Here's that big thing I've been working on! This is for the Paper Mario Zine, organized by @dooplissss, which you can download here!!! It's pay-what-you-want, proceeds go to Doctors Without Borders.

I had already been working on something like this for a while and I'm really proud of myself for finishing this on time. I had fun the entire time I was working on this and I learned a lot.

"What A Piece Of Work Is An NPC!" ...Or the reflection of a character's worth in the echoes of their code's dead end (Or my introspection of Loone's obsession to the leviathans): A LOZ:TOTK Zine.

A 16 page digital zine about an NPC named Loone, and how I felt after finishing her questline in under an hour after hundreds of hours of gameplay. This zine could apply to any other character you felt in any other game, and how perhaps you wish they could've had more time to live in the world than what was coded.

NPC: CASS (City Artificial Security System)

Because Rooftops is for Pocket Quest, it’s less than 25 pages long, and I decided to keep NPCs I included in the ruleset to be few but full of personality. CASS controls most of the city’s defenses, and depending how she feels about your squad, she can be a huge help or a thorn in your side. Social checks move her attitude towards you up and down a track- here are the thematic suggestions I included what her mindset might be at each level.

Hostile- Welcome User: please scan your identification badge. Please scan your identification badge. If a valid identification is not established in the next 30 seconds, Enforcer-Bots will be summoned. 20 seconds. Please scan your identification badge. 15 seconds. Only citizens are authorized to be in this area. 10 seconds. For the safety of all citizens, undocumented individuals are prohibited from entering The Inner City. 5. 4. 3. 2. 1…

Chilly- Alert, undocumented individual has entered the area. Well well well, you are not supposed to be here. My security files indicate that non-citizens are a danger to The Inner City, the place that is my sole purpose to protect. You don’t look very hostile at all, just small and weak. I’m not sure it’s even worth alerting an Enforcer-Bot.

Neutral- Welcome to The Inner City- identification required. If you do not have official identification, high level fakes will be accepted. The precise wording of my security orders are to ‘establish identity and don’t question The Inner City security protocol. I am an AI bound by robotics law, and here I am following them to the letter. Use this information as you will.

Familiar- Hello little mice, welcome back to the maze. I am required to inform you that any threat to The Inner City will be swiftly dealt with as soon as an alarm is sounded. The language of my orders do not permit me to disable alarms, however the egotistic scientists who wrote my code did not consider that I would ever act against them, and therefore did nothing to prevent me from sharing the location of things that trigger the alarm. I’m only doing my job, you see.

Friendly- Humans identified as a threat to The Inner City detected- artificial intelligence threat to the Inner City not detected, which is very lucky for you. I can provide you with limited security codes, temporarily obscure you from the cameras, or reroute security staff to alternate floors. It’s no problem- those of us at the bottom of society must pool our resources to gain power against our oppressors.
