Title: Crossed Wires
Marshall had never been good at relationships. Too much time spent in the studio, too much baggage, too much… him. But somehow, you had slipped past his defenses. You were sharp, funny, and way too young for him. Young enough that when you first met, he’d almost walked away on principle.
But you weren’t just some girl chasing after the infamous Eminem. You saw him—Marshall, the man behind the music, the one who never quite figured out how to balance fame and real life. And somehow, despite his reluctance, despite the age gap, despite everything… he couldn’t stay away.
That’s why your relationship was a secret. One he hadn’t even told his daughters about.
So when you showed up at Hailie’s house on a Saturday afternoon, dressed casually with a bottle of wine in hand, the last person you expected to lock eyes with was Marshall Mathers. And by the way his face paled, he sure as hell wasn’t expecting you either.
“What the f—” He barely caught himself as his gaze darted between you and Hailie, who was cheerfully introducing you to some other friends.
You felt your stomach drop. “You’re… you’re her dad?”
He blinked. “You know Hailie?”
“Of course, I know Hailie! She’s my friend from college!”
Marshall ran a hand down his face, as if hoping this was some insane fever dream. “You gotta be shittin’ me.”
Hailie, still oblivious to the fact that a literal crisis was unfolding in front of her, grinned. “Dad! I didn’t know you knew Y/N!”
Oh, he knew you. Intimately.
Your eyes were screaming at him to say something, but he was still frozen in place.
“I, uh… yeah,” he finally mumbled. “I know her.”
Hailie beamed. “Small world, huh?”
You and Marshall shared a look, both internally panicking but externally forcing the most awkward smiles of your lives.
Yeah. Too small.
Marshall hadn’t felt this kind of panic since the last time he bombed on stage.
You could practically see the gears in his head jamming as he forced a stiff nod and stuffed his hands in his hoodie pockets like some awkward teenager. Meanwhile, you were fighting every instinct to grab his arm and drag him into the nearest empty room for an emergency damage-control meeting.
But that would be suspicious.
So instead, you forced a bright smile, praying Hailie didn’t notice how your voice cracked when you said, “Yeah, totally a small world!”
Marshall, for his part, just grunted. Classic.
And just like that, the party went on.
Except now, you and Marshall were stuck in some twisted game of social survival, forced to act like two people who had not spent last weekend tangled up in his bed. And to make things worse? Hailie was curious.
“So how exactly do you guys know each other?” she asked, plopping down on the couch next to you with a beer in hand.
Marshall, standing across the room, immediately pulled out his phone. A second later, yours vibrated.
M: wtf do we say
You forced a laugh. “Oh, you know… mutual friends.”
Hailie raised an eyebrow. “Like who?”
Your phone buzzed again.
M: GIVE HER A NAME WTF
Your mind scrambled before blurting out, “Um, Nathan?”
Marshall’s head snapped up, eyes wide. “Nate?”
Hailie looked skeptical. “My uncle Nate?”
Your phone vibrated so fast you swore it might catch fire.
M: yOU KNOW MY BROTHER??
You resisted the urge to glare at him. Not helping.
“Uh, yeah! I met Nate once,” you said, nodding way too enthusiastically. “At, um… a bar?”
Hailie squinted. “Nate doesn’t drink.”
God. Damn. It.
Your phone buzzed again.
M: you are the WORST at this
You swallowed hard. “Right, I meant, like… a coffee bar?”
Hailie blinked. “A Starbucks?”
Marshall coughed violently, probably to cover a laugh, and you shot him a do not start with me look.
“Yeah! Totally Starbucks,” you said, scrambling. “And we just… you know, started talking, and then I met your dad, and yeah.”
Hailie still looked suspicious, but before she could interrogate you further, someone called her name from across the room. She pointed two fingers at her eyes, then at you. “I will be circling back to this.”
As soon as she walked away, you whipped out your phone.
You: We’re so bad at this
M: I know. We need to escape
You: We can’t. That would look even weirder.
M: …then we suffer.
You sighed, stealing a glance at Marshall, who was staring at his beer like it held all the answers to this nightmare.
Yeah. Suffering it was.
