Nanami x Latina/e Reader ~ New Year’s Eve
an: this is inspired by my family’s traditions (and the fun of watching my husband go along with them all.) happy new year!
Kento didn’t particularly care for New Year’s. He appreciated the day off work, if he was lucky- a rare early night and plans to begin another long year with a quiet morning of reading.
But with you by his side this year, he found himself pulled into a bright flurry of traditions. To both of your surprise, he didn’t mind. Instead, he let himself be swept up in your enthusiasm, his tired eyes crinkled into a smile as you bustled around the house together, cleaning.
“Wait, don’t get rid of that yet!” Nanami froze with a dripping mop in hand, about to empty the dirty water. You reached over and took the bucket, laughing at his confused look. “Yet being the operative word. This goes out the door at midnight!”
“Our…mop water?”
“Yep!” You set it aside and wiped off your hands. “All the bad shit from the past year will get flung out the door with this. At least, that’s the idea.”
He shook his head with a smile. “Whatever you say, love. Though there’s nothing I can think of that I want to throw away- this year brought me you.”
“Sweet-talker.” You leaned up to kiss him on the cheek. “Not even overtime? Annoying coworkers?” You pecked his face with each suggestion, a warm blush creeping over his features. “Stale bread?”
“Well. Maybe there are some things.” He set the mop aside. “What’s next?”
“Grapes. Don’t worry, I bought them in advance.” You talked over your shoulder to him as you headed to the kitchen. “And we should get the suitcases out-” you raised your voice to be heard over running water as you began to wash the fruit. “Do you have any new underwear?”
Poor Nanami has been following until that last one. He poked his head into the kitchen, utterly bewildered. “Do I have what?”
“New underwear is good luck! You don’t have to wear it till tomorrow.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “I suppose I’ll have to check.” You plucked twenty-four grapes from the bunch and divided them into two cups.
“One for each month, for each of us.” You smacked his hand away playfully as Nanami reached for a cup. “At midnight!”
He took a grape from the leftover bunch and popped it into his mouth. “Okay, hands off. Is this more good luck?”
“Absolutely. We have to eat them in the first minute of the new year.”
“Along with throwing out the mop water?” You grinned mischievously at him.
“And walking around the house with our suitcases.”
“Outside? It’s freezing!”
“It’s tradition, Kento! We have to take a lap around the house with them if we want to travel next year.” Nanami pulled you into a hug, smiling into your hair.
“Well then we certainly have to do it. How does Malaysia sound?”
You told him exactly how it sounded, and then some- and the evening slipped away in a happy blur.
When midnight drew near, the two of you were drowsily cuddled on the couch in the soft glow of candlelight, empty wineglasses and half-read books on the table at your feet. You were nearly asleep when the beep of Nanami’s watch startled you.
“Mm, what is it?”
He stirred and wrapped his arms around you. “It’s almost midnight, my love. Time for our traditions, right?”
You grinned sleepily at the word “our”, but didn’t quite open your eyes. Nanami stroked your cheek with his thumb.
“Come on, get up. We can’t let those grapes go to waste.” His voice was soft and warm, wrapping around you like a blanket as you sat up.
“I forgot we’re old now,” you laughed. “I’m so tired!”
Nanami collected your wine glasses and took them to the kitchen. “Being old isn’t all bad.” He retrieved a bottle of champagne from the fridge and held it out to you. “This is one of the perks.”
He poured two glasses as you readied the grapes and set the bucket of water and suitcases by the door. He slid his arms around your waist, his chin on your shoulder as you watched the last few seconds of the year tick down together.
At the stroke of midnight, Nanami spun you in his embrace and pressed his lips to yours- a loving kiss that took your breath away. He broke it first, leaving you to sigh shakily and drink down the champagne.
He held up the cup of grapes and clinked it against yours. “For another year with the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me.” You blushed through the first two, then giggled through the next ten at the sight of Nanami meticulously eating each one.
Another watch beep, and a grape-juiced kiss from Kento. “Next!” He took your hand, a little unsteady from the champagne, and ran with you to the front door.
“Out with overtime!” He called. You each picked up a side of the bucket and heaved the water outside.
“Good riddance!” You called after, collapsing into laughter at his side. He steadied you and pushed a suitcase handle into your hand.
“Malaysia next, my love?” You nodded happily and traipsed across the lawn, luggage in tow. He followed, not caring what the neighbors would think if any of them peeked out of their windows to see the strange parade.
You barely noticed the cold, warmed inside and out with drink, giddy joy, and the clasp of Kento’s hand. The empty bags bumped along behind you, full of hopes for the future. Together, you managed to stumble back inside and into bed.
“Happy New Year,” you whispered against his lips.
“The very happiest. To many more,” he murmured back.

I loved your latina reader fanfic's so much (especially since I rarely see any and I thank you soooo much)!! So I was wondering if you can write another Nanami fanfic with a latina reader in which she shows him to her family (when they are both attending Jujutsu high as teenagers?). Her mother is a bit skeptical, like all latina mothers are but loves Nanami!
Meeting Over Dinner // Teen!Nanami Kento x Latina! Fem!reader
word count: 3.3k
cw: teen!nanami, fem!reader, teen!reader, established relationship, fluff, untranslated Spanish (like four lines or less), not proofread, use of reader as a name.
summary: Nanami and you have been dating for a while, which means that eventually, you have to bring him to your parents. Yet, everyone knows how parents can be quite picky about their children's partner when meeting them for the first time.
a/n: this took me a while to write, but i am so excited since this is my first ask! thank you @erigaur for dropping a message and for enjoying these latine!reader fics, i enjoy writing them as well! this is also my first time writing for teen!Nanami, so a couple of first happening today with this one. Hope you all enjoy this one!
liked this? show it with a like, reblog, and/or comment. each is greatly appreciated and celebrated!
There comes a time that every person in a relationship fears—meeting your partner’s parents and having your partner meet your parents. Unfortunately, you and Nanami had reached that point and you couldn’t avoid it any longer from your side.
It took a while before the two of you even became a couple due to how different your cultures were. Whereas his culture was pretty restrained and his reserved nature did not make his feelings easy to see, your culture was indulgent and it made you seem like a social butterfly, trying to strike up a conversation whenever you could rather than someone who had a huge crush on him. Neither of you noticed that glint in each other’s eyes that appeared every time you talked. Lucky for the two of you, Haibara did and decided to play matchmaker.
He saw the way Nanami would try to talk to you when all students hung out despite always keeping to himself in such outings and the way you would always offer your food to him first without fail. Most importantly, he saw the way you two always denied your feelings for the other with that same glint. It took a few sneaky moves and the help of his seniors, which was basically stopping Gojo from teasing the two of you when alone, but eventually, you and Nanami started dating.
But dating was a special topic in your family. One that you were constantly reminded of every time you had a family reunion.
After countless times of hearing your aunts asking you “¿y el novio?”, you were finally able to say you started seeing someone. Least to say, your family became curious the minute you revealed this information and not only started to ask you about him but also teased you. You would talk about your day and they would see how you smiled when you mentioned Nanami. They would tease you with squeals and knowing glances at how smitten you looked. You would tell them you were going out and suddenly you had a billion questions regarding your plans with your boyfriend. After a couple of months, they knew you were getting pretty serious about this boy, turning the teasing into nagging about when they would meet him.
