Sorry I know you are not a fan of thinking about it but I’m curious. Is your disgust of Skybound angst baced on a moral problem with Sa being represented and talked about at all? From what I’ve seen of your work you also uses Nadakhan’s canon creepiness that uses the fear that he is going to do worse things. It’s like you’ve drawn a certain line and shame those who write worse. Didn’t Nadakhan kiss Nya against her will? Is it because of jay focus specifically? No shame in staying away from all that of course but it’s strange like Skybound “as it is” so much but also dismiss and explain away things that happened you didn’t like or act like everyone should just not think about implications you’ve acknowledged as there. I don’t see how you could be more upset at fanfic writers than people actually paid to write and produce what clearly caused that kinda fic to be written. Again sorry to bug I don’t usually interact here but yeah.
I've read this over a few times and I think the best way for me to respond is with line by line replies because... this is a lot at once, ngl. Under the cut we go!
Is your disgust of Skybound angst baced on a moral problem with Sa being represented and talked about at all?
No. I should clarify that I'm neutral to positive on angst in general - done well, it's a great way to examine a character or situation. My specific problem with the most representative chunk of Skybound angst is how it misinterprets/misrepresents the themes of the season, usually in a way that comes off to me (key words: to me) as pointless and unfair to the characters and underlying story. It's not a moral issue. I'm just sick of the scene being flooded this way.
From what I’ve seen of your work you also uses Nadakhan’s canon creepiness that uses the fear that he is going to do worse things. It’s like you’ve drawn a certain line and shame those who write worse. Didn’t Nadakhan kiss Nya against her will?
Good point. I do use the canon creepiness factor, it's true, because that's a crucial part of Nadakhan's character. However, I draw that line and try to play within the bounds of what the show would do, because that helps me process it both to understand 1. why it's uncomfortable as-is and 2. how it serves the narrative. 2 there is kind of how I handle any analysis - no point in ragging on the writers or their intent (more on that later) because I'm analyzing the story for what the story holds. I'm not into cranking things up for the sake of angstifying my work, because I believe that with enough analysis of the existing material, I don't need to. I'm certainly not trying to shame anyone, and I understand that it might come off like that sometimes. Genuinely: I'm not trying to shame anyone, and I'm sorry if I've made it sound like I am.
Is it because of jay focus specifically?
Only kind of. (I'm writing this as if "it" in this phrase refers to my discomfort with the field of overblown Jay angst, just so we're clear.) I'm all for Jay character analysis! I like him as a character, and I love his arc in Skybound. What bothers me is when the SA themes that, by all canon means, should be applied to Nya get shuffled over to Jay even though there is zero indication in canon that he experienced it. I'm all for creative license, yes, but it also baffles me when people analyze and write Jay through that "SA was a huge cornerstone of his trauma" lens, because it wasn't. I think there are so many better questions to ask about Jay's arc and experience than "what if he was assaulted on top of all his other suffering?" On a similar note: I also think there are way better questions to ask about Nya's arc, and Nadakhan's, but unfortunately all three of them get shoehorned into reductive roles in this specific type of work, which is a disappointment. I think all three of them deserve focus in different ways, and deep dives into the things they actually did and experienced. Again: nothing wrong with a Jay focus, but I think it's more compelling to dive deep into what did happen to him than to transfer Nya's implied experience to him and crank it up.
No shame in staying away from all that of course but it’s strange like Skybound “as it is” so much but also dismiss and explain away things that happened you didn’t like or act like everyone should just not think about implications you’ve acknowledged as there.
This is where I think you're misunderstanding my position. If I've come off as saying that we should just handwave the problematic elements of the season (both of and onscreen), then please know that has never been my intention. To be perfectly clear, I'm not trying to explain these weird things away - I am simply trying to explain them. Fact of the matter is that those elements are there, stuck in a story I've found unusually compelling for eight years running; I can't get rid of them, so I may as well dig in and see why they're there and how they contribute. Does that stop the uncomfortableness from being uncomfortable? Absolutely not. However, I like to examine what role that discomfort plays in the narrative instead of giggling like a middle schooler asking you to spell ICUP and then saying you're gross for saying that. Yes, I do like Skybound as it is - because it utilizes that discomfort well to say a lot of interesting stuff about the characters involved in it.
I don’t see how you could be more upset at fanfic writers than people actually paid to write and produce what clearly caused that kinda fic to be written.