---
Marshall had survived rap battles, lawsuits, and the entire Machine Gun Kelly incident, but nothing—nothing—had prepared him for Hailie’s suspicious glare as she cornered him in the kitchen.
“So,” she started, popping open another beer. “You and Y/N, huh?”
Marshall, who had been quietly texting you under the table, immediately locked his phone and shoved it in his pocket like a guilty teenager. “What about us?”
Hailie leaned against the counter, arms crossed. “You tell me.”
Marshall played it cool, taking a slow sip of his drink. “She said we met through Nate.”
Hailie nodded. “Right. At a coffee bar.”
“…Yeah.”
“She doesn’t drink coffee.”
Marshall choked on his beer. “What?”
“She literally hates it. The smell, the taste, all of it. She orders hot chocolate when we go to Starbucks.”
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He already knew it was you, probably panicking.
You: SOS. SHE’S ASKING QUESTIONS.
Marshall took a deep breath. “Uh, well… maybe she was there for, I dunno, tea or some shit?”
Hailie narrowed her eyes. “You don’t drink coffee either.”
“Okay, what is this, the FBI?” he grumbled, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I just think it’s weird,” she said, studying him like a science experiment. “You never mentioned knowing her, and she never mentioned knowing you. And you”—she pointed at him—“are acting sketchy as hell.”
His phone buzzed again.
You: She smells fear. ABORT.
Marshall sighed, running a hand down his face. “Look, we’ve met a couple times. She’s cool. That’s it.”
Hailie hummed in a way that let him know she definitely wasn’t buying it. “Right. Just a couple times.”
“Yep.”
“Not, like, a lot of times?”
“Nope.”
“Not, like… at your house times?”
Marshall took another long sip of beer, avoiding eye contact. “Hailie, I swear to God—”
“I’m just saying,” she interrupted, smirking now. “You’re acting real weird over a ‘mutual friend.’”
His phone buzzed one more time.
You: Are we about to get caught?
He sighed, already feeling a headache coming on.
M: Probably.
---
You didn’t mean to break. You really didn’t. But Hailie was staring at you with that look—the one she used when she knew someone was full of shit. And you were. So full of shit.
It was only a matter of time before she cracked you open like a damn walnut.
So you did the only thing you could. You exhaled sharply, set down your drink, and muttered, “Okay, fine. You wanna know the truth?”
Hailie’s eyebrows shot up. Marshall, who had just entered the room, froze mid-step. “Y/N—” he started, warning in his tone.
“No, she’s right,” you interrupted, shaking your head. “This is stupid. The real story? We met on Tinder.”
Dead silence.
Marshall visibly cringed, dragging a hand down his face. “Oh, for fuck’s sake—”
“A year ago,” you continued, ignoring him. “We started hooking up, then going on actual dates, and now… I guess we’re, like, dating-dating?”
Hailie’s jaw actually dropped. You didn’t blame her.
“You met my dad on Tinder?!”
Marshall groaned, rubbing his temples. “Jesus Christ.”
“We didn’t know we both knew you!” you added quickly. “We never thought to, like, cross-reference our lives because—”
“Because why the fuck would I ever think to ask if my girlfriend is friends with my daughter?” Marshall muttered, pacing now.
Hailie blinked, looking between the two of you like she was witnessing some kind of twisted social experiment. Then, to both of your shock, she burst out laughing.
Like, full-on, can’t-breathe, tears-in-her-eyes laughing.
You and Marshall just stared.
“Oh my God,” she wheezed, gripping the counter. “You two are the dumbest people I have ever met.”
Marshall scowled. “Wow. Thanks.”
“No, really.” She wiped her eyes, still laughing. “Dad, you don’t date. You literally never date. And you”—she pointed at you—“don’t do Tinder hookups! How the hell did this even happen?”
You shrugged helplessly. “Honestly? No idea.”
Hailie shook her head, grinning. “I mean, it’s weird, but… holy shit, I’m so glad I got to watch you both absolutely crumble under pressure. That was amazing.”
Marshall just groaned, finally sinking into a chair. But under the frustration, you saw something else—guilt.
And you knew why.
After a beat, he sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Look, Hailie… I didn’t mean to lie to you.”