Not wanting to prolong the inevitable, you invited Nanami to have dinner at your house, which brings us to this moment with you and Nanami walking to your house. You were quite surprised at how collected he seemed to be about this, which assured you that things would go smoothly since he has always been able to hold his own. However, on the inside, Nanami was freaking out. He wanted to make a good impression on your parents, especially your father. He really really liked you and knew he had to show your father that he was worthy of dating you.
“Listen, if at any point you feel uncomfortable, just tell me. I’ll keep you up with whatever they say in Spanish but don’t think too much if they speak it. They are just more comfortable speaking it.” You told him, a small crease on your forehead as you prepared him for his whole dinner.
Nanami sighs, looking at the door before him. Though he was nervous, it was more obvious how you kept repeating the same warnings that did nothing but grow those nerves of yours the more you went around in circles with your thoughts. He places a hand on your shoulder, giving you a small squeeze.
“I’ll do my best to show the best me, okay? You don’t need to worry about me embarrassing you.”
He was really sweet in trying to assure you. But to you, Nanami was not the one you were worried about. But you didn’t want to give him any more reasons to worry him now that the two of you were at the steps of your front door. Instead, you flash him a small smile, finding some comfort in his words from how he is trying to calm you down. It was sweet. “I know you won’t. Just don’t let their words get to you.”
You open the front door, making your way into your home and holding the door open for Nanami. Taking a deep breath and putting a smile on your face, you announce to your family that you’re home.
The two of you leave your stuff by the front door, making your way to the kitchen where both your mom and dad are busy preparing dinner. When they hear your voice, both of them turn to look at you with a smile on their faces, putting the utensils away and cleaning their hands before making their way to greet you with a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Nanami watches your parents greeting you home with such warmth that it suddenly makes sense why you are so sweet and lively even during the worst days. Because you came home to such a caring atmosphere. It made him feel nervous, on the other hand, because he was not used to such greetings that seemed too touchy for his liking. He knows that it is one of the cultural differences you have faced in your relationship, but he hopes that your parents can understand that as well as you have.
Your father is the first to greet Nanami, instantly making him feel insecure under his gaze. But the feel of the moment changes quickly when your father smiles gently at Nanami and extends his arm.
“Ah, you must be Nanami, right? We’ve heard a lot about you, it’s really nice that we finally get to meet you.” Your dad beams, his friendliness making Nanami’s earlier expectations of your father completely wrong.
He thought your father would be looking at him with a harsh glare, one that would make him tense on the spot and feel inferior to him. But here he was, relaxing his shoulders as he reached out to your dad’s hand and bowing before him as he greeted him. Maybe your dad wouldn’t be as frightening as he once thought. Not when Nanami could hear the playful chuckle from your dad when he bowed, but he shook it off since he wanted to be respectful.
“I apologize for taking so long to meet you, sir. I should’ve introduced myself the moment I was interested in your daughter.” Nanami says as he straightens up, trying his best to ensure a good impression on your dad.
But once again, your dad laughs, throwing his head back, and lets go of Nanami’s hand. “Sir? No, no. No need to go so far, I do not deserve that much respect, young man.” Your dad said, shaking his hands in front of Nanami to assure him further.
No, your dad was not who Nanami should be worried about like he initially believed. It was the woman before the two of you looking up and down his figure with a polite smile but eyes that were sizing him up the moment he came in. Your mom.
The moment you saw how your mom was looking at Nanami, you could feel your heartbeat accelerate as you tried to make out her reaction to Nanami. You knew the way her eyebrow raised every time you talked about him, impatiently waiting for you to invite him. Your mom was not thrilled to learn you were dating someone who was not Latino, mainly because she wanted to be able to speak to your partner in the language she was most comfortable speaking. Your mom didn’t know much about Nanami other than he was a sorcerer in the same class as you. She was already skeptical of him and how good he would fit into the family.
It is not ideal at all from how her eyes go to his hair first and you mentally curse. Before she could say anything, you decide to beat her to it and speak first.
“Ama, this is Nanami. Nanami, this is my mom.” You say in a cheery tone, hoping that the way your eyes kept darting between each other didn’t give away how nervous you were as you try to make out their reactions to the other.
Nanami extends out his hand to your mom, wanting to greet her with respect. But your mom was surprised when she was already standing there with her arms open, expecting a hug. She looks down at Nanami’s hand, putting down her arms and shaking his hand with a less-than-pleased expression despite her smile.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, miss. Your daughter talks a lot about you, thank you for inviting me to your home.” He says, his tone sounding too serious for your mom’s liking.
The bow he does after it does not really help his case either, it makes your mom flash you a look that you interpret as a he does this every time? To which you responded with a tilt of your head and a be respectful, different cultures, remember? look.
She lets go of his hand, still sizing Nanami up and not looking too pleased about it. In her eyes, he was too formal. You knew it was going to happen considering how warm your mom usually is, but you thought she was going to think of it as a sign of respect. After flashing him a smile and clasping her hands together, she tells Nanami.
“Oh don’t mention it, we were excited to meet the boy that had this one so happy.” Her tone, though still warm, wasn’t the one you were used to. It sounded as if she was distracted trying to learn everything about Nanami from his appearance and greeting alone.
Your mom turns to look at you with that raised brow you know too well and asks you, “¿y este es emo o por qué el pelo le tapa la cara?"
“Do you need help setting up the table? I’m sure food’s almost ready since we took a while to get here” You say quickly as you clap your hands together, ignoring your mom’s comment by changing the topic into something that wouldn't involve her being judgemental towards your boyfriend.
Your mom’s eyebrows jump slightly at the conversation change and it does not go unnoticed by you at the way her demeanor is borderline critical of Nanami, practically disapproving of him without really knowing him. You know she was just getting used to seeing you date someone, but you wanted her to be a bit more considerate and kind to him.
Nanami, while oblivious to what your mother said in Spanish, catches the way you so suddenly offered to help with the table. He nods and looks back at your mom, offering his help as well. “Is there any way we can help? After all, it’s only right since you went through the trouble of cooking, miss.”
Your mom looks back at Nanami, looking satisfied-ish at his words despite his formality. She nods, telling them that dinner will be ready as soon as the table is.
As you and Nanami start setting up the table with the glasses and the utensils, you look at him with worried eyes. Your mom is cautious about him, yeah, she was also pretty stuck on the fact you were not dating anyone from your culture. You know she had no ill will. It's just that every person who would meet your parents for the first time would enter an interrogation with your mom. Since Nanami was not just any person and someone you were dating, you were worried she would be harsher on him, especially as someone outside your culture.
“Hey, so,” You started, putting down the forks and knives on each seat of the table, “my mom can be a lot in these meetings. Ask a lot, say a lot, go over the line and all. What I am saying is that you don’t have to answer her questions if they make you uncomfortable.”
Nanami looked at you from the other side of the table. Tonight was different from what he expected. He didn’t know it would be your mom who he had to look out for, nor that you were this worried for him. While it did make him feel more anxious, he walked towards you after setting down the last glass, shaking his head at your words.
