Sen. Menendez demands U.S. sanctions on Turkey and Azerbaijan, requests $100 million in assistance to Armenians

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a powerful call for renewed U.S. leadership in the face of Turkish and Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia and Artsakh, urging $100 million in U.S. assistance to prevent a humanitarian disaster, re-engagement in the OSCE Minsk Group negotiation process, and the end to U.S. arms sales to Ankara and Baku, reported the Armenian National Committee of America.

“Armenian Americans in New Jersey and across the U.S. applaud Senator Menendez’s leadership calling for a reset of U.S. policy toward the South Caucusus region, to aid the Armenians forced out of their homes due to Azerbaijani and Turkish attacks, to meaningfully re-engage in the OSCE Minsk Group peace process, and sanction Erdogan and Aliyev for their aggression,” said ANCA National Board member Ani Tchaghlasian, a New Jersey native. “We look forward to working with Congress and the Administration to enact Sen. Menendez’s common sense proposals to ensure the safety and security of Armenia and Artsakh.”

Speaking on the U.S. Senate floor, Senator Menendez shared his solidarity with Armenian worldwide, in the face of “the devastation inflicted on the region by Azerbaijani President Aliyev, with the full support of President Erdogan of Turkey,” and decried the lack of American leadership “which could have averted much of this tragedy.”

Menendez continued that “the security of the Armenian people, who have already suffered brutal violence at the hands of Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan, now rests with ‘peacekeepers’ sent by Vladimir Putin – a flawed agreement that does nothing about the jihadis sent there by Turkey, who if allowed to remain, could commit further atrocities against Christian Armenians.”

In response, Senator Menendez offered four key areas of renewed U.S. leadership including a call for $100 million in U.S. humanitarian and development assistance.

“Second, the United States must immediately suspend the provision of defense articles to Turkey and Azerbaijan. We cannot and must not enable any future atrocities by either of these authoritarian countries,” stated Senator Menendez, who called for passage of his measures – S.Res.754 and S.Res.755 – which would block arms sales to Erdogan and Aliyev based on their human rights records.

Third, Senator Menendez called for the end of the annual U.S. presidential waiver of Section 907 restrictions on U.S. aid to Azerbaijan, based on their continued aggression against Armenia and Artsakh.

Fourth, Turkey’s aggression, must be addressed, argued, Senator Menendez, who called for U.S. sanctions against Ankara. “President Erdogan clearly aspires to be a modern-day Ottoman sultan, putting down stakes in Libya, in Syria, across the Eastern Mediterranean, and now in the south Caucasus.”

Senator Menendez argued for broader U.S. leadership in the OSCE Minsk Group Artsakh peace negotiations. “Though the OSCE Minsk Group Process appears to be on life support, we can and must reinvigorate it with senior level engagement. We must send a clear message to Ankara, Baku, and Moscow that violence as a means to ‘solve’ the conflict will not succeed, and pressure on Armenia from its eastern and western borders will not be tolerated.”

Senator Menendez’s complete remarks are provided below.

I come to the floor today in solidarity with ethnic Armenians all over the world who have experienced terrible losses in recent weeks.

This is a tragic moment for Armenians everywhere.

Words cannot describe the devastation inflicted on the region by Azerbaijani President Aliyev, with the full support of President Erdogan of Turkey.

Thousands of ethnic Armenian civilians and soldiers have lost their lives due to Azerbaijan’s aggression, with an unknown number more injured. More than half of the population has been driven from their longtime homes. Every day, more are forced to leave.

Azerbaijan’s aggression has created a massive humanitarian crisis that will require a significant response, especially in light of the worsening pandemic.

The historically and religiously significant city of Shushi now sits in Azerbaijani hands, and the security of many sacred Christian sites falls to President Aliyev and his backer Erdogan. The world will be watching if these holy sites are desecrated.

These are dark days indeed – and it did not have to be this way. American leadership could have averted much of this tragedy. Unfortunately, after the conflict began in late September, the highest-ranking Trump administration officials decided to remain largely absent and silent.

