Straw Hats and their superhero counterparts 🦸

I know not everyone is into comparing One Piece characters to superheroes, but I see some fascinating parallels:

Luffy and Superman: Both Luffy and Superman hail from a lineage destined for greatness, inheriting extraordinary power that sets them apart. Superman’s real name, Kal-El, and Luffy’s middle name, "D.," both carry significant weight in their worlds, symbolizing their roles in shaping their destinies. A key reason the Justice League was formed was because Superman tried to save everyone alone, only to realize he couldn’t be everywhere at once, leading to exhaustion and self-doubt. Luffy experienced a similar lesson—learning that his true strength comes from relying on his crew. Both heroes demonstrate that even the mightiest need support to achieve their goals. Edit: Luffy and Superman are both symbolically connected to the sun.

Zoro and Green Lantern: Samurai follow a strict code of honor, and Green Lanterns operate under a code of willpower and responsibility. Hal Jordan, like Zoro, may come off as a stickler for rules, but this stems from a deep sense of duty. Both characters wield powerful tools—Zoro with his swords and Green Lantern with his ring—that rely on their personal strength and rigorous training. Their abilities are enhanced by their unwavering commitment to their respective codes. Additionally, Green Lantern’s trust in Superman over Batman reflects Zoro’s loyalty and trust in Luffy, showcasing how both characters value leadership and vision in those they follow. Edit: Both Zoro and Hal Jordan have been described by some fans as having "no personality" because they often come across as stoic, serious, and primarily driven by their goals.

Usopp and Batman: Batman stands out in the Justice League as one of the few members without superpowers, relying instead on his intellect, gadgets, and relentless training. This is a perfect parallel to Usopp within the Straw Hat crew—often outmatched in terms of raw power, but never in resourcefulness or strategy. The comparison between Usopp and Batman is so strong that whenever Usopp’s battle with Luffy in Water 7 comes up, it’s often likened to a Batman v. Superman fight. Both characters lack traditional powers but make up for it with their smarts and sheer determination. Batman’s choice to embrace his fear of bats is similar to Usopp facing his own fears, particularly when dealing with foes like Perona and Sugar, who could easily fit into Batman’s rogues' gallery. Edit: Both Batman and Usopp face villains that are specifically designed to challenge their particular skill sets.

Sanji and The Flash: Both Sanji and The Flash have the meta-genetics angle locked down. Sanji, noted as the second fastest Straw Hat, can run on water, harness fire with his kicks, and is genetically enhanced—all traits that make him a natural parallel to The Flash. Depending on which Flash we’re talking about—Barry Allen or Wally West—Sanji also shares traits like compassion, moodiness, humor, and flirtatiousness. Both characters are deeply motivated by a desire to protect those they care about, and their abilities, though seemingly simple, are pushed to extraordinary limits. Just as The Flash turns his speed into a powerful force, Sanji’s leg-based combat and genetic enhancements make him a formidable fighter. Edit: Both of them have been struck by lightning, which also contributed to their abilities.

As for Nami, I’m still pondering who she might correlate with, but I’m sure there’s a fitting match out there. Just sharing some musings—it’s fun to explore these connections!

Turning Tides

chapter 2: Hard decisions, Harder Muscles.

I decided on accepting the invitation to have dinner with the fishmen, Arlong said he would allow me that time to figure out if I wanted to join them or not.

Honestly I still was undecided. I didn’t like what they did to the people of the village, especially bell-mere, but I had seen far worse done by the hands of humans. Unfortunately I had even been on the receiving end of it on a few occasions.

Things were different in town now. Everyone was hiding away in their homes, praying for the fishmen to leave them be, hoping their tribute money was enough to buy them some protection from the destruction.

I was lucky enough to be able to walk freely down the street without anyone bothering me. I headed to the woods to try and clear my head, whatever I decided would change the course of my life, and I wasn’t sure if I was ready for that or not, but at this rate I didn’t have much of a choice in the matter.

I sat on a large rock that overlooked a small stream that Nami often could be found playing with her sister when she wasn’t getting in trouble or trying to draw maps. She was a good kid for the most part, a little annoying sometimes, but what kid isn’t at her age….

I look up to the sky as my thoughts become even more of a mess. I’m drawn away from my dilemma for a moment when I realize a large body has situated itself near me, leaning against the rock.

“My sweet little thing, what’s going on in that head of yours?” Arlong’s deep voice rang out, startling me for a second.

