Hey that Quake 2 Remaster is nice
I never loved Quake 2. I didn't have a truly gaming-capable PC until 2003 or 2004, and even then, "gaming capable" meant it could run the NOLF demo on the lowest settings. Then again, maybe Lithtech isn't the best measuring stick.
But it was on that old Sony Vaio that I finally started really playing PC games. And my first priority there was Half-Life, which I played absolutely to death and back. It wasn't until three or even four years later that I even remembered there was a Quake 2, and compared to Half-Life, it felt deeply antiquated.
It felt like a game trying to do everything Half-Life was doing, but still clinging to its roots as the progenitor of Doom's instant action. Those two flavors, at least as far as iD Software mixed them together, were more sour than sweet to me. Modern attempts at designing a living world and a robust story were unable to shake traditional first person shooter cobwebs.
A couple years ago, I think after watching Civvie's video on Quake 2, I made an effort to give the game a second shot through Q2Pro. Though my reception was warmer, I still did not come away feeling especially positive on the game. I'm the kind of guy who was already pretty harsh on Quake 1 for just being "More Doom" and Quake 2 is just More More Doom, but now with extra boring "what if Starship Troopers was about cybernetic horror instead of bugs" art direction.
This Quake 2 Remaster they just put out, though? I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying the game. Between the enhanced visuals, gameplay tweaks, and improved enemy AI, the game... doesn't feel brand new. It still feels like Quake 2. But it's like somebody went around and tightened all the loose bolts.
Doom 2016 weapon wheels make managing guns (and inventory power-ups!) a breeze. A brand new (and optional) compass makes sure you don't get lost in levels that could take upwards of 40 minutes to finish. Monsters are significantly more mobile and willing to chase you down. And new cutscenes between levels (and better UI during levels themselves) help fill out the struggling narrative a little bit more, putting greater focus on what it is you're doing.
It is, unquestionably, a better version of this game. I can't imagine ever going back to the original Quake 2 now.
Also, shoutouts to the fact that this is two for two that iD Software has said "If you own these games on Steam, you automatically get the remasters for free."

played through the big 3 monolith productions games; all the official blood episodes (+ marrow), no one lives forever, and FEAR over october, been meaning to play the latter two for a while now
Blood is as great as always, still the best build game and def one of the top shooters ever. still love it so much. marrow kicks ass too, was gonna play deathwish but i might wait for the 2.0 release of that
NOLF was one i was kind of being kept from playing because of the issues with it being abandonware and lithtech being a nightmare to get running on modern systems, but there was a site that had it up for free with patches to get it to run. ran basically perfect. love the personality and variety. a bit long and some questionable design choices but a fun time overall, i get why its got a following. Leaving NOLF 2 for another time because the length started to get to me towards the end
FEAR is another one id been putting off for a while after trying i on 360 (didnt click then). playing it on pc made a big difference. played through almost the whole thing in one day and finished it tonight. really REALLY simple gameplay but the they nail the vibes and presentation hard. the relative simplciity and somewhat minimalistic approach was a great change of pace after NOLF. the VK 12 really is as good as people talk it up to be
really have a much stronger appreciation for monolith productions after getting more into their games besides blood. all 3 of these games show some real variety in tone and gameplay style but are definitely high quality games. it does really frustrate me to know that after fear 2 (which i might play or atleast try. i havent heard much good but i wanna see some for myself) theyve basically been stuck making liscenced games. i hope some of that creativity for the fps genre, or really games in general can come back someday

I first learned about this years ago while playing No One Lives Forever 2. Two of the ninja women in the first chapter were talking about what time it was.
"A ninja can tell the time from the slits in a cats eye"
"What if you don't have a cat handy?"
"That's why I always carry dried fish."
"Wouldnt it be easier to wear a watch?"
I miss that game
Some dude: Hey bro you got the time?
Me: Yeah it’s fuckinuuuuuh [pulls a cat out of the inside of my jacket and looks it dead in the eyes] about 6pm

Wait - what is the reason we won’t see one for AVP2? As a long time Alien fan, I think AVP2 is *the* standout game of that series. Why obscure it?
Monolith Productions was bought by Warner Bros. WB 100% owns Monolith. TRON is owned by Disney, and both Aliens and Predators are owned by 21st Century Fox. (Though Fox is in the process of being acquired by Disney, so almost everything associated with Fox will soon be owned by Disney.)Since TRON, Aliens, and Predators were licensed properties from other competing studios, WB will not allow Monolith to promote those properties in any way. Even as anniversary celebration Twitch streams for those games. That’s my understanding of the situation.I’m almost surprised they did a stream about NOLF, since the character of Cate Archer is owned by Fox (still, apparently), Activision owns the rights to publishing the game (after they acquired Sierra), and Monolith only owns the rights to the games’ gameplay content.
The rights to NOLF are a mess, which is why there’s been no digital download release of the two games yet. (It’s the same for AvP 2, which is also why you can’t buy the game anywhere.)
At least with TRON 2.0, it looks like Disney wrote the contract with Monolith in such a way that Disney ended up pretty much owning the rights to it completely. Which is why you can now buy it once more, on Steam and GOG.
A bit of trivia: Monolith was already part-owned by Warner Bros. while they were working on TRON 2.0. Not long after completion, in 2004 Warner bought them entirely. Since the contract to create TRON 2.0 was in place between Disney and Monolith before Warner partially bought Monolith, the game remained safe from interference and was still completed.
This is also why you’ll probably never see another TRON or Aliens vs. Predators game made by Monolith.

Contract J.A.C.K.
Coming after the success of No One Lives Forever 2, Monolith developed a third game, which is more of a spinoff. Contract J.A.C.K (“Just Another Contract Killer”) is prequel is set in the time frame between the events of the original NOLF and NOLF2, and follows John Jack, a professional killer recruited by H.A.R.M to help sabotaging a rival criminal organization called “Danger! Danger!”. Despite being set in the same universe and trying to tie in with the story only two characters are returning: Dimitrij Volkov (the head of H.A.R.M) and Dr.Harij, a mad scientist encountered in the Indian levels in NOLF2.