Certainly, other world leaders engaged. President Macron made calls and actively pushed to reduce tensions, as one would expect from one of the leaders of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Minsk Group Co-Chair country.

Unfortunately, others with less noble goals were also at the table.

President Erdogan fueled Azerbaijan’s aggression, fanning the flames by providing devastating drone technology and Syrian mercenaries. President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov worked the phones from the early days of the conflict. The result? Russia has a new foothold in the south Caucasus. Evidently, Russia was never fully committed to the Minsk goals and now has what they wanted since the 1990’s.

All of this happened while Donald Trump slept, yet another example of diplomatic malpractice at the highest levels of an administration that will thankfully conclude in January.

But President Trump’s departure is little solace for the ethnic Armenians who have been driven from their homes and seen their livelihoods go up in flames.

So what is the region left with at the end of the day?

The security of the Armenian people, who have already suffered brutal violence at the hands of Presidents Aliyev and Erdogan, now rests with ‘peacekeepers’ sent by Vladimir Putin – a flawed agreement that does nothing about the jihadis sent there by Turkey, who if allowed to remain, could commit further atrocities against Christian Armenians.

Without any commitments to the status of Artsakh, there is no incentive for Azerbaijan to make peace with Armenia. Will we see another case of ethnic cleansing in the future? Do we sit silent?

Madam President, we now have a trio of authoritarians running the show in the south Caucasus. It should alarm anyone dedicated to a peaceful solution of this longstanding conflict. It should alarm anyone dedicated to democratic reform in the region. And it should alarm anyone concerned about basic human rights and respect for international law.

We in the United States should be concerned about national security issues that would affect us in the Caucasus. My colleagues, we are witnessing the return of great power politics in this critical region. And yet the world’s sole superpower is conspicuously absent. This needs to change.

First, and most urgently, the United States must lead a response to the humanitarian needs created by this violence, particularly for the tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians forcibly displaced from their homes by the six-week war.

Winter is fast approaching. The COVID-19 pandemic is raging. There is no time to waste. Congress and the Trump administration must act quickly to save these families.

The United States must make a substantial investment in humanitarian and development assistance along the lines of $100 million to make a difference for those on the ground.

This includes funding for efforts to demine the affected area.

In April, I sent a letter co-signed by 30 other Senators calling for the Senate to appropriate $1.5 million in FY21 funds for demining; robust funding for rehabilitation services in Nagorno-Karabakh; and money for an independent assessment of remaining mine contamination to help inform future efforts. Given the widespread use by Azerbaijan of cluster munitions, rockets, and other such weapons in this conflict, I again urge this body to include those provisions in the final appropriations bill.

Second, the United States must immediately suspend the provision of defense articles to Turkey and Azerbaijan. We cannot and must not enable any future atrocities by either of these authoritarian countries. Either we had a tremendous intelligence failure or the State Department lied when it issued the waiver to Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act.

Either way, we shoulder be gravely concerned about reports that Azerbaijan has utilized U.S.-origin defense equipment in this conflict.

The administration must fully investigate these reports and respond appropriately to any violations of U.S. law.

Indeed, Canada suspended arms sales to Turkey in response to the conflict for this very reason, and I applaud Prime Minister Trudeau for doing so.

The United States must do the same, and work diplomatically to encourage others to join us in common cause.

To that end, I have introduced two resolutions that will require the State Department to report on human rights abuses by Azerbaijan and Turkey, and on the role U.S. security assistance and arms transfers may be playing in those abuses. I urge my colleagues to support those resolutions.

Third, the administration must follow the law. It should not waive Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which states that Azerbaijan should ‘cease all blockades and other offensive uses of force’ against Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh as a condition to receive U.S. assistance.

The facts tell us that the Government of Azerbaijan has done the exact opposite. America has no business rewarding this kind of aggressive behavior. I call on the administration to terminate the waiver of Section 907. Congress can also address this injustice in the FY21 appropriations bill by stripping the existing waiver authority so that this security relationship stops. It needs to stop once and for all.

In addition, at my request, the Government Accountability Office is currently reviewing the impact of U.S. security assistance to Azerbaijan, which has skyrocketed under the Trump administration.