“Uh um, I’m just thinking is all” I try to convince not only him but myself as well.

“Would that thinking perhaps be about a handsome shark fishman?” He said, sharp teeth on full display as he gave me a flirtatious smile.

“Well… kinda if I’m being honest” I state, not really sure if I could come up with a convincing enough answer other than the truth.

“Hmm, and what exactly are you thinking about?” He questioned me while taking a large finger and twirling it around a strand of my hair.

“I… I don’t know what to do… these people have been good to me, but… they don’t know the real me. I don’t think they deserve to be punished for existing though. That would make us no better than the people that sell our kind out for slavery” I state, eyebrows knitted and bottom lip pouting in conviction.

“You are too sweet, little one” murmured, his saw-like nose now inches away from my own.

“We are better than these humans, and they should learn their place. How about I make you a deal? Join me, stand by my side and I will not harm a head on anyone else in this village as long as they continue to pay their fees to me.” The shark fishman stated, looking me deep in my eyes.

“You really promise you won’t hurt them?” I ask, not sure if he was telling the truth or not.

“With you by my side, my sweet siren, I wouldn’t need to hurt them.” He replied coolly, a small smirk on his face.

“I’m sure that there would be more productive ways we could get out all of my frustrations” He purred as he began to run his long webbed fingers across my shoulders.

He was really attractive, his rippling muscles evident through the open shirt he had on, a gold chain across his neck and a matching bracelet on his wrist. He had sturdy legs that he must use to propel himself through the water.

He really was a magnificent sight to see.

“Okay…” I took a few deep breaths in and out before I looked him back in the eye. I held my back straight and with a confidence I was mostly just pretending to have.

Writing Rules:

I write paragraph style, no asterisks. Please use a minimum of two sentences per reply unless we’ve known each other for a while. Your grammar and English do not have to be perfect. So long as I can get the basics of what you’re saying then we’re fine to continue.

Shipping:

Shipping and smut only happens if there is chemistry between our characters. Muses must have a first meeting before any shipping officially happens unless muses know each other in canon.

NoTPs: Luffy will not ship with his brothers. Sanji will not ship with any of his siblings. The trio won't ship with villains barring some possible plotted AUs.

Canon and OCs:

This blog is OC friendly and encourages them to interact. 

For canon, I love to interact with most One Piece characters. I will not interact with Doflamingos though. Sorry.

Warnings:

Combat violence, swearing, and the like.

Dark themes may happen. They are a part of life as well as a part of One Piece. If something in particular bothers you, tell me so that I can tag it for you.

Smut:

Smut may be put under a “read more” but that is currently undecided. =

Smut is only for Muns and Muses over 18.

Oda: Hey, let’s introduce this incredibly badass/cool son of Big Mom and highlight his ability to use Observation Haki. Hey, didn’t I once emphasize that Sanji is specialising in Observation Haki as well? Yeah, right, I did that. So, why not give the two of them an epic stare down during the wedding? I like that, I really like that.

Also Oda: Alright now, who’s to take on Katakuri? Let’s have a look at Sanji’s past opponents ..

(and please keep in mind that the following numbers are a) just aesthetics and b) my personal opinion)

.. Kuroobi? (Surprisingly solid and on the ‘cooler’ side compared to Hachi)

.. The Unluckies? Nah, not a real-real fight.

.. Mr.2? (C’mon, I love Mr.2, but I wouldn’t exactly say that his design is somewhere near ‘cool’ in the ‘90s sense of the word)

.. Satori? (hahahahaha)

.. Enel/Eneru? (I don’t have an opinion on this one; also Worf effect)

.. Groggy Monsters? (Great fight for both Zoro and Sanji, but again, their opponent’s design wasn’t exactly on the ‘cool’ end of the spectrum)

.. Wanze? (Oh come on now.)

.. Blueno? (Too plain; also Worf effect)

.. Kalifa? (Not his designated fight, but damn, she was solid)

.. Jabra? (Can’t really say anything against him on the ‘coolness scale’, even though I felt that his upper body was too large in his animal form, but then again, so was Lucci’s)

.. Absalom? (Again, surprisingly solid. Back then I actually thought that we were moving into the right direction and I’d argue that Zoro had the ‘coolest’ opponent of the arc with Samurai Ryuma)

.. Movies? (I’ll disregard them because I simply don’t remember too much. But a gorilla and some pink ninja isn’t something to write home about, isn’t it?)