“Your mom only wants the best for you.” He says nonchalantly, trying to hide said nerves even though that sigh that escapes his lips snitch on him. “I’m more than okay answering her questions if it means ensuring your parents know that I care about you.”
“I don’t want you to feel pressured to answer though.” You look at him, placing your hands on the chair and gripping it to calm yourself. you couldn't understand how he could look so collected despite the nerves he felt.
“They are not pressuring me. I’m telling you I want to answer those questions. I was the one who said yes to coming, remember?” Nanami says softly, taking one of your hands and entwining his fingers with yours, giving your hand a small squeeze as he hums. “I’m not only dating their daughter, but I am also someone from outside their culture. If I have to answer a million questions, then I will answer them because I don’t want to miss my chance with this amazing girl just because I didn’t say what my intentions with her are.”
Whatever you were feeling before was gone and replaced with tenderness in your heart. You smile at Nanami, squeezing his hand back as you turn to face him completely. “You think I am amazing?”
“Without a doubt, I definitely would answer a million questions for you, no matter how weird I find them.”
As you giggle at Nanami’s words, your mom is standing at the kitchen’s entryway as she hears the two of you talk. You had that glint in your eyes, both when warning him and when hearing his compliment. You always had that glint when you really liked something, like an ice cream flavor or a toy when you were younger. But it was different somehow, more affectionate and much more hopeful. It was as if all tension left your body and that glint just affirmed such. You looked just as smitten when looking at him than when you talked about him.
Not only that, but she also took the time to look at Nanami. When he came in, she thought he felt indifferent about being here. But when she heard that shaky sigh of his when he comforted you, your mom wasn’t seeing that overly formal kid that bowed before her when he came into her house. She was seeing someone who was putting you before him, that glint in his eye as he talked to you. Your mom was planning on measuring him up, to determine whether this boy was worthy of you and cared about you. But now she wasn’t sure if her questions were that necessary. She would still ask them, but now it was because she was curious rather than cautious of him.
How could she be so critical of him when he was holding your hand so carefully? Or how he seemed as if holding your hand erased all the nerves he felt at the moment? He was just a kid and he seemed to care and feel for you a lot. She couldn’t be disapproving of him now that she saw this.
Your mom returns to the kitchen and announces that the food is ready, serving the plates and bringing them to the table. Nanami quickly offered his help to help your mom bring the tables from the kitchen to the dining table, which your mom accepted with a smile. A genuine one, not a wary one. You noticed the change in her smile, walking to her as she sat down the first two plates. But before you could ask her about it, both your dad and Nanami came back to the table and everyone sat down.
Nanami looks down at the plate before him, recognizing the smell as similar to the food that you have offered him before from your lunch. Deciding that he couldn’t let his whole first impression be based on questions alone, he decided to take a chance and looked up at your mom. With a small smile in an attempt to be as warm as she was with you, he said.
“I’m very excited to try your food, miss.” He lightly tilted his head in your mom’s direction, taking a deep breath to keep his heart from beating any faster from his worry to look good. “Reader always brings very good food as their lunch and is kind enough to share it with me sometimes. I can only imagine it tastes better when just made.”
Your mom looks at Nanami, her fork in the air as she processes what she just heard from the young man. You look at your mom and then at Nanami, whose smile starts to falter as if he feared he said something wrong or as if his comment was too much of a step for your mom. But he quickly relaxes when your mom gently laughs in delight.
“I didn’t know you had tried my food before.” She explains, placing a hand on her chest.
“Well, Reader has tried to show me more of their culture so I could learn about it before we started dating. Yet, food has always been something I enjoyed and they have shared with me the basic dishes. I have tried to follow a few recipes but I am afraid they are never as good as the lunches you prepare for them.”
It was as if a switch flipped in your mom’s brain regarding Nanami, smiling so brightly at the compliment. She put down the fork, making you and your father exchange glances at how quickly she dropped her guard at Nanami. Though the compliment certainly goes a long way, the little moment between you and Nanami from earlier was now warming her heart much more now that she knows he has tried to learn about your culture. Maybe as long as there was that dedication for her daughter, then Nanami could fit in just fine.
“I didn’t know you cooked, let alone that you have tried to cook something from our culture.” Your mom beams, her gaze softening despite her excitement as the tension leaves Nanami’s body with this new attitude. After all, he didn’t feel like he was being interrogated in the way you feared.
Dinner goes smoothly. Your mom asks the essential questions to know more about Nanami and how your relationship with him has been going so far, your dad shares embarrassing stories of you that you would’ve rather keep until after a year of dating Nanami for him to hear, and your mom offering her help to Nanami so he could get those last touches when cooking. But one constant was how hard you were smiling, you didn’t expect things to go this well. Yet, you weren’t one to complain.
Once Nanami is at the front door picking up his stuff and getting ready to head out, your mom walks up to you two and turns to Nanami.
“Thank you again for coming, Nanami. Please do come more, next time I’ll make sure to write a few of my own recipes. Maybe even come earlier so I can teach you how to make them.”
“Of course, miss. Everything was delicious and I am glad I have finally met you. I’ll make sure to keep your offer in mind for next time.” Nanami says, feeling quite sheepish at your mom’s excitement.
“Well, it’s getting late and you should probably get going. Be safe.” Your mom says, reaching out for his hand and shaking it once more.
Nanami nods and you offer to walk with him to the train station. Though before you can go, your mom gets close to you and asks you to invite him more often since she could definitely use more hands in the kitchen.
You sigh at your mom but nod nonetheless before you close the door and start walking to the station with Nanami, hand-in-hand. As you talk about tonight’s dinner, you two agree that Nanami meeting your parents was much easier than you both expected at first. After all, your mom was already nagging you to invite him next Thursday.

I'M BLUSHIN IN THIS DAIRY QUEEN 💕💕💕😩😩😩
Pairing: Latina! Fem Reader x Nanami Kento (they're in their 20's)
WC: 3.3K
CW: Fluff. It's a meet-cute after all.
Summary: You travel to Japan after finishing school. You're homesick and journey to find tacos, as they're your reminder of home. You get lost, and the dashing Nanami Kento is there to help you. Soon, your worlds collide and it becomes a memorable meet-cute.
Note: I made an honest effort with the accents and the Spanish language. If you see an error, no you didn't. <3
Dividers from @/saradika-graphics
You recently graduated from university. From the minute you walked that stage, you wanted to live on your terms; you chose to study the degree of choice, despite the protests from your family. “Que vas hacer con tu vida?” or “Hace lo que te de la gana” were the common phrases you heard within days of having your diploma in hand. It would sting your heart, but at the same time, you’re in your 20’s. The best days of your life are ahead of you.
While you were in school, you took a number of odd jobs to have money for food, coffee, or textbooks. Whatever money you had leftover, you would put it in the “Japan Savings” jar. Unfortunately for you, you took a little longer to finish your degree than most of your peers, but the silver lining is that you had two extra years to save for your trip. Your mom told you that you’re out of your mind when you told her that you’re going to Japan. “Y con permiso de quien?” You gave her a look that you swore screamed “redrum”, but she knew that she couldn’t hold you back from doing what you wanted. “Bueno, ve a ver a tu Naruto o lo que quieras. Yo no te voy a impedir.”
