Watching The Beantown Bailout Job with the directors commentary on and they point out very early on that Sophie and Eliot become an axis point to the team, in addition to 'the kids' (being Eliot, Parker, and Hardison) and Sophie and Nate's whole thing

And it really does become such an important hinge for the entire group. Each dynamic has it's own thing but early on Sophie and Eliot fall into a rhythm of understanding and trust and it develops through the rest of the series (and into Redemption)

Eliot is Nate's "attack dog" but he's also the rest of the team's guard dog, he puts himself between Nate and the rest of them over and over.

Sophie smooths the rough patches while drawing Nate's fire on herself because she needles him and calls out his bullshit.

Even in season one, though, even during the David jobs, Eliot pops up behind Sophie when she's presenting an idea to Nate (especially at the start of the David jobs, actually)

And that carries all the way through into Redemption.

They could have played it romantically as a foil for Nate, but they didn't. They could have played every single character in this show differently and it would have changed the vibe - but they didn't. (Honestly after Maggie if anything had happened between Sophie and Eliot I reckon Nate actually would have turned murderous. But it never reads that way from either one of them, to me)

They had Eliot and Sophie bounce off mutual respect and trust, playful flirting and banter, stepping in to back the other and guide everyone in their own ways.

I could go in forever talking about the different relationships between this whole team, but Sophie and Eliot's whole dynamic is just such a fun thing to watch and is one of my favourites

Nathan “Nate” Schmidt Headcanons

Ah yes, Mr. Nathan “Where does he live” Schmidt himself

He’s a human, not really anything special about him (or his new best friend, Marcus “Mark” Vincent for that matter)

Likes to tell people that he met the animatronics while he had a bazooka to make himself seem cool, but the truth of it is far sadder (and canon compliant!)

Cares VERY much for them ever since they hijacked his car to get back to Freddy’s

If Freddy says anything about “raisins” he knows it’s serious, it’s like their own little code word

Been around them for long enough for him to be able to understand Foxy fluently

Loves cartoons and anime, his favorites being Steven Universe, Tokyo Ghoul and Demon Slayer

Actually does have a collection of weapons- just no bazooka

He won’t admit it, but Mark admires it

Nate learned how to fight after practically adopted the Freddy’s gang, he’s gotta protect his “kids”

He met Mad when he had accidentally found his “house” (see: abandoned home that Mad had just lived in and did experiments in)

Mad was going to kill Nate at first, but he made the decision that this guy could be useful to him in the future

Nate is an incredible stalker and hacker

How else do you think he found out where Mark lived and was able to control BB?

Speaking of BB, Nate was heartbroken when BB was destroyed

That little guy was the best he was demolished

Nate may be a great hacker, but a fixer he is not

Mad always made Nate feel uneasy in a way, like the man wasn’t human

He wanted to become a musician for the longest time, but his music never made it off the ground sadly, so to Mad’s job offer he turned

The first time he met Mark, he was a little wary of the guy. He was holding a knife to Freddy’s throat, who wouldn’t be on guard?

Really tries his hardest for everyone he knows

Due to working the night shift for a long time, Nate’s sleep schedule is permanently messed up- he feels the most awake and active at night now

Wears contacts to see now as his glasses started giving him frequent headaches

Suffers from insomnia, migraines, and anxiety

I'll never get over the fact that Near sculpts new puppets to represent any added personnel to the Kira case BUT NOT LIGHT

He just keeps using that default cheeky ass cartoonish puppet to represent Kira. Even after he's certain Light was Kira, he still refuses to sculpt Light 🤣 boyo was not giving Light his time of day

(Even Takada Kiyomi who Near explicitly dislikes gets a personal puppet)

i'm still very sad they didn't do anything at all in season 3 with the Nate & Roy dynamic they'd been building off in the background for the first two seasons, because the layers there were really fascinating.

Starting with like, Roy being the only one to vocally and actively stand up for Nate in season one. At the time I think Nate was appreciative, but I think in hindsight, (rightly or wrongly) it quickly morphs into this mindset that Roy is sort of patronizing and has long viewed him as this weak thing in need of protecting. It feels (in Nate's mind), like Roy swept in to play the savior when it convinced him, but even that was based more around his hatred of Jamie than it was about liking Nate. And we see Nate later think himself proven correct in that thinking after he kisses Keeley and confesses and Roy...barely reacts. Roy, who is furious and angry about everything and everyone every day of his life, is suddenly like "Oh it's fine" when Nate has kissed his girlfriend. Nick Mohammed's commentary that Nate actively saw that as a micro-aggression was so fascinating and makes a lot of sense.

