In the history of protests and movements regarding climate change, the one mass movement that will be highlighted is the ‘Nirmala Bachao Andolan’ initiated by Medha Patkar.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) was a mass movement in India that shaped environmentalism and climate change for future claims.

Medha Patkar was the core body that mobilized massive marches and rallies against the construction of the Sardar Sarovar Dam that would displace thousands of tribal people and mutilate the vast land of forests and farmlands.

Nothing has changed: 1999 – 2021

Don’t quote me on this for I do not want to be killed, but Narendra Modi is the reincarnation of Nathuram Godse.

All the best writings only come bubbling into your mind when you do not want to write. Arundhati Roy’s The Greater Common Good is an essay on feelings you do not want to face and writings you do not want to write. Roy would’ve been 38 years old in 1999. A young angry woman going against the government is not a good look on anyone. My now 42 mother wouldn’t dare.

Roy’s essay outlines all the things that are wrong with development. She specifies she isn’t anti-development per se, just against how things function. Roy has always been fearless in her voice. She puts forward facts with an unnerving sense of emotion. If you weren’t passionate about the Narmada Bachao Andolan before, now you are.

The Greater Common Good was important in 1999 AND is relevant in 2021 because it tackles what the government does to its people in the name of ‘aid, help, and benefit’. The political state of India right now is not much off from the state in the US – Biden or Trump, choose the lesser of the two evils; BJP or Congress, choose the worse or the bad. Roy talks about the displaced tribal people from the dam; Modi imposes horrendous laws on farmers, inevitably displacing their livelihood.

“On the one hand, the Indian Government, every Indian Government, rails self-righteously against the First World, and on the other, actually pays to receive their gift-wrapped garbage. Aid is just another praetorian business enterprise. Like Colonialism was. It has destroyed most of Africa. Bangladesh is reeling from its ministrations. We know all this, in numbing detail. Yet in India, our leaders welcome it with slavish smiles (and make nuclear bombs to shore up their flagging self-esteem).” This is the bane of my existence in the very best of ways.

My personal beef with Roy is that, like every 2nd person, she believes Gandhi is the epitome of freedom and justice. I do respect all that he’s done for India in shooing away the Britishers but that is simply not true. He was a stern casteist and had really skewed ideas about women. Moreover, as an essayist and novelist why didn’t she include the opinions of those actually displaced. We want to have sympathy and empathy, but we also want the affected people to be seen and heard.
