Replaying TRT for the 9000th time, having lived now in several places with radiators, I can't help but laugh at the assumption that the radiator is broken because of a little hissing and clanging. No, Nancy, that's just what radiators sound like.
Also, Dexter, my guy, what on earth is a little oil can going to do about a noisy radiator. It's hot water in pipes, not the tin man...
Limestone jewel: A new colourful karst-dwelling pitviper (Serpentes: Viperidae: Trimeresurus) from the poorly explored borderlands of southern peninsular Thailand

Abstract
We describe a new species of pitvipers from Trang Province of Thailand, near the Thailand–Malaysian border, based on morphological and molecular (2427 bp from cyt b, ND4, and 16S rRNA mitochondrial DNA genes) lines of evidence...
The new species is currently known from a small karstic area in the Nakawan Range spanning the border of Thailand and Malaysia, in particular in limestone forests in Trang and Satun provinces (Thailand); it likely also occurs in the adjacent parts of Perlis State (Malaysia).
Our study also suggests that the taxonomy of T. kanburiensis species complex requires further studies; in particular our study suggests that the status of populations from Chumphon Province of Thailand and Pulau Langkawi Island of Malaysia should be re-assessed.

The newest Rose Anvil/Nicks collab boot launched today. I was so tempted last year by the ND3, but this year's ND4 is... uh. Not to my taste.
It's supposed to be a take on the Vietnam war era military Jungle Boot, which had a mostly waxed canvas upper to make them more breathable and lighter weight. Here they've replaced that with just a softer but still very thick green leather, so I think its mostly just an aesthetic choice (but to me it's aesthetically very hideous). Also the original jungle boot had drainage holes sort of like Chuck Taylors because the army basically gave up on trying to keep boots dry in the jungle and instead opted to give them boots that would dry out faster when they inevitably did get sweaty and/or wet. These dont have that (which tbh makes sense because most people will not be wearing these in the jungle but also why make a jungle boot at all in that case?) Also the original jungle boot treads were much thicker/further apart to try to prevent mud from getting stuck between them and here its just a normal lug pattern.
Basically the only thing that makes these "jungle boots" is the black and green color scheme.
Man. These are just so upsetting to me 😂 I am a sucker for a lineman patch but it just feels like all the angles on this thing are fighting with each other. Plus a 10" boot is just not practical for most use cases.
I don't know man. This is just a total miss for me.
Legal's mate is an opening trap that can occur in the following position:
From here white plays 1.Nxe5. At first glance this loses a queen.
But after 1...Bxd1
white can play 2.Bxf7+ Ke7 3.Nd4#.
Notice how the three pieces control all of the squares around the king.
However, the original sacrifice isn't sound. Black has 1...Nxe5 and since this defends their bishop from the queen black is just up a piece.
But if you're playing a casual game against a friend it's always worth seeing if they know about this trap. If only for the look of surprise when you checkmate them.
This is also a useful checkmate pattern to know, and it can arise in positions where one player isn't technically blundering a piece.
That's the opening checkmates covered. Now it's time to move onto tactics.

An unusual #ShittyCameraChallenge sunrise with the Sony Mavica MVC-FD51, 07 December 2022
I’ve been using the ‘high specification’ Sony Mavica MVC-FD81 for much of the #1990sCameraChallenge, but I thought it might be nice to see a sunrise through its more basic sibling, the MVC-FD51.
Like before, I held an ND filter over the lens to take off the glare of the rising sun. This time, though, instead of the fixed ND4 filter I used my variable ND filter ramped up to near maximum as the…

Five new species of the Pelodryadid genus Litoria from the southern versant of Papua New Guinea’s Central Cordillera, with observations on the diversification of reproductive strategies in Melanesian treefrogs
Stephen J Richards, Stephen C. Donnellan, Paul M. Oliver
ABSTRACT
New Guinea has the most diverse insular frog fauna in the world, and rates of species discovery and description have increased rapidly in the last two decades. Pelodryadid treefrogs are the second most diverse family of anurans on the island but their taxonomy, relationships, and especially ecology remain poorly documented.
Based on differences in morphology, advertisement calls (where available) and phylogenetic analyses of a 787 base pair alignment from the mitochondrial ND4 gene and flanking tRNA, we describe five new species of small treefrogs from hill and lower montane forests in the high rainfall belt that straddles the southern versant of Papua New Guinea’s Central Cordillera.
Three of these species are known only from forest growing on karst substrates, adding to the growing number of herpetofauna species currently known only from the extensive karst habitats of Papua New Guinea’s South-fold Mountains.
We also describe the arboreal breeding strategies of two of the new species, and report obligate treehole (phytotelm) breeding in New Guinean frogs for the first time. The new phytotelm–breeding species has juveniles with colour and patterning that closely resemble bird droppings, suggesting defensive mimicry or masquerade.
A preliminary phylogeny suggests that arboreal-breeding frogs do not form a monophyletic group and that arboreal breeding has evolved multiple times within the New Guinean pelodryadid radiation. A further striking feature of the phylogeny is poor support for most basal nodes in the most diverse radiation of Melanesian Pelodryadidae, suggesting rapid ecological diversification and speciation, potentially following colonisation from Australia and/or mountain uplift.
These new taxa and observations highlight previously unrecognised ecological and reproductive diversity in the Melanesian Pelodryadidae.

How Lack of an ND Filter and Pre Flight Plan Affects Drone Filming
Drone filming provides an effective way of capturing high-quality photos and videos from an aerial view. It can capture sceneries and terrain that proved previously challenging to photograph. To optimize drone filming, avoid common mistakes, such as forgetting to use an ND filter or planning.
Forgetting to use an ND filter or neutral density filter, a tiny layer of tinted glass attached to a drone camera can compromise the quality of imagery. The goal is to prevent overexposed footage as ND filters help to block excessive incoming light on a sunny day to guarantee a higher-quality picture. ND filters range from ND2 to ND4 and ND8, among others. The higher the filter value, the less light enters the camera.
Next, failure to conduct pre-flight planning increases the chances of risks and errors during the filming process. A pre-flight checklist is necessary to review the entire process and should include analyzing the filming location, airspace regulations, equipment readiness, and weather conditions. Pre-flight planning also includes acquiring the necessary permits and clearance from local authorities, relevant governing bodies, and property owners. Failure to obtain the required clearance often leads to legal issues that compromise the project and cause disruptions.
