Plutarch (fragment 178) compares the experience of the soul at death to mystic initiation: he describes various agitated experiences (much like those of Pentheus) that are transformed into bliss by the appearance of a wonderful light in the darkness. This passage shows that the Greeks were aware of the similarity between mystic initiation and near-death experiences. Extensive research into near-death experiences over the last thirty years has revealed a core of such experiences that is found in very different cultures. A frequent element in this core is the ‘being of light’, a wonderful light that transforms anxiety into bliss and is also somehow a person. The person’s identity differs according to the culture: for a Christian, for instance, the person may acquire the identity of Jesus. The light described by Plutarch is not a person, but in our passage of Bacchae it is twice identified with Dionysos.

Curious what you think about NDE's? The whole law of assumption/neville postings on Tumblr/reddit don't sit well with me 100%, but many NDE survivors have talked about learning about the importance of thoughts/beliefs when it comes to outcomes in life. It's what makes me think that there is SOME truth to the teachings, but there is a large chunk of it that is inaccurate.
NDEs are sure a thing that happens to people, and there's no doubt that they are often incredibly profound. That's definitely a thing you'll notice when examining folks' NDE stories.
That said, once you start examining the specific details and start comparing experiences against each other, it quickly becomes clear that the experiences are rooted in values and ideas familiar to them. Like it's not uncommon to hear modern Christians describe Heaven with Greco-Roman architecture - an unconscious cultural bias we have due to European depictions of Heaven. You almost certainly won't hear about fire in Heaven, despite that being mentioned in a number of ancient sources. And when they meet Jesus, Jesus inevitably says something that jives with their personal comprehension of Christianity.
And then once you get into NDEs outside of Christianity, things get even more diverse; and basically, the only thing you can really conclude here is that NDEs happen, and they relate to people's cultural expectations. Like, they definitely defy what we've typically expected the brain to be capable of in the past, but that doesn't necessarily imply an afterlife or the indestructibility of the soul - it could just mean that we've underestimated the brain.

It's difficult to sustain doubt in your own consciousness once you've had a near-death experience and observed yourself from the ER ceiling as your body lies on a gurney, your EEG flatlined, and the code blue team struggles to revive you.
In a flash of clarity, all of these CogSci arguments are suddenly laid bare as pilpul. Despite having no brain activity, you are still aware of what is happening - as a matter of fact, you are more sharply aware than you've ever experienced before in your life. And after you have been revived you can remember the experience, despite the fact that your brain wasn't working during the NDE.
There are literally thousands of case studies documenting the NDE phenomenon. It is a medical fact that these patients were not capable of brain activity, so as such NDEs constitute an edge case that must be accounted for in any model of hard consciousness.
In science, all models are wrong. Some models are useful.
That bears repeating.
I have a certain amount of admiration for cognitive scientists who are prepared to cut the Gordian knot of defining what a mind is and simply deny the validity of their own subjective experience. I mean, obviously someone who looks you in the eye and says "I'm not actually conscious, I just behave as though I am" is full of shit, but you've gotta respect the audacity.

Let's discuss: The Void

One thing I love, love about discovering the shifting community is seeing the appearance of topics that exist in other spiritual discussions. This is so affirming to me about the reality of it al!!
So let's talk about the Void.
I had my most vivid personal experience with this space during an astral travel. It was completely dark, pitch black, but not at all scary. Like being covered in a warm, safe blanket, surrounded by a feeling of pure love. My experience there is dear to me, and deeply personal, so that's all I'll say.
But why is this important to you, dear reader? Well, a few years after the above experience, I became really interested in learning about Near Death Experiences (NDE). If you're interested in reality shifting but don't know much about NDEs, I would recommend checking it out!
A common reoccurrence for people who come back with vivid NDE stories is the experience of the Void. I was absolutely struck (one might even say bamboozled) by some of the descriptions: a pitch black infinite expanse, a space filled with love, a waypoint between our known reality and what lies Beyond. You may have heard about the light at the end of the tunnel when we die? The Void is the Tunnel. Again, I cannot overstate how affirming this was to me to learn about.
Now we get to reality shifting where I find, again to my amazement, a reappearing of the Void. Hello old friend, fancy seeing you here. Hearing that people are using this place as a waypoint only further cements what the NDE community has been speculating about the Void for a long time. It seems to be place beyond our CR, a space between spaces, a launching point, a waiting room, a place of infinte possibility and unimaginable potential.
For a bit of personal opinion: this is one reason why I feel strongly that all the different spiritual communities should be reaching across the isle and talking. The shifting community seems to know a lot about, for example, astral projection and NDEs, but in all my years being a part of those other communities, I never heard shifting discussed. Learning that the Void is a big deal here as well opened my eyes.
Anyways, if you're unfamiliar with NDEs, the science being discussed about it, and the most common reoccurring themes across time and cultures, I would recommend starting with:
-Life After Life by Raymond Moody, PH.D., M.D.
A truly foundational work by a world-renowned researcher and scholar that opened up many spiritual experiences to serious discussion in academic spaces. He discusses the Void in detail.
-Surviving Death by Leslie Kean
Another excellent piece if you need to read some affirming stories. Leslie Kean is an investigative reporter who talks to a lot of very smart people for her books. Here she investigates the existence of the afterlife in particular, but also mediumship and ghosts.
-I also recommend any number of stories or channels on youtube just to hear what people have experienced. It will blow you away and help cure any creeping doubts! But beware of channels that only push Western culture or religious ideals. NDE experiences, while having a surprising number of reoccurring elements, are universal and do not support any one religious or spiritual ideology as The One True Way.