Just like that, you were on a plane to Japan. You couldn’t sleep during the long flight. Your best friend who had gone the year prior told you where to start your trip. They warned you in advance that Tokyo might be overwhelming for your anxious heart, so they told you to land in Tokyo, but make your way towards Osaka or Kyoto. You had no idea what to expect from this trip. There was an excitement for new experiences, an understanding of a different culture outside of yours, and most of all, just have that adventure you worked so hard for.
You spent time in Osaka for a few days, absorbing the sights like a sponge. You read that Osaka was more down to Earth and it was also known for its food. You tried okonomiyaki and takoyaki at Shinsekei. The sights felt nostalgic to you from reading the history of the place, but above all, you’re pleased with the texture and flavours. You embrace how food connects you to the culture and it made you want to attempt to talk to people. You carried cards in your bag that had phrases that would be helpful like “where is the nearest washroom?”, “which direction towards the train station?”, and “i’m allergic to shellfish.” You spoke to locals with the very little Japanese you knew, but there was still a certain disconnect that you felt. You wonder if what you’re feeling is loneliness, as you have no one to share this adventure with. However, you march on as you still have a whole journey ahead of you.
After 4 days in Osaka, you move towards Kyoto to visit the temples. You’re not typically a praying person, but you felt it appropriate to pray towards something. There was a calm in the air whenever you took a step. Yet, that lingering emotion you felt in Osaka followed you here. You didn’t know if you should pray to meet someone or really pray to find a job immediately when you get back home. It wouldn’t hurt to meet someone, but at the same time you didn’t travel thousands of miles to find love. You just didn’t anticipate to feel lonely throughout this trip.
At the rate you progressed, a week had gone by. You ate various noodle dishes, sushi, and the onigiri from the convenience store; you felt homesick. You long to taste something familiar to home, but you have no idea if you’ll find it here. Your travels through two cities felt easy compared to your time in Tokyo. However, the idea that you must have something familiar to home grew like a weed in a garden.
Using your phone, you made the choice to search for tacos. You felt silly, but you knew this is what would comfort you and make you feel better. Searching and scouring the internet for 2 hours, you decided on place. After resting comfortably in your lodge, you went out that evening looking for home. The only problem, you’re not good with directions sometimes.
You made your way to Shinjuku, but you were walking in circles. What you didn’t notice as you walked around was that you had caught the attention of a blonde. You weren’t aware of him because your stomach grumbled as you kept running in circles to find this location. After maybe the third time walking to the samep place, the blonde couldn’t ignore you any longer. You clumsily bumped into someone as you weren’t looking up. When you felt the thud against your chest, you apologize and bow your head, when you look up.
He knows right away that you’re a foreigner, so he asks you, “are you alright?”
“Y..yeah…i’m sorry about that. I should’ve been paying attention.” you shyly say. You start your circular journey again when he interjects, “Do you need help getting somewhere?”
Your face beams up as you look at him, “Yes, I do! Wait, I apologize for being so excited. You’re just…nevermind! I’m actually looking for…a taco spot.”
His brows furrow, looking at you as if you’re telling him a lie. “That’s not possible to find that here.”
You proceed to frown at him and show him your phone. “This is what i’m trying to find. Can you please help me find it, or I’ll be moving on.”
He notices a switch in your temperament and is quick to apologize. “I’m sorry about that, it wasn’t meant to sound accusatory. I just never really had…tacos.”
“Well, if you help me find the place, it’ll be my treat.” You look at him with earnest eyes. “I’m sorry about my tone, sometimes… I can have a short fuse.”
There is something refreshing in the way you act. It’s not everyday that he runs into someone who is immediately very bubbly, but also with a temper of a firecracker. There’s a small curve that develops on his lips. You notice it right away.
“Is…that okay? If not, you can just point me in the right direction and…”
“It’s fine, i’ll just take you there. Besides, I guess I could eat”, he cuts you off.
You giggle and wait for him to assess in which direction you’re going to walk in. He hears you, and it tugs at his heartstrings. “Is she usually this bubby?”, he thought.
He motions to walk in a specific direction, and you follow. You observe that he’s very tall in contrast with your height. You try to keep up with his pace, but you fall behind. “Excuse me, but could you slow down, please?” He quickly notices that you’re trailing behind him. “Oh, my apologies.”
“I know you’re probably eager to get away from me, but could you at least wait till we get our food?”
“That’s preposterous. I wouldn’t be walking you to your location if I didn’t want to”, he retorts.
“Oh, sorry”, you suddenly tense up and remain quiet.
“No, I just felt I had to defend myself…”, he stumbles on his words.
“Could…we start over? We never even introduced ourselves and it’s just two strangers struggling here.” You stop walking and look at him. You tell him your name and extend your hand.
He bows out of politeness and extends his hand to you. “Nanami Kento, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
His handshake is firm and you try to match yours. Due to the lack of human contact on your trip, there is a blush that develops. He is quick to notice it, but tries to not give attention to it to further avoid any mishaps between the two of you.
“So why do you want eat tacos?” he asks.
“Long, story short, I’m really homesick. I felt if I ate the food i’m familiar with, it would make me feel less of that. I know i’m going home soon…but.”
“Oh? How long have you been here?”
“Well last week I was in Osaka, then moved towards Kyoto. I’m finishing the trip in Tokyo to make it easier on myself to go home.”
He takes a moment to process what you just told him. People come and go all the time to Japan, but it’s not often that he gets to interact with a tourist. At this moment, he is enjoying your company. He just had a long day at work. He can tell by the way you open up to him that you’re not afraid to tell him about yourself. He’s hopeful that he can continue to keep talking to you.
“I see. What do you plan on doing during the last leg of your trip?” he questions.
“Well, I know there’s Tokyo Tower, which reminds me of this anime I grew up watching, and…maybe walk around Shibuya. I didn’t really plan this last part out well, if I’m honest.”
“Oh, which anime?”
“Promise not to laugh at me?” you ask with a giggle.
He chuckles. “I promise.”
You mumble, “Sailor Moon.”
“I’m sorry, what was that?” he asks.
“Sailor Moon. There, I said it.” Your face feels hot suddenly, as he looks at you. You can feel his gaze on you as you try to look away.
“Ah, I see. I didn’t watch that growing up.” he says flatly.
“It’s not for everyone” you shrug.
There is a silence that now looms between the two of you. Suddenly, you smell something familiar. You smell grilled meats and onions. There is no doubt in your mind that you’re close.
“We are close!” you state.
“How could you know?” he asks you.
“I recognize this smell. It reminds me of a place near my block at home. It really does feel like home a little,” you express with joy. You’re smiling now and he can’t really ignore it. He wonders what he could say or ask that will make you smile like that again.
You reach the location. When you enter, your eyes light up. You notice that the menu is in a language that you recognize: Spanish. Interestingly, the menu has it in both Spanish and Japanese. You feel your heart light up as you feel a small pocket of home here in Japan. Nanami does take notice of how your face changed. You quickly go up to the counter and he soon follows.
“You can get whatever you want, like I said, it’s my treat.” You beam up at him.
