An international tribunal will investigate missing children and unmarked graves associated with Canada's residential school system, including public sessions in Montreal in 2026.
The Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, in partnership with Amnistie internationale Canada francophone (AICF), will host the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal.
Na'kuset, executive director at the Native Women's Shelter, said the organization is spearheading the effort to demand accountability for alleged crimes committed against Indigenous children at residential schools. The theme of the tribunal will be Âcimowin, which is a nêhiyawêwin (Plains Cree language) word meaning "true story" or "an account."
"It's an opportunity for us to show the world exactly what happened," she said. [...]

Coronavirus: COVID-19 infection rate climbs among Montreal’s homeless
Coronavirus: COVID-19 infection rate climbs among Montreal’s homeless
As COVID-19 cases continue to surge in Quebec, the number of infections among Montreal’s homeless community is rising rapidly and those working in the community are sounding the alarm. As Phil Carpenter reports, health officials announced measures to help deal with the increase last week but the community says it’s not enough. Source link

F*cking Valérie Plante promising to help the homelessness crisis all while homelessness has nearly quadrupled under her leadership in Montreal. And now she's evicting homeless people from their camps which only exist because they were evicted by the city. F*ck Montreal. I see newly homeless people every day in the metro. If anyone wants a French version of this post just send me an ask at el-shab-hussein and I'll gladly oblige.

Press release
For Immediate release
November 7th, 2022
Resilience Montreal's concern regarding imminent evictions under Ville Marie expressway.
The COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and other crises have exacerbated the number of people experiencing homelessness in the city. The population served at Resilience Montreal has more than doubled since 2020. The homeless population has been the most victimized by the pandemic, yet little has been done to address the housing crisis. With winter coming, it is more important than ever to put infrastructure in place to avoid certain deaths, like those of Raphael Andre and Elisapee Pootoogook.
As the needs of the homeless population have been ignored, they have found an alternative, establishing a "survival camp" under the Ville-Marie expressway. Why they are supported by Cabot Square mediators and staff from Resilience Montreal, little to no institutional supports are in place for them.
Over the past several weeks, those living in this community have been visited by police several times a day and told they they would have to leave their encampment imminently. Now, the SPVM says it will go ahead with evictions this Thursday, November 10th at 10AM [2022], in part due to complaints from residents living in the area. Despite the potentially devastating effects of this measure, no adequate alternatives have been offered to those who will be displaced when the evictions take place.
Shelters will tell you there are not enough beds available for the homeless population of Montreal. Those living under the bridge have experienced severe trauma, addiction, and mental health issues that can often render them ineligible for existing housing programs and current emergency shelter. Does this mean that the most vulnerable in the city are unworthy of basic human rights? In displacing these people, many of them will be left without any alternative but to sleep under more dangerous conditions. Have we learned nothing from May 2022 Ombudsan's report on homelessness?
"It's important that as we create an action plan for unhoused persons, that we put their voices and concerns at the forefront. Responsible communities think of the most marginalized first." - David Chapman, Executive Director at Resilience Montreal.
We ask for support from homeless activists and concerned community members to mobilize against this force displacement. Unhoused people living under the bridge deserve to be given realistic alternatives to their current solution.
"In 2022, force displacement has proven to be a tactic that does not work. We need to do better as a society." - Na'kuset, Executive Director of the Native Women's Shelter.