She softened a little, still smiling but more understanding now. “I know.”
“I just—” He sighed again. “I didn’t know how to bring it up. And by the time I thought about it, it already felt too late.”
Hailie nodded. “I get it. But, like… you know you can just tell me things, right? Especially if they involve someone I actually know?”
Marshall chuckled dryly. “Yeah. Noted.”
She shook her head again, still grinning. “I cannot wait to tell Nate and Lainey about this.”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake, no.”

When a non-descript University’s development plans involve the destruction of all “degenerate" and "unnecessary” clubs and societies, one Frat-star and his house of "Himbos" must team up with a "Theater Dad" and his underdog squad of the theatre department in order to save their home.

Nathan: Dad I've decided I'm going to be gay when I grow up!
Cyclops: You did, huh? Well, it's nice you've tought about this and there will be many choices you'll make as you're growing up but being gay isn't one of them.
Nathan: It's not?
Cyclops: Nope. When you're older you're going to be who you are and our job is to love and support you no mather what that is. But if you decide to be republican, we're definitely going to have a talk about that.

Part Seventy-Two
Summary: Baldwin Montclair had a string of ex girlfriends, a single child, and a lifetime longer than most people could dream of to make all kinds of mistakes. His family knew one which kept coming out of the woodwork to irritate him every other century

Sophie smiled five seconds before the door opened and an orderly stepped into the hospital room. 'I was wondering when you were going to come say hello.'
Nathan glanced nervously between his wife and the vampire, but Sophie squeezed his hand reassuringly. 'He's okay. He's been keeping the darkness at bay in my dreams for a while now.'
'We have to go, we don't have much time.' The young man pulled a silver chain out from under his collar, holding out a large ring for Nathan to inspect. It was made of silver and divided in four, the squares containing a tiny pair of shears, hands praying, a boar's head and a cross worked from emerald.
'You're a Knight.' Nathan's posture slumped in relief. 'That's Martin's crest. Is he your maker?'
'Yes.' Jack Blackfriars smiled and put the ring away. 'I'm sorry but we need to leave. Peter Knox has found out about your daughter and he'll be here at any moment.'
'How did he find out?' asked Sophie, nursing Margaret as Nathan dashed around the room collecting their things.
'Knox has spies everywhere.' And my cousin has a big mouth.
'That's us packed but my wife, she can't walk-'
'I brought a wheelchair for her.' Jack fetched it from the corridor and he and Nathan helped Sophie lower herself into it. As they left the room Agatha Wilson came barrelling around the corner, Vera Lindberg hot on her heels.
'Mum!'
'Don't talk, we haven't got time.' Agatha put her hand on her son's shoulder and waved him forward. 'If Knox is coming, you need to go.'
Jack led the charge from the front, pushing Sophie and Margaret while Nathan and Agatha managed the bags and Vera kept an eye open on their rear. There was a black 1959 DeSoto Adventurer with government plates parked discreetly by the hospital's back entrance and Agatha put the luggage in the trunk as Vera slid gracefully into the driver's seat and Nathan helped strap Sophie and Margaret in.
'I love you both,' Agatha hugged her son firmly, lent into the car to give Sophie an awkward one-armed hug, and pressed a kiss to her granddaughter's forehead. 'She's so precious...take care of each other. I'll see you after this is all over, I promise you!'
'Love you too Mum,' Nathan got into the car, put on his seat belt and squeezed his wife's hand. Agatha stepped back and waved goodbye as the car pulled away from the curb and drove down the street.

Emily Mather woke up with an insisting need to not be in bed. She'd been so relieved when Sarah had agreed to let her try one last time to contact Rebecca's spirit with her present that she'd wanted to try that night but Sarah had asked her to wait until morning.
Now that urge were pressing on her, pushing her forward.
She'd reached the ground floor before she'd knew it, carefully unbolting the side door and stepping over the threshold-
Emily gasped, icy wind engulfing her.
'Stop.'
The spirit was young, about eighteen or nineteen. She was wearing a red medieval dress and riding boots; the only hint as to the violent nature of her death was the fact that her hair was braided and hanging over each shoulder instead of being pinned up properly in a loop.
