Hi can I request something where jaster picks up obi wan early in his apprenticeship like on bandomeer or melida/daan and just adopts him and jango and obi grow up as like childhood sweethearts? Love your work, thanks for writing! :)
(**because they get together as teens, i’ve adjusted the age difference to 2 years instead of 9 because just like. no. they’re 17 and 19 in this!
hmm also i feel the need to say the true mandalorians being chill about showing their faces is super intentional in all my works, i have so. many. headcanons about different clans, and why the covert is so careful about their helmets, and i just never seem to find the time to talk about it (๑o̴̶̷̥᷅ㅂo̴̶̷̥᷅๑) sigh someday)
“Stop smiling, you smug bastard,” Obi-Wan grouses as his would-be suitor awkwardly shuffles away under Jango’s feral grin.
Endlessly pleased with himself, Jango leans against their starfighter and watches the Chiss mechanic disappear into the crowded spaceport. “That’s three you owe me, ‘Nobi.”
Obi-Wan glares at him and snatches Jango’s buy’ce from his hands to shove it on his stupid vod’s head. “I can take care of myself, Vhett. I don’t owe you banthashit.”
“It’ll be easier when you finish your armor,” Jango adds unhelpfully, righting his helmet and strapping it on properly as if nothing had happened. “Only drunks and spice-addicts try to hit on with Mandalorians in full beskar’gam.”
“That’s very reassuring, thanks.”
“If you two are done flirting,” Bosoloc cuts in, their Arconan pilot smirking down at them from the primary cockpit, “we were supposed to meet your buir hours ago.”
Obi-Wan says, “That’s Jango’s fault,” just as Jango grumbles,
“‘Nobi’s fault.”
Bosoloc levels them both with a world-weary look that has them scrambling up the rusty ramp stairs to the secondary cockpit. Obi-Wan helps Jango over the edge and kicks away the ramp, before pulling the lever to close the blast canopy over their heads. With only minor grouching, he lets Jango tug him onto the edge of the seat between his legs, because this starfighter is absolutely not made for three pilots.
“Hands to yourself, spacer,” Obi-Wan says as he follows Bosoloc’s lead to get the ‘fighter ready for the short flight to the nearby moon where they’re to rejoin the Haat’ade and, hopefully, avoid a lecture about safety. Again.
Jango chuckles, impossibly close, and slips Obi-Wan’s own helmet onto his head. “You’re the one that got us into this mess,” he reminds him, somehow managing to fasten the strap under Obi-Wan’s chin without looking.
Bosoloc signals for takeoff, and Obi-Wan elbows Jango in the ribs, leaning over to calibrate the astronav system. Practically oozing his amusement, Jango innocently sets his hands on Obi-Wan’s hips, but doesn’t otherwise bother him until they’re out of atmo, properly refueled this time. Which had maybe sort of, yes, been Obi-Wan’s fault that they had not been when they left Concord Dawn.
Not that he would ever admit to it.
-
The Haat’ade camp on Aslo II is a whirlwind of activity, commandos in various states of beskar’gam running back and forth from tents to their ships, blaster cartridges exchanged faster than words as supercommandos bark orders and direct the foot traffic, and Obi-Wan lives for this.
The energy, the excitement before a battle, the way his people leak every thought into the Force until he can’t feel anything else. The way this is the closest he’ll ever come to being a knight.
Jango takes one look at his expression after dropping from the starfighter, and shakes his head. “Alright, come on, adrenaline junkie,” he snorts, grabbing Obi-Wan by the arm to tug him right into the heart of the whirlwind.
He senses Jaster before he sees him, their Mand’alor all but glittering in the Force compared to the more muted signatures of the other Haat’ade; Jaster will swear up and down that being Mand’alor has nothing to do with the Force, and Obi-Wan can’t really remember much of what he’d learned in the Temple, but he knows Jaster’s full of it. The whole camp orbits around one nondescript tent, as if pulled by a physical gravity to their leader, and what little he does remember tells him the Force is just as much a part of the Mando’ade as it is the Jedi.
“Buir!” Jango calls as he drags Obi-Wan into the tent where Jaster is standing before a dataterminal with one of the supercommandos. He looks away from the graph Obi-Wan wouldn’t be able to make heads or tails of, and visibly sags in relief.
“And we thought we’d actually have to hold a funeral this time,” Ezovaq says from Jaster’s side, smiling benignly as Jango unclips his buy’ce and bounds forward to accept the hair-ruffle Jaster gives him.
But Kyr’tsad is closing in, and they don’t really have time to discuss the, arguably obscene, number of disappearances the Mand’alor’s foundlings have managed.
Obi-Wan joins them at the terminal, leaving his own helmet on. Jaster settles for knocking his knuckles on his forehead in greeting, and Ezovaq respectfully looks away; some things are not meant for anyone but clan.
“I’m glad to see you both in one piece,” Jaster sighs, turning back to the holoscreen and adding a datachip to the terminal so a map of Aslo replaces the graph. “When we did not hear from Bosoloc, we worried.”
“We needed to stop on Aslo to refuel,” Obi-Wan says on external comm, still unsure about how to speak with other commandos around. “A tropical storm had communications out until we were out of atmosphere. Sorry, Jas’alor,” he adds sheepishly, because of course Jaster knows who would have fueled the ‘fighter on Concord Dawn. Or not fueled, as it were.
Jango shoehorns himself against Obi-Wan’s side, the familiarity of the action catching Ezovaq’s gaze, but they say nothing as Jaster gives Obi-Wan a tired smile. “It is nothing, ad’ika. It is only a mistake repeated twice.”
“Bosoloc is finding another pilot,” Jango butts in, dropping an arm around Obi-Wan’s shoulders as easy as breathing. “She said Montross flew ‘Nobi’s and my fighter in?”
And Obi-Wan feels a swell of pride at that, that Jango is finally admitting they share custody of the rustbucket Jaster had gifted Obi-Wan for his fifteenth nameday, and at the implication that his and Jango’s repairs and advancements had been deemed worthy enough for an actual battle with Kyr’tsad. He isn’t an ace mechanic by any means, but Obi-Wan is still ridiculously proud of their S3 Y-wing – even if using it in combat puts Obi-Wan in the gunner’s chair and Jango behind the wheel.
To be fair, Jango hasn’t crashed them in over a year.
Jaster’s mouth moves as he responds, but Obi-Wan doesn’t hear it. White-hot fire races up his spine, and it feels as if all the air is sucked from the tent all at once, and Obi-Wan has only a moment to try and identify what the Force is trying to warn him of before a light flashes on the terminal and Myles’ voice cuts through the muggy air.
“Vizsla’s dropped out of hyperspace,” he reports, and Jango tightens his arm. “Contact in ten minutes, Mand’alor.”
Jaster looks to them with a parent’s resignation. “You heard the man,” he says, jerking his chin to the tent flap. “Contact in ten.”
“Mand’alor!” they return in unison, and duck from the tent to rush to the Y-wing.
Mando’a: buy’ce — beskar helmet vod — “brother, comrade, sibling”, pl. vode, technically gender neutral but used most often in fandom as “brother”. used here to denote that they are both jaster’s foundlings. tips for choosing a Chinese name for your OC when you don’t know Chinese
This is a meta for gifset trade with @purple-fury! Maybe you would like to trade something with me? You can PM me if so!
Choosing a Chinese name, if you don’t know a Chinese language, is difficult, but here’s a secret for you: choosing a Chinese name, when you do know a Chinese language, is also difficult. So, my tip #1 is: Relax. Did you know that Actual Chinese People choose shitty names all the dang time? It’s true!!! Just as you, doubtless, have come across people in your daily life in your native language that you think “God, your parents must have been on SOME SHIT when they named you”, the same is true about Chinese people, now and throughout history. If you choose a shitty name, it’s not the end of the world! Your character’s parents now canonically suck at choosing a name. There, we fixed it!
However. Just because you should not drive yourself to the brink of the grave fretting over choosing a Chinese name for a character, neither does that mean you shouldn’t care at all. Especially, tip #2, Never just pick some syllables that vaguely sound Chinese and call it a day. That shit is awful and tbh it’s as inaccurate and racist as saying “ching chong” to mimic the Chinese language. Examples: Cho Chang from Harry Potter, Tenten from Naruto, and most notorious of all, Fu Manchu and his daughter Fah lo Suee (how the F/UCK did he come up with that one).
So where do you begin then? Well, first you need to pick your character’s surname. This is actually not too difficult, because Chinese actually doesn’t have that many surnames in common use. One hundred surnames cover over eighty percent of China’s population, and in local areas especially, certain surnames within that one hundred are absurdly common, like one out of every ten people you meet is surnamed Wang, for example. Also, if you’re making an OC for an established media franchise, you may already have the surname based on who you want your character related to. Finally, if you’re writing an ethnically Chinese character who was born and raised outside of China, you might only want their surname to be Chinese, and give them a given name from the language/culture of their native country; that’s very very common.
If you don’t have a surname in mind, check out the Wikipedia page for the list of common Chinese surnames, roughly the top one hundred. If you’re not going to pick one of the top one hundred surnames, you should have a good reason why. Now you need to choose a romanization system. You’ll note that the Wikipedia list contains variant spellings. If your character is a Chinese-American (or other non-Chinese country) whose ancestors emigrated before the 1950s (or whose ancestors did not come from mainland China), their name will not be spelled according to pinyin. It might be spelled according to Wade-Giles romanization, or according to the name’s pronunciation in other Chinese languages, or according to what the name sounds like in the language of the country they immigrated to. (The latter is where you get spellings like Lee, Young, Woo, and Law.) A huge proportion of emigration especially came from southern China, where people spoke Cantonese, Min, Hakka, and other non-Mandarin languages.
So, for example, if you want to make a Chinese-Canadian character whose paternal source of their surname immigrated to Canada in the 20s, don’t give them the surname Xie, spelled that way, because #1 that spelling didn’t exist when their first generation ancestor left China and #2 their first generation ancestor was unlikely to have come from a part of China where Mandarin was spoken anyway (although still could have! that’s up to you). Instead, name them Tse, Tze, Sia, Chia, or Hsieh.
If you’re working with a character who lives in, or who left or is descended from people who left mainland China in the 1960s or later; or if you’re working with a historical or mythological setting, then you are going to want to use the pinyin romanization. The reason I say that you should use pinyin for historical or mythological settings is because pinyin is now the official or de facto romanization system for international standards in academia, the United Nations, etc. So if you’re writing a story with characters from ancient China, or medieval China, use pinyin, even though not only pinyin, but the Mandarin pronunciations themselves didn’t exist back then. Just... just accept this. This is one of those quirks of having a non-alphabetic language.
(Here’s an “exceptions” paragraph: there are various well known Chinese names that are typically, even now, transliterated in a non-standard way: Confucius, Mencius, the Yangtze River, Sun Yat-sen, etc. Go ahead and use these if you want. And if you really consciously want to make a Cantonese or Hakka or whatever setting, more power to you, but in that case you better be far beyond needing this tutorial and I don’t know why you’re here. Get. Scoot!)
One last point about names that use the ü with the umlaut over it. The umlaut ü is actually pretty critical for the meaning because wherever the ü appears, the consonant preceding it also can be used with u: lu/lü, nu/nü, etc. However, de facto, lots of individual people, media franchises, etc, simply drop the umlaut and write u instead when writing a name in English, such as “Lu Bu” in the Dynasty Warriors franchise in English (it should be written Lü Bu). And to be fair, since tones are also typically dropped in Latin script and are just as critical to the meaning and pronunciation of the original, dropping the umlaut probably doesn’t make much difference. This is kind of a choice you have to make for yourself. Maybe you even want to play with it! Maybe everybody thinks your character’s surname is pronounced “loo as in loo roll” but SURPRISE MOFO it’s actually lü! You could Do Something with that. Also, in contexts where people want to distinguish between u and ü when typing but don’t have easy access to a keyboard method of making the ü, the typical shorthand is the letter v.
Alright! So you have your surname and you know how you want it spelled using the Latin alphabet. Great! What next?
Alright, so, now we get to the hard part: choosing the given name. No, don’t cry, I know baby I know. We can do this. I believe in you.
Here are some premises we’re going to be operating on, and I’m not entirely sure why I made this a numbered list:
Chinese people, generally, love their kids. (Obviously, like in every culture, there are some awful exceptions, and I’ll give one specific example of this later on.)
As part of loving their kids, they want to give them a Good name.
So what makes a name a Good name??? Well, in Chinese culture, the cultural values (which have changed over time) have tended to prioritize things like: education; clan and family; health and beauty; religious devotions of various religions (Buddhism, Taoism, folk religions, Christianity, other); philosophical beliefs (Buddhism, Confucianism, etc) (see also education); refinement and culture (see also education); moral rectitude; and of course many other things as the individual personally finds important. You’ll notice that education is a big one. If you can’t decide on where to start, something related to education, intelligence, wisdom, knowledge, etc, is a bet that can’t go wrong.
Unlike in English speaking cultures (and I’m going to limit myself to English because we’re writing English and good God look at how long this post is already), there is no canon of “names” in Chinese like there has traditionally been in English. No John, Mary, Susan, Jacob, Maxine, William, and other words that are names and only names and which, historically at least, almost everyone was named. Instead, in Chinese culture, you can basically choose any character you want. You can choose one character, or two characters. (More than two characters? No one can live at that speed. Seriously, do not give your character a given name with more than two characters. If you need this tutorial, you don’t know enough to try it.) Congratulations, it is now a name!!
But what this means is that Chinese names aggressively Mean Something in a way that most English names don’t. You know nature names like Rose and Pearl, and Puritan names like Wrestling, Makepeace, Prudence, Silence, Zeal, and Unity? I mean, yeah, you can technically look up that the name Mary comes from a etymological root meaning bitter, but Mary doesn’t mean bitter in the way that Silence means, well, silence. Chinese names are much much more like the latter, because even though there are some characters that are more common as names than as words, the meaning of the name is still far more upfront than English names.