The Pentagon alone has provided more than $120 million in equipment to the Aliyev regime in recent years.

This is simply unacceptable and must change. The GAO review will shed light on the impact of the repeated waivers of Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act.

Fourth and finally, Turkey’s aggression in this conflict must be addressed. President Erdogan clearly aspires to be a modern-day Ottoman sultan, putting down stakes in Libya, in Syria, across the Eastern Mediterranean, and now in the south Caucasus.

Under Erdogan, Turkey has engaged in unbridled aggression outside of its borders, in violation of NATO’s founding principles and international norms.

Here’s what we know:

Turkey is proving to be an unreliable ally in NATO. It is not a democracy. And it is not a responsible actor on the world stage.

The aggression unfolding in Azerbaijan should make crystal clear what we have long known: Erdogan is, without a doubt, trying to claim the title of most destructive actor in the region today. Without a strong response, he will continue these advances and aggression. I urge the incoming Biden administration to stop him, and Congress has a role to play as well.

We must finally sanction Turkey for its purchase of the S400 from Russia, which is a clear violation of the CAATSA law. I expect that the FY21 NDAA will take this long overdue step and result in S400 sanctions on Turkey.

I would also urge the incoming Biden administration to reassert American leadership in the region. The United States must join with Europe in solidarity against Turkey’s violations of the sovereignty of Greece and Cyprus, which destabilize the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Sanctions against those conducting illegal exploration activities on behalf of Turkey would be a strong show of support for our European allies, not to mention for the rule of law.

Indeed, I have every confidence that President-elect Biden and his team will live up to America’s responsibilities on the world stage by actually engaging on all of these issues.

Though the OSCE Minsk Group Process appears to be on life support, we can and must reinvigorate it with senior level engagement. We must send a clear message to Ankara, Baku, and Moscow that violence as a means to ‘solve’ the conflict will not succeed, and pressure on Armenia from its eastern and western borders will not be tolerated.

I would like to close with this.

Above the road between Yerevan and Stepanakert lies the ancient monastery of Dadivank. Father Hovannes, a priest at the monastery, has vowed to stay, even though the area has fallen under Azerbaijani control. His neighbors have mostly fled, on their way to Yerevan, displaced by weeks of horrific fighting.

The courage of Father Hovannes is hard for most of us to understand, to even comprehend. It comes from a place of deep connection to the land, deep connection to one’s culture and deep connection to one’s faith. The world will be watching as to what happens to Father Hovannes and the ancient monastery of Dadivank.

A neighbor of Father Hovannes who also committed to stay in the area, said, ‘We are here to stay until the end. This is our God. It’s our church. Our cross bears a heavy weight. We are here to carry that weight.’

Throughout this war, Armenians across the region have carried that weight, under relentless assault from Azerbaijan and Turkey. The Trump administration let them down.

The horror of recent weeks will be very difficult to undo. But we must start the work. We must start the work.

By taking the steps that I have described here tonight, we can begin a new chapter of U.S. policy in the region, and right past wrongs. And I am committed, as I have always been alongside the Armenian-American community in New Jersey and across our country, to see this just work through to the end.

New Rules

At what point does decency morph into an aural assault invitation? And when is it then appropriate for said decency to mutate into disdain? And for God’s sake, can we all agree on a universal plan to manage/extinguish it? These are genuine public issues that, continuing as unidentified and unenforced conundrums, will inevitably breed a new kind of twisted and hostile version of an “acceptable” social milieu. For example, “How are you?” in no way requires a thoughtful response. A thoughtful response is a waste of time. It is regretful to the instigator, and plainly disrespectful. Rather, the acceptable answer to this inauthentically polite query is a perfunctory nod and “how ya doin?” At this point it is very important to break eye contact, drop your shoulder and keep it movin’. Because once we start pretending to care about the real answer, uncomfortable conversationalists will never stop. They’ll never learn the rules which aren’t legally, but ought to be, in place

I’m sure violations of these rules occur all the time, all over the country. Never more had it begun rearing its head, however, into horrifying existence, as it did when I moved to the South. Perhaps such transgressions exist in the North, but I had always been more preoccupied with my own assholery and social tip-toeing to notice. A conversation in New Jersey, wherein a two-word answer would suffice, a guy might grant you a grunt. In North Carolina though? That same two-word answer is stretched like taffy over a candy hook made from your brittle, dwindling patience. Much like taffy, their words are stretched and elongated, becoming thinner and less substantive with each pull, while cavities slowly and painfully form.