In this episode of The Catholic Bookworm, Scott L. Smith on his book Near-Death Experiences (February 25, 2025) Near-death experiences (NDEs) are endlessly fascinating for those who long for Heaven or are just curious about the things we cannot see (yet). Lost in all the discussion of NDEs, however, is their long, rich history. Saints and mystics have been visiting Heaven for thousands of years, and here, for the first time, Scott L. Smith provides you with a glimpse of what they’ve been seeing these past two millennia. In these heart-pounding pages, you will first learn about the ancient origin of NDEs and seven characteristics that describe them. Then, through studies of present-day cardiac and comatose patients, you will see what modern medical research says about NDEs. (You will be surprised!) You will see remarkable similarities between the NDE stories of biblical figures, such as Jonah, St. Paul, and St. John the Evangelist, and those of more modern individuals, such as Thérèse of Lisieux, Faustina Kowalska, and Padre Pio. Smith shares an array of God’s merciful messages from the great beyond through people’s visits to Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, documenting current-day stories, including:
The NDEs of Fr. Cedric Pesigna, including one while watching a Boston Red Sox game
Author Kevin Wells’s story of Heaven’s victory over his certain death and spiritual oppression
Sondra Abrahams’s NDE, which drove home the importance of reforming our lives and praying for the dead — even if we think they are without hope or definitely in Heaven
The NDE of Fr. Stephen Scheier, who glimpsed Hell because of the casual way he treated the sacrament of Confession — and his transformative encounter with Our Lady
You will learn of how St. Teresa of Ávila returned to life after being dead for four days and the details of her stunning visits to Heaven and Hell. You will also be treated to the NDE account of Pope St. Gregory the Great and the incredible NDE of one of St. Padre Pio’s priestly spiritual sons, while in battle, and how Padre Pio accompanied him. Smith reveals why some souls remain in Purgatory for decades — and how others choose Hell. But throughout, you will be consoled by stories of God’s limitless mercy, which never ceases calling us to repentance and inviting us to share in the glories of His heavenly kingdom. Spiritual Experiences and Mystical Experiences of Heaven, OOBEs & NDEs, and the Rule About Not Sharing One's Inner Experiences in Sant Mat - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast

Today... explaining the rule in Sant Mat about not sharing one's own personal inner experiences with others - why is that? It's all about keeping experiences private, authentic, free from ego and free from outside contamination or mental phantasmagoria, also free of pressures and expectations about what one "should" be experiencing. Everyone is at their own unique level or place in Inner Space. We need only to focus on our own inward journey, stay in touch with That, and keep it real, keep it 100!

Seek To See God Now - Liberation During This Life - Mystic-Poem of Sant Tulsi Sahib
"In this life, the concept of salvation all describe;
To meet the Lord by dying while living [meditation], none discloses.
They all speak of the goal of salvation after death;
How to attain it while living, no one says.
Were they to reveal the method of achieving release while living,
Then alone would Tulsi be convinced of their words.
Who speaks, after seeing with their own eyes,
and teach the method of salvation during life,
They are of the stage and stature of Saints,
for they reveal the quintessence of the soul."
The Expanse Above, from Saint Isaac the Syrian's Spiritual Works, Translated by Mary Hansbury:
"By stillness of the body and ceasing from this world, solitaries imagine the true stillness and the withdrawal from nature which will occur at the end of the corporeal world. By means of the mind, the solitaries are united with the world of the Spirit. By means of meditation, they are involved in the expanse above."
Awaken to the Resplendent Light Within You - Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, Mystic Verses from the Book of Shabdavali:
"Listen, O swan-soul, ascend to your true abode.
So says the Master again and again.
You do not pay attention to his words;
O finish your sorrows and joys and transmigrations.
If the deluded soul were to unite with her Source,
Never again would she be encumbered by body and mind.
From the Source of the Divine Ocean opens a Portal to the Light;
O awaken that resplendent Light within you."

NDEs are funny because I do disbelieve the majority (as in, all of them) because Agendas(TM) however there is one person that had me really intrigued and is hard to disbelieve for many reasons🤔 ultimately no one can know for sure but it soothes me a bit since it's my only "proof" that we have a soul. But anyway besides that Christians especially love to prey on others' fear of death to enroll them in through NDEs which fucking infuriates me.
Yuuuuuuup. And the lady who claimed that Jesus sent her back to Earth to fight Roe vs. Wade is gonna haunt my days forever.
