Twin Blades: a Twin Peaks/Yuri!!! on Ice crossover pitch
Note: I have no plans to write this...I have too many WIPs as it is! This is just a fun brainstorm
Fire, Walk With Me Ice, Skate With Me
The cryptic message, written in blood on a piece of notebook paper, was found attached to reigning World Champion Laura Palmer's Sara Crispino’s skates, just minutes after her leg was broken in a brutal assault 1 day prior to the 1994 World Figure Skating Championships. After Nancy Kerrigan, and then Tanja Szewczenko, Sara was the 3rd Ladies Single skater to be attacked in the span of just 1.5 months, and local law enforcement in Portland, Oregon has decided they need to call in reinforcements.
Luckily, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper Viktor Nikiforov is on the job, and though he initially set off with a hankering for cherry pie, all thoughts of the dessert have just been wiped from his mind.
As he and his standard poodle Makkachin enter the town perimeter of Twin Blades (population 51K), Agent Nikiforov continues with the message he's been recording on his tape recorder.
"Diane Yakov, lunch was 9 dollars and 31 cents at the Yu-topia Inn, it's on highway 2 at Lewis Fork. That was a pork cutlet bowl -- called Kat-su-don -- with a side of daikon radish and miso soup. And, a mini katsudon bowl for Makka! Damn good food. Yakov, if you ever get up this way, that katsudon is worth a stop." (At the memory of how the two of them scarfed down the wonderful meal made by Hiroko-san), Viktor lets a heart-shaped smile take over his face before getting back to business.)
"Ok, I'll be meeting up with Sheriff Truman Katsuki -- you know the one...Yakov, if you don't know who that is by now, then you definitely haven't been listening to my tapes, and we'll need to have a word, because I'm counting on your advice to woo Yuuri! I mean really, I'm still in shock that he actually reached out to me through the Bureau like that, but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth...I'm just relieved that I wasn't the only one that had a life-changing experience at that law enforcement conference in Chicago back in December!
Anyways, the two of us are going to go to intensive care, and look in on that Italian skater -- Sara Crispino -- whose leg was broken in that assault last week."
...
Interrogation Room, Twin Blades Sheriff's Department (two days later)
Yuuri and Viktor exchange shrewd glances at Bobby Briggs' Mickey Crispino's rising volume and visible agitation. Viktor feels a thrill of delight rocket up his spine at the eye contact; only yesterday, Yuuri wasn’t even able to look at him, and now, they’re starting to develop a shared body language, all of their own!
“So what if we we fought? Is that a crime, now, to have a fight with my own sister?” Crispino bellows.
Ugh.
Mickey is a wonderful example of why Viktor despises hockey players.
“Mila's nowhere good enough for her, so of course we butt heads from time to time…it's natural for me to get protective over her!” Mickey continues, spit flying every which way. “Maybe I get too bent out of shape when it comes to their relationship, but your insinuation that my jealousy would lead me to attack Sara right before her attempt to defend her title…?! Its’s beyond insulting!”
Viktor is just about to ask a follow-up (and wipe his face), when Deputy Sheriff Andy Guang-Hong knocks on the door. The poor guy's eyes are still very red-rimmed, and once again, Viktor is reminded of how rare violent assaults like Sara’s are in Twin Blades. As he'd explained earlier on the phone to his colleague, forensic analyst Albert Rosenfield Seung-Gil Lee, the town is tiny.
There are really only two lodging options (Yu-topia Inn and the Great Northern Hotel), 1 entertainment venue (The Roadhouse Ice Castle), and 1 food establishment (the Double R Diner) the Double J Diner, run by the Leroys). Industry is the opposite of varied; the town runs on all things winter sports, hockey and figure skating, primarily.