Apparently in North Carolina the invitation of “How ya doin” need not be signed, sealed, and delivered. No, no, no. In the balmy October of the South, just existing in a space warrants no-knock access to your attention and headspace. Let us set the scene…

I sat for too long in a doctor’s waiting room, reading. On the other side of the room, at my nine-o’clock, a 65-year old white woman with silver fly-aways made herself known by a diet coke can full of factors. From my seat I heard her gargling coughs. They were deep and wet in a way a girl can appreciate, and undoubtedly caused by her smoking at least a carton of Parliaments a day. She sported nose tubes that seemed to connect to nothing, and initially hobbled through the threshold with a cane and a silent struggle. A metaphorical silence of course, as the coughing was perpetual from the start.

Sitting to my right, comfortably in my periphery, was an able-bodied white man in apparent health. He was about the age of the female smoker but the two could not have been more different. Let’s call him Craig and her Joanne-- Jo, if you will. When Craig entered the building he walked right over to the receptionist’s window. He presented his paperwork and the woman in scrubs, Rhonda, for our purposes, went to work on her computer. Now, apologies to any HIPPA enforcement agents out there, but the window of glass does nothing to prevent the rest of the waiting room from eavesdropping. The furthest chair is fifteen feet away and other than a TV with looped new clips of “how to incorporate greens into your diet” and “a patient with diabetes dies every seven seconds” there was no obstruction of sound.

The free air space proved so much more frustrating than informative, and this is why we need rules. I didn’t hear about this guy’s weird growth or incontinence or shitty blood pressure. I learned, instead, that he is a perpetrator of multiple social-felonies and should be put away from the public forever. After Rhonda the receptionist’s “thank you,” he stayed put at the window to engage in assault. Yes, I know the climate and yes, I am selecting my incendiary verbiage with care. This. Was. Assault.

“When’s this mask thing gonna let up, huh? It’s eighty-six degrees and I gotta wear it while I work outside!” Craig didn’t care about masks then and he doesn’t care about the masks now. Or maybe he does, but that isn’t why he was talking about it. He was just filling air; stuffing to the seams miniscule pillows of conversation to ease his own discomfort at what was once just innocent silence, a polite absence of sound. I know this because at Rhonda’s lack of intrigue, he continued, “My mamma is out in the country. She doesn’t understand new food, so I go out there to eat with her when she’s lonely.”

Oh Craig, I thought. Does he go to help her understand the new food? Is the new food the cause of her loneliness? Does she miss her old food? And what new food are we talking here? Was Craig’s mother just woken from a vampiric slumber and now summons assistance with Lean Cuisine? WHAT IS THE NEW FOOD, CRAIG? I had so many questions. I never did find out though, because at Rhonda’s radio-silence, he awkwardly forged ahead with more relevant small talk. Opening his wallet for his copay he suggested that he “ought to be getting a flu shot this season, right?” I’m not sure Rhonda recognized his rhetorical tone, because she finally caught interest enough to respond, “Oh, would you like your flu shot? We can do that during today’s appointment!” “No, no,” Craig explained, “I don’t want my arm to hurt.” With a meek “...okay…” from Rhonda, Craig lumbered away and lowered himself into a chair at my two-thirty. He kept his eyes forward and nose, for the most part, in his own business.

Meanwhile, Joanne over there was hacking up a storm. A tornado, to be exact; one that transported her out of Kansas, to a self-sustainable yellow brick road of mucous. Our old girl Jo was on and off the phone, talking and laughing to herself, but politely contained all the contents of her brain deep inside, with an airtight cap and a six-digit combination lock. Her sinus molecules may have been spewed but her thoughts were not, and I appreciated this about her.