He just looks at you, unsure of what to get. You boldly take his hand and guide him what to get. Your heart starts to race, but you try remain confident. “Well, you could get the asada, it’s a good safe choice, but suadero is really good! OOH! You could get carnitas.” He sees stars in your eyes, but it doesn’t answer his question on what he should get. You attempt to let go of his hand, but his grip tightens as you attempt to let go.
“Oh…I wasn’t sure you’d like that.”
“It…doesn’t bother me.” he expresses.
The person at the counter starts to speak in Japanese, assuming that Nanami was going to place the order, but then you interject in Spanish.
“Buenas noches, podría ordenar…”
Suddenly, the man at the grill looks over and starts talking “Hablas Español?”
“ !Si! Bueno, no a lo máximo, pero lo que yo pueda!”
“¿De dónde eres?”
You tell him shortly where you’re from, and he' s all smiles at this point. “¡Qué bueno! ¿Qué te gusta hoy?”
“Me comería todo aquí. Voy a ordenar cinco tacos. 1 de asada, 1 de suadero, y 3 de carnitas.” You turn around and Nanami just looks lost. He continues to notice how you beam and smile. The man switches to Japanese, and you see a look of relief on Nanami’s face. They seem to be having a conversation, and you have no idea what they’re really saying. The mood changes when Nanami begins to laugh. It’s a deep laugh, and then you notice they’re looking at you. You turn to look at Nanami with a slight frown, and he just smiles at you. “I’m not laughing at you, but we are talking about how I ended up here and met you.”
“Oh.” There’s that warmth on your face again. It’s kind of difficult to hide now in the well-lit room. Nanami completes his order, and just as you’re taking out your wallet, his arm extends out in front of you.
“Hey! I said I was going to get it!”
“Nonsense, it’s not very polite for a lady to pay.”
You shrug and start to walk towards the grill. There’s a comfort in watching someone prepare your food, as it’s familiar to something you know.
“¿Dónde aprendiste a hablar Español?
“En un pueblo en México. De ahí es donde aprendí cómo preparar tacos y decidí abrir mi propia taqueria.”
“¡Qué bueno! Me da felicidad verte. Nunca creí que iba a encontrar un lugar así.”
He goes on to explain that there are a lot of tourists that come from various places, but a lot of them have that same sentiment that you do when they want to have something familiar or that reminds them of home. You feel comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. He hands your food over and you start to walk towards a table. Nanami follows after you. You decide to sit outside on a bench.
At this point, Nanami watches how you prepare your tacos. You like to pinch the lime all over them and proceed to add your salsa generously.
“You can just sprinkle the lime and then you can just add the salsa to your heart’s content.”
You take a big bite before you realize that there’s a man sitting in front of you.
“Oh shit! I mean, crap. Sorry, I didn’t mean to let you see that side of me.” You quickly grab a napkin to wipe your face.
He chuckles again, “It’s okay, you really must be hungry.”
“Is it that obvious?”
“Well, yes. It makes sense. Without me, you’d be lost.”
“Hey! And without me, you wouldn’t have known about this place. Remember, you didn’t even think it could exist.”
“That 's true.”
You proceed to eat in silence, but this time, you try to be mindful of the fact that you cannot inhale your food. You feel self-conscious that a man is looking at you. Your bites get smaller to show him that you can be a lady.
He observe a change in your behaviour, so he decides to be bold and eat his taco in one bite. You suddenly start to laugh.
“Why did you do that?” you question him.
“I’ll be honest, I'm just as hungry too. Besides, eating with your hands is never meant to be neat.” He eats another in a single bite.
“I never expected you to be able to eat in one bite.”
“I just don’t do it often,” he states.
There is an air of silence as you eat. You fret that your night with him is coming to an end. You assume that you’ll likely part ways after your meal.
“What are you going to do after this?” he asks.
You look at the time. It’s 9 pm. “I’m not sure, probably head back to the hotel I'm staying at.”
“If you don’t mind, I'd like to walk you there.”
He also feels a sense of wanting to keep trying to talk to you. He is often very methodical in what he has to say, but you bring out something in him that makes it difficult to think about everything he has to say. Although, right now, he is enjoying being playful with you.
“Do you feel less homesick right now?” he quizzes.
“I do, actually. Although, most importantly, I feel less lonely. This is the most I've spoken to anyone on this trip.”
“Really?” he ponders.
“I could’ve easily called my parents, but my mom can be overbearing, so the most I do is send her a quick message where I’m at, and then she leaves me alone. I’d really rather have the space to think about my next steps.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I just finished school and then I used my earnings to come all the way over here.”
“Ah, I see. So this is a reward for you?”
“It is. I felt it was in my best interest now to come explore here, and then when I get back I could focus on finding a job.”
“Do you know what line of work you want to get into?”
“Not really. I’ve never seen myself as a corporate person, if I had to be honest.”
There’s a slight change in his expressions. “He’s wearing a suit, so he might be a businessman”, you think to yourself. “I’m sorry, I wasn't trying to insult your profession. I just feel very…lost right now.”
“No, no. I understand. I didn’t have much of a choice in my career track. I just went and studied business and economics, then just got a job at some corporation. To be honest, sometimes it feels grueling.”
“I’m sorry, that sounds challenging.” You’re sympathetic , but you cannot connect with him further as you feel you’re yet to have a real job like he does.
“This is actually the first time I’m able to talk about it. I was pushed to get on this track to study this degree and get this job. I was told that I'd be happy. Sometimes I feel miserable.”
“Well, if you could choose to do anything you want, what would it be?”
“If I really had an option, it would be to operate my own bakery.”
“I think that sounds wonderful. I know a thing or two about baking, but I'm not the greatest sometimes.”
“You bake too?”
“Yeah, from time to time, when I'm allowed in the kitchen.”
Your conversation continued to the point when the shop began to close. “We should leave”, you motion towards the street.
You clear the trash and start walking towards the street. “Hey, wait for me.” he scolds you.
He walks alongside you as you stroll back to your hotel. You’re walking slower than usual as you don’t want this night to end. He matches your pace, but he knows that he can change the trajectory of your trip without hesitation.
The sights start to look familiar and you fret about your meeting with this man.
“Well, Nanami, this was really nice. Thank you for dinner earlier.”
“It’s Kento, you can just call me that instead.”
You two look at each other and stare in silence.
“Well, good-bye then.” you start to walk inside. “Wait, actually, there’s something I wanted to ask you,” he boldly blurts out.
“Yeah?” you stare at him.
“About Tokyo Tower, if you’d like, I could take you and maybe, do a repeat of tonight.”
He sees stars in your eyes as you smile earth to earth. “I’d love that.” You turn around and walk towards him. You tippy toe yourself to find his cheek, but you stumble, and your lips stumble to find the corner of his lips. You are mortified.
“I’m so sorry! I wasn’t trying to do that, I was actually going for your cheek.” Your face is in pain.
He says nothing and leans down to press the softest kiss on your lips. He often isn’t this bold, but this is something new; he doesn’t know where it will end, but he knows that right now, you do make him feel excited.
“I’ll meet you here at 6 pm.” he says cooly. “Don’t be late.”
“I won’t.”
Suddenly, you don’t want this trip to end.