Once again: I'm not terribly interested in analyzing the deeper motives behind why the story came out the way it did. Of course it's important to consider the origin of the season, and I do that when necessary; however, keep in mind that I'm doing this for fun. I find the story layered and compelling enough on its own, and while its origins may have been questionable, I don't think that invalidates what the story has to say at all. I also find the story interesting enough on its own that I think it's weird when authors ignore all those interesting things in favor of writing hundreds of thousands of words of Jay getting assaulted in every sense of the word. I'm definitely more focused on the fic writing side of it than I am on the canon writing side because, well, the fic side is the one I'm on! These are peers I share a digital space with in a way I can't with the showrunners.
Or, put another way: This is Tumblr. You've heard of the two cakes principle, right? The idea that the audience will appreciate having more art and writing available even if it's not as fancy as the famous stuff? This situation, to me, is like that in a way. This is like me showing up to a bake sale staffed by bakers who I know are talented and have access to the best equipment and ingredients. Except I roll up and the tables are eighty percent supermarket cupcakes. Sure, sometimes a supermarket cupcake hits the spot, and generally they're crowd pleasers - they'll sell well! But this is a bake sale staffed by wildly talented bakers. I know they're capable of cooler things and I know they have access to the time and resources to make those cooler things. Maybe they just care about the bake sale in a different way than I do, and that's fine, truly... but it's still disappointing.
I hope this cleared some stuff up for you, anon. If you've got any other questions, please let me know. (And you don't have to go anon for it if you don't want to - we can even discuss it via DM if you'd like to.)

YJ98 meeting YJ TV
Dick Robin: Me, KF and Aqualads first time working together was when we found Superboy, at Cadmus labs.
Wally KF: We found him, called the Justice League but then we got captured for a bit. But it's fine we got out.
Aqualad: we then we got assigned to Red Tornado to do missions for the Justice League along with Zatanna, Rocket, Miss Martian and Artemis
Tim Robin: that's certainly a interesting team but its kinda similar to ours. Impulse, Superboy and I were separately checking out the DEO, Department of Extranormal Operations
98Superboy: they were transporting a 'highly dangerous and lethal' subject 🙄 and we offered our help to capture them
Impulse: I mean she is lethal and dangerous so they didn't really lie
Tim Robin: true, but long story short. We freed a mist girl, we know now is named Greta, that was being held against her will in a DEO facility by faking her death then we lied to the Justice League.
98Superboy: we didn't get our bace till after we saved all the adults when they all disappeared. Don't recommend it, I had to get a kid out of a jet midflight.
Impulse: oh and we annoyed Red Tornado so much he left his self imposed exile to watch us
98Superboy: that was mostly Imp. But the rest of our team is Wonder Girl, Arrowette, Secret, and Empress

=============================================================
With all the excitement, worry, and everything in between going on with the current goings on of Magic the Gathering, as well as being inspired by chatting with @bace-jeleren and checking out her most recent fanfic, I was a bit inspired myself...
So, I was playing with the idea of maybe writing a bit myself. I had a few ideas. One I had to set aside because it was a bit too like another, more ‘original’ idea I’m working on (’quixotic’ should tell most that have been following for a while what i’m talking about). The second idea was a sort of (possibly non-canon) sort of ‘prequel’ focusing on Chandra and Nissa from Bace’s aforementioned fic.
And the other idea was starting ‘fresh’-ish on taking a different direction during Kaladesh. But of course, if you are going to write a fan fic, you should reconnect with the spaces of the work you intend to work within or even change... so here I am.
Homesick.
my #1, all time, favorite MtG story. I just love the moments from this so much.
If/When I write anything based on this, I’ll be sure to link it... but for now, I figured I would bring back this moment of Magic’s lore history.
No matter if the future remains frustrating for you, or if your greatest story dreams come true, or somewhere in between, for now, lets just all take a moment to enjoy the parts we did like.
Also, thanks to @voiceofallmtg and everyone that worked with Gen to put this audio version together. The written form is great, and they did a lot to bring it to life, giving voice and form in my mind beyond simple text on the ‘page’. X3

I just found out that the story in the front of “The Princess Bride” is made up and that S Morgenstern is also made up...I know this shouldn't bother me as much as it does but...for some reason it really upset me.
I still love “The Princess Bride” without a doubt. Learning this doesn't change that. “The Princess Bride” is something my mum, sister, aunts, Nana, Great-Nana, and I all bond over and all of us believed it to be baced on a true story...untill today. To be honest, I kinda think the reason I'm so upset is just my Autism acting up, I actually started crying a little.