'Wh-who-who-' Emily stuttered, swallowing so she could start again. 'Who are you?'
'Yvette,' the young woman curtsied politely. 'Do not go into the castle grounds.'
Emily winced, clutching her head. She was starting to develop a pounding headache. An enchantment...I'm under an enchantment.
'Who did this to me?!'
'Knox.' Yvette's eyes narrowed. 'He's waiting for you by the stone circle.'
Emily gasped, jumping backwards from the open door. Yvette watched her keenly, especially when the next wave of pain spiked through her brain, threatening to turn her headache into a migraine.
'Go.' Yvette pointed back up the stairs. 'Your wife can fix you.'
'Thank you!' Emily gasped, and dashed back to the bedroom.
***
Peter Knox was growing impatient.
The witch should have shown up by now, and yet he found himself standing alone in the clearing. As he reached in his pocket for his petrosphere to cast the enchantment again, the temperature suddenly plunged to freezing.
'Who-who's there?' Peter's teeth chattered.
The first spirit was a young woman barely out of her teens. Everywhere she slithered frost crystallised in her wake.
She's powerful...too powerful to bind..
'What d-do you want?' Knox asked, his hands clamped up under his arms to stop them developing frost bite.
'We want you to leave our home.' The second spirit stepped out as though they had been standing in perfect silhouette behind the first. The man's face was wild with fury, and sent a ring of recognition clanging in the back of Peter's mind.
Hugh de Clermont
'I won't leave.' Peter shook, standing his ground.
Yvette and Hugh simply stood for a moment, watching him, before turning and walking a pace until they were flanking him. Peter's breathing turned gasping; it felt like there was ice forming in his mouth, his joints, his blood.
Movement caught his eye. Another ghost stepped into the clearing.
Peter forced himself to breathe so he could say something, anything. 'Please-'
Rebecca reached into his chest and shattered his heart.
Author's Note
"The function of real-world petrospheres is debated, with suggestions that they were used as projectiles or primitive weights, oracles to interpret messages from the gods, or ‘right to speak’ objects that temporarily imbue the person holding them with power. That last one would no doubt appeal to a character like Knox, who is driven by his obsession with the supremacy of the witch species." - Den of Geek

Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, died Monday, December 2, from complications related to lung cancer. She was 69 years old. Representatives for the artist confirmed the news, which brings an end to a complex and often strained relationship that has been a part of his music and public life. Eminem, whose birth name is Marshall Mathers, has yet to utter a word about his mother's demise. His younger half-brother, Nathan "Nate" Mathers, did express the feelings of "hatred and mixed emotions" on hearing of the news. This behavior reflects the layered and mostly turbulent history between Debbie and her sons. Eminem has often expressed himself about his feelings towards his mother in his songs, usually channeling anger and frustration through his words. His 2002 hit "Cleanin' Out My Closet" was especially caustic, with the lyrics accusing Debbie of neglect, prescription drug abuse, and selfish behavior. The song included scurrilous lines calling her a "selfish b***h" and wishing she "burn in hell." These sentiments inflamed a public feud between mother and son, ending with Debbie filing a lawsuit against Eminem for slander and defamation. The lawsuit was eventually settled for $25,000 in 2001. DoD News Features, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Despite the commercial success of "Cleanin' Out My Closet," the song became a source of regret for the rapper. By 2013, he had stopped performing it altogether, and his last live rendition took place at Leeds Festival in England. That same year, Eminem released "Headlights," a deeply personal track that served as an openhearted apology to his mother. The song starts acknowledging the hurt that his prior words had caused, as he rapped: "Mom, I know I let you down.I went in headfirst, never thinkin' about who, what I said hurt.In what verse, my mom probably got it the worst." In "Headlights," Eminem tells how he is sorry he has portrayed his mother, regarding his previous music"'Cleanin' Out My Closet' and all them other songs. But nevertheless, I don't despise you 'cause ma, You're still gorgeous to me, 'cause you're my mom." The apology then is made clearer in the later parts of the song when he refers directly to the remorse of the notorious diss-track: "I'm sorry mama for 'Cleanin' Out My Closet,' at the time I was mad.".Rightfully maybe so, never meant that far to take it though, 'cause. Now I know it's not your fault, and I'm not making jokes. That song I no longer play at shows, and I cringe every time it's on the radio. Since releasing "Headlights," Eminem has stuck to his guns on the issue and has refused to play "Cleanin' Out My Closet" during his live shows. His apology goes beyond lip service because he speaks about wanting to forgive and even showing love for his mom:"But, Ma, I forgive you, so does Nathan, yo.All you did, all you said, you did your best to raise us both.".Foster care, that cross you bear, few may be as heavy as yours. But I love you, Debbie Mathers." Eminem's relationship with his mother was one of the central themes throughout his career. Sometimes it was inspiration, and sometimes it was conflict, but throughout his songs, he found time to change his perspective and eventually reconcile with the fact that they both faced challenges. As the fans and the music industry are processing news of Debbie Nelson's passing, her legacy lives on with her complicated relationship with her son, as through his music, Eminem has been painting a raw and unfiltered picture of their dynamic-from anger and estrangement to remorse and forgiveness. Title: Lose Yourself in Us (Part 31)
You’re all sitting in the quiet of the hospital room now—finally together.