Yuuri's background info on the potential sale of the Packard Sawmill Ice Castle to a visiting delegation of Norwegian Japanese businessmen only lends another layer of mystery to the serial skater attack spree. In addition to why cocaine was found in Sara's diary -- when everyone swears she would never jeopardize a competition disqualification by way of drug use -- and the undoubtable supernatural presence in the woods that only Minako Okukawa truly seems able to grasp, Viktor is well aware that he has his work cut out for him...both on the romance front and work front.
-----
Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows, and b/c I now tend to see Viktuuri in everthing I consume, when I started rewatching season 1 a few weeks back, I couldn't help but start to brainstorm around a possible crossover/AU. If you've watched the show, I'm sure you're well aware that it is very dark, so the figure skating element/YOI ensemble shenanigans would definitely lighten things up (no incest, drug or prostitution rings, only bloodthirsty athletic rivalries, shady business dealings and jaded love).
Here are some other things that came to mind:
-Yuuko as the sole owner of Ice Castle, and loosely based on femme fatale Josie Packard. Since Yuuri is not a skater in this AU, she instead puts all of her energy into encouraging Mila to gain the attention of her skating idol (and eventual girlfriend, Sara)...but is her encouragement truly selfless, or is she a much shrewder business owner than Twin Blades' townspeople give her credit for? And was she involved in the murder of her late husband, Takeshi, as Agent Nikiforov comes to suspect?
-Minako as a slightly less eccentric Lawrence Jacoby. Minako was the first person that Sara confided in when she fell in love with Mila, and it was through Minako that Sara found the courage to be open about her relationship with the rest of her family. Minako is one of the few in Twin Blades that is knowledgeable about the supernatural presences in the forest, and many suspect that her youthful appearance is connected to this
-the Nishigori triplets having the combined mischievousness and cunning of Audrey Horne (Minus the blatant flirting with Agent Cooper Nikiforov, b/c that would be weird). Georgi as the Log Lady Gentleman, lmao. Poor guy...no one can take him seriously
As I note in the title, I probably won't actually write this, but if anyone else is a Peaks fan, please let me know! It's such a bizarre and wonderful world that I love to think about :)
#katsudon is just as good as cherry pie#twin peaks#yuri on ice#yuri!!! on ice#the crossover I wish I had the energy to write#viktuuri#victuuri#Viktor as Agent Dale Cooper#Yuuri as Sheriff Harry Truman#Yakov as Diane#Sara Crispino as Laura Palmer#except she doesn't die#and no evil malevolent BOB#yuri on ice au

I, Tonya (2017)
They could make a hundred movies about Tonya Harding and there would never be another like I, Tonya. This stylish, sometimes exaggerated telling of the figure skater’s story may actually be more authentic than a real-life documentary could ever be.
Cruelly raised by her mother (Allison Janney), skating prodigy Tony Harding (Margot Robbie) suffered years of emotional and physical abuse but nevertheless emerged a champion. The film, based on contradicting testimonies from the Olympic skater, her mother, her no-good husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), his best friend/Tonya’s bodyguard, Shawn Eckhardt (Paul Walter), and her skating coaches explain how it all went to pieces.
If you don’t know the Tonya Harding, you’ll probably be able to piece what’s going to happen to her career about 40 minutes in. That's not a flaw. This film is the rare instance where knowing how it ends actually makes the movie better. Director Craig Gillespie knows why the audience is tuning in. “Tonya Harding? Isn’t she the one who attacked Nancy Kerrigan and bashed her knee with a baton right before the olympics?” Some of that is right but not quite and even if you know what actually happened, this movie’s still got ya. It’s an outrageous tale you’d swear was fiction. I mean, come on. They made Shawn Eckhardt (Paul Walter) into a moron whose head is so thick he’d have trouble getting out the house in one piece. There’s no way… oh wait. Is that a clip of the real-life guy? Well. I guess they nailed it then. The more you know, the more you realize how many stars had to alignn for this to happen the way it did. You’re ready to laugh, and you will but then the movie’ll turn around to face you and damn if it doesn’t deliver a bombshell that’ll stop you dead in your tracks.
