âEveryone on This Train Is a Suspectâ by Benjamin Stevenson
5 Stars
***Thanks to NetGalley and Mariner Books for the eARC copy of this book. My opinions are my own. This book came out yesterday!***
This mystery is the follow-up to âEveryone in My Family Has Killed Someone.â Instead of being at a winter resort, this time its on train excursion across the deserts of Australia.
You may remember from my last review that this series breaks the fourth wall and Ernest our main character talks to his readers and âwroteâ the book, âEveryone in my FamilyâŚâ So in this volume, Ern is again âwritingâ this book about what happened to him on this train.
After the success of Ernâs first book, he is invited to be a part of a crime-writing festival that will take place on a days-long trip on a fancy train. Five other authors are also invited. Ern is the debut author who wrote non-fiction. The other authors specialize in forensic science, legal thrillers, and psychological suspense among sub-genres. When one of the authors dies, Ern attempts to use his peersâ particular skills to figure out who did it.
Of course there is the obvious connection to Agatha Christieâs âMurder on the Orient Express,â but Ern tells us straight off that his story isnât of the locked-room variety, because the rooms donât have locks. So even though the books are similar in vibe, I found them to be very different in actuality.
I enjoyed this SO much! And I hope this series keeps going, because I thought this was better than the first and that so rarely happens. The mystery is so well developed and I thought the premise was really clever.
I discussed in my prior review that I didnât like the chattiness in the first book. By that I mean Ern stopping the story to talk to his reader. That is still present throughout this book, but it didnât bother me this time at all. So either I got used to the device or Stevenson incorporated the device in a way that I appreciated more. Iâm leaning towards the latter.
I recommend reading the series in order because there is a lot of character development in this book that directly ties back to the first book.

New Beginnings and Interesting Reads
Mary Fowler x Reader
Requested by Anon
Honestly, she'd thought she could get away with not stopping to check on the little red light on her dash. It was just blinking so incessantly that she wanted desperately to have it just go away.
Who would have thought the great Mary Fowler, Australian Matildas Footballer, was one to ignore her car screaming at her until it forced her to pull over.
So now, she was stuck on foot, walking around a tiny ass town on the outskirts of Manchester after having it towed to the local mechanic. It wasn't tiny tiny, after all, there was, in fact, a mechanic.
There were a few dotted shops here and there, and there was a main street with a couple of grocery stores and various goods and services fronts. One that, for some reason, stood out to her was a rustic little two storey building. Standing out from the modernised concreting of the other stores surrounding it.
As she walked up to the door, she could see it was a bookstore. Books were lining the windows of varying conditions and colours.
The Rugged Pages.
Huh. Seems like something from a fantasy universe. Perfect way to kill time.
A little bell chimes when she steps in the store with a little push of the door. It's only a few seconds before a smiling employee greets her from behind one the many book laden wooden shelves.
She greets the employee back but doesn't really get a good look at them because she's too preoccupied looking around at the interior of the place.
It's a much bigger interior than she expected. Instead of a full second floor, there's a balcony that wraps around the outer walls and a set of what looks like mahogany stairs leading up from the far left. The centre of it opens up to peer into the upper ceiling and the walls of bookshelves that line the balcony.
There's dozens of shelves downstairs, with varying genres of books and age grouped stories. Starting with the kids' section towards the front and the more adult esque reads towards the far wall.
The oak counter is sat towards the far right of the back wall, a doorway just set in behind it leading in to what Mary assumes is a back/storage room.
"Is there anything I can help you with, miss?"
The accent is shockingly familiar to the aussie. A smile creeps onto her face as she gets a full look of the person behind the australian accent.
Shoulder-length hair pulled up into a high bun with a midlength undercut that looks like it hasnt been shaved down in a few weeks. A pair of plastic framed country road glasses sit on your face, and you're wearing a loose-fitting red flannel shirt tied at the waist with a browny looking red shirt underneath. It's paired together with some black jeans and a pin tacked to the outer pocket on your flanno. The pin has your name on it surrounded by intricate metal flows and vines.
It reads "Hi! My name is Y/n."
"Hey, no, I'm all good, just browsing."
You nod softly with a small smile. You tilt your head back towards where you're loading a big box of books onto some of the smaller shelves designed for kids towards the front of the store.
"Let me know if you need anything."
Mary nods softly before moving to peruse one of the shelves in with it marked 'LGBTQIA+'.
The shelf is lined with varying titles and fronts. There's markers every few books. 'MLM' 'WLW' 'Bisexual Romance' 'Chaotic Ace' (That one makes her snicker a little) 'WLW Mystery' and many other categories. She picks out a title that sticks out to her. 'The Shattered Lands' by Brenda Nation. Perfect, that will do.
She peruses a bit longer in other sections but eventually makes her way to the counter where you pop out from your spot, loading books up.
"Ah, the Shattered Lands, that's a good read. From tiktok?" A little confused, Mary shakes her head.
"No, I.. I just thought it might be interesting." You raise your brow slightly. A smile pulls at your lips.
"I'm glad then. The only time anyone buys this one is if they're fans of the author from tiktok. It's nice to see someone pick it up for the genuine interest. It was a good one to read. If you have the time, there's a little reading corner just by the window if you like."
Mary glances over. It's a comfy little nook with couches and multiple cushions, both on the floor and on the seating. She is killing time at the moment, and she mentions as such, agreeing to stay for a bit to read the book. It was gonna be a few hours before she had to go get her car again. The mechanic said she'd call Mary when the car was fixed. She's lucky. She's got a few days yet before she has anything she needs to do urgently.
"Actually, I might take you up on that offer, I'm stuck here til my car gets fixed, so I've got plenty of time to kill."
You nod in understanding, "Make yourself comfy." As you gesture to the lounge area.
She manages to bury herself into the book for about an hour, various people coming and going, some regulars that she hears you greet with a warm smile and playful tone, most new customers travelling through looking for some quick picks to read on their travels, which you greet with a bright smile and help guide them to what they're looking for.
Eventually, though, she's left feeling a little stiff and eventually gets up to wander the shelves. She finds you reading a book yourself at the counter, having completed stacking any new deliveries for the day. You look up at her as she does so, eyes following her over the top of the pages.
