渚のシンドバッド | LIKE GRAINS OF SAND (1995) dir. Ryosuke Hashiguchi Shuji Ito is a shy boy in the top class at secondary school. He feels attracted to his classmate and best friend Yoshida, who is not aware of Ito's intimate feelings. The two spend time with Tōru Kanbara, whose comic actions hide his sensitive nature. Kasane Aihara is new at school and remains aloof with her cool attitude. No one knows that at her previous school she was assaulted and is now in therapy. Meanwhile, Yoshida, who is currently involved with the insecure Shimizu, is interested in Aihara, the mysterious new girl. Each teen is hiding behind a wall which they must break through during this tough process of maturation. (link in title)

Spoilers for Like Grains of Sand (Nagisa no Shindobaddo), a 1995 film by queer director Ryosuke Hashiguchi that won Best Feature Film at the 1997 Torino International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. tw: rape mention.

In this scene, Ito and Aihara have just come from their own respective appointments with their psychologists. Neither of them knew that the other was going to therapy, until now. We learn from their scenes speaking with their therapists that Ito is putting on a brave, casual face, but holds a lot of shame and is sorting through all of society’s ideas about love, sex, heterosexuality, etc. We also learn that Aihara was previously raped. And that, naturally, she now doesn’t trust people or believe their motives.  Aihara calls out to Ito as he leaves his appointment, and in spite of the fact that Ito hasn’t liked her too much so far, they wind up walking home together. Before, Aihara teased Ito about having a crush on a male classmate (Yoshida). But this time around she asks him earnestly if he’s confessed to him yet. Ito picks up on this earnestness and tells her very truthfully and vulnerably that he has, and that he was - unsurprisingly - rejected. He laughs it off, but as the audience we understand that him telling her this information is a big deal.  Aihara a moment before had asked Ito what he was asking his therapist about when he was saying weird stuff like “aaah and ooooh”. He chastises her for eavesdropping and they drop the topic. But after he says that he confessed to Yoshida, he says that after being rejected he kind of lost hope of finding love and thought about doing sex work. That’s when Aihara says “so if you do that would you say aaaah and ooooh?” Ito laughs and says “yeah, I guess I would.”  So Aihara turns to look out over this river and yells “aaaaah and ooooh!” to the ether. Ito, smiling, yells it again, louder. “Aaaaah and oooooh!!” She smiles and yells it again. “Aaah and ooooooh!!” The scene ends there. But to me this moment is so powerful. Here we have two kids who for very different reasons have had their feelings about intimacy - specifically sex - become very complicated, scary, connected to trauma, and inextricably tied up with a massive amount of shame.  And without explicitly saying so to each other, they take this moment to take their power back. They laugh in the face of their fear of intimacy and sex. They say “I’m not scared of you. I’m not ashamed.” It’s a seriously beautiful and powerful scene. (dm me if you want a link to this movie. Some of these subtitles are obviously imprecise/a little off, but that’s okay! It’s just nice and interesting for me to finally see subtitles on this, since I watched it raw.

First panel skips a line. “What they were saying… it’s true. So…” and then Yoshida-kun says “…well, okay. That’s fine (isn’t it?).” Just accepts his coming out - literally kinda does the “I brushed it off” thing lmao.

Then Itou-kun confesses his crush. And Yoshida-kun says “I see/Got it” and Itou-kun is like “(no but like) I’m serious/I seriously like you/I Like like you” and Yoshida-kun is like “I told you I got it”

It makes you sick < cause it’s gross

“No (I don’t think it’s gross), I just don’t want to”

“I don’t meant it” clearly isn’t quite right but I can’t remember what he said there so ah well.

The end of my edits. So happy to see that a subtitled version exists somewhere! I have no idea where to find it though 😭 OP if you have any insight I would love to know where I could watch a subbed version! There are a couple lines I definitely missed, so. Ty 💓

Oh also!! I forgot to say!! I can’t believe Itou-kun invented bravery. God. Honestly good for him!!!

Love this scene so much, I find it very realistic and sweet.

Been called one of the best movies to come out of Japan in the 90s, Ayumi Hamasaki is in it before she became a singer and absolutely slays, heartstring-pulling representation of young love/queer awakening. 12/10 recommend dm me for this link too
