thoughts on like grains of sand

i was put onto this film by a writer i follow on instagram -- who basically posted on nye going "if you're alone and you're wondering what to do maybe watch this movie because it's one of my favourite films" and so i spent a couple hours finding a decent stream to watch it.

shot back in 1995 the film is directed in a very naturalistic manner. there's long, extended cuts where characters talk and move across sets. student drama is allowed to unfold without constant cutting. while sometimes the extended cuts are soporific, other times they allow tension to build to unbearable levels. it's very difficult to watch bullying as a viewer and not have it cut away. no, the director says, you're going to view it in all of its banal evil. don't look away.

even as the film approaches difficult topics like classroom bullying, sexual assault and sexuality, it does so with a strange beauty. i took so many screenshots of the film as i watched because the cinematography and blocking of the film is just on point. there's also the casting of ayumi hamasaki as aihara: her aloof presence adds a surrealness to the world. and why shouldn't she be surreal? her world was completely turned upside down at her old school when she was assaulted. to aihara there's no need to play by conventions of niceness. not after what happened to her the year before.

aihara is drawn to ito, the closeted boy who is trying to unfurl his sexuality even while he lives with his divorced dad. there's a blink and you miss it scene where his dad shows him a letter from an older gay man asking to be ito's sugar daddy. the implication that ito has advertised himself in the papers, looking for another man is swept aside very quickly. he has to bear the burden of playing a boy in the closet. i'm not entirely sure if he always rises to the task. but there's a hint of greatness in him at the opening scene, when he sits down at yoshida's desk and smells his clothes, eyes shut tight because no one is there to see him. it's lovely.

by the end of the film there's a climax between aihara, ito and yoshida. they're all by the beach and yoshida mistakes ito (wearing aihara's dress) for the girl he thinks he likes. aihara speaks ito's desires aloud to yoshida: would you love me? would you love me as a boy? there's a sort of poignancy to this whole exchange but at the same time, the scene feels slack with no tension. we know what yoshida's going to say. we know ito's going to be heartbroken. but it's a beautiful sort of heartbreak, to see queerness represented on the screen and placed in the center of the ending. the three teenagers lying down in the sand, confused at the people they are becoming. then they go home.