"So what's got you coming through here? Travelling from home? Doesn't sound too much like you're from around this area."
Her eyes crinkle with a laugh as she approaches and sits on one of the stools placed underneath the countertop.
"No, I'm just in from Manchester, I live and work there for eight months out of the year, I am from Australia though, just moved for the job, I take it you were too?"
You nod, "Little podunk set of towns in NSW. Moved up north for the opportunity with a business partner of mine. Ended up owning this place instead. Plus, the women's soccer is nice to have available to watch."
Mary blushes a little at that. Did you know?
You chuckle a little, blushing a bit yourself, oops. "Yeah, sorry, I didn't wanna call you out like that. I knew who you were, just didn't wanna bring it up on you, keep work at work, that kind of thing."
She laughs at that, shaking her head.
"Honestly, thank you for that. It's nice to have a little time to myself without any professionalism. Don't worry, though. You had me fooled for a good bit."
Your eyes sparkle with a little playfulness. "Happy to be of service, m'lady." Before continuing. "How're you liking the book so far?"
Mary, to her credit, actually had been enjoying the book, but she couldn't sit still long enough to read anymore.
"It's been pretty good, I got up to the bit about Sapphire going to find the red-haired witch in the forest to ask about what she might know about her origins."
"Ah, you're in for a treat then. The book keeps you on your toes, though."
"Right? There are so many twists already."
"But I'm guessing you're getting a little fidgety there?"
Her nose scrunches up a little, and she sheepishly nods. "Not much of a sitter I've come to discover."
You nod, biting your lip a little. "Would you wanna take a walk around town for a bit? I've got a lunch break for an hour or so. I figured, since you've time and all."
You pause to wait for a bit before backtracking again, a little flustered. "Not that you have to, I just thought you might wanna get out of here for a bit. Come look at some of the cafes with me."
Mary smiles and nods a little more enthusiasticly than she likes. "Absolutely, of course, but I wouldn't want to take up your time."
"Absolutely not, I'm offering. I kinda wanna learn more about you."
She smiles back, nodding, and you begin grabbing your stuff before leading her out of the store and locking the place up temporarily with an "on break" sign posed in the window.
You walk beside her for a few blocks, chatting idly about the town and its aspects. "There's a few places I go to when I forget to buy food for work, which today happens to be one of those days."
You lead her to a cozy little coffee shop. Inside, it's a bit warmer, and the smell of brewing liquid life permeates the air. You nod at the barista working the register. "That's Em, my most likely future best man."
Emily looks up at you as you enter. "Look who it is, ratbag. In for the morning usual?"
You shake your head amused, "Yeah, Em, and another one for the new girl."
"Hi, how are you? I'm Emily."
"Hey, nice to meet you, I'm doing pretty good, keeping this one busy, it seems."
"I'm showing her the good places to hit up in town, just getting coffee first. How do you want your coffee?"
Mary gives her order to Em, who starts working on the two beveridges right away. As you wait, she asks about the reason in particular for this town.
"Cause she can't get enough of this!" Emily yells out from behind the machine.
You roll your eyes at the barista. "Nah, you're a pain in the ass."
"You love this ass."
"Too much sometimes, honestly, why are we friends again?"
She gives you a mock offended look, clutching at invisible pearls.
You chuckle and turn back to the striker beside you. "The opportunity was there. The place was cheap, and a quick fix. Plus, the people here are okay."
Emily interjects, waving you both over.
"Actually, the people here are really nice. This one's just an asshole." She winks at Mary as she says it.
"Don't listen to her. She's just jealous cause she can't get a date in a town with a population of two hundred."
Mary raises a brow at that.
"A date?"
You flush quickly realising what you said. "I mean, it was more of a-"
"Nice going sweetheart'."
You whip your head around at the girl behind the counter. "Shut up."
Mary's head tilts back in a laugh. "If you wanted this to be a date, all you had to do was ask."
Your mouth drops open at that, and Emily laughs at your expression. Mary smirks as she picks up her drink and walks to the door, gesturing for you both to keep moving.
"I like this one, keep her around for me!"
Em calls after you, and you turn to glare at the blonde.
This woman certainly has you on your toes.
Your cheeks are basically pinker than they've ever been but you follow regardless, a little sheepish if anything.
You rub at your neck as you both slowly stroll around the corner, away from view. "Sorry about that, I just kind of assumed and I-"
"Ask me."
You look up at her confused.
"Ask me, you want it to be a date, ask me."
Your bite your lower lip trying to hold back from a massive grin.
"Will you join me in this fine, fine hour and go on a date with me?"
"Nah."
Your head does a double take before the girl chuckles and shakes her head.
"I'm kidding, of course I will."
You sigh in relief. You didn't wanna miss this opportunity. She's gorgeous, she plays your favourite sport for a living, she likes to read and she lives relatively close to you. It's nice not to have to be stuck in a one sided long distance relationship. Woah, hold your horses, hasn't gotten that far yet.
"Great, then I've got a great place we can go to, just give me a few minutes while I go lock up for the day, a half hour isn't long enough to be honest."
You're gone for about ten minutes, and you come back to Mary back inside the cafe, chatting with your friend.
"Hey, sorry about that, ready to go?"
Mary nods, and Emily waves you both goodbye.
She slips her arm around yours. You're slightly shorter than her, so it's a little weird at first, but you eventually settle into the hold.
You both walk to another section of town. There, you bring her to a place that looks like a little sandwich shop with a massive arcade attached to it. You tell her about your first encounter here. The place looked decent and turned out to be pretty good. Good enough that you were back on the regular.
"Hey, Y/n, usual today?"
Georgie greets you from behind the register.
"Not today, I'm with someone for a few hours."
"Ah, gotcha. What would you like love?"
Mary hums for a second, browsing over the menu. You watch as she pulls her bottom lip between her teeth for a second, and you realise you're staring when she looks back at the cashier. "I'll have a number 12 and a water, please." "Coming right up, hon, and for you L/n?"
"I'll take a number 5 today, please."
"No mayo, extra pickles with a sunkist?"