So the meaning of the name is generally a much more direct expression of those Good Values mentioned before. But it gets more complicated!
Being too direct has, across many eras of Chinese history, been considered crude; the very opposite of the education you’re valuing in the first place. Therefore, rather than the Puritan slap you in the face approach where you just name your kid VIRTUE!, Chinese have typically favoured instead more indirect, related words about these virtues and values, or poetic allusions to same. What might seem like a very blunt, concrete name, such as Guan Yu’s “yu” (which means feather), is actually a poetic, referential name to all the things that feathers evoke: flight, freedom, intellectual broadmindness, protection...
So when you’re choosing a name, you start from the value you want to express, then see where looking up related words in a dictionary gets you until you find something that sounds “like a name”; you can also try researching Chinese art symbolism to get more concrete names. Then, here’s my favourite trick, try combining your fake name with several of the most common surnames: 王,李,陈. And Google that shit. If you find Actual Human Beings with that name: congratulations, at least if you did f/uck up, somebody else out there f/ucked up first and stuck a Human Being with it, so you’re still doing better than they are. High five!
You’re going to stick with the same romanization system (or lack thereof) as you’ve used for the surname. In the interests of time, I’m going to focus on pinyin only.
First let’s take a look at some real and actual Chinese names and talk about what they mean, why they might have been chosen, and also some fictional OC names that I’ve come up with that riff off of these actual Chinese names. And then we’ll go over some resources and also some pitfalls. Hopefully you can learn by example! Fun!!!
Let’s start with two great historical strategists: Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu, and the names I picked for some (fictional) sons of theirs. Then I will be talking about Sun Shangxiang and Guan Yinping, two historical-legendary women of the same era, and what I named their fictional daughters. And finally I’ll be talking about historical Chinese pirate Gan Ning and what I named his fictional wife and fictional daughter. Uh, this could be considered spoilers for my novel Clouds and Rain and associated one-shots in that universe, so you probably want to go and read that work... and its prequels... and leave lots of comments and kudos first and then come back. Don’t worry, I’ll wait.
(I’m just kidding you don’t need to know a thing about my work to find this useful.)
ZHUGE Liang is written 諸葛亮 in traditional Chinese characters and 诸葛亮 in simplified Chinese characters. It is a two-character surname. Two character surnames used to be more common than they are now. When I read Chinese history, I notice that two character surname clans seem to have a bad habit of flying real high and then getting the Icarus treatment if Icarus when his wings melted also got beheaded and had the Nine Familial Exterminations performed on his clan. Yikes. Sooner or later that'll cost ya.
But anyway. Zhuge means “lots of kudzu”, which if you have been to the American south you know is that only way that kudzu comes. Liang means “light, shining” in the sense of daylight, moonlight, etc; and from this literal meaning also such figurative meanings as reveal or clear. (I’m going to talk about words have a primary and secondary meaning in this way because I think it’s important for understanding. It’s just like how in English, ‘run’ has many meanings, but almost of all them are derived from a primary meaning of ‘to move fast via one’s human legs’, if I can be weird for a moment. “Run” as in “home run” comes from that, “run” as in “run in your stocking” comes from that, “run” as in “that’ll run you at least $200″ comes from that. You have to get it straight which is the primary meaning, which is the one that people think of first and they way they get to the secondary meaning.)
“Light” has a similar “enlightenment” concept in Chinese as in English, so the person who chose Zhuge Liang’s name—most likely his father or grandfather—clearly valued learning.
I named my fictional son for Zhuge Liang Zhuge Jing 京. The value or direction I was coming from is that Zhuge Liang has come to the decision that he has to nurture the next generation for the benefit of the land, that he has to remain in the world in a way that he very much did not want to do when he himself was a young man. In this alternate universe, Liu Bei has formed a new Han dynasty and recaptured Luoyang, so when Zhuge Liang’s son is then born he chooses this name Jing which means literally “capital”. This concrete name is meant as an allusion to a devotion to public service and to remaining “central”. After I chose this name, I discovered that Zhuge Liang actually has a recorded grandson named Zhuge Jing with this same character.
above, me, realizing I picked a good name
ZHOU Yu is written 周瑜 in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters.
The surname Zhou was and remains a very common Chinese surname whose original meaning was like... a really nice field. Like just the greatest f/ucking field you’ve ever seen. “Dang, that is a sweet field” said an ancient Chinese farmer, “I’m gonna make a new Chinese character to record just how great it is.” And then it came to mean things along the line of complete and thorough.
Yu means the excellence of a gemstone--its brilliance, lustre, etc, as opposed to its flaws. It is not a common word but does appear in some expressions such as 瑕不掩瑜 "a flaw does not conceal the rest of the gemstone's beauty; a defect does not mean the whole thing is bad".
Zhou Yu has gone down in history for being not only smart but also artistic and handsome. A real triple threat. And this name speaks to a family that valued art and beauty. It really does suit him.
Zhou Yu had two recorded sons but in my alternate history I gave him four. I borrowed the first one’s name from history: Xun 循, follow. Based on this name, I chose other names that I thought gave a similar sense of his values: Shou 守, guard; Wen 聞, listen. The youngest one I had born when he already knew he was dying, and things had not been going well generally; therefore I had him give him the name Shen 慎, which means “careful, cautious”.
SUN Shangxiang 孫尚香 is one of several names that history and legend give for a sister of w//arlord-king Sun Quan who was married to a rival w//arlord named Liu Bei in a marriage which, historically, uh, didn’t... didn’t go all that well. In my alternate history it goes well! You can’t stop me, I’ve already done it!
The surname Sun means “grandson” and the given name components are Shang mean “values, esteems” and Xiang “scent” which we can combine into meaning something like “precious perfume”. A lot of the recorded names for women in this era (a huge number didn’t have any names recorded, a problem in itself) seem to me to be more concrete, to contain more objects, to be more focused on affection, less focused on hopes and dreams. This makes sense for the era: you love your daughters (I HOPE) but then they get married and leave you. You don’t have long term plans for them because their long term belongs to another clan.
I gave her daughter by Liu Bei the name Liu Yitao 劉義桃. Yi 義 meaning righteousness, rectitude and 桃 meaning... peach. Okay, okay, I know "righteous peach" sounds damn funny in English, but the legendary oath in the peach garden, the "oath of brotherhood" is called in Chinese 結義 "tying righteousness" and the peach garden is, uh, a peach garden. I also give her the cutesy nickname Taotao 桃桃 which you could compare to “Peaches” or “Peachy”. Reduplication of a character in a two-character name is a classic nickname strategy in Chinese.
GUAN Yinping 關銀屏/关银屏 is a “made up” (scare quotes because old legends have their own kind of validity, fight me) name for a historical daughter of Guan Yu. Guan means “to close (a door)”. Yin means “silver” and ping means “a screen, to hide” and according to the legend, her father’s oath brother Zhang Fei named her after a silver treasure. So here again we see a name for a woman that completely lacks the kind of aspirations we see in male names. Who would have an aspiration for a daughter?
My fictional characters, that’s who. I named her daughter Lu Ruofeng 陸若鳳/陆若凤, Ruo (like the) Feng (phoenix), based on a quote from a Confucian text about what one should try to be during both times of chaos and times of good government. I portray her father as a devoted Confucian scholar, so that was another factor for why I looked to Confucian texts for a source of a name.
Modern parents also now have big dreams for their daughters :’) and so modern girls receive names that are far more similar to how boys are named.
GAN Ning 甘寧/甘宁 is a great example of a person whose name does not suit him. Gan 甘 depicts a tongue and means “sweet”, and Ning 寧 which shows a bowl and table and heart beneath a roof means “peaceful”. Which, it would be hard to come up with a name for this guy, a ruthless pirate turned extremely effective general:
that is less suitable than essentially being named “Sweet Peace”.
And when he was an adult, his style name—a name that Chinese men used to be given when they turned 20 (ie became adults) by East Asian reckoning—indeed reflects that. Choosing your own style name was widely considered to be crass. I absolutely think that Gan Ning chose his own style name; he was that kind of a guy. And the name he chose! Xingba 興霸/兴霸! I’ve never seen another style name like it. It means, basically, “thriving dominator”! Brand new official adult Gan Ning treats his style name like he’s picking his Xbox gamer tag and he picks BadassBoss69_420, that’s what this style name is like to me. Except, you know, he had almost certainly killed many hundreds of people by the time he was nineteen, so, uh, it wouldn’t be a wise idea to make fun of his name to his face.
In my fictional version of his life, he married a woman whose father was the exception to the “parents love their children” rule and who named his daughter Pandi 盼第 “expecting a younger brother”, which is a classic “daughters ain’t shit, I want a son” name. Real and actual Chinese women have been given this shitty name and ones like it.
Because Gan Ning had an ironically placid name, I also gave his daughter the placid single character name Wan 婉, which means “gentle, restrained”, as a foil to her wild personality.
So there are a bunch of examples of some historical characters and some OCs and how I chose their names. “But wait, all that was really cool, but how can I do that? You can read Chinese, I can’t!”
I originally had a bunch of links here to dictionaries and resources but Tumblr :) wouldn’t let the post show up in tag search with all the links :) :) :) so you need to check the reblogs of this post to see my own reblog; that reblog has all the links. I’M SORRY ABOUT THIS. Here are a list of the sites without the links if you want to Google them yourself.
MDBG - an open source dictionary - start here
Wiktionary - don’t knock it til you try it
iCIBA (they recently changed their user interface and it’s much less English-speaker friendly now but it’s still a great dictionary)
Pleco (an iOS app, maybe also Android???) contains same open source dictionary as MDBG and also its own proprietary dictionary
Chinese Etymology at hanziyuan dot net
You search some English keywords from the value you want, and then you see what kind of characters you get. You should take the character and then reverse search, making sure that it doesn’t have negative words/meanings, and similar. Look into the etymology and see if it has any thematic elements that appeal to what you’re doing with the character--eg a fire radical for a character with fire powers.
And then, like I mention before, when you have got a couple characters and you think “I think this could be a good name”, you go to Google, you take a very common surname, you append your chosen name—don’t forget to use quotation marks—and you see what happens. Did you get some results? Even better, did you get lots of results? Then you’re probably safe! No results does not necessarily mean your name won’t work, but you should probably run it by an Actual Chinese Native Speaker at that point to check. Also, remember, as I said at the beginning, sometimes people have weird names. If you consciously decide “you know what, I think this character’s parents would choose a weird name”, then own that.
THINGS YOU SHOULD PROBABLY IGNORE!
Starting in relatively recent history (not really a big thing until Song dynasty) and continuing, moreso outside of mainland China, to the modern day, there is something called a generation name component to a name. This means that of a name’s two characters, one of the characters is shared with every other paternal line relative of that person’s generation; historically, usually only boys get a generation name and girls don’t. (Chinese history, banging on pots and pans: DAUGHTERS AIN’T SHIT AND DON’T FORGET IT!) “Generation” here means everyone who is equidistant descendant from some past ancestor, not necessarily that they are exactly the same age. For example, all of ancestor’s X’s sons share the character 一 in their names, his grandsons all have the character 二,great-grandsons 三, great-great-grandsons 四 (I just used numbers because I’m lazy). By the time you get to great-great-grandson, you might have some that are forty years old and some that are babies (because of how old their fathers were when they were conceived), but they are still the same generation.
In some clans, this tradition goes so far as to have something called a name poem, where the generations cycle, character by character, through a poem that was specifically written for this purpose and which is generally about how their clan is super rad.
If you want to riff off of this idea and have siblings or paternal cousins share a character in their names, ok, but it genuinely isn’t necessary. Anyone with a single character name obviously doesn’t have one of these generation names, and by no means does every person with a two character name (especially female) have a generation name. If you’re doing an OC for an ancient Chinese setting (certainly anything before the year about 500), you shouldn’t use these generation names because it wasn’t a thing. Also, in a modern setting, even if such a generation name or name poem exists, it’s not like there is any legal requirement to use it (though there may be family pressure to do so).
As a further complication, some parents do the shared character thing among their children without it actually being a generation name per se because it isn’t shared by any cousins. Or, they have all their children (or all their children of the same gender) share a radical, which is a meaning component in a Chinese character.
If someone does have one of these shared character names, then their nickname will never come from that shared character; either they will be called by the full name or by some name riffing off of the character that is not shared. For example, I knew a pair of sisters called Yuru and Yufei with the same first character; the first sister went by her English name in daily life (even when speaking Chinese) while the second sister was called Feifei.
tl;dr If you don’t already know Chinese, consider generation names an extra complication for masochists only. Definitely not required for modern characters.
Fortune telling is another thing that I think you should either ignore or wildly make up. Do you know what ordinary Chinese people who want to choose a lucky name for their child do? They hire someone to work it out. This is not some DIY shit even if you are deeply immured in the culture. There are considerations of the number of strokes, the radicals, the birth date, the birth hour. You’re the god of your fictional universe, so go ahead and unilaterally declare that your desired names are lucky or unlucky as suits the story if you want to.
MILK NAMES