A Culture of Our Own // Nanami Kento x Latine! F! Reader
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/acdf759b107bad48baee6f97426e2b0c/c77beaf6734e8d24-0d/s540x810/cda8ee37f6987f3507d311b592c3619e8ae3a2d0.jpg)
Word Count: ~2k
Summary: Intercultural dating is still pretty difficult. But you make it work with Nanami. Today, you do it through music.
Notes: sfw, fluff, f!reader, established relationship, Latine! reader (though it's more Mexican-leaning), intercultural relationship and all that, self-indulgent, Spanish, no translations, not proofread.
A/N: Please note that this is more from my experience, it is also highly self-indulgent. And that is because Nanami is my man, sorry about that. Anyways, also HAPPY LATINO HERITAGE MONTH. this is for us y'all, i did my best for the community. I wanted it to uploaded it on the 15th, but life happened. But hey, I still uploaded this before the month ended, so it's a win.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/13fe234d6169484a638e69246ee989e4/c77beaf6734e8d24-47/s540x810/14c6e46102e006d0f6e15adca66295b3c343d19f.jpg)
Dating becomes interesting when you add culture into the mix. Did you think you would end up dating a Japanese man? Especially after a lifetime of your mother asking you to be with someone who spoke Spanish? No. But life had a way to play with you and a way to be nice to you.
Just look at him. Nanami Kento. Someone who was just as handsome on the outside as sweet as they were on the inside. So respectful, so breathtaking, and so dreamy. No one even came close to how much this man makes your heart jump at the sight of him. No, he might not know your native language. But he certainly made you happy and content at his side.
Of course, eventually, you start to explain your cultures outside of the common knowledge and general facts like holidays and etiquette. You start getting into pop culture and what is normally taken for granted in your culture. It's a slow process considering how spontaneous the conversation can be.
From "What does that mean?" when using slang to an inside joke your culture has, little reoccurrences become opportunities to learn more about each other. Sure, you might not be able to fully explain something or understand it, but it doesn't take away that you two start to weave your cultures into the relationship and mix them into one that becomes intrinsic to your dynamic.
Today, you had one of those occurrences when you were cleaning your place and he just happened to come early. When he knocks on the door, you let him in without missing a beat despite being in your full-on cleaning outfit and playlist. A playlist that consisted of old songs your mom used to play when she cleaned such as Bésame Mucho, La Mentira, Si Una Vez, and such. Real classics obviously.
Classics he's not familiar with.
"You're early." You noted with a smile, walking over to your phone and pausing your music.
He looks down at his watch, seeing that he is actually on time. He remembers how much you joke about your family being late to everything or how time is just really abstract for you after years of being told ahorita. A word that could mean anything between 5 minutes to two hours. He chuckles at your words, agreeing with you that he was early for you. The different perception in time between the two of you could be weird at times, but it never really brought many problems considering that both of you (you mostly) put in the effort to accommodate for it.
"Is there something wrong with wanting to see my partner a little early?" He asks, a small smile coming to his face as he walks closer to you, leaving a small kiss on your forehead.
You smile, happy to feel his lips on you once more. "No, but you're seeing me in the most typical way a Latina looks when cleaning. I don't need that image in your mind.
He looks up and down, trying to see this look you're talking about. Sure, you had baggier clothes and your hair was in a bun with a few hairs sticking out and decorating your face. He hums, brushing those hairs back behind your ears.
"I think you're exaggerating considering that we've dated for a while." He raises an eyebrow at you, smirking when he sees that you really think you look messy or bad for just wearing something more comfortable when cleaning. Nothing wrong with that and definitely not making you look ugly in his eyes.
"Still, what if you caught me mid-performance? This playlist doesn't play around, alright? It's classic after classic."
Nanami laughs softly, seeing how serious your face is with your words telling him that you mean every word. Though, now that he thinks about it, he doesn't recognize the songs from the small snippet he heard through the door to the moment you paused the songs. It makes him curious about them.
"Classics?"
You nod before taking your phone and standing by his side to show him your playlist. It is after a couple of swipes down that you realize he can't even read the titles of the songs since they are in Spanish.
"In Latin America." You clarify, getting an idea. You hand him your phone, tilting your head down as to give him permission. "Choose one, we'll put it on right now while I change my clothes."
He takes the phone and raises a brow as he tries to gauge the unfamiliar songs. "I don't even know what I am reading, dear." He deadpans, making you chuckle.
"Then choose one randomly." You say, guiding him to your bedroom so you can pick your clothes.
He looks at the phone, looking through the album covers of the song. He recognizes some of the artists that are part of mainstream pop culture, Shakira being the easiest to recognize. Yet, his finger presses onto a song that he doesn't recognize at all.
But you do and it's obvious from the way you slowly turn to look at him and instantly melt into a light sway of your hips to match the song's slow and romantic rhythm.
"I always knew you were a romantic at heart but I didn't know it came naturally to you." You tease, taking out a shirt and jeans that were much more suitable to go out than the baggier and frankly unflattering clothes. "Let alone that, but you also chose a classic among classics."
Sabor A Mi. Now that's a real gem across Latin America and generations. Guitar strings fill the air with a romantic and sensual sense that warms up the room while the yearning lyrics are contracted by the singer's soft whispers. More than a classic, it's romance 101 in music.
"I take it I chose a good one then." He hums, placing the phone on your nightstand, turning around to face away from you as you change. To him, even if you dated for quite a while now, that didn't give him a right to look. Even if you insisted there was no problem and that you didn't mind, he still turned around out of respect for you. No matter how many times he has seen you out of those clothes, he still wanted to be the gentleman that you first met.
The pure intention made you smile and the song amplified those butterflies in your stomach.
Quickly changing out and into your clothes, you walk over to him, wrapping your arms around his waist and placing your chin on his shoulders. As you begin to sway on the spot with the music, you whisper, "A great one."
He's quick to follow your lead, letting you set the rhythm you have become so used to dancing after a lifetime of hearing boleros like this one. He doesn't have to understand the lyrics to understand how intimate the song is. The guitar strings and soft melodies tell him that enough. Enough to pull you closer to him as you two sway to the song.
He looks down at him, your head now against his shoulder with your eyes closed. He can see how relaxed your face is, the sun sweeping through your window and occasionally hitting your face with its light just enough to decorate your features. If his heart was struck by you once before, this moment served as a reminder of that.
"It's a nice song." He says softly, his hand running down your arm until it finds your hand. He entwines his fingers with yours.
You hum, looking up at him and lifting your head off his shoulder. "You certainly know how to choose them." You tease, stretching your arm as you separate your body from his, your hands connecting the two of you as you hold the other's.
He sees you smile, brightly and softly in a way that tugs his heart. God, you were so pretty. Plucked strings encourage him to pull you closer once more, seeing you spin until his arm is wrapped around you and your back meets his chest with a giggle.
God, he was so lucky to have you.
"I do." He wasn't talking about the song.
The song ends but you two continue to dance. Swaying and spinning in your bedroom without a care in the world. How could a match this heavenly happen against all odds? When neither of you thought you would date someone from a culture so different from your own?
Neither of you thought about that. Not right now when you were dancing so gently and oh so passionately at the same time. No words exchanged, just smiles and hums. Maybe a kiss here and there that either managed to steal. But words? No, just your phone playing songs about love you never thought you would live.
Oh, how wrong were you.