The soft sounds of your baby’s tiny breaths are the only thing you hear, apart from the faint hum of the machines that keep you tethered to this fragile moment.
Marshall sits beside you, his arm around you, and his girls crowd around, all of you basking in the peaceful warmth of having your son finally in your arms.
But there’s still one thing left unsaid.
The name.
You glance down at the little bundle in your arms, your heart swelling with a love so deep, so fierce it almost hurts. And then, quietly, you ask—
“So… what do we call him?”
Marshall’s gaze shifts to you, his jaw clenching as he glances at his son, then back at you.
“I—” He starts, then stops himself, exhaling heavily. “I didn’t like the name Nathan anymore. Not after… everything.” His voice cracks, and he clears his throat. “But I couldn’t name him without you.”
You blink, surprised, and feel your heart skip a beat.
He waited for me.
Your eyes meet his, a soft smile tugging at your lips. “So, our son’s been ‘Baby Boy Mathers’ for three weeks? Marshall!”
Marshall winces, looking down at his lap, clearly feeling a little guilty for not pulling the trigger on a name sooner. “I wasn’t ready, okay? I didn’t wanna name him wrong.”
You laugh softly, pressing a kiss to the top of your baby’s head. “You couldn’t have named him wrong. He’s perfect.”
Just then, Alaina leans in, a small grin tugging at the corner of her mouth. “I’ve been thinking,” she says, her voice playful but sincere. “You got lucky, Marshall. So I think he should be called Patrick.”
Hailie and Whitney both raise their eyebrows, looking at her like she’s lost her mind.
“Patrick?” Hailie repeats, incredulous.
“Yeah,” Alaina grins. “You know, ‘cause you’ve got a lot of luck left in you. You both do.”
Marshall stares at her, blinking in confusion for a moment, then a smile tugs at the corners of his lips. “Patrick, huh?”
You chuckle softly, rubbing your baby’s back. “I like it.”
Marshall looks at the little face in your arms again, the weight of the decision finally settling in. “Yeah, I think it suits him.”
A pause.
“You think Patrick Mathers has a nice ring to it?” you ask with a grin.
Marshall smiles, his eyes soft as he gazes down at his son.
“Yeah,” he replies, his voice low and full of something you can’t quite name. “Yeah, I do.”
And with that, the name settles over you both like a promise.
Patrick Mathers.
Your son.
The love of your life.
And for the first time in a long time—everything is exactly where it’s meant to be.