"You got it."
"16 pound 50 today love."
You're quick to jump in and tap your card before Mary pulls her phone out. She pouts at you, and you chuckle. "I asked you out."
"Only because I told you to." You stick your tongue out at that cheekily. "I wanted to."
Your food comes quickly, and you find a table in the corner, away from the door and any large windows.
The food is amazing as per usual, and the look on Mary's face agrees with that from her first bite. The food is always good here.
"Good, right?"
She groans, "You're kidding, right? How do they make sandwiches taste so good?"
You chuckle and shrug, "No idea, must be that southern English love."
"I swear my nutritionist is gonna kill me, that and my bank account."
"Yeah, I tend to avoid this part of town most days because if I even get close to this place, I can't resist a good teriyaki chicken club."
You finish your food and drinks, and you pull her up with a giddy grin as you lead her into the arcade and grab a loaded up card from your pocket.
"The food is amazing, but the games are pretty close. Come on, I wanna see what we can win today."
You spend the better part of two hours in there, ranging from a basketball hoop shooter to the Mario Kart racer. Turns out, Mary is really good at arcade games. And it turns competitive quite a few times.
In the end, you come away with a combined 2000 tickets.
Which is honestly pretty good for two people in that amount of time. With that, you both pick out a few lollies and a stuffed bear in a soccer uniform, which you all too happily hand over to her. (*It may have cost a few thousand more than you actually earned, but she doesn't need to know that you dipped into your saved tickets for it*)
In the end, the date slows down to a slow stroll around town in the late afternoon. And it's only when she finally gets a call from the mechanic that it has to come to an end.
You walk her back to just outside the mechanics while she picks up her car and pays for the repairs. She's parked it just on the street outside the bookshop while you two talk for a bit.
"Guess this is it for the night, then?" You ask tentatively, shuffling a little.
Mary smiles softly and nods a little.
"Yeah, I have to get back to Manchester with this stuff. And I've got teammates waiting for me to get back as well."
You nod in understanding. You're a little upset about the date ending, but you don't show it.
"Thank you for agreeing to come out with me today."
"Hey, pretty girl asks me out, I'm not gonna say no. Besides, I'm definitely gonna be back. I wouldn't wanna miss out on a second date. And a chance to pay you back for the bear as well." There's a twinkle in her eye that says she damn well knows how much you spent on her earlier, and you blush a little.
"So there's a second date?" You ask with raised brow.
"If you'll have me."
"Without a doubt." You answer without hesitation. Mary grins and grabs your hands in hers. She pulls you into her, and you grin, leaning up. She meets you halfway with a soft kiss to your lips.
It sends tingles down your spine, and her hands running up and down your arms leave goosebumps in their wake, making you shiver a little.
It deepens for a second before you take a step back, stopping yourself from holding her hostage here any longer and going any further than you should.
"You're amazing, you know that?"
It has her grinning, and she scrunches her nose adorably. Her hand finds yours to squeeze it a few times before she presses one last kiss to your lips and bids you farewell.
"I'll message you soon, pretty girl, I want that second date I was promised."
"Wouldn't miss it for the world, drive safe, cutie."
She waves goodbye and drives off, heading in the direction of the highway, going back to Machester.
You can still feel the tingle of lips against yours, the feel of her fingertips on your skin, and it leaves you keening for more, despite her being long gone. You'd have to keep an eye out on your phone now.
As Mary's cruising along the highway, all she can think about is how your lips felt against hers. How you'd grinned at her when she'd pulled you in to meet her against the side of her car. How easy the two of you just settled into easy banter and how open you seemed to be with her. You were definitely someone she didn't want to let go of just yet.

June isn't over yet but I'm looking at a couple of very busy weeks so it's unlikely I'll read a gazillion new books or something by end of month. So we do this now!
books I enjoyed so far
Aliette de Bodard's Dominion of the Fallen series, set in a post-apocalyptic Paris with fallen angels and magic and dragons in the Seine. I didn't quite love the three main novels, but I enjoyed how unique the world-building was. However, I REALLY loved the last two novellas about Asmodeus and his husband Thuan, who are a delicious pairing. The novellas are: Of Charms, Ghosts and Grievances and Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders.
Pacat's Dark Heir, which I enjoyed so much that I went back to reread Dark Rise and then again, Dark Heir. I liked the second novel a lot more than the first (and I actually ended up appreciating the first novel more on my reread). Needless to say, I am very, very impatient about the end of the series.
A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel. KJC has done it again. The sequel to her Doomsday Books series is fantastic, with a vivid cast, an excellent main pairing, and superb pacing. Couldn't put it down. A great historical m/m romance.
The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. I'd heard a lot about Miles and it was fun seeing him bullshit his way across the galaxy.
The Mountains of Mourning by Lois McMaster Bujold. A novella in the Vorkosigan saga. Very touching and emotional and a great character study of Miles. Really loved this.
Newcomer by Keigo Higashino. This dude is seriously amazing at crafting unusual murder mysteries. This one is structured as vignettes of shop-owners in a Tokyo neighbourhood and, as the stories progress, more light is shed on the mystery of a strangled woman.
Faithful Place and The Secret Place by Tana French. Fantastic prose, absorbing murder mysteries that are more like deep character studies as well as an incisive portrait of contemporary Ireland.
The Lady of the Lake by Andrzej Sapkowski. This is pretty grim at times, ngl, but it has a daring structure with lots of POVs, switching between numerous timelines, a frame device, lots of found materials (essays and chapters from fictional books). All that worked for me very well. I love some experimentation with craft. I wouldn't say it was my fave read, but I'm happy that I finally reached the end; completing a series always gives me a dopamine rush so yay
progress on my reading goals
A reminder that my two goals for the year are:
to read (some or all of) the Vorkosigan saga
to read less or no US authors
I'm doing pretty well on those two scores. Read a few installments of the Vorkosigan saga, and (besides Bujold and a poetry anthology by Maggie Smith) have read no other US-based authors. My intention was to diversify my reading and, indeed, so far, I've read French, Japanese, Polish, UK, Australian, Irish, and currently reading a Ukrainian author.
fics I loved
I've not read as many books as I normally do so far, esp in the last couple of months, but I read a lot more fic than recent years. I've read some fab stuff in a variety of fandoms. The fics I'm going to rec below are the longer ones that I read on my ereader:
Tarnished Gold by Prim_the_Amazing (bingqiu/svsss, M, 118k) Inventive premise. Couldn't put it down.