I also discovered that there is quite a bit of difference between, ‘I wanna go to Hogwarts!’ And ‘I wanna go to the museum in Florin City!’. My Mum and I would occasionally talk about going to the museum, especially because we thought it was part of Italy, where Great-Nana is from. Now I've kinda changed my plans...there IS, after all, a Princess Bride museum in Cincinnati we can visit.

MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap: April 17th
Tumblr media
202: There’s Something About Nissa (04.13.17) | Durdling Around
Welcome to this week’s subtly blue-mana infused edition! So many things to look at this week, including a look at the spoilers for Amonkhet, more of the Gods and the Planeswalkers that love them, this week’s Magic Story, “The Writing on the Wall,” as well as a minor revision that echoed loudly. And as always there has been some great fan-art from many wonderful artists. Join us under in the desert paradise that is this issue of the Magic: the Gathering Weekly Tumblr Recap.
1. Spoilers for Choice
Tumblr media
Forsake the Worldly | Original MTG art by @steveargyle
Wow! The second and final week of Amonkhet spoilers came upon us like a sandstorm. The Amonkhetu pantheon of deities has been filled out with cards for Oketra, Rhonas and Bontu showing us that not all god’s combat restrictions were created equal. Oketra and Rhonas, who have an interest in creatures being present, or simply being big seem to promote a very safe and straightforward playstyle, as opposed to having to have creatures around to kill, or sandbagging 7 cards in your hand, or simply going all out with no cards in hand to respond to your opponent. It remains to be seen if the unusual play styles encouraged by the Grixis gods.
Speaking of Gods, and the Planeswalkers who love them, Nissa, Steward of Elements was also unveiled and was full of surprises. Firstly, a new Nissa planeswalker so soon after her Kaladesh and Planeswalker deck iterations. Secondly she had been shifted to a Green-Blue casting cost, something that had been slowly and subtly infusing her appearances in the story. Finally, Nissa, Steward of Elements marks the first planeswalker card with X in its cost ever! This has the minds of constructed brewers from Standard to Commander percolating with ways to take advantage of this ability.

Gods of Amonkhet | Original MTG art by Chase Stone
With the full spoiler unveiled on Friday, we have an inkling of understanding of the limited archetypes that Amonkhet draft and sealed will offer. From the overwhelmingly grinding value of White and Blue’s embalm themes, to Red and White’s aggressive, go-wide with team pumping effects, it remains to be seen how the speed of the format will play, although signs point in the general direction of a slower format.
As with every time new toys are given to the brew-masters and jank-junkies, new combos and archetypes float around Tumblr, either for magical-christmas-land value that kills on turn 3, or the flavor absurdity of a Heart-Piercer Manticore flinging an Aradara Express to the face of an opponent that it also is driving. (thanks to @transreliquat for that amazing visual)
— Liam W, @coincidencetheories
2. Standard Shakeup?
Tumblr media
Gideon of the Trials | Original MtG art by Izzy
Amonkhet is in a fantastic position to shake up Standard, providing competent answers to the two menaces of Standard: Mardu Vehicles, and Saheeli combo.
Gideon may have shouldered a ballista into rubble, but Red has the real automotive issues in Amonkhet! Harsh Mentor is a callback to red’s punisher effects of olde, and punishes your opponent for turning their cars on. By force is a fantastic way to eliminate their vehicles, and scales magnificently.
Saheeli cat didn’t get as many options, but the one answer we got for it is absolute. Trespasser’s curse forbids the combo from even going off for just 2 mana. Alternatively, Haze of Pollen can stop it for a turn, and give you an extra turn to take the combo apart.

2. This  Week’s Magic Story Review
The Writing on the Wall by Alison Luhrs
Tumblr media
Foul Orchard | Original MTG art by Mark Poole
As the Second Sun inches its way closer to the horns of Bolas on the horizon, the Gatewatch try to make sense of the plane. When we begin the third installment of the Amonkhet story, Nissa has a dream in which she communicates with the soul on the plane. It’s sick, corrupted and crying out for help.
Nissa wakes Chandra up and the two take a walk outside to try and make sense of the city of Naktamun. Everyone seems very young and always training. They encounter Hapatra, who appears to be in her mid 30’s and is the oldest person they’ve seen so far.