They don’t make movies like this. Whenever we see the words "based on a true story", you know you're in for an inspirational movie; it’s that one time the team caught lightning in a bottle or the one time the odds were beaten. I, Tonya is not that story. Tonya Harding was born into trash and the world never forgot to remind her of that. Every time she managed to claw her way up the cliffside of poverty, something or someone was there to knock her back down again. Frequently, it was her mother or her husband but more than once, it was the very sport she loved so much and maybe one time… it was even us. The movie gets downright savage but it’s also so outrageous, so funny you happily jump on for the ride. In every scene that breaks the fourth wall, director Craig Gillespie seems to suggest that no matter how bad things get - and they will get bad - it only makes sense to laugh a little. It’s not as if one person no matter how talented or determined can really change our destinies, after all.
Repeat viewings keep revealing fresh and tasty decisions made by the filmmakers. You get to fully appreciate the performances, for instance. Margot Robbie plays Tonya Harding from a teenager to a grown woman and you buy her all the way because she’s so utterly committed to the role. Allison Janey is so evil you expect her to turn up with a suit made of Dalmatians… but she’s too trashy even for that. Everyone we see is great.
I, Tonya hilarious and heartbreaking. The performances alone would make this movie great even if the story was boring, which it’s anything but. There’s just no other movie like this one out there. (June 7, 2019)

Christian Lacroix Fall 2005 Couture Fashion Show
Editor’s note: Vogue Runway is celebrating “the most wonderful time of the year” by adding six magical—and newly digitized—1990s haute couture shows to our archive. Christian Lacroix’s spring 1994 collection was originally presented on January 16, 1996, at the Hotel Intercontinental in Paris.“Spring ’94 was a mix and match of French Revolution and Directoire styles with 1940 fashions—my two favorite periods in costume history—in ’90s proportions.” —Christian Lacroix“Today, femininity is a weapon; it’s a force.” So said Christian Lacroix about his spring 1994 show to Vogue. Despite a few borrowed-from-the-boys nautical elements, and the casting of the androgynous and shaved-head model Eve Salvail, the collection was anything but hard-edged. In fact, it served as a brief respite from calamity. An earthquake in Los Angeles and an attack on the figure skater Nancy Kerrigan were among the events that took place in the buildup to the season, leading Lacroix to include the following lines, quoted by the Associated Press, in his program notes: “In these violent and desperate times, the only salvation lies in sincerity and a total loyalty towards one’s passions. Couture is my passion.”Lacroix channeled his passions in a number of directions here, as he explored, per Vogue, “three stylistically liberated times in history—1800, the mid-1940s, and 1980.” You really have to dig for references to the “greed decade,” in which Lacroix made his debut, but the ’40s clearly influenced the hair and makeup.“The bride was inspired by an 18th-century engraving of the Virgin Mary, and was embroidered with fabrics and real stones François Lesage, my godfather, gifted me, and which are still in my bedroom.” —LacroixLacroix’s ardor for historical references equaled, if not topped, his passion for couture, as is expressed in the penultimate bridal look featuring a floral-stripe and beaded corset worn with a metallic lace underskirt on top of which was another skirt of a pale plaid with lace appliqués over which skim embroidered songbirds. Call it a cut-and-paste assemblage, the couture way. Fantastical in another mode were the more contemporary yet still dreamy lingerie looks that move beyond the ubiquitous 1990s slip dress.

I, Tonya
I watched this movie and was left amazed by it. I, Tonya is based on the true story of Tonya Harding, the first woman figure skater to do a triple axel, and her connection to an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. The movie stars Margot Robbie as Tonya, Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gillooly, Tonya’s ex husband and Allison Janney as Lavona Fay Golden, Tonya’s mother. I would first like to talk about…

I was born on November 4, 1979. What happened on that day? The Iranian Hostage Crisis. Yes, I was born on the day of a historical event.