Memory (T, 23k) and Out of the Dead Land (M, 62k), both stucky, both orphaned by one of my top authors ever. The second one gave me the worst fic hangover I had in ages. I had to go and rewatch Captain America.
contrapasso by damagecontrol (jegulus, E, 41k) Very horny. I like that.
Fire Burn and Caldron Bubble by pastapug (jegulus, E, 40k) Lush language, fascinating setting.
Beholden by Faith Wood (faithwood) (drarry, E, 123k) Gave me all the drarry feels.
Shout out to @hoko-onchi-writes's WIP: To Hold You in the Earth's Unholy Din, which I am loving <3
That's all, folks. Here's hoping for more wonderful reads till December!

big fan of your romance novel complaint posts (love to see a fellow hater living it up) but iâm also curious if there are any you would recommend? not looking for anything in particular, just would love to hear your thoughts as someone else with nitpicky reading habits and a taste for trash
ok hello. i left you hanging for a FULL week and for that i am sorry but i wanted to be able to have some time to sit down and type out a real answer to which the short version is YES of course there are several that i have enjoyed!! my disclaimer is that i almost solely read gay romance so if you are looking for lesbian or even straight reccs i don't have much for you (although i will put a couple at the end anyway). hopefully something in this list is interesting to you or at least interesting to someone else! links are mostly to goodreads. break bc i'm gonna write too much
-kj charles is one of my fave authors in this genre bc they're all pretty reliable and there's a ton of them. they're all historical fiction and usually there's at least one murder- she's good at keeping a plot going while developing a romance. often supernatural or magical elements. sometimes cults! i've read almost all of the books she's written and have enjoyed them all
-charlie adhara wrote a really incredible werewolf series that i loved, the first of which is the wolf at the door. this is one of the only series i've read which keeps the emotional stakes up through the whole thing & kept me interested in a relationship after it was established bc sooo many series get boring the second the leads get together. i actually read the first book of the spin-off series (a pack of lies) first which is technically possible but i don't recommend bc i was like "wow they're really throwing me in here. i love it" and then i read the first series and i was like "oh i was supposed to know all this stuff." but i actually liked the dynamic between that couple better and i'm suffering every day because the next one still doesn't come out til 2025 and i read it in 2022. also worth noting that this (the original series) is cops-ajacent (~federal special agents~) and one of the characters is really prejudiced at the beginning & imo doesn't have enough character growth before it's waved away but if you can ignore that it's really good. mysteries! werewolves!
-speaking of werewolves (i could suggest several but i'll keep it to two) tj klune's wolfsong ends up at the top of a lot of gay werewolf novel lists (i'm keeping tabs) and there's a good reason. i enjoyed it a lot. made me kind of sad which is always a good sign to me. the writing voice was very fresh and novel at first but i did find it a little grating by the end so i've put off starting the second book in the series (it's also about a different couple which was disappointing) but i will get around to it. i enjoy tj klune in general although his recent stuff has a very different vibe than this and lightning struck heart is very 2015 in a bad way imo
-bone rider by j fally is a standalone that really delighted me. the russian mob? aliens? vaguely western? possession? throuple? it's got it all. very fun
-ok speaking of westerns there's this other series called magic & steam (yes it's steampunk. sorry. it's very silly) that starts with the engineer. a federal agent is sent to a town to apprehend a ~madman engineer~ except he runs into an infamous outlaw in the process. and the outlaw is really sexy. and probably why i enjoyed the series so much. the series also keeps them apart a lot in a way that i enjoy- i love when things take a long time. it's ongoing so this is another one that i keep checking for updates on
-i've read a lot of stuff by nr walker and they tend to be VERY hit or miss for me but one of my faves is evolved which is almost pure smut. it's about a sex robot that gains sentience. what more do i need to say. she also wrote a three-book series about an amnesiac that made me cry cry cry. and her cowboy (australian rancher) series is pretty ok. i could go through a list and tell you which novels of hers aren't worth it and which ones are good; i've read most of them
-salt magic skin magic by lee welch was a big surprise to me. cool magic, good folklore, fairies in there too. historical. big kj charles vibes which makes sense bc she edited it. welch also wrote a book called seducing the sorcerer which i had more mixed feelings about but had magic in it that i think about OFTEN (the horses)- that one's about an imposing sorcerer and a rundown groom cum handyman. and they're in their FORTIES!!! đĽłđĽłđĽł (i love when books are not about 23 year olds)
-another one with a magic system i enjoyed was magician by kl noone. this was the first book i read by this author and i liked it but generally i find their books are too "nice" for me. i'm in the middle of one right now that i started months and months ago that i keep trying to go back to and it's sooo rough for me. but this one and the twelfth enchantment are pretty ok
-emily tesh wrote a duology of silver in the wood and drowned country that i loved because i am suuuuch a sucker for a wild man/green man story. really good. haunting! evocative! kj charles has a green man story too which was actually the first thing i read of hers (spectred isle)
-i complained about the monsterfucker book i was reading a while back but despite that i will also recommend the series it's from: lily mayne's monstrous, which starts with soul eater. are they messy? yes. are they repetitive? yes. are the monsters usually disappointingly humanoid? yes. are a lot of them about the military? also yes. so we're starting off on a bad foot. but the world building is interesting and there's LOTS of kinds of monsters and most of them were pretty fun. the one i just read (#7) was the worst one of the bunch though imo. and i have problems with #6. but 1 2 and 5 were good
-ok i should do a quickfire round. honeytrap: about two enemy agents during the cold war. put it off for a long time bc i didn't love that but it takes place over a VERY long period of time which is always interesting to me. zero at the bone: about a hitman who needs to protect a witness to a mob hit. really strong start but fell off a bit in the middle to the end imo.