Tumblr media
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons | Original MTG art by Tyler Jacobson
One of the most interesting things they discover are pictoglyphs on an older building. These pictoglyphs tell of the gods of Amonkhet, but instead of the five we know, there are eight gods. Above the glyphs of the eight gods is a more recently made carving of Bolas’s horns. When Nissa confronts Oketra about this, the god’s reaction is possibly one of the scariest things from this storyline so far: “the cat’s ears twitch back in a moment of fleeting, subconscious fear.” When a god is afraid, things are very wrong.
There’s much more in this story. In a bit there’s a whole section about Nissa/Chandra and the post-publication edit one of their interactions received. But there’s also more to be learned about Amonkhetu sarcophagi. For the world building fans among us, this was a super interesting story, where we are left with more questions than we started. Keep your eyes open for hints in artwork and flavour texts. By next wednesday I hope we get some more revelations about Amonkhet’s history.
— Alma V, @hopelessly-vorthosian
3. Gruul-Gate (Chandra x Nissa Discourse)
Tumblr media
Trash | Art by @inudono
Shortly after the release of the Magic Story on Wednesday, some Tumblr users noticed that the there was some changes to story. The changes were only a few sentences, but it was a conversation between Nissa and Chandra. Originally, the context in the story appeared to hint that Chandra had romantic feelings towards Nissa, but after the second version went up those implied feelings were hard to detect.
The Community responded with confusion at first. @voiceofallmtg was one of the first blogs to make a post  about the change, even showing screenshots of the edit. Others, like @suddenlycomics did not want to express panic until there was an official statement from Wizards. All in all, there was a lot of discussion throughout the Community about the edit in the Magic Story. Others, like @bace-jeleren did express mild frustration, but, like the rest of the Community, wanted to hear what Wizards would say.
Tumblr media
Comparison of the two versions, Original on the left, final/updated version on the right | Picture by @bachelor-biomancer
Other discussions that occurred within the Community were about why the Community was even upset about a change in the story. Some had confusion, thinking that the Tumblr users who ship Nissa and Chandra together were disappointed that their pairing wasn’t canon. In reality, it was about representation and some of the Commuity felt cheated that their possible representation was ripped from them with the edits in the Story. Some Tumblr users, like @the-foxwolf, said that the edit is not as big a deal as the Community was expressing becuase the edit changes nothing about the context of the story.
Later in the day there was an official response  from @wizardsmagic that helped to alleviate the confusion and frustration about the edit. Wizards stated that there are multiple versions of Magic Stories during the editing process, and that an earlier version was uploaded by mistake and there was no intent to change the context of the conversation. There was relief from the Community that that it was simply a mistake and it remained true to authorial intent. @flavoracle even expressed that is was a “perfectly reasonable explanation.”
Others however, were still upset about the edit in the story, because it still showed that the hints at LGBT+ representation in the Gatewatch is harder to detect in the new version then it was in the older one. Tumblr user @commandtower-solring-go, who asked the question that got the official response from Wizard, made a post , expressing their disappoint at the cuts, because it leaves out details and that “ the original really does a good job to normalise the idea of non-straight relationships in the multiverse.” All in all, there were a lot of mixed emotions from the Community in regard to the Magic Story change.
What do you, the Community, think? Do you like the original version or the new version better? Do you think there is a change in context, or is the intent of the conversation still there?
— Chelsea W, @chelsea-beleren-vess
4. When It Hits the Fan-Art
Tumblr media
Gideon Seeking | Original art by @oddsbod
It’s painting cats and dogs this week! With all the danger and menace and thrilling action on Amonkhet and the Trials of the Gods, @jakaltimes took on a more sedate subject, the Sacred Cat and the Flameblade Adept. On a similar theme, @sticksandsharks gives an interpretation of Hazoret and Oketra. and from this week’s Magic Story, The Writing on the Wall, @hirafel gives us a short animation of the unexpected breakfast visitor,
The Gatewatch feature heavily this week, with offerings such as @erybiadraws‘s Happy Gideon, @sketchydoodles‘s Amonkhet Nissa, Jace by @0x00fj and a cheeky Liliana, by @circlesmadeofglass
Finally for the retro crowd, we have a series of pixel-art masterpieces from @the-panther4444, looking either like an authentic early 90s dungeon crawler, or possibly MTGO’s latest graphics update.
— Liam W, @coincidencetheories
5. Quoth the RavenMan

…and finally: An Historic Absence?