1980's-the AIDS pandemic.
What happened on November 9, 1989, five days after my 10th birthday? The fall of the Berlin Wall.
What happened on January 20th, 1993? Bill Clinton is Inaugurated.
February 26, 1993-The World Trade Center is attacked the first time.
January 6, 1994-Tonya Harding's ex-husband and his cronies attack Nancy Kerrigan at Joe Louise Arena.
January, 1998-Bill Clinton goes on National TV and denies he banged Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. She also gave him a blow job!
October 8, 1998-Ken Starr gathers evidence to impeach Bill Clinton.
December 19, 1998-Bill Clinton gets impeached over his affair with Monica Lewinsky and the blow job she gave him. Yep, he literally gets impeached over a blow job! But everyone forgets about the affair with Gennifer Flowers, and Linda Tripp, right?
November, 2000-Florida has a recount of ballots due to 10,000 votes being thrown out. Gore actually won, but the Supreme Court intervened and gave the Presidency to George W. Bush.
September 11, 2001-The World Trade Center and the Pentagon are attacked.
2002-2003-SARS appears. Eight Americans die. Bush closes the country to prevent it from coming in and spreading even further.
2007-The economy crashes.
November 4, 2008-Barrack Obama is the President. He's the first bi-racial president. Best birthday ever for me!
January 20, 2008-President Obama is Inaugurated.
2008-20120-there's a MAJOR recession as a result of the 2007 economic crash and banking crisis.
2009-H1N1 is on US soil. (I'm convinced I had this thanks to my cousin who brought it back to MI with him. He's a trucker.)
November 8, 2016-President Donald Trump is elected, and wins. I voted for Hillary Clinton, but I digress.
January 20, 2017-Trump is Inaugurated.
January 21, 2017-millions of pissed-off women hold the women's march. The pink cat hats were actually knitted or crocheted by knitters and crocheters themselves! Here's a pattern to the famous hat!
December 18, 2019-Trump is impeached for the FIRST TIME! This was over his phone calls with Ukranian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy to get him to dig up dirt on his political opponents, including Joe Biden.
March 18, 2020-COVID 19 enters US Soil while Trump was busy tweeting and throwing another hissy fit on Fox. (Him phoning in Fox News every morning was him throwing another hissy fit. It's going to happen again, but worse this time!)
March, 2020-With no pandemic plan, Trump tweets. Trump keeps tweeting. Borders are closed. The world is shut down. Trump sends aid to red states only, tells people in blue states to basically go fuck themselves. Calls MI governor Gretchen Whitemere "The crazy lady from Michigan" when she was asking for some aide, because states had NO resources or no epidemic plan to follow. Trump got rid of Obama's pandemic plan, which prevented the Ebola virus from spreading when it first entered US soil.
November 3, 2020-Joe Biden is elected President. Trump actually tries to rig the election.
January 6, 2021-Trump and his cult storm the capitol.
January 13, 2021-Trump is impeached. AGAIN. See January 6.
November 5, 2024-Trump wins the election! He's the first convicted felon as President. He cheated, he rigged this election, and there's evidence that proves this. Kamala lost, and still, all hope isn't lost.
There, I've been through 27 historical events in my 45 years on this planet.
I've never felt Squidward on so many levels right now.

but honestly any gram of crumbs you can give I am content !!
METALSONICSCRAPS !!! DROP OTI CRUMBS AND MY LIFE IS YOURSSS !!!!

u r amazing !!
OMG HI! Its so cool that you still enjoy that AU! I've been thinking about it quite a bit recently, so a rewrite may be coming 👀 (don't quote me on that, I'm a full time student and I work a lot)
So originally, I was inspired by the Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan case. If you don't know what that is, basically Tonya's husband at the time orchestrated an attack on Nancy (which broke her leg) bc Tonya and Nancy were rivals in the figure skating olympics. Tonya was banned from the olympics for conspiracy or something like that
It was also inspired a story my skate coach likes to tell all the time. She broke her leg skating because one of her competitors grandmothers (yes, some sneaky old lady) purposefully loosened the blades on her skates.