Who would you put in an American statue garden? Assume no limit for how many
all the best presidents (i won't name them all but just to list a few: washington, adams, j. q. adams, jefferson, madison, monroe, fdr, teddy roosevelt, lincoln, etc), franklin, alexander hamilton, friedrich list, henry clay, henry carey, samuel adams, ethan allen, thomas young, john jay, james wilson, gouverneur morris, christopher columbus (tbh i'm tempted to include figures like leif erikson and prince madoc because even though they were never americans, like columbus, there is a mythopoetic/cultural value), lafayette, john winthrop, cotton mather, nathanael greene, friedrich wilhem von steuben, nathan hale, johnny appleseed, emperor norton, robert e. lee, william tecumseh sherman, daniel boone, lewis and clark, sacagawea, davy crockett, emerson, thoreau, walt whitman, longfellow, hilda doolittle, emily dickinson, nikola tesla, einstein, eli whitney, abigail adams, edgar allen poe, john brown, herman melville, butch cassidy, wyatt earp, doc holliday, wild bill hickok, sundance kid, john henry, andrew carnegie, nathaniel hawthorne, washington irving, horace mann, john dewey, wernher von braun, j. robert oppenheimer, john marshall, wiliam penn, junipero sera, john d. rockefeller, clara barton, fanny wright, thomas edison, alexandar graham bell, ezra pound, kerouac, william faulkner, steinbeck, hemingway, dolley madison, john muir, annie oakley, lovecraft, eleanor roosevelt, john browning, samuel colt, elvis presley, claude shannon, henry miller, kanye west, stanley kubrick, john von neumann, thorstein veblen, edward bellamy, henry ford, cornelius vanderbilt, betsy ross, black hawk, sitting bull, tecumseh, hart crane, h. l. mencken, tennessee williams, charles sanders peirce, william james, quine, hilary putnam, richard rorty, charles hartshorne, walt disney, mark twain, etc.
#this list probably isn't exhaustive#well it definitely isn't#but i tried to be pretty thorough#also in this hypothetical statue garden#i would probably make a section dedicated to non-americans#that i consider honorary americans#or people who i believe are influential or important to the american tradition#or just people i consider great and worthy of admiration#like cicero and cato and aristotle and homer and aeschylus and hercules#or john milton or cromwell or napoleon#or machiavelli or montesquieu#yeah i know you said there could be no limit#but i could probably go on for a long time#so i'm just gonna have to leave this list how it is for now

The Phantom of the Opera
Michael Crawford, Rebecca Caine, Steve Barton October 10, 1987; London Listed as being Michael Crawford and Steve Barton's last before heading to New York to start rehearsals for Broadway. Beautiful soundboard audio. This is the complete version; there has previously been an incomplete one traded out.
Eiji Akutagawa, Kyoko Suzuki, Kanji Ishimaru September 22, 1991; Osaka Always here for Japanese love.
Hans Peter Janssens, Susanne Duwe, Michael Shawn Lewis, An Lauwreins, William Lynn Dixon, Marc Meersman, Arnst van Looy, Stephanie Tscheppe June 2, 2000; Antwerp, Belgium Final show in Belgium. Very nice cast all around.
Hugh Panaro, Adrienne McEwan, John Cudia, Patricia Phillips, Jeff Keller, George Lee Andrews, Marilyn Caskey, Larry Wayne Morbitt, Heather McFadden June 16, 2003; Broadway Hugh in his second Broadway run. Adrienne has become a favorite of mine and I think she never gets the credit she deserves, especially having been in the show for so long.
Hugh Panaro, Susan Owen (u/s), Kyle Barisich February 20, 2012; Broadway A lovely audio. Susan has such a sweet, light quality to her voice.
Hugh Panaro, Samantha Hill, Kyle Barisich, Michele McConnell, Greg Mills (u/s), Tim Jerome, Nathan Patrick Morgan (u/s), Carly Blake Sebouhian (u/s) April 6, 2013; Broadway More Hugh. You can never have enough Hugh.

With John as Raoul this time!
Scott Davies, Kelly Mathieson, Jeremy Taylor, Lara Martins, Sean Lloyd, Mark Oxtoby, Jacinta Mulcahy May 31, 2018; London This is labeled as having Ben Lewis, but if you listen it’s really Scott.

She sounds absolutely divine. An absolutely gorgeous cast.
Jonathan Roxmouth, Meghan Picerno, Matt Leisy September 3, 2019; Tel Aviv One of Meghan's last shows on the World Tour before she joined the Broadway company. Jonathan and Meghan sound particularly stunning on here, they keep getting better which is insane because they are already so good.