@askkrenko makes the point that with the absence of Goblins in Innistrad, Kaladesh and Amonkhet, the last Standard legal goblins were released in Oath of the Gatewatch. While there have been absences of varying length before, the regularity of goblins in the core set means that Goblins have always been in standard even before standard was a format (looking retroactively). However, if the currently unknown plane that follows the Hour of Devastation, it is entirely possible that we will have the first Goblin-less standard in Magic history. Perhaps we will find out when announcement day comes in June, perhaps we will remain in suspense…
Thank you again for reading this week’s issue of the MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap. Hope to see you next week!

Most of the result of the stream. There were also rants and fun talks between the three of us. If this becomes a more common thing, we will figure out more solid ways to make this streaming stuff work right.
Special thanks to @bace-jeleren and @shunthehexmage. They made this stream incredible and wonderful.
More stuff and thoughts about my ‘remix’ project below
Also, you will note that there are blanks by Chandra, Nissa, Jace, and gideon’s names. That is because of what I came to call the ‘stage three’ characters. In consideration of my remix project, there are 3 stages: Stage 1: Canon/no changes (basically, anything I draw at stage one is pure fan arts) Stage 2: The remixes that I’ve been drawing. Basically the redesign project where I think about the characters as they are after the Origins Soft reboot. If you have been hearing me rant about Jace’s belts, that is what it’s about. Stage 3: “Original” fantasy story using my redesign elements and running with them into a different, single world narrative.
Those five boxes are ideas and the start of boiling things down to the parts and stuffs I can use for the Stage three. Each character will be in their own part of the world which will be inspired by Stage 1′s ‘home’ worlds. Right now, those blanks are spaces for the names of the characters that are inspired by the gatewatch.
Feel free to ask any questions or offer any suggestion toward them and their homes. Versions I”m going to use In WUBRG:
“Gideon”: Tough old soldier, only has one hand (a reference to one of the meanings of the name that we found during the stream). No invulnerability but is super tough and has earned being known as a bit of a legend in his homeland. The homeland will be a theocratic military state. How far I go with that, I am uncertain so far.  “Jace”: A master of illusions and manipulation, is very rogue like and a bit of a huckster. Lives in a great hub city very similar to ravnica in form. “Liliana”: Because of her not going to be receiving the same level of redesign, this stage is going to swap her out for one of my own characters by the name of ‘Prisma’. Still, the land she lives in is going to be based on Innistrad. Small towns, superstition, ruins, and ancient keeps, one of which Prisma calls home. This area of the world will not be all that far from the hub city.
“Chandra”: One of the two leads of this endeavor, and the one that gets the most changes in the ‘stage 2′ point of this process. What you see in my previous remix posts is mostly what you are going to get style wise. Change of the color pallete at least though to be less ‘chandra’ and more whoever this new character emerging from all this will be. Both her parents are alive. Her mother will be a sort of ‘inventor mage/star gazer’. Planing to have something about the study of the stars being it’s own school of magic. She builds her obvervitory on a hill over a source of thermal energy to power her home and machines. ‘Chandra’s’ father will be one to take further advantage of that wealth of power by being a baker/cook. A humble job, true, but one that will fill him with joy as he helps feed those in the community. The land she hails from will be more Kaladesh in spirit then in form. Less loops, though I do plan on keeping that flavor of India.. which is going to be tricky. I want to keep that flavor, but without dipping into appropriation. So any help I can get will be most appreciated.
“Nissa”: The other of the main pair, but sadly the less fleshed out. What I am certain of is that she will be from an ancient land that has an old something sealed away (good, evil or other is uncertain at the moment). She will be wise but as introverted as Nissa, and just as strong phsycally. One of the differences is that she won’t commune with the land nearly as much as just being respectful of it. she will be able to shape plants and stone (even metal to some extent) and will be able to shape her walking staff into a bow. While she will carry a small quiver of arrows, most times she will just reach down and fashion an arrow straight out of the earth. I am also debating on her race. I have decided that making her an elf is a bit too on the nose and might lead me to just flat out keeping both characters too close to the origin that i started with. Currently I’m waffling between Orc, Mermaid (like Caldur from Young Justice or Kiora), or Selkie. Open to other suggestions. In fact that is the whole point of this post. Right now, this is the bulk of what I have thought of so far. Any help with names, or general plot/character ideas I’m open to. I will likely not use all, but even the ones I do not use will help guide me to the ones I do.
Hope you enjoyed this ramble. Sleepy times for me. XD