-you'll notice a lot of these have subgenres of like fantasy historical supernatural etc but here's some regular contemporaries. a lot of these are about sad guys bc those are my favorite. best laid plans: hardware store owner helps a guy fix his house. in the middle of somewhere: same author actually. guy moves to small town to work at a college. mr jingle bells: this is a christmas one. bad title. fake dating. part of the reason i think i liked it so much is because i expected it to be awful but it was actually pretty good. good emotional stakes. published 2021 but feels very 2014. ignore that part. work for it: i rated this five stars but actually don't remember much what it was like. i think they were both really sad which i love. give me big emotions and i eat them right up with a spoon. i should read it again
-OK now i've got some straight & lesbian options. talia hibbert's brown sisters series is good and cute. she also wrote work for it, above. the unhoneymooners is the first real Romance Novel that i read and it really surprised me because i had fun! previously i had kind of written off romance novels as not for me but this kicked off a reading habit that is still going strong (primarily reading romance novels). i read this in 2020 so it might not be as good as i remember. as for lesbian options olivia waite has a series that i enjoyed that's also historical, and a friend of mine really enjoyed delilah green doesn't care (but i haven't read that one myself). and while not really romances i will always be a sarah waters fan: you may recognize her as the author of fingersmith, which is the novel park chan-wook's movie the handmaiden is based on. if you haven't seen the movie or read the book i recommend both. her books are very dramatic lesbian historical fiction; they don't always have happy endings but they're all very good
ok i think that's the end! regular disclaimer that romance is generally not a genre notable for Good Writing so a lot of these are just things i had fun with or just stuck out in my memory for having fun conceits etc. i can't guarantee that any of these are actually good, especially because this is a list solely based on my own taste and bad memory. would love to hear anybody's thoughts and/or if anybody has recommendations for ME!!! this post took me over three hours to write! crazy!
#asks#dogda#ummm how should i tag this if i need to find it again#book reccs#book list#i have given a few of these to some of you as recommendations before! i love to talk about my stupid little romance novels#before you click on the readmore know that this is long

Carlando hurt/a bit of comfort just below!
Enjoy!
(everything stems from authorâs imagination)
âCabron!â Lando shouted, holding his suit in order to jog quicker.
The Spaniard slightly turned his gaze at him but returned to Rupert, carrying on their conversation.
Rupert nodded and smiled when Lando clasped his shoulder.
âAlright?â he asked the trainer. âHot innit?â he grinned.
âAnd youâre going to have to race.â Rupert remarked, giving him a kind pat and stepping a bit back to reach Gino.
Landoâs eyes returned to Carlos, who hadnât interact with him yet.
âWhat is it?â he asked him.
âWhat? Nothing.â Lando shrugged. âIâm a bit jittery.â he revealed.
âCalm down. Everythingâs good.â Carlos replied him, almost dismissively, a tone the other man never possessed for him.
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion but quickly disregarded it.
âAre we training this week?â he asked him.
âI will be very busy.â Carlos replied, typing something on his phone and quickly burying it in his pocket. Finally, his eyes found Lando, but the Brit only saw emptiness.
âCarlos, are you okay?â he finally asked by micro-analysing all the wrong signs.
âIâll see you later.â Carlos said and just like that, he walked away.
Lando stood there, watching him as he increased the distance between them. He watched as Carlos finally disappeared around Alpineâs motorhome, leaving him alone and extremely confused.
The great mystery of detached Carlos carried on for the extent of the week and when he never received a reply to his golf invitation, Lando gave up to focus on his race.
âWho from the grid was born in 1994?â Will asked then and instantly Lando pressed the little buzzer button.
âCarlos Sainz.â he replied.
âAh! There you go! A point for you!â Will excitedly said.
âThatâs 7-1.â Oscar reminded them the score.
âWell,â Lando grimaced. âIâve had better days.â he playfully said to the camera and thusly, the silly YouTube game for the official channel, ended.
Will waved them a polite goodbye as Lando shuffled further into the sofa.
âMate, youâre miserable.â
âYeah, thanks Oscar.â he rolled his eyes before shutting them both.
âOh, youâre in that mood.â he heard the Australian remarking and he hated him a little. The other Australian who was making his life hard once again in his own team. Sharp tongued and funny in a whole different way.
âPiss off, mate.â he mumbled and tried to sound as playful as possible.
He heard the faint sound of Oscarâs giggle as he was leaving the room and finally he found a good time for solitude and peacefulness.
He missed the podium for a tenth of a second and climbed out of his car with a granule of disappointment.
âAre we on for tomorrow?â Caco asked him, finding him outside hospitality.
Lando finished signing a picture of him and turned to the Spaniard.
âYeah, Max told me you booked it.â he said. âIs Carlos coming?â he asked him.
Caco raised his eyebrows then but quickly schooled his expression to return to normal.
âI donât know. This triple-header has been hard on him. Weâll see. Itâs either going to be Rupert or him.â he replied.
Lando squinted.
âSee you at eight.â Caco said, tapping his back.
When Lando arrived at the padel place hopeful, he got disappointed again. The other three players were already in the court but Carlos was nowhere to be seen.
âAre we doing Britain versus Europe?â Rupert grinned at him.
âSure.â Lando shrugged taking his place in the field.
Max bumped his racket on Cacoâs and walked in order to execute the first little serve.
âCarlos coming?â Lando asked Rupert.
âUm, no.â the Brit replied, dipping lower, focused forward.
If Lando got disappointed again, he never showed it.
âCabron? Is everything alright?â Lando had to try again because the though if Carlos being that cold was so unsettling, he couldnât relax when he was thinking about it.
He was tired enough to not having realised that the next day he was in Mexico City. It took him around ten minutes to remember his plane ride and a few more to actually decide to get up.
He trained intensely and ate his wrap with such eagerness, as if he was a starved man.
Still nothing.
Sundayâs driverâs parade came in a blink of an eye and Lando searched for Carlos before he was waved by Oscar to join him in their car.
âWere you looking for something?â Oscar asked him when the car started moving.
âYou.â Lando replied, smiling towards the crowd.