How wrong were you to think that when this moment showed that you were not only loving and being loved, but you were doing so in the way these songs made you feel. It was a dream. It was luck. It was a movie. It was music. It was him. Him.
"Please send me these songs later." He says, breaking the silence.
"You're gonna study these later?" You tease, chuckling at the idea of Nanami listening to songs he doesn't know what they are about.
"Maybe." He chuckles, lifting your hand as he spins you around. "You said they were classics, didn't you? I have to know about them if we're going to keep dancing like this."
You smile at him. After so many people were disinterested and even critical of your culture to the point that you felt like having to keep it private, he wanted it to be included in your relationship. Even celebrate it in a way. Why does it even come as a surprise when he always looked at you in awe whenever you spoke Spanish? Even if he didn't know what you said, he would always have this curiosity towards that part of you that was once criticized.
Nanami knew how to love you, but now it was clear that he knew how to love the culture you were so in love with too.
"You're right. You have quite the content to go over then. So do I. Not only do I have to go over Japanese culture, I also have to study a bit of Danish, don't I?"
He chuckled, pulling you closer to him and letting you two become one with the music once more. The world melting away with just the two of you existing in this very room.
Yeah, there are bumps in the road. Misunderstandings and uncertainties that could sour what you two had. But it never did. Not when he was so patient in sharing and learning. Not when you were so excited to know more and explain what made you you. Culture could be tricky, but for the two of you, it was what made your relationship so enjoyable. You may have had different upbringings but you were still similar enough to work well together.
Though it was something the two of you already knew, it was something that was confirmed to Nanami once he translated the song he just happened to choose by chance earlier today. Our souls have become close enough that I keep your flavor and you keep mine all well. It was funny how a song he just happened to tap on happened to describe why you two worked so well. You had different cultures that entwined together once you became a couple, having pieces of each other's culture embedded into the other.
He thought it was just a wonderful idea that it became one of his favorite songs that you've shown him.
Dating someone from another culture is interesting, scary even. But life was kind to you and let you meet Nanami, someone with whom you could unapologetically share your culture knowing that it would be as cherished as every other part of you. Someone who made it easy to share both cultures until you created your own. A unique culture that was both him and you.
A culture that tasted of both you and him because of how much you loved each other and stayed by your side.
Neither of you would have it another way.

Hola Fairly!! How are you? How was your week? I hope it was great! Now I have two ideas (one for Christmas since my mall started decorating for the holidays even tho it's a month away 😭).
No1. Is Nanami and the reader get invited to a quinceañera (where it's readers niece's big day and wanted them to come). And it's Nanami's first time at such a big party (unlike those office parties) and all of the tias wanted a turn dancing with him as well as the little kids.
And No.2 is almost like my first ask (where teen Kento meets the reader's family and her mother tells Kento that she'll teach him recipes) And since during Christmas it's a family tradition (of mine) to make tamales! (Japanese Christmas is a bit different than others since they really don't do present exchanges) So he helps the reader's mother and then they open presents around midnight with the whole family! (While the little kids dogpile around him showing them their presents to him.)
Introvert Spotted at a Quinces // Nanami Kento x fem!reader
word count: 2.5k
cw: f!reader, latina-coded reader, fluff, ooc(? Nanami, established relationship.
summary: You and Nanami were invited to your niece's quinceañera, which is far from Nanami's usual science. Especially when all of the sudden, people from your family want to dance with him.
a/n: hello erigaur! thank you for calling! I've been good, getting cozy and warm now that the cold weather is here for reals. i cannot believe that your mall started decorating for Christmas on November! i usually save all that for December, which is why i will start on that second idea separately. For now, let's see how nanami does at this quinceañera.
liked this? show it with a like, reblog, and/or comment. each is greatly appreciated and celebrated!

Nanami loves you, there is not a thing he wouldn't do for you. He’s the kind of husband to get out of his comfort zone for you, to try new things he never thought of trying out. And getting out of his comfort zone he has ever since he started dating you, but nothing like today.
Oh no, today was different. Today wasn’t trying some dish or watching some series that you grew up with. It wasn’t something he could try within the comfort of his own home, in the quiet tranquility of the evening with the two of you alone behind closed doors. Instead, he was sitting by the table in this large venue filled with people he was still getting to know: your family. Meanwhile, you were on the dancefloor with your sister and a huge smile on your face as you danced to one song and got excited for the next one as soon as it started. Being in a party as big as this one, as loud as this one, was definitely something he wasn’t used to. Quinceañeras, or any parties like this for that matter, weren’t his thing.
When you told him about the party a few weeks ago, he noticed how hesitant you were about even going to the first place. Despite how much you loved your niece and wanted to commemorate such an important birthday, you still managed to put up some excuses. It’s gonna end super late, we could just send her a gift and stay home, I don’t even think I have something to wear, and many other silly reasons to not go. Even then, you shrugged your shoulders at your own with your eyes darting away from him, your tone laced with defensiveness. Nanami knew how to read between the lines and hear what you wouldn’t say—you wanted to go but you were putting him first.
It was one thing to go to those office parties he frequented and another to go to a quinceañera. It wasn't like he even liked those parties, it was work. He would show up, chit chat with coworkers about the most superficial things, and return home. But those parties were quiet, nothing too big or too personal. Quinceañeras were the opposite. Loud, filled with your family that he had married into, and bigger than what the word big denoted. Those kinds of parties simply didn’t line up with your quiet and introverted husband, you were worried that they would be too much to handle and make him uncomfortable.
But for you? Nothing was too much to handle, especially a party with your family no matter how much you tried to scare him into staying in his comfort zone. So he insisted on going. It wasn’t just because it would be bad manners to reject an invite without a valid reason, but he would hate to be holding you back from celebrating your niece’s coming of age party. Your family was his now and events like this were something he signed up for the moment he married you. These events were important for you because it meant seeing your family and because he genuinely wanted to engage with your family and be the husband you deserved, one that your family approved of.
This brings him here, looking at you dancing in your pretty dress that he bought you to avoid your excuses of having nothing to wear. You looked so pretty all dolled up, even with how dark the venue was and all the colorful lights shining all over the room, that was easy to appreciate for him. You always looked pretty, but it was events like this when you could really redefine what ‘pretty’ even means. He could just open up a dictionary and see a picture of you right now with that smile as the definition.
The way you were dancing, however, made him hum. You were letting loose, not caring who was looking as long as each song you danced to was better than the last. There were a few times you looked back at him and tilted your head back at him with a smile to invite him to join you, which was met with a wave of his hand as he shook his head. He was happy staying here at the table, guarding your purse as you danced away. Sure, it wasn’t his ideal night to sit alone at a party like this, but he didn’t mind it. You looked too happy for him to even consider pulling you away from this early than what you would’ve wanted.
“Wife left you all alone?”
Nanami turns to his side when a voice barely manages to break through the loud music, his eyes meeting your aunt sitting next to him. Nanami greets them, slightly nodding his head at her.
“She wanted to dance and I am a terrible dancer.” He answered, trying his best to make his voice heard through the music.
“Oh, come on. No one cares about that when they are having fun.” Your aunt laughed at his modesty, which caused Nanami to look back at you and then everyone else on the dance floor. Everyone seemed to just mind themselves.