One major thing I want to change about the story going forward is Eggman's presence. I wanted him to still be kinda the same, but having the Sonic team be heroes and hockey players is kinda a lot. I do have plans for him, but world domination won't be his main goal, hint hint. As for sonic and the gang, they might just do good on a small scale since there's no world-endangering threat.
Also I'm not sure how I feel about Maria being alive. Originally, it was relevant for the plot, but I realized that I can write the same story with her dead (sorry Maria fans lol)
That's a bunch a technical stuff tho, so let me throw in a fun headcanon. After hockey games, the team all go out to a local sports pub to get food. All the employees there know their names (mostly bc when they first started doing it they were super noisy and disruptive). Sometimes, they lead events there, like karaoke night or trivia night. I wanted to bring this up in the original fic, and then have all the staff show up to the big playoff game at the end to cheer them on lol. This is inspired by a sports pub in my hometown that I used to go to after softball games. We did fundraisers there and also bingo nights.
That's a lot, sorry for yapping. But I'm so glad you still have interest in this AU! Thank you for the ask, friend!
#scraps posts#oti#on thin ice#scraps fics#its skating season again so that's also helping with my motivation

Look Back at the Biggest Olympics Scandals Ever
The Olympics may be an event that is all about athletics, but that doesn’t mean that the most shocking things happen during the tournaments. Throughout the years, incidents from doping scandals to terrorist attacks have made headlines for the Olympics beyond the Games. Perhaps one of the most famous scandals came out of the 1994 games in Lillehammer when ice skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked…

I, TONYA (2017)
I, TONYA (2017 film)
I, Tonya (2017) is based on the true crime story of the attack on ice skater Nancy Kerrigan by her rival Tonya Harding in 1994.
Harding’s white trash upbringing clashed with the elegant sport that she excelled; which caused numerous battles in her ice-skating career. The judges criticise her for her clothing, her music choices and her frizzy blond perm. It was her overbearing chain smoking mother who pushed Harding into ice-skating and she later falls in love and gets married to an abusive husband. Regardless of the hardship she endured growing up and throughout her marriage, Harding stood up and never backed down.
Ice skater Tonya Harding's ex-husband had Kerrigan attacked in an attempt to injure her so badly that she wouldn't be able to compete against Harding in the Olympics. The only person who could gain from this attack was Harding herself - however, she has denied her involvement since the incident occurred.
Kerrigan recovered and competed against Harding in the Olympics, Nancy came 2nd and Tonya came 8th. Afterward, Tonya was banned from competing for life for her involvement in the attack.
I, Tonya is a dark-comedy which stars Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding. Even though Robbie trained extensively for the role, she (and no acting double) could do the triple axel, which meant the scene had to be accomplished with visual effects.
There was a TV miniseries called Tonya & Nancy: The Inside Story released in 1994 which you can watch on YouTube.

Richard Jewell
July 1996 - Richard Jewell discovered a bomb at Atlanta's Olympic Park. At first he was hailed as a hero but soon became the FBI number 1 suspect
The story of what happened to Richard Jewell was a tragic case of “trial by media.” Though he was never charged with the bombing, many people presumed that Richard Jewell was guilty due to the intense press coverage.
After discovering the bomb he was able to evacuate dozens of people before the bomb exploded
A few days later the media started reporting that the FBI made him the prime suspect.
The hero quickly became a villain in the public eye.
Media outlets painted him as a wannabe cop who was so desperate to be the hero that he killed innocent people
For an agonizing 88 days everybody agreed that he was guilty even though he was never officially charged. In reality, the FBI soon stopped investigating Jewell when they realized that he wasn’t the man they were looking for.