In modern times, babies get named right away, if for no other reason that the government requires it everywhere in the world for record keeping purposes.
However, in traditional times, Chinese people did not give babies a permanent name right away, instead waiting until a certain period of time had passed (3 months/100 days is a classic).
What do you call the baby in the meantime? A milk name 乳名, which your (close, older than you) family may or may not keep on using for you until such time as you die, just so that you remember that you used to be a funny looking little raisin that peed on people.
This kind of name is almost always very humble, sometimes to the point of being outright insulting. This is because to use any name on your baby that implies you might actually like the little thing is tempting Bad News. Possible exception: sometimes a baby would receive a milk name that dedicated it to some deity. In this case, I guess you’re hoping that deity will be flattered enough to take on the job of shooing away all the other spirits and things that might be otherwise attracted to this Delicious Fresh Baby.
Because milk names were only used by one’s (older) family and very close family friends of one’s parents/grandparents, most people’s milk names are not recorded or known, with some notable exceptions. Liu Shan, the son of Liu Bei, who as a baby was rescued by Zhao Yun during the Shu forces retreat from Changban. Perhaps because his big debut in history/legend was as a baby, he is well-known for his milk name A-Dou 阿斗, which means, essentially, Dipper.
If you’re writing a story, you really only need to worry about a milk name for your character if it’s a historical (or pseudohistorical) setting, and even then only if the character either makes an appearance as a small infant or you consciously decide to have them interact with characters who knew them well as a small child and choose to continue using the milk name. Not all parents, etc who could use the milk name with a youth or an adult actually did so.
Here are some milk names I’ve come up with in my fiction: Little Mouse/Xiaoshu 小鼠 for a girl, Tadpole/Kedou 蝌蚪 for a boy, and Shouty/A-Yao 阿吆 for a boy. In the first two cases the babies were both smol and quiet (as babies go). The last one neither small nor quiet, ahahaha. 蔷蔷 Qiangqiang, which is a pretty enough name meaning “wild rose” (duplication to make it lighter), except the baby is a boy, so this is the typical idea that making a boy feminine makes him worth less, which, yikes, but also, historically accurate. Also Xiaohei 小黑 “Blackie” for a work that I will probably never publish because I don’t ever see myself finishing it. I might recycle it to use on another story.
Here are some more milk names I came up with off the cuff for a friend that wanted an insulting milk name. They ended up not using any of these, so feel free to use, no credit necessary. Rongzi 冗子 “Unwanted Child”; Xiaochou 小丑 “Little Ugly”; A-Xu 阿虛 “Empty”; Pangzhu 胖豬 “Fat Pig”; Shasha 傻傻 “Dummy”.
PITFALLS!
Chinese has a lot of homophones. Like, so many, you cannot even believe. That means the potential for puns, double meanings, etc, is off the charts. And this can be bad, real real bad, when it comes to names. It is way too easy to pick a name and think to yourself “wow, this name is great” and then realize later that the name sounds exactly the same as “cat shit” or something even worse.
Some Chinese families live the name choosing life on hard mode because their surname is itself a homonym that can make almost any name sound bad. I’m speaking of course of the poor Wus and Bus of the world. You see Wu may have innocuous and pleasant surnames associated with it, but it also means “without, un-”. (Bu is similar, sounds like “no, not”.) Suddenly, any pleasant name you give your kid, your kid is NOT that thing.
This means picking a name that is pleasant in itself yet also somehow also pleasant when combined with Wu. So you might pick a character with a sound like Ting, Xian, Hui, or Liang - unstopping, unlimited, no regrets, immeasurable. A positive negative name, a kind of paradox. Like I said, this is naming on hard mode.
If you are naming an ancient character, I am going to say in my opinion you should ignore all considerations of sound, because reconstruction of ancient Chinese pronunciations is on some other, other level of pedantic and you just don’t need to do that to yourself.
For modern characters, however, an attractive name, in general, should be a mix of tones and a mix of sounds. As a non-Chinese speaker, basically this means especially if you go for a two character given name, having all three characters start with the same sound, or end with the same sound, can sound kind of tongue twistery and thus silly/stupid. That doesn’t mean that such names never exist, and can in some cases even sound good (or at least memorable), but how likely is it that you’ve found the exception? Not very. (Two out of three having repetition isn’t bad. It’s three out of three you have to be careful of. Something like Wang Fang or Zhou Pengpeng is probably fine; it’s something over the top like Guan Guangguo or Li Lili you want to avoid.)
Just like the West (sigh), in the modern Sinosphere it is widely acceptable for girls to have masculine names but totally unacceptable for boys to have feminine names. If you see the radical 女 which means woman, don’t choose that character for a boy, at least if you’re trying to be realistic. Now Chinese ideas of masculinity doesn’t have the same boundaries as Western ideas, but if you want to play around in those boundaries, you gotta do that research on your own; you’ve left what I can teach you in this already entirely too long tutorial.
Don’t name a character after someone else in story, or after a famous person. In some/many Western cultures, and actually in some Eastern cultures too (Japan is basically fine with this, for example), naming a baby the same name as someone else (a relative, a saint, a famous person, etc), is a respected and popular way to honour that person.
But not in Chinese culture, not now, not a thousand years ago, not two thousand years ago. (Disclaimer: I bet there is some weird rare exception that, eventually, somebody will “gotcha” me with. I am prepared to be amazed and delighted when this occurs.)
Part of this is because of a fundamentally different idea in Chinese culture vs many other cultures about what is valuing vs disrespecting with regard to personal names. The highest respect paid in Chinese history to a category of personal names is to the emperor, and what would happen there is that it would be under name taboo, a very serious and onerous custom where you not only have to not say the emperor’s name, but you can’t say anything that sounds the same as the emperor’s name.
Did I mention that this is in the language of CRAZY GO NUTS numbers of homonyms? The day-to-day troubles caused by observing name taboo were so potentially intense that there are even instances where, before ascending to the imperial throne, the emperor-to-be would change his name to something that was easier to observe taboo about!
So you see this is an attitude that says: if you want to honour and show respect to somebody, you don’t speak their name.
As the highest person in the land, only the emperor gets this extreme level of avoidance, but it trickles down all through society. You can’t use the personal names of people superior to you. Naming a baby after someone inherently throws the hierarchy out of whack. Now you have a young baby with the same name as a grown adult, or even a dead person, who is due honour from their rank in life. People who would not be permitted to use the inspiration’s name may now use that name because they are superior to the baby who received the name! This would mean that hierarchy was not being preserved, and oh my heaven, is there anything worse than hierarchy not being preserved? All of Chinese History: Noooooo!
Now. As an author—and I hope to God no one is using my Chinese name guide as a resource to name an actual human baby because I can’t take that kind of pressure—you can use the names of characters to inspire the names of other characters, in the following way.
Remember that I said that the key, the starting point, to naming someone in Chinese is to start from a value. Okay. So what you do, if as the author you want to draw a thematic connection between two fictional characters, is take the Inspiration character’s name, think about what the value is that caused that name to be chosen, and then go from that value to choose the New Character’s name.
If you’ll recall what I said about Gan Ning and his baby Wan, this is exactly the approach I took. Gan Ning had a placid single character name that belied his violent and outrageous personality; I chose a placid single character name for his similarly wild daughter to make them thematically similar. As an author, I named his baby after him. But within the context of the story, she was not named after him. Does the distinction make sense?
Values also run in families for obvious reasons. It’s very common to look at a family tree and see lots of names that follow a kind of theme and give you a sense that, eg, this family is rather low class and uneducated; this family is very erudite but a bit too fussy about it; this family is really big on Confucianism. So yes, as an author, looking to other characters for inspiration is not a bad idea.
Remember, a lot of times, as an author, you can and even should kick realism to the curb sometimes. If you want to make some Ominous Foreshadowing that Character A’s name is something to do with fire but! They name their child something to do with water and therefore they are destined to clash with their own offspring, gasp, you can do that kind of thing because you are the god of your universe. Relish your power.
Do you have any more questions? Feel free to send a PM or an ask. I hope this was helpful! Go forth and name your Chinese OCs with slightly more confidence!
Edit 22 April 2019: I added some more sections (fortune telling, Milk Names, and taboo on naming after people). I also need to overhaul the entirety of the previous to emphasize that even thought I thoughtlessly used “Chinese” as if it was synonymous with “Han”, there are non-Han Chinese and they can have very different naming customs. Mea culpa.

