"tumhen pyaar se pyaar hone lagega, mere sath shaamein beeta kar toh dekho"
It's easy to fall for me when love feels like a sunset, but spend your evenings with me and you'll discover what forever truly means.

Hiii, are u a Qawwali girlie? Do you vibe to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? What do u think/know of qawwali as a genre in South Asian music? ^_^
yea girl today i woke up to my dad singing his qawwali of the week i was raised on them loool. but from a technical perspective i don’t know much, ghazals and qawwalis fall under the same genre in my head. love abida parveen, nahid akhtar, munni begum, noor jahan, ghulam ali, jagjit and chitra singh… i’ve even listened to faiz ahmed faiz recitations on long car rides

Thinking about all the NFAK songs built around the act of looking at the lover. How there is an exploration of the manner in which the sight of the lover engages with the beloved. The sight being the first sense that interacts with the beloved, and what that means to the lover. How sight lets you build what you want to make of your beloved without touching them. Akin to how one might interact with god because one can't touch god.
"Kiven Mukhre ton Nazra Hatawan" being an ode to how you can't take your eyes off the one you love because you see god there. "Je tu akhiyan de saamne ni rehna" being this sulky, pouty demand you make to your love to return your heart if they are not going to be there in your sight always. "Akhiyan Udeek diyan" a reminder to your love that your eyes are waiting for their arrival, to get a glimpse of you. "Chaap tilak sab cheen" being about how the lovers world collapsed when their eyes met their beloved's. "Ye Jo halka halka suroor" literally telling the beloved that its their gaze that is responsible for this constant state of inebriation that the lover finds themselves in. A love so intense, so potent, that even when the least invasive sense is exposed to it, it's enough to capture a whole gamut of human emotions.

This is a trap remix. Not the original "trap" per se but a literal trap.
To be a trap, you must know the original. This one will tease you but won't satisfy you like the original.
In my head cannon, there are 4 versions of "tere bina". This is my list of them according to superiority.
4. From the movie "Kacche dhaage". It has different lyrics and sukhwinder singh is singing. NFAK saheb is the music director. Most diluted one.
3. This one, the song which made me write this.
2. The original recording of NFAK saheb "tere bin", during it's live session. A must listen, but not the strongest one. A 7+ minute feast of prowess of NFAK saheb and his qawwali party. Come back to bask in this one's glory if you have heard the first one in this list
1. The original meanders a lot of places. But this one doesn't.
Partners in Rhyme's Remix of "Tere bina" is the definitive one. "Tere bina" is about someone who lost his/her love and can't move on. They keep their love alive by revisiting the memory of their time together. "Kachhe dhaage" shows a short glimpse of the story, partition, but doesn't convey it's gonna be permanent. "Longing" doesn't convey anything, but it has NFAK saheb's voice.
Watch the music video. I can totally imagine NFAK saheb influencing the creative process.
The lover is dead, but as the song plays, you can be with him/her again.
"Meri sanson se bahal na jana.
Meri zindagi mujhe kab ka chhod gayi."

Indian singers adapted Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Qawwalis in their songs
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a Sufi qawwal, was an exceptionally talented musician. He produced some of the most memorable tunes when he was still alive. His songs and qawwalis have still remembered, sung, re-sung, and altered 24 years after his death. This is a reality that cannot be disputed.
There have two Indian adaptations of NFAK songs. “Akhiyan Udeek Diyan” a song from the upcoming film ‘Shiddat’ has granted credit by the composers. It’s important to note that ethical practises had adhered to. As a result, NFAK has given credit for being the original composer of the hypnotic piece.
youtube
Moreover, Neha Kakkar and Farhan Sabri adapted “Dulhe Ka Sehra” and “Bol Kaffara” by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and gave credit where credit was due.
youtube
NFAK’s qawwalis and songs have appeared in Bollywood adaptations and rip-offs over the years notable examples including the famous “Mera Piya Ghar Aya” and “Kinna Sona Teno Rab Ne Banaya“.
As long as credit has provided, it’s always nice to see sectors appreciate. They create a bigger audience for other industries’ work.

8 & 19, spotify asks!!!!!!!!!!!!
8. longest song
this is where the Spotify injustice and AI fuckery comes into play bc if they had done their job properly it would be a NFAK performance sitting in this spot. like idk the half an hour long version of Sanson Ki Mala or the twenty-seven minute Kehna Ghalat Ghalat or the sixteen and a half glorious minutes of Tumse Dillagi Bhool. since they fucked up the next longest is this one, Táim Sínte ar do Thuama. if you've ever heard I Am Stretched on Your Grave (either the Sinéad O'Conner [God's mercy be upon her, rip] or Kate Rusby versions) then this is the version taken directly from the original Gaelige poem, entirely orchestral. upside is that you can listen for hours and not get tired. downside is that once you know the lyrics when you zone out and come back in you are instantly prone to fits of emotional distress and full on breakdowns. (on that note maybe i should have put this one as the saddest song when i was asked, alas)
19. is the most streamed song by your favorite artist your favorite of them?
going to scandalize some of you but no. despite what the data might be telling you about the time we spent together FAYH is not my favorite. it is my third favorite, however, bc A Thousand Years/Desert Rose come in to tie for second. what's actually on top is Mad About You off of The Soul Cages, which by extension means the entire fucking album is probably the one thing from him i'd take to a remote and uninhabited island if forced. (don't force me. pls.) think it was the first Sting song i ever added to a playlist (or maybe it was the second. DR's been hanging around in my library since i joined Spotify i need to check) and i have not been normal since. heard the ancient songs of sadness but every step i thought of you every footstep only you no victories in all our histories without love you're fucking up my life and i'm letting you etc etc this is what happens when you let an English teacher decide to write about David and Bathsheba on an album about grief over his father's death. you get this
(send me a number from this Spotify Wrapped ask game!)