2005, Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty to planting the bomb
At this point Richard Jewell's reputation had been tarnished beyond return
Later reports revealed that a 911 call from a nearby phone booth had tipped dispatchers off to the threat: “There is a bomb in Centennial Park. You have 30 minutes.” It had likely been the bomber.
The Centennial Olympic Park explosion killed one woman and injured 111 others (and a camera man that died of a heartattack)
Once the press caught wind of Richard Jewell’s discovery of the bag and the action he took to evacuate the crowd, he was quickly hailed as a hero.
But his fame soon turned to infamy after the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a front-page story with a headline that suggested Richard Jewell might have been guilty of planning the attack in the first place: “FBI Suspects ‘Hero’ Guard May Have Planted Bomb.”
Kathy Scruggs, a police reporter at the publication, had apparently received a tip from a friend in the federal bureau that the agency was looking at Richard Jewell as a suspect in the bombing investigation. The tip was confirmed by another source, who worked with the Atlanta police.
Most damaging was one specific sentence in the piece: “Richard Jewell… fits the profile of the lone bomber,” which was published despite no public declarations by the FBI or criminal behavior experts. Other news outlets picked up the bombshell story and used similar language to profile Jewell, painting him as a lone-man bomber and wannabe cop.
For 88 days following the report of the FBI’s investigation into Richard Jewell, he and his mother were engulfed in a media storm
In October 1996, after exhaustive probes suggested Richard Jewell could not have planted the bomb based on his whereabouts that night, the U.S. Justice Department formally cleared him as a suspect in the Centennial Park bombing investigation. But the damage to his reputation was irrevocable.
“You don’t get back what you were originally,” Jewell said. “I don’t think I will ever get that back. The first three days, I was supposedly their hero — the person who saves lives. They don’t refer to me that way anymore. Now I am the Olympic Park bombing suspect. That’s the guy they thought did it.”
'Trial of the media'
He later won a settlement against several media outlets that reported on the case/
This is now a case study of irresponsible reporting in the press.
The New York Post called him “a Village Rambo” and “a fat, failed former sheriff’s deputy.”
Jay Leno said that Jewell “had a scary resemblance to the guy who whacked Nancy Kerrigan,” and questioned, “What is it about the Olympic Games that brings out big fat stupid guys?”
After the investigation, Richard Jewell sued several news outlets for libel and won settlements from Piedmont College, the New York Post, CNN, and NBC (the latter for a reported $500,000). However, he lost a decade-long battle with Cox Enterprises, the parent company of the Atlanta paper.
The libel case against the Journal-Constitution continued years after Richard Jewell’s death in 2007 and even went all the way up to the Georgia Supreme Court. But the Court ultimately ruled that because the paper’s reporting was true at the time of publication — that he was indeed an FBI suspect in the days after the bombing — it didn’t owe Jewell or his family anything.
Nevertheless, no amount of settlements could have ever given Richard Jewell back two important things he lost: his dignity and peace.
“I hope and pray that no one else is ever subjected to the pain and the ordeal that I have gone through,” he said through tears during a press conference after the Justice Department cleared him of the bombing.