[Behind-the-Scenes] HELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcase
“HELIOS Rising Heroes: Animation Showcase” is an English voice fan project I worked on all by myself (barring voice actors) that took five months to make.
The original plan was to make just one video, but it ended up being eighteen of them!
Link to YouTube playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0UbdFyWSx0n_ewcd-t0iAB0adGe5lghH
In this write-up, I’ll be discussing details about the response to the project, recording all the footage, video editing, voice acting + audio processing, script translations + rewriting, which fonts were used, and even the emulator used. I’ve organized it into sections to make it easier to find certain things. Also, this is directed to English-speaking readers since I’m not gonna bother translating the entire thing to Japanese.
THE DREAM
I wanted to make this fandub ever since the game was released (in Aug 2020). I just knew that English voices would be extremely fitting to the world of HELIOS with a setting inspired by America and characters, places, and terms mostly in English. I was disappointed to hear that the studio behind the game, Cacalia Studio of Happy Elements K.K., had no interest to localize their games outside of Asia, which meant the chances of an English dub, let alone a global release were close to zero.
I was able to understand how to play the game thanks to the fan translators, some of which came from other Cacalia Studio games, and got inspired to continue learning Japanese (there was a previous attempt to translate Japanese lyrics years back).
What I thought was just the silly dream of one overseas player’s became something much more!
THE TIMELINE (BRIEF OVERVIEW)
I played the game for about two months prior to working on the project. Before starting the project, I had to sort out graphical and technical issues on my end first as I was unable to play the game smoothly until November.
November 2020
Finding all the in-game battle lines
Writing transliterations (romaji) of lines by ear
Learning and translating lines to Japanese
Started recording footage
December 2020
Further translation revisions
Held a casting call
Script rewriting and finalizing
January 2021
Completed casting
Started video editing (learning process)
Started audio processing
Recorded more footage
February 2021
Recorded more footage
Japanese script revisions
Finished working with VAs
Finished audio processing
Continued video editing
Published Preview video
March 2021
Recorded the last of the footage
Japanese subtitle revisions
Finished Showcase video
Finished Individual battle clips
Gave recommendations to VAs
The exact start and end dates were Nov 1st, 2020 to March 31st, 2021. Pretty neat.
RESPONSE TO THE PROJECT
I was absolutely shocked with the response to the preview video, which at the time of writing has just hit 10K views and almost 600 likes on Twitter and YouTube combined. Not bad for an unpaid hobby fandub (a joke only I find funny...) of an otherwise “niche” Japanese-only mobile game.
As of Apr 4th, 2021 - Thank you so much. This is more than I could’ve asked for.
The preview video blew up way more than anticipated, setting up for a bit of disappointment when the Showcase video was released.
The amount of views I expected for this project within its prime were a couple hundred views, so I’m content that the Showcase video reached that amount (it had ~500 by the end of March).
The expectations for the battle clips were an average of 100 views and a handful of likes - and each one got roughly that amount (or more) - so I’m also content with that, especially for something that’s just “bonus material”.
I tried my best to promote this project on Twitter with three main tweets. My one regret with promoting the project was making the second tweet after publishing the Showcase because the Japanese I wrote there was pretty terrible (as I was all worn out from editing and was in a haste to tweet about it). I tried to make up for it in a follow-up reply the next day, but it was too late. I was satisfied with how my third and final tweet and thread of battle clips turned out, but it sadly didn’t garner much attention. A reason for this was probably due to bad timing. I knew that the timing of the last tweet was awful as HeliosR did something special for April Fools’ day, plus the Easter event was being hyped around the same time, but I really wanted to finish up the project within March (my timezone, at least. It was already April 1st in Japan).
It was important to also make the videos accessible to the Japanese audience as they were a large portion of the viewers. This proved to be a challenge as my knowledge of Japanese is limited - at least for me, it’s easier to translate grammar-correct Japanese than it is to write my own sentences.
I ultimately decided against posting any of the videos on NicoNico because I wasn’t sure about Japan’s laws regarding copyrighted material. I knew it was already risky enough posting on social media and didn’t want to take any additional risks.
ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (1) – HEROES & ATTACK ORDER
HeliosR uses a gacha system, so to be able to even make something like this, you’d first need access to all 16 ★4 OG Heroes in the game.
I had them spread across five different accounts, four of which were reroll accounts. Asakou from the Cacalia RPG server gave me two of those accounts, and I rerolled myself for Keith and Ren during their Birthday Orders (one free 10-pull per account). Every account is also given a free ★4 selector ticket which I made good use of.
3,000 rubies (in-game currency) were sacrificed to pity the ★4 OG Dino when he was released in December just for the sake of the fandub!
Besides covering all of the Heroes, I also needed to play through each account to unlock certain story chapters, event stages, and evolve the Heroes for their shiny evolved CG art. Some of the Expert event stages (that had the Nighttime backgrounds) proved difficult to clear with a new account.
When using skills, the order of the Heroes were edited such that everyone was able to have the majority of their lines used at least once. All Heroes had two “receiving support” lines, two or three “supporting” lines, and two or three “skills against the enemy” lines. Some of the extra lines didn’t make it into the Showcase, so they were used for the individual clips instead.
I should’ve used Gray instead of Marion for the account that had Billy because you can see Marion’s sprite in Billy’s image. xD
In the Showcase, you may notice that the "Union Attacks" consist of all the ★4 CG images. These were spliced together; I never had all four Heroes of the same sector on the same account. For example, I would have Gray, Asch, and Jay on one account and Billy on another account, recorded their ★4 Bursts separately using the same background (from unlocking the Expert stages on both accounts), and then edited all the footage together.
Jay’s Burst was later re-recorded with a different attacking order so that he wouldn’t link to Billy.
It was also important to keep the same order of Bursts as well as use all four Bursts in the same turn. The ★4 Burst order was usually determined by who didn’t link skill with one another (with the exception of East sector as I was still figuring things out) because I didn’t want the link skill activation getting in the way of the animations.
As a little bonus, I also showed off the exclusive damaging skills of the Chapter 6 and 7 ★4 frames that I was lucky enough to pull from the gacha: Marion’s "Invitation To The Dance“ (roses), Faith’s “Synthetic Vibes” (beats), and Dino’s “Crow Mark Dead End” (claw marks).
ABOUT THE FOOTAGE (2) - BACKGROUNDS
Since I didn’t want to use the same battle music and backgrounds for all of the videos, I decided to use some of the themes from the limited-time events which went as far back as Nov 2020.
Each background has three variants (Daytime, Afternoon, Nighttime) and so I carefully picked them based on the colours. I ended up using mostly Expert stages - or Nighttime backgrounds, since Daytime versions were only used for Normal difficulty stages (which are too easy to clear).
The backgrounds used for the Showcase, all from limited-time events.
I decided to mix up some of the Heroes from other sectors in the individual clips for fun, basing it off of their relationships with each other. Using South sector’s background for Gast’s clip was a purposeful choice because I already used the North sector’s background for the other three North sector Heroes. I made sure to include Akira and Will of the South sector in Gast’s clip so it didn’t feel too random!
The only default background I didn’t use was Chapter 2’s because I already made use of the Casino theme for OG West sector’s individual clips. (...Plus I didn’t really like that background :p)
Here’s a list of all the backgrounds I used:
Escape the Prison (Nov 2020) - used for Showcase [EAST]
Mission of CASINO (Nov 2020) - used for Junior, Faith, & Keith clips
HAPPY NEW YEAR SHOW! (Jan 2021) - used for Showcase [SOUTH]
Help! Cooking Hero! (Jan 2021) - used for Will and Oscar clips
A Sweet Spell Garnished With Chocolate (Feb 2021) - used for Showcase [WEST]
Grandiose Chinoiserie (Mar 2021) - used for Showcase [NORTH]
The Hero Is A Detective!? (Mar 2021) - used for Billy and Jay clips
Default backgrounds: Chapters 1, 3, 4 (shared with 7), 5 (shared with 6) - used for all other clips
The Christmas event was the only event that went unused during the Nov 2020 - Mar 2021 period.
I didn’t record the East sector event (Christmas) in Dec 2020 because I was actually too busy with the casting call! I also didn’t think I would make use of it after already recording the Prison event intended for East sector. The project ended up taking so long that it actually benefited from having a wider selection of events over the months, which also showcased the beauty of the game.
ABOUT THE WORK & VIDEO EDITING
Hardware:
A decent computer.
A pair of no-name earbuds I found while cleaning out some junk.
Software:
All FREE!
*There’s a catch
NoxPlayer* emulator (debloated, read more about in its own section) and Open Broadcast Studio were used to record game footage and sounds.
Davinci Resolve was the main tool I used to edit the videos. A very demanding program that I only recommend using if you have a mid to high end computer.
MediBang was used to edit some of the art like the logos, but I ended up using Resolve for the majority of the graphics, including the thumbnails.
Audacity and Cakewalk were used to edit audio.
Many aspects for this project took longer than I had hoped because there was a learning process with using Resolve for the first time. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, re-exporting videos tons of times just to fix small mistakes. Lastly, the time it took to make all the fancy effects was longer than I’d estimated. As the project dragged on, there was pressure to not delay the release of the videos any longer than I had to. A lot of this was self-imposed though.
There were days where I just did something else other than work on the project, which helped re-fuel my motivation when I decided to pick it up again.
Pretty much everything in the videos were taken from the game itself. The only graphics that were taken from the official website instead were the Substance symbols (the pictures with HERO at the bottom).
Additional overlay graphics were custom-made. It took two whole days to make the 3-second long sector intros and another two days to create and animate the arrow graphics for the credits. These were made using Resolve’s fusion and colour features. Much of the edit was inspired by the official HeliosR designs.
Left: Official in-game graphics // Right: My fanmade video (sector intros)
Sector intros were inspired by the four Heroes version of Union Attacks in-game.
Left: Official HeliosR video // Right: My fanmade video
The Preview video took after the ★4 Burst mini-previews as part of HeliosR’s promotional campaign, uploaded before the game was released.
Left: Official HeliosR video // Right: My fanmade video
The credits at the end of the Showcase were inspired by a different video, this time being the Half-Anniversary video.
The Showcase - which had a duration of 29:07 - was 11.5GB large in size. It took almost three hours to render (which I re-rendered to fix things) and two DAYS to upload to YouTube because I experienced multiple uploading interruptions. It’s a good thing you can re-upload the same video to continue where you left off without having to restart the entire process.
The individual hero clips didn’t take as long to make (but they took a while anyway as I re-uploaded some of them to fix minor mistakes). The recommendations for the VAs that were given alongside the publishing of each clip also spanned over another five days as I wanted to personalize and think about each one carefully.
A pretty frustrating part of the project was the prevalent lag when recording footage, which may have been due to the emulator and/or some technical things on my end. The Prison event used for the Showcase was the very first one I recorded when I wasn’t as aware about the lag, and so it suffered a bit as a result. The Union Attacks were the worst offender. I re-recorded the same battle scenes several times each just in case, then went through the footage frame-by-frame in Resolve and chose the ones with the least amount of lag. If all of the recorded footage suffered lag at different parts, I would even compare and splice together parts of them that didn’t lag. There was also audio lag (a known issue of NoxPlayer) so I had to move all of the audio forward by 1/3 of a second.
By the end of the project I had over 200 videos of game footage with a total size of over 24GB and a total duration exceeding 9 hours, not even counting all the ones that went unused.
The Heroes weren’t the only ones who evolved. MS Paint not recommended for thumbnails.
Overall, (despite the few mistakes here and there that nobody other than me would notice) I was happy with how everything turned out, down to the gorgeous thumbnails! I am an artist, after all~ :^)
I also have much more respect for video editors. They should be called VIDEO ANIMATORS!
ABOUT THE VOICES & AUDIO PROCESSING
When making a dub, it doesn’t mean we want to replace or best the original language, we just want to give it a new interpretation. In fact, the characters’ voice descriptions and direction provided in the scripts were heavily inspired by the seiyuu (Japanese VAs) and how they performed their lines.
Honestly, this was THE dream cast!! Some of the VAs had comparably similar voices to the Japanese ones which was an amazing coincidence. The ones that may not have sounded as similar had unique interpretations that I felt still suited their characters well. I also chose actors based on their performance, and everyone delivered!
Voice actors were not expected to imitate the Japanese voices and lines. They were provided direction and reference videos to help time their lines, but were otherwise given liberty when it came to their own interpretations.
You shouldn’t hear any jarring differences between the voice actors’ microphones and setups. That’s because I took the time to process the audio. Faith’s audio was submitted to me post-processed so it was used as a guideline for what the audio quality should sound like. Some of the others had comparable quality to Faith’s, so I only added compression to balance their volumes. Most of them benefited from equalization of various levels - this took some experimenting back and forth with the frequency spectrum. Lastly, a couple more benefited from clip fixing, noise gate, de-essing and/or click removal. It was very important for VAs to have at least decent room treatment; while small differences between mic frequencies can always be altered, echoes are difficult if not impossible to remove completely.
I feel that audio engineering is highly underrated and more important than ever as voice actors continue to record from home studios.
And in case it wasn’t already clear, this was purely voluntary work. No VAs or myself were paid to contribute anything for the project. Though, the experience alone was worth more than any amount of money.
ABOUT THE SCRIPT & TRANSLATIONS
HELIOS Rising Heroes「エリオスR」English Translation - Battle Lines
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ImWrAfvS_hgp6qr5qt30vCP63uHEk2o79uqY0h-3wL4/edit?usp=sharing
This spreadsheet consists of the literal translations for all the battle lines I could find in the game (it still isn’t done -yet-, plan to finish it when I get the chance). These are only fanmade and are not guaranteed to be accurate, especially as I wasn’t able to find another translator to help or proofread it.
After translating the lines, I made many additional revisions from the literal meanings such as changing the intention of the line slightly to flow better, having extra words added in to provide more context, or changing them completely. Thus, the lines used in the video are NOT literal TLs!
Another thing of note that may not seem apparent, but is what I feel an important aspect of character writing, is to remain completely unbiased towards all the characters. Personal favourites aside, I ensured that every Hero had their own spotlight as well as lines written in a way that remained faithful to their personality, no matter how unlikeable they were (looking at you, Asch Albright).
Even after giving voice actors their scripts, I made another revision in February after the release of the aforementioned Half-Anniversary video with the transcriptions for the ★4 Bursts, which is when I discovered a couple of mistakes with my transcriptions. This resulted in me having to edit out a part of one of the voice actors’ lines (Billy’s “String Show” line in his ★4 Burst) because of a translation mistake! I’m really glad I was able to double-check the correct lines before releasing the Preview video, or it would’ve looked pretty silly to Japanese viewers.
The last set of revisions were just minor edits to the subtitles (such as using kanji instead of kana) while I was working on subtitling all the videos.
Notable changes included:
WILL SPROUT
During attacking combo
Original line:
tanonda zo... ike! / “Counting on you... Reach!”
Rewritten line:
“I’ll become stronger... For everyone!”
The rewritten line is a condensed version of one of Will’s ★4 Evolved CG lines (“For everyone... I’ll become more and more stronger!”). He had “Reach!” in both his attacking combo and regular Burst, so I gave him an extra unique line.
★4 Burst
Original line:
warui kedo... kore de oshimai da! / “Sorry, but... it ends with this!”
Rewritten line:
“I’m sorry, but... it’s over for you! HAAAH!”
There were a couple of oversights I made with the script, and this was one of them that didn’t fit the animation properly. Props to Ryan for coming up with the extra shout at the end! So yeah, we kinda winged this line.
OSCAR BALE
When using skills against the enemy, during attacking combo, and in the ★4 Burst (repeat line)
Original line:
osoi! / “Slow!”
Rewritten lines:
“Too slow!” / “You’re slow!” / “Over here!”
Rewritten simply because I wanted to minimize repeated lines and change things up.
GAST ADLER
When supporting an ally, and during attacking combo
Original lines:
tetsudau ze / “I’ll help (you).”
itchouagari / “All done.”
Rewritten lines:
“I’ve got your six.”
“Target eliminated.”
I wanted to add in a few military terms to reflect Gast’s background.
FAITH BEAMS
★4 CG line (for the credits)
Original line (literal TL):
“It’s not terrible or evil, right? Surely this isn’t punishing... I guess?”
Rewritten line (with “mistake”):
“I’m not doing anything horrible or evil, alright? This is just business as usual... I suppose?”
Faith’s CG line had a mistake when I first translated and handed it off to his actor. I accidentally wrote “oshigoto” (work/business) instead of “oshioki” (punishment). The original has him pretty much saying the same thing twice anyway, so I would say the intention was still retained.
KEITH MAX
When supporting an ally
Original line:
gambare yo~ / “Do your best~.” or “Hang in there~.”
Rewritten line:
“Stay alive, would ya~?”
I know Keith’s meant to say “serious” things in a sarcastic or snarky way, but I just had to add in this fun line!
DINO ALBANI
Using skills against the enemy
Original lines:
haa! / “Haah!”
hei! / “Hey!”
Rewritten lines:
“I can do this!”
“Leave it to me!”
The Japanese lines for Dino’s offensive skills were rather basic, with the third and unchanged line “Here goes!” being a repeat line Dino also says when attacking. I wanted to give him some more lines - as standard as they are - to show his personality a bit more, along with having an additional fun West sector interaction. The changes fit the animations better too. (I actually had his VA say the "Haah!" line, but ended up using a different take of “Here goes!” in place of it.)
ABOUT THE FONTS
Fonts were taken from various sources and were either FREE for personal use or had an open font license. I didn’t have access to the commercial fonts (such as Futura) used in-game, so these were the following fonts I made use of:
Techna Sans looked similar enough to Futura when capitalized, and still looked decent in lowercase.
Jost* is a font that was derived from Futura. Some of its uppercase letters are sharper than Futura's, but it worked pretty well for the text in the credits.
Gau Font Over Drive was used for the ANIMATION SHOWCASE text.
Gen Jyuu Gothic LP was used for the majority of the Japanese text and its English letters were also used for the battle clip subtitles on Twitter.
Meiryo UI (default font) was used for the Preview videos’ subtitles.
Noto Serif JP (default Google font) was used for the serif Japanese text in the credits.
ABOUT NOXPLAYER ANDROID EMULATOR
ETA: AS OF VERSION 1.1.18 (04/23/21), EMULATORS NO LONGER WORK WITH HELIOSR (AS WELL AS OTHER CACALIA STUDIO GAMES). THE BELOW INFORMATION IS OUTDATED.
If, for whatever reason you’re interested in using NoxPlayer, you should take caution when installing it onto your machine. I don’t advocate for or recommend installing Nox. I had to resort to emulation so that I could record the footage and sounds directly from my computer using OBS. The reason why I used Nox specifically is because Cacalia Studio doesn’t like emulators, blocking most of them from running their games. I found further instructions on how to run the game in Nox from the Cacalia RPG Discord (via Twitter @HeliosR_en).
First, not all Nox versions are safe. It should only be installed from the official website, Bignox. More recent versions (I believe from 6.3.0.6 and up) may contain malware such as Segurazo and Chromium packaged with the installer which can be annoying to remove. The version of Nox I used was 6.3.0.0 (you can install older versions, then just don’t update it), which has Android 7 and doesn’t contain packaged malware (AFAIK).
Second, NoxPlayer may be “free” to use, but it comes with bloatware and profits off of its users’ data by collecting and sending it to many different servers. The below guide is what I used to debloat Nox and minimize communication to these servers. Scroll down the comments for additional domains to add to the hosts file.

