Survey for travel guides reveals startling ignorance about nation’s musical history

ONE in five Britons is unaware that the Beatles came from Liverpool, according to a survey into the nation’s knowledge of music history.

Two in five do not know that Oasis hail from Manchester, and more than half have no idea that the British punk scene originated in London.

The survey of more than 2,000 adults was conducted on behalf of National Rail to mark the launch of a new set of travel guides exploring Britain’s musical heritage.

Jo Whiley, the Radio 2 presenter, narrates the stories of 30 cities and the “music gems” they contain.

They range from the well-known, such as the Cavern Club in Liverpool, to the more obscure. [..]

Doncaster gets its own guide as the home of former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson and singer Tony Christie.

So I want to start shipping the different train operating companies together:

Let me start off with Scotrail. I think that Scotrail is definitely Aro Ace. She is happy doing her own thing, and live in a cold hut in the middle of the snow and the heavy winds. Both LNER and Avanti keep approaching Scotrail but Scotrail is completely uninterested in their approaches and wish that they would leave her alone.

Made a turn by King's Cross to have a look at their relatively new family waiting room on my trip to London last week. I was there mainly for the model railway, but the whole set-up is so brilliant I thought it really did warrant a bit more coverage.

Opening in 2022, the family waiting room features a variety of seating areas and a play area to keep children entertained while they wait for their train, and its design includes lots of references to the heritage of the East Coast Main Line, aiming to pique the interest of young travellers in the hope that it might bloom into a career in the rail industry. In all honesty, the thinking does seem a little cliche and almost politicised, but I still love the idea of a place where some thought is put into the experience of travel in an age when experience isn't nearly as frequently enough of a consideration as it should be. Raising a family can be challenging, and travelling with one even more so, so if we want to encourage families to travel at all, let alone by public transport, then putting the effort into creating places where children can be engaged and occupied during periods of waiting can go a long way to help.

I don't understand why sometimes trains will be coupled with 2 or more multiple units in such a way that you can't walk through the whole train. I think it would be more satisfactory to run more frequent, shorter trains instead.They did this once on a train from London to Sheffield and I spent the first part in a very anxious state because the part of the train I was in wouldn't be going to Sheffield as the train would divide, so I had to haul my luggage some way down the platform and back onto the right part of the train at the next stop. I think it's acceptable for stopping services if all units go to the same destination. Another thing is that if this is done, you have a long train, but passengers are still limited to the unit they've chosen to board so on crowded services it becomes way more difficult to find a seat. TLDR: If units are to be doubled up, it's better to make it possible to move through the whole of the train, especially if the train will divide.

Part 2 in me shipping different Train operating companies together. I totally see Avanti West Coast, while always trying to reach out Scotrail eventually settling down for her younger, and calmer brother Caledonian Sleeper and to be honest, they make a great couple, they share so much track.

I guess as Avanti is trying to introduce bi-mode engines I would say that Avanti is bi, but really has a really weird thing for the Scottish Rail Holdings family