I learned by her last phone call that Jo wasn’t from around here. One could easily hear that she didn’t speak with any sort of accent, though that isn’t uncommon for the less redneck natives. Juxtaposed with Craig’s mumbling drawl, her language was crystal clear and frank as fuck. Jo offered a job to the stranger on the other end of the phone, and was as transparent as you’d expect from a Northerner, “Don’t you dare accept unless you’re serious, this has fallen through four times before and I won’t be made a fool of.” I was given no inkling as to what the job entailed, as Jo possessed no performative bone on her body. If Craig was in her position, he’d have turned to tell me about how his stubborn mother needs to accept this part-time job offer at Panera, in order to immerse herself in twenty-first century food and culture, being a vampire and all.

Jo then started breaking down the commute from the Path in JC over to Liberty State Park, or the WTC, “or one of those, who remembers?” Recognizing the NY/NJ transit-ese, my eyes lit up. Suddenly Jo’s coughing bothered me less, her loud phone call became endearing, and I stopped wondering where those damn nose tubes were leading. Because now she was from the North. One of us, I thought. I marveled as she caned her way to Rhonda’s window, not for small talk, but to sanitize her hands and empty an entire tree-limb’s worth of tissues from the soon-to-be-empty box. The threat to the environment worried me not, for Jo is a New Yorker (or better yet, from Jersey), and I’m sure she knows what she’s doing.

The army of tissues, it turned out, was not for her tube-occupied nostrils. I never saw the spider, but heard the thump thump thump of her trying to murder it. With her cane. It was quite a jarring sight, actually. “Now that is a big spider,” Jo remarked aloud, but privately. With this new information I smiled and chuckled to myself. Something about the sight of an aging Northern woman with a cane and oxygen attempting to annihilate this creature in a doctor’s waiting room. Craig would have let us know about the presence of the spider and then stomped on it in some barbaric execution of manners-meets-masculinity.

As I turned my head, eyes bright and lips curled beneath my mask, Craig’s gaze briefly latched onto mine. Audibly sighing and shaking his head, Craig gestured as if we were in this together. “Can you believe this woman,” his eyes suggested. Dude, you don’t even know, I thought, I am SO on her side. I turned my attention back to my book. Though both born during Eisenhower, Jo conducted her morning according to how she felt, reacting to what happened around her. I believe Craig would have had the same morning, regardless of events, acting instead of reacting. Walk in, make small talk, be polite, mention mama, eyes front, don’t bother anyone. Ironically, Craig’s version of manners is contingent on the mindless suffering of others. We need not assault the aural orifice of others to avoid awkwardness of our own silent suffering.

So we need rules. Like most legislation, the states can decide for themselves where to draw the line and what the punishment should be. I don’t think the death penalty would be appropriate for a minor transgression, but then, we are in the South. If marijuana possession, which you keep to yourself, warrants 45 days in prison and a one thousand dollar fine, then what’s a short stint with a court-mandated muzzle? Craig is not a bad guy, he just can’t read a room. Until all the legal kinks are worked out I hope his next doctor’s appointment is full of other selfishly polite Southerners with whom he can share tales of ma in the country. And I hope Jo moves back up North, takes me with her, offers me that mystery job, and I’ll never let her down.

WINCHENDON — Guest presenter, author, and visiting teacher Michael Strickland came to The Winchendon School for the celebration of Martin Luther King Day with a primary objective— to carry the message of Dr. King. Professor Michael Strickland teaches literacy education at Boise State University. The author of ten books for adults and children, he travels nationally speaking about learning, teaching, diversity and child advocacy.

Mr. Strickland presented at the School’s Global Dynamics classes on Monday, January 21, which included reading excerpts from King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, the story of Rosa Parks, whom the U.S. Congress called “the first lady of civil rights” and most famously known for her refusal to give up her seat in the colored section of the bus to a white passenger, and sharing personal stories of his childhood in South Orange, NJ.