“You’re right. Maybe I am still getting used to all this.” He chuckles, turning back to face your aunt. It was hard to talk considering how one had to shout if they wanted to keep the conversation going.
“Right, but that doesn’t mean you can’t let loose.” Your aunt suddenly stands up, extending her hand for Nanami to take. “I’m sure one dance can’t hurt, no?”
Nanami was taken back by the invitation to dance, making him a bit apprehensive to the idea. He truly meant it when he said he was a terrible dancer, at least when it came to this kind of music he wasn’t familiar with. However, the way your aunt was patiently waiting for Nanami to accept made him rethink it. It didn’t seem like she would take no for an answer and he did tell himself before coming here that this was his family now. Maybe one dance wouldn’t hurt.
He nods, placing your purse down on your seat and standing up to take your aunt’s hand. “Alright, ma’am. It’s not like we can talk with the music this loud.” He chuckles, trying to ease his uneasiness.
Your aunt laughs once more, agreeing with him once they reach the dance floor. “Maybe we can work on improving your dancing. I’m sure [Name] will appreciate that.”
Nanami nods once more, this time with a soft smile. He wasn’t opposed to the idea of that, after all, how many times has he danced with you in the comfort of your home? His hand on your lower back and yours on his shoulder. Or better yet, you holding his waist close as he holds your cheeks as the two of you sway back and forth. But that was different. That is when the two dance without needing any music, just doing what feels right.
That uneasiness was still present in him as your aunt was trying to show him how to dance to cumbia, to which he was mentally grateful that the genre of the songs changed to something much more tame. He tried his best to follow along, feeling his feet tangle themselves as he tried to follow that triangle step your aunt was so patiently teaching him. He just hoped he wasn’t making a fool of himself in front of your family, seeing how everyone else seemed to move with this flow and smoothness in their steps while he was still looking down at his feet to not trip over himself.
“See? You can dance!” Your aunt noted with a smile, taking his hand and guiding him to spin her around.
It might have been a bit clumsy in his eyes, but he was glad that his stiffness when dancing didn’t take anything away from her fun. Besides, it was nice to stretch his legs after so much time sitting alone on that table, so he kept dancing with your aunt as a way to spend his time in this quinceañera while you had your own fun.
One dance was one dance and your aunt did keep her promise, not wanting to overwhelm him about spending so much time with her, especially when he was kind enough to indulge her in a dance. But as soon as your aunt lets go of him, leaving to take care of things around the party, it seemed like other people had their eye on Nanami. The member of the family that has always been pretty reserved and polite was finally opening up to them even if it was just by dancing. How could they let this chance go to waste?
If it was like those office parties with people trying to strike up a conversation with him, Nanami would’ve found a way to politely cut the conversation short if he wasn’t in the mood to talk much. But it wasn’t like that. Not when different women from your family of all ages were trying to steal a dance with him. Even if he wanted to go back to his seat or sneak away to the bathroom for a few seconds of quietness, he couldn’t bring himself to say no. It wasn’t like he was fond of the idea of dancing so much tonight, but his own words were repeating in his head—this was his family too and he didn’t want you to think he was uncomfortable with them.
From dancing with your aunts and cousins to the small kids dancing close to him, one could easily see how Nanami was letting loose, shaking off his stoic demeanor that made him seem so unapproachable before if it weren’t for the many stories you share of him since you started dating. Instead, he was just making the best of it, taking a couple of notes from how you danced with your sister earlier—as if no one was watching. Even if that wasn’t the case considering how everyone seemed to be taking turns to be his dance partner, it was comforting to just not think much of it.
But of course, there was someone watching. You.
You had gotten away from the dancefloor to check on Nanami and get a sip of a drink, only to find that the table was empty. Thinking he had just gone to the bathroom, you sat down to give your feet a break, gently swaying in your seat to the music.
“I didn’t know Nanami had that in him.” You raised your brow at your sister, not sure as to what she meant by it.
“You know, I always pictured him as the type to just sit around in parties and just sulk around.” Your sister explained, nodding her head towards the dancefloor so you could understand. “Didn’t know you married quite the softie.” She adds with a chuckle.
Confused, you turn to the dance floor. At first, you don’t see anything out of the ordinary, let alone your husband there. That is until you make out his blonde hair, making you crane your head slightly to make him out amongst the crowd. When you finally get a good angle, sure enough, you see Nanami dancing. Even if that was rare on its own, he was slightly hunched over so he could hold the little girl’s hands as they danced, swinging them back and forth to the beat of the music. It wasn’t how you thought Nanami would spend the party.
It was adorable, seeing the wide smile on the little girl’s face as he danced with her. It made your heart flutter at the sight with a soft exhale of your lips. He was fitting in just fine, and there you were when that invite came, all worried about his comfort and trying to skip today. You’re glad you didn’t. You stand up, letting your sister know you had to make it up to him for leaving him on his own while you danced.
As Nanami danced around with the little girl, one of your niece’s, he suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder. Expecting another relative of yours, he meets your smile, making him stand up straight once the little girl lets go of his hands and runs off somewhere else.
“Is this the line to dance with Nanami Kento?” You teased, placing a hand on his shoulder as he turned around to face your body.
He chuckles, quickly placing his hands on the all-too-familiar spots of your waist and free hand. “It is. But you, Mrs. Nanami, get to skip the line.”
“Oh, lucky me, Mr. Nanami?” You giggled, ready to take the lead but surprised when he squeezed you lightly.
“Lucky you indeed, I had some practice.” He smirks, winking at you as he starts to lead. Though bachata was a type of dance he was still learning, he wasn’t holding himself too bad. You did catch him, however, flashing his eyes back and forth between you and his feet, making you giggle at how he was trying to do things just right.
Your hand leaves his shoulder, coming down to his chin and lifting it gently so his eyes meet yours. “Not bad, though you’re still a bit stiff.” You chuckled, teasing him a bit.
He hums, giving in to your lead as your hand goes lower to his back. “Then you’re just gonna have to help me practice.”
“You make it sound as if that is a bad thing.”
“It is when you’re an amazing dancer and I am not.” He says, lifting both of your hands to spin you around and then pull you closer to him, chest meeting chest.
“You’re just being modest. Even my aunts were telling me you were quite the dance partner, sounds like you were having fun without me.”
Nanami shrugs his shoulders. Parties like this were still not his thing. They were too loud to even hold a conversation, ended way too late for his liking, and simply different from how he preferred to spend his time. But he would lie if he said he didn’t enjoy himself at all. Even if he felt silly trying to keep up with your family and these kinds of events, he managed to catch your smile when you turned around to take him to the dancefloor, softening him up. Yes, Nanami is a reserved and quiet person. Parties, let alone quinceañeras, are not his thing. But he was learning to get comfortable with them, he wouldn’t let you have anything less than that.
“I still prefer to have you by my side. You make these events better.” He smiled, pressing his forehead against yours as you two danced. If the two of you were alone rather than at your niece’s quinceañera, trust that he would’ve already kissed you. However, he still had to maintain his image as a gentleman before your family.
“Does that mean you’re gonna join me when they play No Rompas Mas and Payaso del Rodeo?”
“Don’t push it, love.”