Oscar hummed a bit unconvincingly but nevertheless, let it go. Sometimes Lando thought that the young Australian knew more than he revealed. Behind that quiet stance he had going on, he was observant and intelligent. Lando hated that. âHateâ perhaps was a strong word.
âCarlos!â he finally found the man, as he was taking with Max.
Both men turned to find the source of the voice and one of them smiled widely. It was Max. Only Max smiled.
âI was just telling him how team Europe obliterated team Britain last Monday.â Max teased him immediately.
âI was out of form.â Lando sniffed, playing it cool. âWhere have you been mate? You miss both padel and golf practice.â he placed his hand on Carlosâs upper arm, forgetting the cameras around them for only a moment. He let go of him then, staring, wanting to hear a word from him.
âI have been experiencing a few back pains.â Carlos replied him. Coldly; absolutely coldly.
âYou? You have never been in pain since Iâve known you.â he said.
âWell, perhaps because Iâm getting old.â Carlos spat out and yeah, something was definitely wrong.
âYouâre not even thirty yet, mate.â Max added to the conversation when Landoâs silence filled the space.
âAnyway, Iâll see you later.â Carlos chose to ignore Maxâs utterance and Landoâs concerned gaze, walking away immediately a second after.
âHowâs your back? How are we going to golf in November?â He wrote before placing a laughing emoji. He stared at the screen and contemplated on whether to send it or not.
He had tried again to talk to him on Thursday evening, when he saw him outside Ferrari, getting Seniorâs attention first.
âLando Norris!â Senior hugged him. âHow are you son?â he asked.
âIâm well and you?â he replied him politely.
âYou are having a fantastic season. Congratulations!â he said to him.
Lando nodded affirmatively and finally turned to Carlos.
âI have been texting you. How is your back?â he asked him.
Carlos finally looked at him, brushing his fingers through his hair.
âItâs fine.â he replied him.
Lando inhaled deeply, biting down his tongue in order to stop himself from really barking at Carlos that he had been awful and cold and distant and unfamiliar.
âAre you? Fine?â he pushed just a bit more.
âIâm busy. Pa, letâs go?â he asked him turning around and climbing the little red steps.
Lando furrowed his eyebrows, watching him once again disappearing.
âHe has been strange. He is angry.â Senior said to Lando. âHe is bad with respect. He takes things very seriously, especially from you.â
Lando turned to the older man quickly.
âWhat? What do you mean? What did I do?â
Lando jogged to his motorhome and texted both Jon and Max.
âHavent you seen the video Iâve sent you a week ago?â Max asked him through the line.
âNo, I must have forgotten.â Lando replied him. âWhat is it? How did you know what Iâm talking about?â Lando furtively asked.
âBecause you did him dirty man! Itâs a complication of the same interview and it was all over Twitter.â
âWhat the fuck?â Lando whispered and quickly ended the call.
He remembers the interview; it was with some American podcast and he remembered having a miserable time but trying still to be funny and relaxed.
âIâve had this question ninety three times,â he giggled. âThere are not many friends aroundâŚI consider Max and Lewis the only two strong driversâŚCarlos made a lot of mistakes in that, yeahâŚFriends is a very big wordâŚHe didnât help me, he did it for himself, of courseâŚExcept from me I would like Oscar to win the ChampionshipâŚHaha, no, Oscar, not CarlosâŚI wish I could climb to fourth and pass CharlesâŚWhat? Carlos is? Carlos is above Charles? I didnât expect that!â
Lando cringed to the last line and locked his phone, placing it on the massage bed next to him.
âWhy the fuck would someone make a fucking compilation of that?â he asked the room through his teeth. âAnd fucking tag-â he didnât finish his utterance in order to take a deep breath in.
âLando, what is it?â Jon asked him.
âHave you seen this?â he showed him the video.
âAh, yes. It was all over Twitter-â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â he demanded through a foul squeal.
âBecause we have a job to do-â
âI donât need the tough love, Jon. Why did the PR-you know what? Iâm leaving.â he jumped off the bed and went looking for his backpack.
âI can talk to PR.â Jon offered.
âNo, leave it. The point was to-fuck.â he couldnât bear to explain either.
He returned to his hotel room and after a warm shower he fell on the bed very keen on sleeping.
It was sudden and overwhelming. He was used to pushing down and down everything that had to with Carlos; everything that wasnât the friendship they had built. He had locked away the desire that had slowly grown within him. Memories, moments risked back from every time he had though a bit more than he should have. When Carlos had looked at him a certain way, the way he had smiled, the way he had touched him.
Each word echoed in his mind, the dam of restraint broke. Tears welled up in his eyes and the anguish of unspoken love and pain washed over him. He was vulnerable and exposed to himself like never before. He wasnât as daft as he presented himself and he had realised his feelings long ago and because of that again, he had buried them deep inside, where even intrusive thoughts could not win.
âI didnât mean anything bad. I was trying to be cool or whatever. Carlos, you know me.â he sent. Perhaps it was too simple or perhaps it was too much, but Lando needed to do something, to say something and opted for that. If he was to overthink it, he would have never sent it.
The long awaited reply didnât come, even on FP Friday and he felt an emptiness in his stomach, still his words about Charles echoing in his mind.
âGood job! Letâs do the same on quali, yeah?â Will smiled at him.
âOf course.â Lando agreed and pulled out his headphones.
He was miserable. He was miserable at training, at dinner and even in his hotel room when he was in the confines of his own space.
He stared at the unanswered text, and the one above it and the one right above the other.
That son of a bitch. He hated him. He absolutely despised him.
âThatâs a pole position!â Will said in his ears. â*Good job! Need lineup?â
âHey-yo! Yes!â Lando pressed the radio button, slowing down. âYes! Gimme!â
âP2 Sainz, P3 Leclerc, P4 Verstappen, P5 Hamilton.â Will announced him.
âWell shit.â Lando mumbled after making sure he had his thumb off the radio button.
Charles approached him and told him something about turn seven while Lando was absolutely stuck on Carlos. The driver mode was off and he was back to a new kind of pinning; after so long he had reached this part. Distant unrequited pinning without even realising.
âGood job.â Carlos patted his shoulder when he approached him to get photographed.
âOh, he speaks.â Lando said through his teeth, smiling to the cameras.