Then you have Roy, who did see season one Nate as someone to protect, but then was also driven to his best performance on the pitch during his final season by Nate's no-bullshit speech before the Everton game. That scene is so effective because it's such a jarring departure for the entire team from how they've previously viewed Nate, and it works for Roy especially because Roy respects people who don't give in to the intimidation he's constantly goading them with and instead tells it to him straight, no words minced (this is why Roy gets along so well with people like Rebecca, Keeley, and Ted, and why the breakthrough moment with Jamie is Jamie calling him out at the gala, etc.). I think there IS a part of Roy that doesn't respect Nate in season 1, which is why he later reacts how he does to Nate's kiss with Keeley, and it's a mindset he's vindicated by when Nate turns on Ted. But that also gets all mixed up with moments like the Everton, with the evidence of Nate being such a good strategist that Roy later finds himself deeply envious of after becoming a coach himself.

During the time they are both coaching together, there's a dynamic there where they both (I think) believe the other person doesn't take them seriously, and it's rooted in a little bit of truth (on both sides!!) that's then wildly exacerbated by their own insecurities. Like, Nate is intimated by the fact that Roy is this rich famous hotshot publicly beloved, so that it feels way out of Nate's league to even be interacting with him. At the same time, he also thinks Roy is a bit of an asshole who doesn't see him as a threat because he doesn't take him seriously, and is (fairly) offended by it. Meanwhile, Roy is intimated by Nate because Nate is so clearly so intelligent, which I think is something Roy is insecure about in general, given his own education being superseded early on by football. He sees Nate as being a more adequate coach than himself because of this. But he also thinks Nate is spineless and whatever respect he had for him (fairly) dissolves completely after Nate goes to the press about Ted.

So it's like, this messy mixture where they both have something the other desperately wants but they can't see at all why the other would possibly be envious of them due to their own insecurities. They are, imo, the two most insecure people on the show in completely different ways. They hate themselves far more than they hate each other, yet they displace the weight of that feeling onto each other; Roy by treating Nate with indifference and Nate by dismissing Roy in his head as an asshole hotshot whose had a great life handed to him and doesn't even appreciate it, whereas Nate has to fight tooth and nail to find success. And it all boils down to them not understanding one another while also having a lot in common under the surface.

Anyway, I think it would be super interesting to see how their friendship or even just their relationship as coworkers develops after season 3, as they both make active attempts at overcoming their insecurities and doing better by themselves and each other.

It states that Nate's POV is stared in most stories (which is true in fact), and that his perspective is considered 'valued' due to his looks (egotistical much, Nate?)

"So now I'm holding myself hostage, Stockholm lust just looks like justice."

'To hold oneself hostage' usually means to stick to one’s own beliefs and viewpoints so obsessively that no other opinion is even considered, and 'Stockholm Syndrome' refers to when a victim begins to trust or feel affection towards their kidnapper.

So I'm guessing it means that Nate is so self-absorbed that it only seems fair for him to cling to his own beliefs and not listen to anyone else, because he think he's sooo amazing (keep dreaming).

"I'm the main character and you have to like me."

Literally his confidence going through the roof. He's staying that he HAS to be liked since he's the main character.

"Villains are everywhere, that's how I know that I'm the hero."

The song shows that villains are all around Nate, which is true considering the amount of enemies he has. From that perception, he concludes that's he's the hero, even though he doesn't count everyone's points of view of people.

In his original home universe, thousands of beings like Daniel (known as the Divine) lived in peace with humans, working towards a greater prosperity for all until war broke out.

The war began between Divine and humans, but soon they all turned on each other. Brother against brother, friend against friend until the Divine's arrogance and intent to survive began to tear the very fabric of their universe apart. Divine Verse was ultimately destroyed.

Daniel escaped due to a seemingly unique ability he possessed to pass between universes, though he had little control of where he ended up and passed through countless universes before he came to a stop.

He only stopped running when he encountered the Colonel and Jameson Jackson who seemed to understand the devastation he'd seen without him ever needing to verbalise it.

Daniel joined their crusade to find their friend Damien, happily providing safe passage and greater insight into the various universes they would encounter.

Writer's fave fact

Daniel is meant to be a reflection of Phantom. Where Phantom is a being of greed, sin, and temptation who despite being young had to mature very quickly, Daniel is a being of Divinity, pure intent, and community who despite being incredibly old is actually very youthful and inexperienced, especially when compared to those he currently travels with (Colonel and JJ).

While all the Battlers seem connected, there is something very unique between Phantom and Daniel.