This is another good guide that makes use of command prompt to remove additional bloatware from the emulator.

ENDING NOTES (TL;DR)
Images of the first and last video for the HeliosR project. We’ve come full circle!
One very tired and average person decided to translate, script, cast, direct, and edit an ambitious project all by herself using only FREE tools, and ended up taking too long to finish it. But at least she finished it, right?
Translators = RESPECT
Voice actors = RESPECT

Audio engineers = R E S P E C T (their work is especially behind-the-scenes)
Hell, I even like Asch now.
During my time working on this, there was one question I always had in mind: “What would the fans want?”
I hope this follow-up has given you a bit of insight into the makings of the HeliosR project. Thank you for reading!

Spiritual Spoiled Brats
Bible study time! Just try and follow along this morning if you can. Good luck with this one. I've been trying to render my observations out into this status out over the last several hours. Still unsure if I managed to articulate it properly. LOL
First starting with what I was reading here:
https://www.wildbranch.org/teachings/hebrew-greek-mind/lesson8.html
The above link is very good read, as is the entire series by Brad Scott. You can find the 13 part series at his Wildbranch Ministries website (wildbranch.org), under the heading "Teachings" and the subheading titled "Hebrew vs Greek Mind". It is a very deep dive study into how the origins of the words and meanings as they would have been originally spoken, versus how the Greek way of thinking has, over time, altered the meaning of language through an entirely different way of perceiving meanings of words. (Greek ≠ Abstract / Hebrew ≠Tangible). I would recommend it for anyone who might be interested in seeing how the Greeks/Romans of the time, were able to dominate Hebrew/Judaic culture, along with many, many other cultures in ancient times and conquer them in a way that was ultimately more effective than warfare; which was to change/alter their language, and change the meaning of words to fit their Greek mindset and worldview. The pen is truly mightier than the sword.
This got me thinking about the differences between modern day Christianity and how they generally view scripture, versus how those of us who have drifted away from that mindset view it, and how those differences shape our individual spiritual convictions.
In particular, this quote from the link above by Mr. Brad Scott, in my opinion, gives a good example of one of the differences:
"To the scripturally spiritual man the other world is the reward, not the goal."
So that makes me ask, "okay, is that a Biblical principle? What does he mean by "scripturally spiritual man"? Does the Bible say how we are rewarded and/or what our "goal" is? If so, then why/how would one be rewarded according to the scriptures? What is the difference between having a goal, and getting a reward? Are we all rewarded, and are there different rewards? What do Christians say our reward is (not individual Christians, more, those who are Christian leaders/denominations)?
After answering those questions for myself through searching the scriptures, it brought me first to this general observation. Just my opinion, not directed toward any particular person, denomination, etc...
Conservatives in this country in general roundly object to when children are given rewards without earning it (winning), just because they happened to be present; many consider children who get rewarded without being found worthy of reward as being spoiled. Yet at the same time, the prevalently accepted spiritual belief system in Christianity does exactly that. It claims that you only need to have "belief" of worthiness (ie: accepting Christ in your heart, aka, "grace through faith") in order to reap the rewards. And while, I agree, that those who perhaps have become martyrs and died as a result of professing that belief will certainly be rewarded for that devotion, that in itself is "action/works + faith": ie: "proof" of their belief. Works + Faith. Being slaughtered by someone because you would rather die than denounce your love for Yeshua (Jesus) would be the ultimate "work". However, at least as of now, the majority of Western Christians (not all, but many) have not had their devotion tested to the point of actual martyrdom, and even then, I suspect, many would still be found "lukewarm", based upon their unwillingness to sacrifice personal comforts in order to live according to the "how", the actual instructions that the Scriptures inform us that God himself commanded us to live. Ultimately, God knows our hearts, yes. But are you willing to take the chance that your own heart has been tempted astray by false teachings that might incur His wrath when judgement comes? I know I am not. And I refuse to entrust my own salvation to any pastor, preacher, teacher, organization, institution, religion, tradition, interpretation, culture, practice, or society which thinks it is free to add to or take away a single word of the Scriptures in order to accommodate and excuse their own personal preferences, philosophies, or traditions. God was pretty clear on what he thought of those who preferred traditions of men over the instructions he sat down for us.
Consider our "Participation Trophy" culture of entitlement. Christianity itself is a "Participation Trophy" Religion. "You don't have to "do" anything--- EVERYONE gets salvation!" Suddenly "Jesus" turns into "Oprah", handing out salvation to anyone who simply happens to be in the room at the time, cheering for their own selfish desire, without any other stipulations.
Is that what the Bible actually says though?
I find it ironic that on one hand, Conservatives roundly condemn Liberal thinking based on how all that matters is intention, while at the same time, using the same logic to explain how they are saved based strictly upon grace through faith alone, and entirely leaving out the fruit of the spirit and the works that the FRUIT produces.
But first, let's study out the word "FRUIT" so we can find out what the original intended meaning of what "Fruit" is according to how the ancient Hebrew authors of the Bible, and those who lived at the time it was written would have understood it to mean and what that applied to, so we can better understand how that would have been relevant then, and why I believe it is relevant even until now. The English word "fruit" in Hebrew is spelled "פרי", which is "pry" in modern Hebrew (transliterated), and pronounced "per-ee/pr-ee" in English. (Keep in mind, Hebrew is read from Right to Left, which can be confusing to English readers.) The origin of the modern Hebrew letters, " פרי " starting from the first symbol from right to left, if we break it down into their ancient pictographic Hebrew meanings would be: פ (pey) meaning "mouth", "word", or "speak", ר (resh) means "head of", "beginning of/heart of" and י (yod/yud) means "arm/hand", or "work". So fruit, means what you say and what you do, according to your head (heart).
John 14:15- "If you love me you will obey my commandments". What commandments? How do you obey them if you do not know what they are? Would you be considered obedient to Yah's commandments if you only confess things with words without actions that prove it? In conclusion, I realize this is going to be a very unpopular opinion, nonetheless, I will be totally blunt: Our modern day Judeo/Christian culture has turned us into spiritual spoiled brats.
I myself, have lived most of my life as a spoiled brat, and in many ways am still a spoiled brat. But that is in part, why I am so convicted to pursue righteousness.
Proverbs 21:21
"He who pursues righteousness and loving-commitment Finds life, righteousness and esteem."
Mattithyahu (Matthew) 16:24, 27
24 "Then יהושע said to His taught ones, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his stake, and follow Me."
27 "For the Son of Aḏam is going to come in the esteem of His Father with His messengers, and then He shall reward each according to his works."
Shabbat Shalom, Ya'll!

xia talks about 绅探 | detective l

— where i’ve been watching detective l: eng sub (YT) || raws (maplestage)
— so i’ve finally made my way thru all 8 eps that have been released thus far. i know some people have been asking for my opinion, so here’s a post that’s meant to hopefully sum up everything i’ve been feeling about this show, personally. any spoilers in my review are very minor!
if you’re not familiar with the show, it’s a sherlock holmes inspired mystery/crime show set in the shanghai french concession during the republican period, starring bai yu, you jingru, and ji chen. at the moment, the show’s at a 7.3/10 on douban, and it was trending at #5 for web-series, so it’s definitely enjoying popularity.
disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion — no matter how i feel about the show, i heavily encourage everyone to check it out for themselves before coming to a conclusion!
+ setting
you know, if there’s one thing i do dig about this show (in theory), it’s the setting. while i’m not a big fan of the set, for reasons i’ll go into below, i think the time period lends itself to some interesting setups and unique cases. as mentioned, it takes place in the republican period in shanghai’s french concession. if i had to guess, it takes place in the 30′s — but my chinese history is shaky, and this is entirely based on some throwaway details mentioned in later cases. suffice it to say that it's a pretty cool setting, and while i was skeptical at first, i did find myself getting into it.
+ characters
another thing i like about the show is the character concepts — in theory, if not always in practice. we have a kind of triumvirate in the main trio.
first, we have luo fei, the sherlock of the series and arguably its main character, who serves as a consulting detective for the shanghai police department. while he’s occasionally (mostly accidentally) an asshole, he’s generally likable and a far cry from the more eccentric/socially inept portrayals of sherlock holmes in modern adaptations. we start seeing a hint of his backstory in recent episodes, and cases soon start getting tied into his feud with an elusive “captain,” likely the show’s moriarty.
next, we have qin xiaoman, a rookie officer newly assigned to the dept, who has a fiesty temper and a fierce passion for making sure justice is served. in an enjoyable twist, she’s generally the one that does the heavy lifting: chasing perps down, aiming down sights, slamming suspects to the ground — she also soon learns to make deductions of her own, as well.
finally, we have........................benjamin (本杰明). his name / its transliteration makes me laugh a little bit whenever i see it, so generally i just refer to the poor guy as ben. anyway, he’s a reserved forensic examiner who also serves as the department’s forensic analyst — he pretty much lives in the morgue, and is more comfortable with the dead than with the living. (also, he has a pretty cute bromance with luo fei...) his backstory’s interesting, and i like his character a lot because it plays perfectly off of the other two’s preexisting dynamic — here’s hoping that he gets more screentime and development!
(ot3? ot3.)
+ cases
there are mixed opinions about the cases, but my personal take is that they’re pretty enjoyable to watch. while they’re not super hard to figure out / generally don’t have a whole lot of killer twists, they’re also not terribly unrealistic. they can get a little convoluted, but such is the eternal curse of mystery shows, i suppose. a lot of the smaller puzzles that luo fei solves are also contingent on some Pretty Chinese elements, which i found very cute (麻雀/麻将, 简谱, to name two). so yeah, they do a pretty okay job of taking classic mystery cases and making them fit in the setting given. more importantly, the process by which they unravel the cases is generally fun to watch, which is really the crucial part of any good mystery/crime show.
that being said, as someone who’s watched quite a few crime shows, i’m entirely not convinced that the writing for the cases is sufficient to keep me watching — even though they’re fun, i haven’t seen much so far that makes me feel like the show’s doing anything different from the usual formula. of course, that’s fine — crime shows don’t need to reinvent the wheel, they just need to make themselves worth watching, one way or another (normally thru character chemistry/acting, etc).
- some familiar sights/sounds...
why did they use the cinemasins stock sound effect multiple times
anyway, that aside, there are obvious nods to sherlock (bbc) — the main theme, luo fei’s initial appearance, the deduction scene in the car...
well, is it plagiarism? i guess not (or well, sina doesn’t think so), but what detective l’s doing here is less reinventing the wheel and more... repainting tires, if you catch my drift.
also, if you’re someone who pays a lot of attention to film ost’s, you’ll be assaulted with a LOT of familiar sounding melodies, be warned. this isn’t necessarily something that detracts from the drama, but it’s definitely something that’s thrown me for a loop / broken my immersion multiple times.
? tone
here’s where i start getting a little hesitant about the show, one of my main gripes: i’m really not sure what kind of tone the show is aiming for. while it’s clearly not a show that takes itself too seriously, and certainly not a dark/hard-boiled noir, occasionally there are moments included where characters rail at, for example, the imperfection/injustice of their supposedly impartial justice system — and while i’m not saying that the show can’t go there, it came off to me as just very thin attempts to increase the show’s depth while also not elaborating on those issues at all. and that’s what’s bothered me the most: the illusion of depth.
i’ll be the first to admit, though, that this is probably because i’m watching this directly after OS, which definitely tackled those issues from the start and had a radically different tone — i just feel like detective l, at least so far, hasn’t settled into one yet, and so i felt like there were some definite moments of tone incongruity / moments when i thought the show would continue with issues it’d raised ... but it didn’t.
- cinematography / lighting
take this with a disclaimer: i think the lighting and design in this show is gorgeous... for stills.
for a moving film? not so much.
i’ve said earlier that i felt like some of the lines felt scripted — but if anything enhances that artificiality, it’s definitely some of the set design. it’s clearly a studio set, and i can’t really begrudge them that part, but some of the lighting is so clearly artificial that it’s been starting to get to me — characters inside a normal room (lit by an innocuously dim overhead lamp) shouldn’t have three separate colors reflecting off their faces like a hobbyist artist’s color study sketches (though it does do a good job of highlighting bai yu’s jawline unnecessarily, in like, every other scene).
they’re clearly trying to create a mood through coloring / lighting, but ... often, i find, it’s at the cost of realism and could definitely be toned down a bit. (i find that over-the-top coloring is pretty common in cdramas, though, so this is probably also very subjective.)
(also, as with most cdramas.. they could probably do with less cgi.)
- acting / directing
alright, i’ll be honest: i’m not a fan of the acting in this.
in my personal opinion, something about the leads’ acting comes off as overly dramatized (esp. in xiaoman’s case) or slightly forced/artificial (in bai yu’s case). this could just be me not really being used to these two actors, but there were multiple times when i was surprised at how overdramatic/unrealistic some lines were delivered. same goes for minor characters, as well — something about the entire show just strikes me as extremely scripted, to the point where it breaks my immersion a lot. this might just be me, though, because i’ve def. heard some praises of the line delivery in this that i couldn’t wrap my mind around: take my words with a grain of salt, i suppose.
(also, of course, i’ve been watching this directly after coming from white deer plain — which has some really down-to-earth acting and a setting/tone that’s worlds apart from detective l. maybe i’m drawing too many direct comparisons: white deer plain definitely has some amazing acting, and it’s a high bar to set, esp for a drama filled with more younger actors.)
directing-wise... i definitely wish i could ask why they made some of the choices they did. while the subs haven’t reached that point yet, there are definitely some cliche tropes that they start throwing in around ep. 6 that heavily detracted from my enjoyment of the show, esp. with the show’s (perhaps over-the-top) use of slow motion at times + (imo) forcing chemistry before it’s had time to develop.
as a result though, i really can’t find myself getting attached to either of the main two (i like ben, probably because he hasn’t had enough screentime for me to be turned off yet, though) — i think that the acting choices for qin xiaoman definitely made her more unlikable for me despite me being a fan of her character in... theory. similarly, luo fei often feels too thin as a character — i’m constantly searching for depth there that i’m not sure i’m finding. so far, while these two are foils, they really feel like nothing more. maybe it’s too early to tell (but hey, i’m a third of the way through, aren’t i?), but i’m definitely finding myself wishing at almost every turn that there was more to the acting there — though they’re definitely being stingy with releasing characters’ backstories / hints to their backstories, which could help contextualize their behavior a little more.
overall: would i recommend it?
my very eloquent answer is... it depends. if you’re looking for a fun mystery romp that doesn’t always take itself too seriously with a unique setting and some interesting cases, then by all means: detective l might be up your alley!
that being said, i think it has a lot of flaws — notably, veteran crime show fans might not find enough flesh on the show’s bones to justify watching it for the cases alone — but if you can overlook them, it’s a fun show to watch: just don’t go in looking for stunning acting or dark moral quandaries.