Charles must have heard him because he turned his head to look at him, but did not remark.
And just like this, the Spaniard walked away.
Lando felt his heart dropping and tried really hard to school his expression to a neutral one when he returned to the garage and was congratulated by everyone.
âCarlos, this is getting ridiculous.â
âMy tyres are gone, man.â he said to the radio line.
âPush as long as you can. Two laps to go.â Will said to him and really Lando knew the answer. They hadnât expected that kind of degradation and there was no room for a pit stop, he wasnât far enough from the Ferrari behind him. He was rather sure that on the next DRS zone, he was going to get overtaken. There was no point making his tyres pop.
It was Carlosâs Ferrari that made a move on turn four of all the turns and Lando tried to defend but it was useless.
âLando, donât fight with him, we need to finish.â
âWasnât gonna.â Lando replied Will a bit annoyed. He looked on his mirror and saw Lewis behind.
âOne corner, Lando.â he heard and inhaled deeply. âThatâs it! Well done! P2!â
âThanks guys, Iâm sorry about the tyres, Iâm not sure what went wrong.â he addressed the whole garage and factory and let go of the button.
He watched as Carlos stood on his Ferrari and raised his arms up. His eyes caught his father and walked quickly to him, keeping his visor down. His eyes were destroyed by the sweet and the tears that had started forming the moment he had got out his car. Every emotion he carried burst out of him completely. Out of the blue.
He felt a tap on his shoulder and turned to find Carlos waiting for him.
âSorry.â he said to him the moment he embraced him.
âMy fault.â Lando replied him.
Carlos pulled back and reached for his visor, raising it up to find his eyes. Oh, the Twitter people were going to have a field trip.
âLando?â a question in his voice.
Thankfully, the director had to take Carlos away for his interview with DC and Lando managed to weight himself, calm down and take his balaclava off in order to wet his whole face with water. Good enough.
âWhat happened?â Lewis asked him in the cool down room.
âMy tyres were destroyed. There was a massive increase on the asphalt heat.â he replied him.
Carlos walked into the room two and went straight for his water. He looked at the screen and his gaze stayed there for the whole minute they remained in the room.
The cameras cut and Carlos turned to him.
âOkay?â he asked him.
âYeah.â Lando shrugged and followed Lewis.
He was drenched in champagne by the both men on the podium and smiled for the picture.
âOi! Look here!â Rupert met them in the hallway, pointing his phone at them.
He opened his instagram and found no post; not like the last time. There was no use of the word âcarlandoâ. There was nothing.
âCarlosâŚâ
He threw his phone to his side and placed his arms over his eyes, trying really hard to not release what he actually felt.
âJon, can you do me a huge favour?â he asked the drowsy man on the other side of the line.
He walked and decided he, under no circumstance, would ever say to anyone that he walked alone at that time of the night around SĂŁo Paolo until he reached Carlosâs hotel.
âCarlos, itâs me.â he said as lowly as possible when he heard shuffling from the other side of the door.
The door opened and Carlos appeared, semi-naked and very sleepy.
âLando- what the-â
âIâm sorry.â Lando stopped him, shutting the door behind him. âI hadnât realised-I didnât mean all that, it sounded awful.â he said.
Carlos pulled over his head a t-shirt and fixed his hair by fluffing them even more than before.
âI was being sarcastic and a bit annoyed with the hosts. I donât remember anything.â
âLando, okay,â Carlos rubbed his face with his palm and took a step forward. âItâs okay if you feel that way-â
âBut I donât! I think you are a very intelligent and strong driver and of course you can win the Championship and of course you are my friend and of course you are above Charles. I was just-just teasing-I donât know!â he said all in one breath, feeling his eyes stinging. He wouldnât cry. No.
âItâs not about-you-I cannot do this.â
âNo, you will.â Lando took a step forward too. âYou have been awful and you never told me why. I had to find out from your dad?â
Carlos exhaled lengthily. He was tired, he looked it certainly.
âYou are welcomed to have those opinions. I just always think that friends should support each other and itâs all I have done since the first time I saw you. I met you.â Carlos tried to translate his thoughts into English, poor man. âI know itâs just press but sometimes words hurt especially from your friend. But well, you said there are no friends around.â
Lando blinked at him. His hand hovered above his neck by its own accord and he felt his breathing quickening.
âYou are my friend. It was stupid and I didnât think about it too much.â
âAll I am saying is that support and respect are everything for me. I think that I have been both since we have met. But still, your opinion is your opinion Lando. Now I know that you feel-â
âNo,â Lando said moving towards him and grabbing his face between his palms. He needed for Carlos to look at him right in the eye. To make sure he was looking. âI think you are incredible, Carlos. I-I think you are everything.â he whispered, his eyes falling on the Spaniardâs plump lips.
Carlos slightly raised his eyebrows in surprise but didnât push him away, he didnât falter.
âLandoâŚâ
âIâm sorry. I was trying to be cool or whatever. My mind is a mess sometimes.â he said.
Carlos slightly nodded, afraid of disturbing Landoâs hold.
âCabron,â the slightly taller man whispered. âIâm sorry. You can explain everything, I can too.â
A goddamn tear escaped him and he went to wipe it but Carlos beat him to it and caught it with his thumb.
âDonât. Lando,â he breathed. âKiss me.â he uttered.
âWhat?â Lando stuttered.
âWill you? I want to show you that I believe you and that Iâm sorry too.â he explained.
And again, Lando wasnât as daft as he portrayed himself. He would be pretty dense if he didnât just do it. So he did.
Carlos tried to show him and he succeeded, making him a moaning mess. Who would have thought? Well, Lando had thought.
âCarlosâŚâ he whispered when they finally paused.
âCariĂąo.â Carlos run his fingers through Landoâs curls. âThat was bound to happen from the very start, no?â he smiled lopsidedly.
Lando mirrored him but his grin became wider, wilder.
âYeah, yes it was.â he giggled.
âLet me post the Carlando picture now, eh?â he playfully said, leaning in again.