.. Duval? (Again, c’mon)

.. Wadatsumi? (See a pattern?)

.. Vergo? (Alright, I guess? Then again, I always thought that his design was way too plain; also Worf effect)

.. Doffy? (Never liked his design; also Worf effect)

.. Sheepshead? (Undecided)

.. Yonji (Does a fight in a manga happen if no one sees it? You be the judge of that)

.. Judge (Even though I tried, I can’t dig his appearance, he doesn’t seem regal or menacing or cool; also kind of a Worf effect; also he’s a jerk)

Katakuri is most definitely too cool for Sanji to fight, he’ll not even get a Worf effect this time. Just give him to Luffy. On we go!

Yes, this is probably not how he actually made the decision, but cynicism helps a lot to keep the salt in check. Have a great week!

PS: Spare me with stuff along the lines of “he’s the protagonist!” or “Sanji is too weak!”. I know, I really do, but since you’re clever enough to know the word “protagonist”, you might have actually heard of the “deuteragonist” (and Sanji undeniably is this during the WCI arc, maybe together with Nami, maybe she’s the tritagonist), too. If not, read up. And regarding Sanji being too weak .. yes. Yeah, sure. But power-ups are a common thing and he might even be too weak if he gets one. So? That’s what the Worf effect is for.

10 Facts About Me

Tagged by the lovely @mit-riko! <333 Thank you! Sorry it took me a month to reply to this. I have been in a deep slump, that I’m sort of just beginning to get out of.

1) Yes! Stuffed animals are love <3!!!! I still have several animals from childhood/when I was a teen. I’ve collected a couple new ones in recent years but they were all gifts. When I was a kid a slept with a giant stuffed dog called Fluffernutter that was probably the size of me XD. Now it’s just Rupert the teddy bear whom I’ve had since I was 14ish. He’s perfect hugging size. I am not dependent on stuffed animals to sleep, though and can do just fine without them, but if I don’t have a pillow to hug, I don’t really know what to do with my arm since I sleep on my side. I seem to manage somehow, though.

2) I don’t particularly like comedy as a genre. This doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy comedies or don’t have a sense of humor, but I almost never say “gee, I just want to read/watch something funny and silly.” I like drama and suspense and action way more. If there’s comedy mixed in, then that’s just an added bonus.

3) I’ve been playing video games since I was 3 years old. My first system was the SNES and my first game was Super Mario Bros. FF7 was my life for a long time, even though in retrospect I was probably too young to be playing it the first time I picked it up. I’m on the fence about a remake. My first Tales games was Symphonia, which oddly enough I didn’t fully appreciate the first time I played. I honestly am not sure why I played it a second time, but I did. And that’s how I stumbled onto other Tales games and fell in love with the franchise. I’ve now played Symphonia 5 times orz. (How did it come to this? It’s not even my fave). I still need to replay Abyss, to see if it’s still my fave because Berseria is a strong competitor.

4) I hate cooking. I’m slow at it, and there are a million things I’d rather be doing. I’m told that I’m good at it, but I’d still rather just have ready-to-eat food appear magically in front of me.

5) I have a really hard time watching movies by myself, no matter what the genre is. I don’t know what it is, but it’s like I can’t convince myself to just sit down and watch a single movie for a couple hours. I didn’t always use to be this way. Not sure what changed. I’m fine watching with other people, though.

6) I don’t cry often. So it always takes me by surprise if I tear up at something.

7) People consistently mistake me for being a teenager, or still in high school. I’m 26 XD

8) There was a time when I was literally addicted to League of Legends, no joke. Played it basically any free moment that I had. I was decent, I think. I’m an extremely competitive person, but I am not a rager, at least. I played mostly mid and support, but also some ADC. My faves to play were Zyra, Varus, Leona, Nami, and Ahri. I’ve stopped playing altogether. Occasionally I will join my friends for a game of Heroes of the Storm, though. I’m currently enjoying Li-ming, ETC, and Sylvanas.

9) I have ideas/characters for original stories, but excluding NaNoWriMo, I’ve never written them out since I was a kid. Partly, because I doubt people would even be interested in reading it. Also, I have one character whose name I’m still unsure of, and I’ve been undecided for a couple years now lol. I also feel like I need to catch up on my fanfic goals before I can touch anything else. I also feel like I write/type slowly.

10) I don’t have lofty career goals. I just wanna do science and be a cat mom.