history of filipino subject
The Filipino languages have been influenced by many other language groups throughout their history, as well as being influenced by each other. Their position in the Pacific Ocean so near Asia has allowed them many opportunities for trade and correspondence with other nations and languages. In addition, various occupations of the region by different nations has brought the Filipino languages in to direct contact with many other languages, which have also had their influence.
The first Indonesians are thought to have come to the Philippines in groups, beginning some 5,000 to 6,000 years ago and again about 1500 B.C. (Bautista). Linguistic evidence connects Tagalog with Bahasa Indonesia as having common roots, so the main root of the modern Filipino languages probably came with these people (although other groups of people are thought to have come to the Philippines much earlier). In addition, the Malay people make up the largest percentage of the population in the Philippines (Bautista). Before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, the people lived in small towns called barangays. The leader of a barangay was called a Datu. Many barangays would cluster together for safety and protection.
The Islam religion was brought to the Philippines in the 14th century (Bautista). It was spread throughout Mindanao and also reached into Manila and Tondo before the Spaniards came to the Philippines and stopped its spread. This spread could have also contributed new words and concepts to the existing languages. Bautista also mentions Sanskrit influences, which also have contributed new words to these languages.
In the 16th Century Spain claimed the Philippines for its own. Many friars and priests were sent by the crown to teach Christianity to the native people. At first, the friars were encouraged to learn the local dialects in order to teach the people in their own languages. This they did, gaining a strong influence over the Filipino people.
Because of these various conditions, the priests were sluggish and hesitant, even in the face of direct orders from the government, to implement Spanish teaching programs in Filipino schools. Being all the way across the ocean and having very slow communication at the time helped them in their attempts to be slow in setting up these things.
When the Filipinos insisted on having equal rights with the rest of the Spanish people, and were not given them, they rebelled against the Spanish government and set up their own republic. At this time Tagalog was not really set up as the national language. However, Rizal, an important Filipino hero at the time who had been killed because of his involvement with the revolution, had brought a lot of attention to Tagalog by writing many papers in Tagalog and writing about the grammar, etc. (Frei, 28-29).
he new Republic of the Philippines did not last long until American occupation began. The Americans began English as the official language of the Philippines. There were many reasons given for this change. Spanish was still not known by very many of the native people. As well, when Taft’s commission (which had been established to continue setting up the government in the Philippines) asked the native people what language they wanted, they asked for English (Frei, 33). In addition, it was hard to conduct government in the native languages because there were so many of them, and a united language was desired.
English began to be taught in the schools to all. For a time, Spanish was still used in many areas, but in time more and more of the people learned English. After many years of not teaching Spanish, those who had known it were older or had passed away, and it was lost as a major influence (although the native dialects continued to use borrowed words from Spanish). For many years, the people of the Philippines were satisfied to simply learn English and adapt to the new system (Frei, )
During World War II, Japan occupied the Philippines for three years (Bautista). At this time English was still the official language of the Philippines, however, Japanese certainly influenced the various dialects during this time as well.
Debates continued back and forth in America and in the Philippines as to whether the official language of the country should be English or one of the other native languages. It was part of the agreement of American occupation that in 1946, the Philippines would become independent of the US again. At that time, Tagalog became the official language of the Philippines, this change having been decided about ten years later and having begun already to be implemented in the educational system.
Even though English is no longer the official language of the Philippines, it continues to be taught today along with Tagalog in the public schools. Several English words have also found their way into Tagalog and other Filipino languages, and are simply conjugated and adjusted to fit the conventions of the languages into which they are adapted. Some examples are the English word "transfer" which is used in some languages to mean "move" (as in "magtransfer kami sa Maynila"–"we are moving to Manila") and the English "adjust" which is used with the same meaning (as in "maaram ko mag-adjust"–"I know how to adjust").
Additionally, the languages of the Philippines continue to borrow words from one another. Since the languages come from a common root anyway, it is often hard to distinguish which words are simply descended from the same roots and which have been borrowed later from another Filipino language. Among both categories, these words do not always have the same meanings in the different languages, in fact, one must be careful not to make embarrassing errors!
Over the course of its development, Tagalog (and other languages of the Philippines) have been influenced by Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, English, and many other languages, in trade and in occupations by various countries. They have taken and adapted words from all of these languages to make them part of their own languages. They have, however, still maintained their own languages, and maintained separations from one language to another.

eleven Origins of eleven Super Mario Characters' Names
The foundation on the Mario series! Would you like to come together or...or from every single other...?!
Mario Bros. is an action game released by Nintendo in 1983.
It is the first game that pre-owned "Mario" inside the distinction. Control Mario or Luigi in order to punch the foes originating out of pipes by below to transform them then and over beat them. In the two player mode, both players are able to decide to come together or even do the job alongside each other and enjoy the game within a myriad of ways.
The "Arcade Archives" sequence has faithfully reproduced a lot of standard Arcade masterpieces.
Players are able to alter various game settings such as game difficulties, plus also reproduce the ambiance of arcade screen options during that time. Players can also participate against one another coming from around the globe with their superior scores.
Please love the masterpiece that made a model for video clip games.
Can you make an a digital movie from a video recording game? That is the doubting that's answered by this specific digital movie. Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, two difficult performing plumbers discover themselves in another universe wherein evolved dinosaurs are now living in medium hi tech squalor. They end up the sole optimism to rescue the planet from invasion.
This is the story of 2 hard working Italian plumber brothers known as Mario Mario in addition to the Luigi Mario, who befriends a paleontologist known as Daisy. She uncovers a tremendous come across of mysterious brand new dinosaur bones. While examining the tunnels wherein dinosaur fossils lay, saboteurs employed by the Mario Bros. competitor businessman, Anthony Scapelli, to stop several underground water lines. Meanwhile, within a hidden planet identified as Dinohattan, King Koopa's land is close to exhausting much of its clean water and running through difficulties so he directs Spike as well as Iggy to kidnap Daisy! The Super Mario Bros. wind up the sole anticipation to rescue the environment at intrusion after that challenge a diabolical lizard king and so they have to fight gigantic reptilian goombas, outwit misfit criminals, and challenge sinister scheme by taking with the world!
Mario and Luigi, two wacky plumbers, take on a daring pursuit to avoid wasting a princess in Dinohattan -- a hidden world in which the occupants grown from dinosaurs! Luigi and Mario deal with lethal challenges from a diabolical lizard king and also should battle gigantic reptilian goombas, outwit misfit thugs, and also ruin a sinister system to take control of the world!
2 Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, must take a trip to yet another dimension to rescue a princess from the evil dictator King Koopa and eliminate him from shooting over the world.
When I discovered that out I did 2 things. To begin with, I whipped out my copy (yes, I keep it which real/nerdy which I continue to have a well used NES connected in the room) of mine and made certain I will be able to beat the game at will. (I can. Childhood not wasted.)
Secondly, I started down a rabbit hole of looking at Mario websites as well as Wikis and Articles. In the operation, I stumbled upon the etymologies of the labels of a number of the main players in the Mario universe. Consequently, in honor of the video game that changed the globe, in this article they're, given in handy 11 item list form.
Mario.
When Mario debuted to the arcade game "Donkey Kong", he was just known as Jumpman. (Which even is the generic label regarding that Michael Jordan spread leg Nike logo. Two of the most celebrated icons actually both have generic versions of themselves known as Jumpman. But just one has today reached a point of being very powerful that he shaved himself a Hitler mustache before filming a commercial and the balls were had by no one to correct him.)
In 1980, as the Nintendo of America crew brought in Jumpman to lift him right into a franchise-leading star (Hayden Christensen style), an individual discovered that he looked like their Seattle office building's landlord... a person called Mario Segale.
Mario Segale didn't obtain a dime for being the namesake of one of the most well known video game persona perhaps, although he probably isn't too concerned; in 1998 he sold the asphalt company of his for more than $60 million. (Or 600,000 extra lives.)
Luigi.
Luigi has one of the weakest brand beginnings of most of the mario characters names in the Mario universe (once again showing why, for life that is real, he would have a greater inferiority complicated than Frank Stallone, Abel or that 3rd Manning brother).
"Luigi" is merely the result of people of Japanese males trying to consider an Italian name to enhance "Mario." Why was the Italian label they went with? When they all moved from Japan to Seattle, the pizza place nearest to the Nintendo headquarters referred to as Mario & Luigi's. (It has since gone from business.)
Koopa.
Koopa is a transliterated model of the Japanese rap for the adversary turtles, "Kuppa." Stick with me here -- kuppa is the Japanese phrase for a Korean plate called gukbap. Essentially it is a cup of soup with elmer rice. From what I definitely inform it's totally unrelated to turtles, particularly malicious ones.
In an interview, Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, stated he was deciding between three distinct names because of the high-speed of evil turtles, every one of that happened to be named after Korean foods. (The other 2 were yukhoe and bibimbap.) Which means one of two things: (1) Miyamoto adores Korean foods and needed to give it a tribute or (2) Miyamoto thinks Koreans are evil and should be jumped on.
Wario.
I kind of skipped the debut of Wario -- he debuted in 1992, right around when I was hitting the era just where I was too awesome for cartoon-y Nintendo games. (Me and the middle school buddies of mine happened to be into Genesis only. I was again on Nintendo within four years.)
Seems his title functions both in Japanese and english; I kinda assumed the English fashion but didn't know about the Japanese element. In English, he is an evil, bizarro marketplace mirror image of Mario. The "M" flips to turn into a "W" and also Wario is created. The name likewise operates in Japanese, where it's a combination of Mario as well as "warui," that indicates "bad."
That's a really excellent situation, since, as I covered extensively in the summary eleven Worst Japanese-To-English Translations In Nintendo History, only a few language significant difference finesses again and also forth quite efficiently.
Waluigi.
When I initially read "Waluigi" I assumed it was hilarious. While Wario was obviously an all natural counterbalance to Mario, Waluigi believed really comically shoehorned (just tacking the "wa" prefix before Luigi) -- including a huge inside joke that somehow cleared every single bureaucratic step and then cracked the mainstream.
Well... in accordance with the Nintendo folks, Waluigi isn't just a gloriously lazy choice or maybe an inside joke become substantial. They *say* it is based upon the Japanese word ijiwaru, which means "bad guy."
I do not understand. I sense that we would have to cater for them more than halfway to pay for that.
Toad.
Toad is built to look as a mushroom (or toadstool) thanks to the gigantic mushroom hat of his. It is a good thing the gaming systems debuted before the whole model realized how you can generate penis jokes.
Anyway, in Japan, he's considered Kinopio, which is certainly a blend of the term for mushroom ("kinoko") as well as the Japanese version of Pinocchio ("pinokio"). Those combine to be something along the collections of "A Real Mushroom Boy."
Goomba.
In Japanese, these guys are named kuribo, which translates to "chestnut people." That seems sensible because, ya know, if someone asked you "what do chestnut individuals appear to be like?" you would almost certainly arrive at food nearly like these heroes.
When they were shipped for the American model, the team tangled with the Italian initiative of theirs and known as them Goombas... primarily based off of the Italian "goombah," that colloquially means something like "my fellow Italian friend." It also type of evokes the photo of low level mafia criminals without very many competencies -- like people's younger brothers as well as cousins who they had to work with or perhaps mother would yell at them. Which also is true for the Mario Bros. goombas.
Birdo.
Birdo has nothing at all to do with this initial Japanese title. There, he's called Kyasarin, which regularly translates to "Catherine."
In the teaching manual for Super Mario Bros. two, where Birdo debuted, the character explanation of his reads: "Birdo considers he's a girl and would like for being called Birdetta."
What In my opinion all of this means? Nintendo shockingly decided to produce a character that battles with the gender identity of his and called him Catherine. In the event it was a bit of time to go to America, they got cold feet so they decided at the last second to phone him Birdo, though he's a dinosaur. (And do not offer me the "birds are descended from dinosaurs" pop paleontology line. Not buying that connection.) In that way, we'd just understand about the gender confusion of his in case we have a look at manual, and the Japanese have been pretty sure Americans had been sometimes too lazy or even illiterate to do it en masse.
Princess Toadstool/Peach.
When everyone got released on the Princess, she was recognized as Princess Toadstool. I suppose this made good sense -- Mario was set in the Mushroom Kingdom, so why would not its monarch be named Princess Toadstool. Them inbreeding blue bloods are usually naming their young children immediately after the country.
Nobody seems to be sure the reason they went the guidance, however. In Japan, she was regarded as Princess Peach from day one. The name didn't debut here until 1993, when Yoshi's Safari came out for Super Nintendo. (By the manner by which -- have you ever had Yoshi's Safari? In a bizarre twist it's a first-person shooter, the only one in the entire Mario times past. It's like something like a country music superstar making a weird rock album.)
Bowser.
In Japan, there is certainly no Bowser. He is simply known as the King Koopa (or maybe comparable variants, including Great Demon King Koopa). So exactly where did Bowser come from?
During the import procedure, there was a problem that the American masses would not recognize how the little turtles and big bad fellow could very well certainly be called Koopa. So a marketing group developed a large number of options for a name, they adored Bowser the very best, and slapped it on him.
In Japan, he's still rarely referred to as Bowser. Over here, the name of his has become so ubiquitous that he's actually supplanted Sha Na Na's Bowzer as America's a good number of prominent Bowser.
Donkey Kong.
This's a much more literal interpretation than you think. "Kong" is based off of King Kong. "Donkey" is a family friendly means of calling him an ass. That's right: His name is a valuable model of "Ass Ape."
Super Mario Bros. is a video recording game introduced for the family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System found 1985. It shifted the gameplay away from the single-screen arcade predecessor of its, Mario Bros., and rather highlighted side scrolling platformer quantities. While not the first game of the Mario franchise, Super Mario Bros. is pretty legendary, and presented a variety of series staples, coming from power ups, to classic foes like Goombas, to the simple concept of rescuing Princess Toadstool out of King Koopa. Along with kicking above an entire series of Super Mario platformer video games, the untamed success of Super Mario Bros. popularized the genre as an entire, really helped revive the gaming sector as soon as the 1983 clip game crash, and also was largely the cause of the original success around the NES, with that it was bundled a launch name. Until eventually it had been eventually exceeded by Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros. was the very best marketing videos game of all of the time for almost three decades, with over forty thousand copies marketed globally.