FULL NAME ► Grace Nakuset Cardinal AGE ► Nineteen GRADE ► Sophomore MAJOR ► Graphic Design ROOMMATE ► Clare Edwards
A B O U T:
+ adaptable, inquisitive, adventurous -  guarded, audacious, snarky
► THE BROKEN BIRD - characterized by an individual with a dark and troubled past, they’ve really been through the ringer, yet they’re still going. they may take on leadership / mentor roles and they tend to be on the more cynical side, they don’t tend to let their emotions show often.
H E A D C A N O N S:
Grace grew up with parents that abused drugs. She could write a whole book filled with horrible stories, but the worst would be the day she came home to her mother shot dead and her father nowhere to be found.
After her mothers death and her fathers disappearance, she spent her time from the age of ten in foster care, bouncing from foster home to foster home. Once she turned eighteen, and was never adopted, she was on her own.
In high school, Grace spent a lot of her time wrapped up in music. She knew music couldn’t be a legitimate career for her, but it was her only true friend during those years.
At the age of thirteen, she got her first job and has been working part time jobs and odd jobs ever since, saving up her money. She knew she’d never be adopted, so she had to make sure she could survive on her own.
Grace has gotten into a lot of trouble throughout her life, mostly minor things, like being present at protests or mouthing off in class. But she enjoys these small rushes of adrenaline.
Surprisingly, Grace received several scholarships and grants for college, though she’s pretty sure she got a few of them out of pure pity. Regardless, she knows she has to be at least a little better behaved in order to keep her scholarships.
C O N N E C T I O N S:
► Eli Goldsworthy (best friend) — Grace and Eli are two peas in a pod. Besides sharing a similar sense of style and opinions on music and movies, they relate to one another on a deeper level.  And their quick wits and conjoined cynicism make them a force to be reckoned with.
► Jonah Haak (nuisance) — Something about getting under Grace’s skin really gets Jonah off and so he finds every reason to be a personal nuisance to her, making a special effort to go out of his way to pester the girl. The best thing about being Grace’s number one aggravation is that she always seems to be able to give it right back to him, making for a witty and at times amusing banter between the pair.
► Jack Jones (childhood friend) — It’s easy when you’re young, you share your shovel in the sandbox, sit next to the new kid at lunch and you’re the best of friends. It’s how things started with these two girls, dating back to grade school when they were practically inseparable. However, as they got older the two girls started to drift apart, falling into separate cliques and taking up different hobbies until it seemed they were too different to stay close.
► Jeremy Edwards (friend) - Jer tends to rub people the wrong way without  meaning to sometimes and that’s exactly how this friendship started. He  made a comment that Grace didn’t like their first time meeting at the  hospital after running into each other, and then for the next week Jer  did everything in his power to try and fix it. Eventually, it worked and  the two were able to work things out and become quite close. Even  though they’re only recently friends, Jer would do anything for her.

FUNDRAISER SCREENING: "Innu Nikamu : Chanter la résistance"
The festival is now 2 weeks away! Join us at Casa del Popolo on the last afternoon of Lux Magna for a special screening of Innu Nikamu : Chanter La Résistance, a 2017 documentary feature film by filmmaker Kevin Bacon Hervieux.
The film explores the origins and evolution of the Innu Nikamu Festival, closely linked to the cultural and territorial roots of the Innu and more particularly to the life of the Mani-Utenam community. In the 20th century, the Notre-Dame residential school in Mani-Utenam, which uprooted young Innu people from the North Shore from their families, territories and cultures, was part of an assimilation program imposed by the federal government across the country and left an indelible scar in the community.
Director Kevin Bacon Hervieux shares the resilience of the festival's founders, musicians, craftspeople and collaborators who inspired the hope of a people in distress, daring to believe that the challenge of re-appropriating their culture and language was not impossible. The film will be screened in French with English subtitles. Whether Kevin will Skype in for the post-screening discussion, or if it will happen in person, is a surprise! You’ll just have to find out yourself. 👀
The event is co-presented by La Lumière collective, and all ticket sales will go to Resilience Montreal, a new day shelter located at Cabot Square. Entry is 5$ PWYC, however we will also be collecting donations throughout the event, as well as canned goods and various items needed by the shelter. We are very excited to have Nakuset, executive director of the Native Women’s Shelter, joining us before the screening to let us know about the work that has gone into making Resilience a reality.

At least three Quebec group homes or rehabilitation centres for youth stand accused of discouraging Indigenous children from speaking their languages and, in some cases, punishing them for doing it, according to sources and public testimony — allegations that are flatly denied by the health boards overseeing the facilities.
Sources expressed concern that the practice is reminiscent of what was done for decades in Canada's residential school system.
At two Montreal group homes, under the jurisdiction of Batshaw Youth and Family Services and the CIUSSS Ouest-de-l'Ile-de-Montréal, several youth were told they could not speak Inuktitut among themselves, said a person with knowledge of the Batshaw's operations.
CBC News has agreed not to name the person to allow them to speak freely, without compromising their work.
"They were being told constantly 'No, no, English. No, English,'" said the source, saying staff framed it as a safety issue.
The source said staff felt they needed to be able to understand what the youth were saying, so they'd know if they were planning to run away or do something else that could be harmful.
In a statement, Batshaw said that "no restrictions are imposed on the languages these young people can use in expressing themselves unless there is an exceptional incident wherein the safety of the youth or another person is threatened."
But the source said, "For me, it's just a continuation of residential [schools] abuse. 'Don't speak your language. Here, you're going to assimilate.'"
In Canada's residential schools, the last of which closed in 1996, students were often severely punished for speaking their first language or practising Indigenous traditions.Protecting the right of Indigenous people to speak their own language was a key recommendation made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Nakuset, executive director of the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, said she also became aware of the situation because of her advisory role with Batshaw.
"How can we still be doing this? How come the social worker or whoever it is, the person in charge, thinks that this is OK?" she said.