Michael was born and raised by his devoted parents who were successful in their own right. His father was a lawyer, mother was an educator, and it was not uncommon for their family to entertain prominent people in their home, including Rosa Parks. Mr. Strickland shares the story of his mother, Dorothy, a highly-educated woman, a Samuel DeWitt Proctor Professor of Education at Rutgers, former classroom teacher and learning disabilities specialist, and author and editor of numerous publications concerning language development and reading. She was also an Advisor to each President of the United States who held office since Gerald Ford to our current President Obama. On frequent occasions, Michael would visit his mother at her office and recounts the times he witnessed the visitors who shook the white woman’s hand in the office instead of his mother’s hand, assuming that a woman of color could not hold such a high position. On that note, Mr. Strickland told students to “avoid stereotypes and jumping to conclusions.”

When Olivia Hoffman ’15 asked his opinion about what Martin Luther King, Jr. would think about how far we’ve come today, he responded that “he [King, Jr.] would be delighted by the fact that we have a black President of the United States, as well as many men and women of color in CEO positions other than professional sports, and on television; however, there would be some sadness as well that there is still a huge gap between the rich and the poor. He went on to say that the poverty amongst blacks in such areas as Newark, NJ is higher now than the pre-Civil Rights Act in 1964.

He went on to encourage the young men and women to read literature, which lets you connect with your emotions, write, discuss issues, and get involved. He concluded his presentation with “I have a dream that a black President will just be known as the President.”

As an award winning author, Mr. Strickland’s books include, A-Z of African American History, Families: Poems Celebrating the African American Experience, and African American Writers: A Dictionary – dedicated to Brooke Tevlin, Director of College Counseling & Patrick Tevlin, Director of Development at The Winchendon School. In his 22 years as a teacher, Mr. Strickland has taught study skills for writing and reading, and studying skills. He has taught on all levels, including computer literacy and computer aided instruction, secondary language arts and content area reading.

Mr. Strickland’s teaching, research and consultant work has taken him to 35 states and 4 countries. He has had the privilege of working with teens, young adults, students, teachers and administrators in a variety of different settings. Most notably are his extensive efforts with staff/teacher development in the urban Abbott Districts of New Jersey, and his counsel to Harcourt Brace, Scholastic, Sadlier, and Boyds Mills Press.

His hope in the future is to continue to invest into this and the next generation of emerging leaders and mobilize them to make a difference.

Christine Alba (@thehappilyeverafter): I started my instagram account nearly six years ago so that I could have a place to document my days with iPhone photos of people, places and things that I love, including playful flatlays of food and objects from nature. I think with patience and careful attention, we can find beauty in simple, ordinary subjects, and I try to capture and share such beautiful simplicity in my photos. I take pride in being able to say that even after all these years, 99.9% the photos I post to instagram are taken and edited on my iPhone.

Kayleigh Ann Archbold (@herheartlaughs) is the owner of Laughing Heart Photography. She was raised in Hewitt, New Jersey but has called Montclair home for the past six years. Maybe we will just let everyone else keep thinking it's "dirty" here - and the beauty can be our little secret.

Here is our evaluation of some of the betting favorites this week, and the reasons they will or won’t win the season’s fourth and final major championship.

Rory McIlroy +800

First round tee time: 5:09 a.m.

There will be a lot of pressure on McIlroy at Royal Portrush, but there’s plenty of reasons to like him. He notably shot a course record 61 there as a 16-year-old and has the built-in advantage of familiarity with a course that’s a relative unknown to several of the top threats this weekend. In terms of his recent game, McIlroy is third on the PGA Tour in course and field adjusted driving distance over the last six weeks at 321 yards, and he’s sixth average adjusted strokes per round at 67.3. He’s got the narrative, the game, and the comfort level all on his side.

Brooks Koepka +1100

First round tee time: 8:04 a.m.

In addition to currently being the World’s top-ranked player, Koepka enters this tournament with a secret weapon. He’s got caddie Ricky Elliott trailing him, key because he is a Royal Portrush member and has intimately familiarity with the course which should help Koepka navigate its nuances as the weekend progresses. Plus, Koepka should be well rested:

Koepka clearly comes from the school of Allen Iverson.

Jon Rahm +1400

First round tee time: 10:21 a.m.