How had been selected the Names for Super Mario
The origin of the Mario sequence! Would you like to come together or...or against each and every other...?!
Mario Bros. is an action game produced by Nintendo found 1983.
It's the original game which pre-owned "Mario" in the title. Control Mario or Luigi to be able to value the adversaries coming out of pipes from underneath to convert them over and then conquer them. Inside the two-player setting, each players can choose to work together or do the job against each other as well as enjoy the game within many ways.
The "Arcade Archives" sequence has faithfully reproduced numerous standard Arcade masterpieces.
Players can alter various game options like game difficulty, plus likewise reproduce the aura of arcade display settings during that time. Players can also compete against one another from all over the world because of their superior scores.
Please love the masterpiece which built a version for footage games.
Could you produce a film from a video game? That is the doubting that's answered by this movie. Mario Mario in addition to the Luigi Mario, two hard performing plumbers find out themselves inside a different universe where grown dinosaurs live in medium hi-tech squalor. They find themselves the sole anticipation to save the environment from your invasion.
This is the story of two hard-working Italian plumber brothers named Mario Mario as well as Luigi Mario, exactly who befriends a paleontologist named Daisy. An enormous get of mystical brand new dinosaur bones are uncovered by her. While examining the tunnels wherein dinosaur fossils lay, saboteurs selected with the Mario Bros. rival businessman, Anthony Scapelli, to break some underground piping. Meanwhile, within a secret planet identified as Dinohattan, King Koopa's farm land is close to exhausting much of its clean water and running through difficulties thus he transmits Spike along with Iggy to kidnap Daisy! The Super Mario Bros. find themselves the only real hope to save the earth from intrusion then challenge a diabolical lizard king and so they need to fight giant reptilian goombas, outwit misfit criminals, and also challenge sinister scheme by taking of the world!
Luigi and Mario, two wacky plumbers, tackle a daring pursuit in order to save a princess inside Dinohattan -- a hidden earth where the inhabitants developed from dinosaurs! Mario and Luigi deal with dangerous challenges from a diabolical lizard king and also must battle gigantic reptilian goombas, outwit misfit criminals, and ruin a sinister system to take control of the world!
2 Brooklyn plumbers, Luigi and Mario, should travel to yet another dimension to rescue a princess from the evil dictator King Koopa and stop him from shooting over the world.
When I found that out I did 2 things. For starters, I whipped out my copy (yes, I maintain it that real/nerdy which I still need an older NES hooked up in my room) and made confident I will be able to match the game at will. (I can. Childhood not wasted.)
Secondly, I started down a rabbit hole of looking through Mario websites as well as Articles and Wikis. In the process, I stumbled upon the etymologies of the labels of a few of the key players in the Mario universe. Therefore, in honor of the video game that changed the globe, in this article they're, given in useful 11-item list form.
Mario.
When Mario debuted in the arcade game "Donkey Kong", he was simply known as Jumpman. (Which additionally actually is the generic name associated with that Michael Jordan dispersed leg Nike logo. Two of the most celebrated icons ever before each have generic versions of themselves referred to as Jumpman. But simply at least one has nowadays gotten to a point of being extremely effective that he shaved himself a Hitler mustache prior to filming a business and the balls were had by nobody to correct him.)
In 1980, as the Nintendo of America crew shipped Jumpman to elevate him right into a franchise-leading star (Hayden Christensen style), an individual discovered that he looked just like their Seattle office building's landlord... a guy named Mario Segale.
Mario Segale didn't get yourself a cent for turning out to be the namesake of pretty much the most well known video game character perhaps, however, he most likely isn't absurdly concerned; in 1998 he sold the asphalt small business of his for over sixty dolars million. (Or 600,000 extra lives.)
Luigi.
Luigi has one of probably the weakest name roots of all of the mario princesses in the Mario universe (once again displaying precisely why, in actual life, he would have a greater inferiority complicated compared to Frank Stallone, Abel or that third Manning brother).
"Luigi" is merely the product of a team of Japanese guys attempting to consider an Italian brand to accentuate "Mario." Why was that the Italian brand they went with? When they all moved from Japan to Seattle, the pizza place nearby to the Nintendo headquarters known as Mario & Luigi's. (It has since gone out of business.)
Koopa.
Koopa is a transliterated model of the Japanese name for the enemy turtles, "Kuppa." Stick with me here -- kuppa is the Japanese phrase for a Korean recipe called gukbap. Essentially it is a cup of soup with cereal. From what I definitely tell it is completely unrelated to turtles, particularly malicious ones.
In an interview, Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, explained he was deciding between three brands which are distinct because of the race of evil turtles, each one of which have been named after Korean foods. (The alternative two were yukhoe and bibimbap.) And that means among 2 things: (1) Miyamoto adores Korean foods and was looking to offer a tribute or even (2) Miyamoto believes Koreans are evil and have to be jumped on.
Wario.
I sort of overlooked the debut of Wario -- he debuted in 1992, right around when I was hitting the age where I was too awesome for cartoon y Nintendo games. (Me and the middle school buddies of mine happened to be into Genesis only. I was again on Nintendo within four years.)
Appears the name of his works both in english and Japanese; I kinda assumed the English manner but didn't know about the Japanese feature. In English, he's an evil, bizarro community mirror image of Mario. The "M" turns to turn into a "W" and Wario is produced. The name also works in Japanese, when it's a combination of Mario and "warui," that indicates "bad."
That's a really great scenario, since, as I covered thoroughly in the summary 11 Worst Japanese-To-English Translations In Nintendo History, don't assume all language difference finesses back as well as forth as efficiently.
Waluigi.
When I initially seen "Waluigi" I thought it was hilarious. While Wario became an all natural counterbalance to Mario, Waluigi felt really comically shoehorned (just tacking the "wa" prefix before Luigi) -- like a giant inside joke that somehow cleared every bureaucratic step and then cracked the mainstream.
Well... in accordance with the Nintendo folks, Waluigi is not only a gloriously lazy choice or perhaps an inside joke gone huge. They *say* it is based upon the Japanese phrase ijiwaru, meaning "bad guy."
I don't understand. I sense that we would have to supply them more than halfway to get that.
Toad.
Toad is built to look like a mushroom (or toadstool) thanks to the gigantic mushroom hat of his. It is a good thing these gaming systems debuted before the entire generation understood the right way to generate penis jokes.
Anyway, in Japan, he's called Kinopio, which is certainly a mixture of the word for mushroom ("kinoko") as well as the Japanese version of Pinocchio ("pinokio"). Those blend to be something along the lines of "A Real Mushroom Boy."
Goomba.
In Japanese, these men are defined as kuribo, that results in "chestnut people." That is sensible because, ya know, if another person expected you "what do chestnut individuals appear to be like?" you'd probably arrive at something nearly similar to these heroes.
Once they had been brought in for the American version, the team tangled with their Italian initiative and known as them Goombas... based off of the Italian "goombah," that colloquially will mean anything as "my fellow Italian friend." Furthermore, it type of evokes the photo of low-level mafia criminals without very a lot of expertise -- like people's younger brothers and cousins who they had to employ or maybe mother would yell at them. That also is true for the Mario Bros. goombas.
Birdo.
Birdo has nothing to do with this original Japanese title. There, he's named Kyasarin, that typically results in "Catherine."
In the instruction manual for Super Mario Bros. 2, in which Birdo debuted, his character explanation reads: "Birdo thinks he is a woman and additionally wants being called Birdetta."
What I believe this all means? Nintendo shockingly chosen to develop a character who battles with the gender identity of his and then referred to as him Catherine. In the event it was time to show up to America, they got feet which are cold so they determined at the last minute to telephone call him Birdo, even though he's a dinosaur. (And do not offer me the "birds are descended from dinosaurs" pop-paleontology line. Not purchasing that connection.) In that way, we would only understand about the gender confusion of his in case we have a look at mechanical, and the Japanese had been fairly certain Americans had been sometimes too lazy or perhaps illiterate to accomplish that en masse.
Princess Toadstool/Peach.
When everyone got released on the Princess, she was recognized as Princess Toadstool. I assume this made good sense -- Mario was put in the Mushroom Kingdom, so why would not its monarch be named Princess Toadstool. Them inbreeding bluish bloods are usually naming the kids of theirs after the country.
No person appears to be sure precisely why they went the direction, however. In Japan, she was known as Princess Peach from day one. The title didn't debut here before 1993, when Yoshi's Safari arrived on the scene for Super Nintendo. (By the manner by which -- have you ever played Yoshi's Safari? In an off-the-wall twist it is a first-person shooter, the only woman in the whole Mario times past. It is like something like a country music superstar creating a weird rock album.)
Bowser.
In Japan, there is simply no Bowser. He is simply called the King Koopa (or similar variants, including Great Demon King Koopa). And so exactly where did Bowser come from?

Sooooooo... where to begin here. This is in response to this post where I claim that 4A’s YHVH 2 is not meant to be the Gnostic Demiurge. Frankly, I feel like a bit of an idiot for replying to this again because I know I’m going to be going over the same things as I did before, which I presume have been conveniently ignored.
But anyway, I guess I’ll go by paragraph groupings!
Paragraphs 1 & 2: Multiples of the same demon exist, including multiple Satans, and two Satans square off in the end of SMT2.
I suppose you mean that Satan and Lucifer can have a showdown in the final battles? But Jewish Satan, a part of God, and Christian Satan/Lucifer, the fallen angel, are pretty distinct and not interchangeable. You couldn’t put Lucifer in Judaism because Lucifer requires free will of a type that he wouldn’t get in Judaism because Yahweh is absolute and all angels are just a part of him.
Otherwise, yes, there are multiples of many demons, absolutely. But there are multiples for a reason: they are meant to be distinct concepts that are not necessarily interchangeable, as we see with Lucifer and Satan (unless they are “multiples” that work appropriately within a given religion, like Vishnu’s Avatars). I suppose you made this argument to try and refute what I said in the above linked post about Demiurge and YHVH not being equated in 4A because you can fight the latter with the former in your party, but you’re assuming an absolute equivalency where there isn’t one. Jewish Yahweh and Gnostic Demiurge are not the same being in religion or SMT (though see the paragraph immediately below), even if Gnosticism’s is based off of the Jewish. Gnostic Demiurge does things no Jew or even Christian would accept and is a distinct entity from “God” with a different background and personality.
So, in SMT, a demon has to be primarily the god or being their name implies them to be, else there would be no meaning to anything. By itself, SMT’s Demiurge is just the Demiurge. But sometimes context can change this, as we see with the Demiurge in Strange Journey. But there the context of the Demiurge changes in a logical way because it’s written to acknowledge the place of Yahweh in the Gnostic historical framework. It’s not there because they want to make an independent statement that God is evil or has a bad streak, but to make reference to the Gnostic belief system. So here, YHVH is only being “demonized” because of an explicit reference to a religious precedent. Again, context, something that is sorely lacking in 4A’s take on YHVH.
Paragraphs 3, 5, 6, 7, 8: There aren’t many Gnostic figures in SMT, Persona 5 has Gnostic and Kabbalistic themes, and there is room for Gnostic interpretations and themes in 4A. There are themes of “knowledge” in SMT and this absolutely means Gnosticism reference. These secret Gnostic themes have been there the whole time, but obscured by a Judeo-Christian facade because that would shift the aesthetic too much; the alternate themes that do exist are more subtle as not to interfere with the central themes. God has multiple names in Judaism but also Gnosticism. Gnosticism is the go-to when portraying YHVH as a bad guy and had to be an inspiration.
First: I don’t care what Persona does, it’s irrelevant. Persona is abstract with its various mythological elements by design.
As for the rest...there are just too many assumptions to make me even want to bother engaging with it. It honestly reminds me of the arguments a certain other someone makes. Your entire position is based on subjective interpretations and circumstantial evidence. Yes, it’s possible that the Gnostic Demiurge was part of the inspiration for 4A’s approach to YHVH (and I even admitted as such in the original post!) but there’s none of that all-important direct evidence to support the claim of a equivocal YHVH-Demiurge adaptation. General themes aren’t enough. A laughable hypothesis that the games are secretly Gnostic because Judeo-Christian appearances would be more acceptable is not enough. Gods having multiple names isn’t enough (which important gods don’t have multiple names?). All the direct evidence we have, from the game and Doi’s commentary, points to the fact that 4A’s YHVH is meant to be...YHVH, not the Demiurge.
Paragraphs 3 & 9: The “Smoking Guns”: “Archon” Michael and the lion-headed snake.
Had to save this for last. On the ribbon banner tied around Gaston’s Michael’s Spear...

