becomes the retainer of the future Emperor.

It's funny to me when people insist that "ATLA was really feminist" as if there wasn't really only one feminist message which was the very generic "girls can fight too" spiel that every 2000s show had going on whenever they briefly tried to jump on the feminism bandwagon or whatever

au in which azulon notices zuko's talents for stealth and infiltration early on and decides to make use of that. ozai is eager to have his lackluster first son out of the way, so he agrees without a second thought. zuko is taken from his life in the palace to be trained as a fire nation assassin.
featuring:
zuko being given a mission to infiltrate the avatar's group- not necessarily to kill the avatar, but to take advantage of the trust that being part of the avatar's group gets him in order to assassinate more high profile targets that are more fearsome than a 12 year old monk.
(but he is tasked with killing the avatar, in due time.)
zuko vanished from the palace entirely during the siege of ba sing se. iroh comes back and hears that his nephew died of a fever in the night. it strikes him as odd that a firebender would die of fever, but it is not completely unheard of- and the boy did have a weak constitution as an infant.
he is sad, but he barely knows his nephew.
(he indulges his niece instead)
aang meets jeong-jeong much earlier. katara learns of her healing abilities much earlier. this is included in the reports that zuko is given before he is sent on his mission.
he needs to figure out a way to join the avatar's group without arousing suspicion. he can't hide that he's fire nation, but he can hide that he's a firebender. he continued to be trained with the dual dao. he won't need his firebending to fight, if it comes to it.
after fleeing from crescent island, aang, katara, and sokka come across a wounded boy. the left side of his face has been badly burned. katara doesn't even hesitate to treat him, but her novice healing abilities means that he's left with a scar. she saves the eye, but it's left as a slit.
when he wakes, his eyes are fire nation gold.
his name is li. his mother was earth kingdom. the less said about his father the better. he was ambushed by a firebender, and wants to thank katara for healing him. he helps protect them from the pirates that come after them when katara steals a scroll from them. they decide to accept.
(zuko burned his own face, this time.)

At its core the most important relationship arc in Avatar the last air bender is the one between Zuko and Aang honestly if you can’t see that then I don’t think we watched the same show.
Aang and Zuko are the true Yin and Yang in the show the push and pull. Fire and Air right down to their personalities.
It is both of them that have to go on the journey of learning that fire is more than just destruction can be used for more than just to hurt.
And that right there is the point it doesn’t matter if Aang defeats Ozai and they bring the fire nation to heel. Without a character like Zuko the fire nation would be lost forever to distrust and unrest, balance would never be reached. Because despite everything they have done all the damage they have wreaked the world still needs the fire nation and to work with the fire nation they need to know that fire can do more than hurt. And who best to show them than a prince who’s been burned himself?
The war started with the fire nation attacking the air nomads in a bid for control and it will end with the fire lord embracing an air nomad and taking ownership of his nations actions. You must first close a book before you can start a new one.
Aang needed Zuko just as Zuko needed him because to get peace a true lasting peace you can’t just cut off the head of a snake you have to change its mind. The world already lost the air nomads the balance is already precarious, it cannot afford to lose the fire nation too.
Afterall Air can snuff out a flame and it can also fan them. But when the two elements are balanced one existing in peace with the other it can also make a warm hearth for the home.

Someone called Ozai "temper tantrum man", and I was going to comment on that with some sort of "Yes, but"...but then I realized that there is no "yes" to that.
He's not a tantrum person.
He has a temper, yes, but the guy doesn't freak out. Ever. Not even once. And it's a trait I hadn't considered about him, but it's so terrifyingly brilliant.
-Zuko speaks out. He just drags him off to the disciplinary Agni-Kai
-Zuko tells him Azula lied and the Avatar's alive. He just snarls at Zuko and tells him to get out, then starts goading the kid to attack him with swords while he doesn't have his own firebending
-Aang blows up his airship, and he just flies down and starts gloating about how favored he is by the universe
-Aang unlocks the Avatar State and grabs Ozai's beard, and Ozai counterattacks in the blink of an eye
-Aang nearly kills him and Ozai scoffs about how Aang is weak
-Aang takes his bending and Ozai throws punches until he realizes he's exhausted
-A bunch of teenagers start making fun of him and Ozai (still exhausted) pathetically protests before falling over
-Zuko comes to see him in jail and Ozai hits him with snark
The writing on that man is insane when you think about how cold he is.

Vice President Harry S. Truman playing the piano as 20-year-old actress Lauren Bacall looks on at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on February 10, 1945. Later in life, Truman would tell a biographer that: "My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician -- and, to tell the truth, there's hardly a difference."
At roughly the exact same time, approximately 5,259 miles away from Washington, D.C., the big three Allied leaders of World War II -- British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt (whose health was rapidly failing) -- were wrapping up their monumental summit at the Yalta Conference in Crimea to discuss plans for the post-war division and occupation of a defeated Nazi Germany.
Tumblr media
Two months later, on April 12, 1945, President Roosevelt was dead and Truman succeeded to the Presidency after his brief Vice Presidency. Before April was over, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler were also dead, the United Nations had been officially established, Allied troops began finding and liberating concentration camps, and the war in Europe ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany in early May. All of these remarkable historic events occurred within a matter of weeks, and sometimes just a few days or even a few hours apart.