Tragically, Richard Jewell’s death came just two years after Eric Rudolph pled guilty to the attack

Blamed for “kneecapping” the U.S. capital markets and slammed for dodging questions around Bitcoin and Pokemon cards, Gary Gensler appears to have had one hell of a grilling from Congress this week. On Sept. 27, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission chief again found himself in front of lawmakers in a scheduled hearing to discuss his agency’s oversight of the markets. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights of the hearing. “You are the Tonya Harding of securities regulations.” One of the more colorful analogies came from United States Representative Andy Barr, who accused Gensler of “kneecapping” the U.S. capital markets with regulatory red tape. Barr referred to an old testimony from Gensler, where Gensler argued that the U.S. is the largest, most sophisticated and innovative capital market in the world and that it shouldn’t be taken for granted as “even gold medalists must keep training.”“With all due respect Mr. Chairman, if the U.S. capital markets are a gold medalist, you are the Tonya Harding of securities regulations,” said Barr. “You are kneecapping the U.S. capital markets with the avalanche of red tape coming out of your Commission.”Barr is presumably referring to a scandal where U.S. ice skater Tonya Harding hired an assailant to attack her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, in the lead-up to the 1994 United States Figure Skating Championships and the Winter Olympics. Kerrigan ended up not competing in the U.S. championships. Davidson accused Gensler of pushing a “woke” political and social agenda and abusing his role as the SEC’s Chair. Gary Gensler’s tenure at the SEC highlights two key problems. 1) @GaryGensler problem 2) @SECGov structural problem That’s why I introduced the SEC Stabilization Act to #FireGaryGensler and restructure the SEC. pic.twitter.com/Ud3giejKfZ— Warren Davidson (@WarrenDavidson) September 27, 2023 The U.S. representative added that he hopes the SEC Stabilization Act he introduced with U.S. Representative Tom Emmer could make that happen. “You’re making the case for this bill [SEC Stabilization Act] every day you’re acting as the Chairman,” he concluded.Gensler wasn’t given the chance to respond.Gensler reiterates Bitcoin isn’t a securityAsked by U.S. House Committee on Financial Services chair Patrick McHenry whether Bitcoin is a security, Gensler eventually relented, stating that Bitcoin didn’t meet the Howey Test. “It does not meet the Howey test which is the law of the land,” Gensler said, implying that Bitcoin isn't a security.McHenry then suggested Bitcoin must be a commodity, which Gensler avoided answering, saying the test for that is outside the scope of U.S. securities laws.Gary Gensler says that #Bitcoin is NOT a security, but he refuses to say that it’s a commodity. He’s running out of time. When a powerhouse like BlackRock asks for a Bitcoin ETF you MUST deliver. pic.twitter.com/yhKcMzfzx6— The ₿itcoin Therapist (@TheBTCTherapist) September 27, 2023 Henry also suggested Gensler tried to “choke off the digital asset ecosystem” and refused to be transparent with Congress about the SEC’s connections with FTX and its former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.Gensler also wasn’t given the chance to respond to the claims made by McHenry. Are Pokemon trading cards securities? It depends. U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres used his time to quiz Gensler about his interpretation of what constitutes an investment contract. Torres put Gensler to the test by asking whether purchasing a physical Pokemon trading card constitutes a securities transaction.
I cross-examined @SECGov Chair Gary Gensler about the term 'investment contract', which is key to determining his authority over crypto. Gensler struggled to answer basic questions like whether an investment contract requires a contract. His evasions are deafening and damning. pic.twitter.com/EJcZEHiKGL— Rep. Ritchie Torres (@RepRitchie) September 27, 2023 “Suppose I was to purchase a Pokemon card. Would doing so constitute a security transaction?”Gensler responded — “I don’t know what the context is” — before eventually concluding it isn’t a security if it is purchased in a store. Torres then asked:“If I were to purchase a tokenized Pokemon card on a digital exchange via a blockchain, is that a security transaction?”“I’d have to know more,” replied Gensler. Gensler then explained that it’s when the investing public can anticipate profits based upon the efforts of others — that’s the core of the Howey Test. Representative Torres called Gensler's "evasions" as "deafening and damning."A sign of defianceMeanwhile, among the back-and-forth cross-examinations between Gensler and U.S. Representatives, eagle-eyed observers noticed a Coinbase “Stand With Crypto” logo behind the SEC Chair.BREAKING: Coinbase Stand with Crypto logo displayed at Gary Gensler hearing pic.twitter.com/IAwqyDEQea— Miss Teen Crypto (@missteencrypto) September 27, 2023 The Coinbase-led initiative is a 14-month-long campaign that launched in August.