I canât resist an underwater setting for a story â there are so many more elements that can go wrong, life is a little more vulnerable beneath the surface. âThe Diveâ looks like it checks all the boxes, an underwater mystery thriller guaranteed to take your breath away. The Story
In Weyward, the narrative intertwines the lives of three women spanning five centuries. In 2019, Kate seeks solace in Weyward Cottage, escaping from London and her abusive partner. She slowly unravels a mystery hidden within the cottage's history, hinting at secrets from her great aunt's past and the 17th-century witch hunts. In 1619, Altha faces trial for a murder she didn't commit, relying on her unconventional nature magic to defend herself against accusations of witchcraft. Meanwhile, in 1942, Violet feels trapped by societal constraints and the prison of her family's estate, yearning for freedom and the memory of her mother, who was rumored to have gone mad before her death. The only remnants of her mother's existence are a locket marked with a mysterious "W" and the word "weyward" etched into the bedroom's baseboard. This novel masterfully weaves these women's tales together, revealing a compelling narrative of strength across generations and the transformative influence of the natural world.

The Review
I picked Weyward up on a whim and am so pleased that I did. Historical fiction mixed with magical realism and a dash of incredibly rich writing made it a real pleasure to read. The narrative weaves between three women across five centuries, deftly showcasing the myriad ways in which women demonstrate resilience and bravery under difficult circumstances.
Being totally honest, I often struggle with split narrative timelines in novels. I canât be the only one who has found themselves bored with one section of a book, willing the boring chapters to end in order to get back to the characters I am invested in⌠right? Thankfully, Weywardâs leading ladies are all so fabulous and their stories so engaging, that I was invested in each timeline equally. This actually sped up my reading as the story progressed, as I wanted to find out how each character was doing in their timeline more and more desperately. If you want to read a moving story with wonderful characters that emphasizes the transformative power of nature, please pick this up!
Witch. The word slithers from the mouth like a serpent, drips from the tongue as thick and black as tar. We never thought of ourselves as witches, my mother and I. For this was a word invented by men, a word that brings power to those who speak it, not those it describes. A word that builds gallows and pyres, turns breathing women into corpses.
One thing I will say before really digging in to the review, is that there are a lot of trigger warnings for this novel (see above for a summary). Reading through the list, it may seem that this is a tome of sheer doom and gloom, but it actually didnât feel that way to me. Obviously, a lot of the trigger warnings may be Hard Nos for some people, and thatâs totally fair, however I found this story so engaging and the characters so strong, that the TWs didnât beat me down as much as they could have. Being set across five centuries, this book explores a number of methods by which patriarchal societies abuse women. Â From the outright cruelties of the 17th Century to the more insidious offences of modern society, there is a lot of violence and misogyny at work here. It can get difficult in parts, but I found myself uplifted by the womenâs strength in the end.
Now, Iâve discussed how strong the characters are; let me properly introduce them to you! Kate, living in her 2019 timeline, wants to escape a violent partner and discover the truth about her family. Violet, in 1942 and the midst of the Second World War, wants to escape the societal confines and expectations of femininity and live a life she chooses. Altha in 1619 just wants to survive. I loved them all. I cared about them all. I may have even shed a tear or two over them (and books donât make me cry super often). I particularly loved Violet and her sheer determination to live her own life. I really appreciated seeing her as a teen from her own perspective, as well as from Kateâs perspective looking back at Violet as an old woman. (I want grow up to be an eccentric old lady with the witchiest house in the world just like her!) The interlacing of their stories is so well conceived, it really feels like youâre seeing a cohesive timeline rather than random sections plonked together.
Perhaps one day, she said, there would be a safer time. When women could walk the earth, shining bright with power, and yet live.
There is so much witchcraft detail in this book, dropped in so sneakily and creatively, I just loved it! All the leading ladies have Witch Marks (which definitely need to be used in witchy stories more frequently), but theyâre not overly emphasized⌠theyâre just there and mentioned in passing in various subtle ways. The way the Familiars work is also super cool; not every animal can be a familiar, and they arenât necessarily easily controlled, but they provide emotional support and do their witchesâ bidding when needed. I especially loved the constant presence of the crows, which at first seem wild and dangerous, but eventually become as important to the plot as the leading characters as symbols of power. And I love, love, love how the magic stems so much from the witchesâ connection to the natural world. It just felt so right to me.
One notable factor in Weyward for me was how deftly Emilia Hart wove historical facts into the narrative. From the Lancashire Assizes to the Pendle Witch Trials and King James I and his obsession with Witch Hunts, Althaâs timeline felt so based in history as to be almost visceral. This sort of thing really happened to living women. I was especially impressed by the use of the Great Comet of 1618; Hart definitely did her research in order to place her story firmly in the real world, with an additional magical touch.
There was something about us â the Weyward women â that bonded us more tightly with the natural world. We can feel it, she said, the same way we feel rage, sorrow or joy. The animals, the birds, the plants â they let us in, recognising us as one of their own. That is why roots and leaves yield so easily under our fingers, to form tonics that bring comfort and healing. That is why animals welcome our embrace. Why the crows â the ones who carry the sign â watch over us and do our bidding, why their touch brings our abilities into sharpest relief.
Weyward has become one of my favourite reads for 2024, and has 100% got a solid seat in my Top Ten of the Year. It is endlessly impressive to me that is was Emilia Hartâs DEBUT NOVEL. Seriously, my hat is off to her for creating a story that felt so real and so magical at the same time. I will definitely be reading more of her work as it is published. If my recommendation isnât enough, Weyward also won Goodreadsâ Best Historical Fiction title in 2023. And if you buy a physical copy of the book, you get a neat little flip book of a crow flying in the page corners. If all that doesnât sell it to you, I donât know what will.

This sensual and striking chronicle of a disappearance and its aftermath put director Peter Weir on the map and helped usher in a new era of Australian cinema. Based on an acclaimed 1967 novel by Joan Lindsay, Picnic at Hanging Rock is set at the turn of the twentieth century and concerns a small group of students from an all-female college who vanish, along with a chaperone, while on a St. Valentineâs Day outing. Less a mystery than a journey into the mystic, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society, Weirâs gorgeous, disquieting film is a work of poetic horror whose secrets haunt viewers to this day.