Rahm dazzled with a final round 62 to win the Irish Open two weeks ago, and, as a result, he’s climbed up the board of Open favorites leading up to the tournament. Rahm is noted as an outstanding links player whose proven that he can have success in a similar climate that he will see this weekend. With a 67.3 average adjusted strokes per round, Rahm has an identical number over the last six weeks to Rory McIlroy. He figures to be very much in contention to win this thing.

Dustin Johnson +1600

First round tee time: 9:59 a.m.

You never know what you’re going to get with Johnson. He is the world’s No. 2 ranked golfer, but only comes into this tournament with one major win to his credit – the 2016 U.S. Open. He’s been close two adding to his resume in recent majors, finishing second at both at Augusta and Bethpage. At +1850 odds, he’s not a bad bet to finally break through.

Tiger Woods +2000

First round tee time: 10:10 a.m.

Tiger hasn’t played in over a month since he played in mid-June at the U.S. Open. Apparently, he was looking to a fellow competitor for get a tune up earlier this week. He didn’t get much help:

Ouch. No respect for a legend.

In all seriousness, Woods took a break ahead of playing at Bethpage where he didn’t last through Friday. His ability to shake off the rust will be key to his success as will his ability to stay healthy. Weather is expected to be damp and chilly for most of the weekend, which isn’t an ideal climate for someone battling back issues.

As for his game, he’s shown increased driver accuracy lately at both The Memorial and US Open, hitting fairways on 73.2 percent of his drives. That’s an encouraging development.

Justin Rose +2200

First round tee time: 9:48 a.m.

Rose is currently ranked No. 4 in the world, but there’s a recent trend that raises a white flag. HIs 54.2% greens in regulation is significantly below that of the other favorites. Still, his 26 course and field adjusted puts per round has been outstanding and eliminates some of those driver and iron inconsistencies.

Patrick Cantlay +2500

First round tee time: 10:21 a.m.

Many experts believe that Cantlay is poised for big weekend on the big stage. There’s a lot to like. He’s got a good driver and an elite average adjusted strokes per round over both recent and year-plus sample sizes. His consistency makes him a threat to factor throughout the course of the weekend. In fact, he’s a good Top 10 finisher pick.

Adam Scott +2500

First round tee time: 4:58 a.m.

Scott is having an under-the-radar fantastic season despite the lack of a major victory. He comes into Royal Portrush with the third best average adjusted strokes per round over the last six weeks at 66.8, and he should be quite comfortable when he tees off on Thursday morning. He arrived in Northern Ireland a week prior to the event and played three practice rounds with 2011 Open Winner Darren Clarke. That familiarity could loom large against much of a field that lacks experience on this course.

Henrik Stenson +2500

First round tee time: 4:14 a.m.

Here’s what we know about Henrik Stenson. He’s going to efficiently make greens. He has been elite Top 10 performer in both long term and recent samples with hitting greens in regulation.

Xander Schaufele +2800

First round tee time: 4:14 a.m.

Undoubtedly, there’s decent value here for a guy who has finished in the Top 5 of his 10 major tournaments four times. The 25-year-old has shown ability to acquit himself well on the big stage. Can he finally finish the job? He enters with an elite 27 course and field adjusted putts per round.

Bryson DeChambeau +4000

First round tee time: 4:58 a.m.

If you’re looking for a wild card that possesses the physical tools, then DeChambeau is worth a flier at that this price. He’s currently the world’s No. 6 ranked golfer, but is 15th in terms of top betting favorites at SugarHouse. He was the runner up at the 3M Open, and, man, he finished strong.

But it wasn’t to be as Matthew Wolff drilled a 21-foot eagle put win it.

DeChambeau’s long term and recent adjusted round scores are well above average. The concern with DeChambeau is that his ball can up in the air off the tee and that could be potentially problematic on the coast of Northern Ireland. If he can reign in the natural elevation off the tee, he’s got a chance.

2019 British Open Prediction

I know I’m not exactly going out on a limb here, but give me McIlroy. He just makes too much sense. Fourteen years after memorably shooting a 61 as a 16-year-old at Royal Portrush, McIlroy will return to earn his fifth major championship.