...there are two visible Greek words. The easiest to see is “Μιχαήλ,” or “Michael,” of course referring to the archangel (though actually, it’s written as “ΜιχαΗλ“, with an upper-case Eta). The second, obscured word is “ο ἄρχων” or, rather, “ ο ἄρχωN” (another mistake, as Doi substituted the upper-case Greek letter Nu when it should have been lower-case), and this (ἄρχων, that is) is usually translated as “ruler,” but transliterated it is “archon.” This is really neat and I’m glad you pointed it out because I didn’t think to look too closely at the letters here.
However, the claim here is that the “archon” on the banner is a reference to Gnosticism and its gang of evil “rulers” headed by the Demiurge/Yaldabaoth. This is an incredible stretch because Michael is not considered an archon in Gnosticism. In fact, there’s an easier and better way to explain the meaning of “ruler Michael”: searching in Greek for “ο αρχων Μιχαηλ“ seems to imply that it’s just a way of expressing Michael’s name or a shortened version of “Archangel Michael” in Greek. Seems to have nothing to do with Gnosticism or its archons! This is akin to “Gungnir” being written in the runic alphabet on Doi’s Odin’s spear. It’s likely that Doi wanted to include some extra flair to the weapons and quickly looked up how to write words relevant to them (and not perfectly, in the case of Michael’s Spear).
Also, think about it from the creator’s perspective. If you were writing a game and wanted an overarching theme that’s relevant to its climax, would you include a reference to that theme, one of the only explicit references to the theme in the game, in an easily overlooked detail on a single character design? Moreover, does a minor detail on an illustration from an artist who by all accounts seems divorced from the writing process constitute evidence for such a theme? In the artbook commentary for Gaston, Doi mentions that the spear references the battle with Lucifer; no mention of archons at all.

Finally, the lion-headed snake. I feel I have to quote you here, Bunkerbead: “Sure, the over-designed plagues nonsense looks stupid, but that’s another matter. If I was going to draw the demiurge, I probably wouldn’t leave the head as a lion either.” Okay, so, this classical appearance for the Demiurge, one you have submitted to me or Kaneko’s Crib Notes multiple times as an explanation for the YHVH 2 design and why it isn’t nonsensical, is something you admit doesn’t actually apply to the design and you yourself would immediately reject? I...rest my case.
I’m sorry Bunkerman/Beadman, your arguments here are just too inconsistent, lack real evidence, and are more easily explained in other ways. It’s very tempting to jump to immediate conclusions that support a narrative of your own creation, even if it’s far grander than what the creators intended, but that road more often than not quickly strains the limits of credulity and, as I think has been displayed here, an unwillingness to accept the direct evidence that refutes what you would rather believe.

Persona 5, untranslatable jokes, and tokin on 4/20
To preface this: Persona 5 is the best JRPG in years. Please buy the game. Please do not use this or any bitching about the localization you see as a reason not to get it, because it isn’t one. It’s great. Play it. I will probably be making a post soon about some of the brilliant game design things in it!
So I was irritated about one of the questions in Persona 5 and made a random tweet about it after looking it up in english sources and trying to figure out a factual basis for it. All the english sources on tokin (the name of a promoted pawn in Shogi) did not mention the history of how kin became to, and, more importantly, I could not find a single example of a cursive kin anywhere that looked anything like a to. So what the game was saying seemed pretty darn suspect.
Now to be fair, I don’t consider myself an authority on Japanese language and wouldn’t expect to be cited as such, but shortly thereafter Chris Kohler at Kotaku linked to the tweets and made an article based on them: http://kotaku.com/this-might-be-persona-5s-biggest-translation-fail-1794223069
Now I want to specify that I was not contacted ahead of time about this. I didn’t plan or want this to become an article at a major game site. I was just kinda bitching. I did not expect this to extend beyond the people who follow me, many of whom give no shits about Persona, localization accuracy, or the minutae of Kanji. If I had been asked, I would have preferred not to be cited for two reasons:
It’s really a minor issue and I don’t think it’s representative of my overall feelings on the game.
The level of research I put into it the tweet was appropriate for a tweet, not for an article in a major game news site.
But, at the same time, I don’t think Chris had any bad intentions with the article - it was just an interesting point of the language and an odd thing to show up in an English localized game. Chris is a good dude.
Anyways, as soon as I saw it had been made into an article, I panicked because if I wanted to be more sure I was accurate, I should have looked at Japanese sources. So I did. And, thankfully, japanese google provided this article which was massively helpful:
http://www.tonan.jp/moji/10tokin/
So, this is a long article. But what it boils down to, is arguing that it is not, in fact, a hiragana と at all - but, it also argues that it is quite uncertain as to what it actually is.
It looks like he ends up feeling like the most likely explanation is that it originated from 今, which is an ateji (phonetic replacement or spelling of a kanji that is read a certain way with no regard to its meaning) for 金.
http://tonan.seesaa.net/article/31091021.html
Anyways, either way, my explanation was wrong, which I then brought up to Chris, who was nice enough to update the article. Now, while admitting that I was inaccurate in my factual reasoning as to why it was factually wrong, the fact remains that the statement in the english version of the game - that と金 is the cursive form of a specific kanji - is wrong. Now, it appears that there’s argument as to whether the Japanese was even correct - but it’s certainly different, and less wrong than the English. Let me explain why. Here’s the original Japanese:

In text:
この字はある漢字の崩し字なんだ、 なにか分かる?
So, let’s break this down. First, I’ll translate the easy nouns. 字 (ji) is character (it can mean other stuff but that’s most likely in this context). 漢字 (kanji) is… kanji.
The other noun is 崩し字 (kuzushiji) , which can sort of theoretically be translated to “cursive” or “simplified” character - but it doesn’t mean cursive in really the same sense that western cursive is used. There’s a ton of possible ways to write a character in 崩し字 - really, anything that is written using a brush and omits or simplifies strokes is technically 崩し字. Which is why, in the articles above, he dislikes the argument that tokin originates from a 崩し字 of 金, because while it could be a theoretically VERY cavalier 崩し字, it really drastically simplifies the kanji (far moreso than the other shoji pieces simplify the same kanji). But I’ll give that that’s a lot of detail the game can’t provide so I’ll let it get away with cursive form :)
Okay, so we have:
この character はある kanji の cursive form なんだ、なにか分かる?
Next, the other easy stuff. この is this. なんだ is “what is”. なにか means something. So we get:
This character はある kanji の cursive form what is、something 分かる?
Last we’ll do verbs and particles. I won’t explain particles because they're a whole section of Japanese grammar that's not really pertinent and is somewhat complex but suffice it to say they are short “grammatical helpers” that mark the grammatical function of words in sentences, sort of like helping verbs and articles in English. Anyways, the verbs here are ある (aru), which means to be/exist (specially referring to inanimate objects), and 分かる (wakaru) which means a lot of different things in english, but usually it means do you understand or know. The only other things are は, which is a particle marking a new topic of conversation in a sentence, and has no real translatable direct equivalent in english, and の, which indicates that a noun possesses or modifies another noun. So, without any word rearrangement, you end up with: “This character is cursive form of kanji what is, something understand?”
Which is a little intentionally obtuse but some simple rearrangement gets you something closer to english:
“This character is cursive form of what kanji, something understand?”
This is all you can really infer from transliteration. To turn this into actual English we need to start making value judgments and doing actual translation. So to get English out of this, the first and easiest thing to do is to realize that なにか分かる is just ellipsing the subject, which is probably the student who the teacher is asking the question to. Also, you need your helping verbs and pronouns, and the nanika wakaru is more of an expression, so it’s probably closer to “do you know?”. All of that is interpretation and at the translator’s discretion, but it’s necessary to end up with something that’s vaguely English.
For the first part of the sentence, you are almost actually at a readable fragment, you just need an article, and here’s where I think the translation goes wrong. It uses “the”, when it clearly should use “a”.
Why? “the” implies singularity and absoluteness. “the” implies that there is a single, or at the very least primary answer to the question “what is the cursive form of this kanji”, and that that single answer is the one they are looking for. But any Japanese person will tell you that 1) there are many cursive forms of Kanji and 2) that the “primary” cursive form of the 金, if it existed, would not be what is seen on the shogi piece. In fact, the very next slide conflicts with the usage of “the”, because it shows three different purported cursive forms of 金- and again, whether tokin factually is a cursive form of 金 is debatable, but that is at least asserted in the Japanese text, too!
So, I think a closer translation (and closer to the original Japanese structure) would be something like: “This character is a cursive form of a kanji - do you know which?” If you wanted to make it flow better, you could go from there. Something like “Can you tell me which cursive kanji this character originated from?”
Now, you might argue a simple swapping of “a” for “the” isn’t a big deal. And you would be right to some extent. But I certainly would argue that it undermines the coolest part of these little quiz games, which is that they actually teach you things! You could imagine someone playing this game, then later picking up Japanese, seeing a hiragana “to”, and telling their teacher “oh I learned that’s a cursive “kin!”” to be greeted by a frowning head-nod no. One of the coolest parts of the persona games is the opportunity to learn about Japanese, and it’s a bummer that it gives you misinformation by way of a relatively simple error.
But - I actually think the bigger translation issues, and the reason why I think a bigger change should have been made to this question, is in the answers. So, this is actually even a tricky question in japanese! While searching for japanese sources, I actually found this blog:
http://karigezima.com/archives/25714
which says:
将棋経験者ならすぐに分かる問題です。
将棋してない人からしたら難しい…かな?(´・ω・`;)
Or - “Shogi players will instantly know the answer. But people who don’t play shogi probably screamed about how hard it is, huh?”
So yeah - this is a tricky question in Japanese. But, in typical multiple choice test fashion, it actually has something to help you out:

So here’s the answer options in Japanese. Let’s compare them with the english options:

So, to start things off, the question is asking about the cursive form of kanji - which you need to be able to see the kanji to determine, but the english version doesn’t let you see the freaking kanji! And, a single English word might correspond to multiple kanji. For instance, divination as a kanji could just as easily be 占 as 卜. And, while it’s more of a technicality because 金 is certainly the most obvious kanji that means “gold”, gold could also mean 鋆, 釛 , 鉚, 鎏 , 鏐 . Those might not be things that a sane person would think of when given the option “gold”, the fact remains that the game is supposed to be translated into English and you shouldn’t need to know Kanji to understand and answer questions correctly in it!
But I think the bigger deal here is that you actually miss out on the “dummy” option. See, because while “Divination” is technically what 卜 means, it is not an option in the Japanese version because of that - it’s there because it’s looks almost exactly like ト, which is the same sound, “to”, in the other major japanese character system, Katakana.
So for a Japanese speaker, you instantly see that dumb middle option and rule it out because it’s clearly a trick answer for dummies. It’s even maybe a little chuckle-worthy. You just miss out on all of that in english.
Because it’s so untranslatable to someone who doesn’t understand Japanese, and because really the relevant point here narratively and symbolically is that the lowest shogi piece can promote into the Gold General, and how that ties into the idea of neauvau riche, I think it would have been nice to just ask something like “This piece indicates when a pawn is promoted to what rank”? It’s a bit further from the Japanese, but again, if you can’t convey the meaning in Japanese without explaining what kanji are, how they are simplified, and make the answers make sense visually to players, maybe just get at the heart of the issue and the bigger narrative point.
Anyways, long story short - I still think this could have been better, but I’m glad it existed in a way because it was very much a learning opportunity for me!

My response to extended periods of stress is to distract myself by cramming new things into my head. I had a terrible semester at college once and front-loaded the entirety of the sci.electronics.repair FAQ into my brain. It wasn't useful at the time, but I can repair the shit out of a VCR now, so I assume I'll use it someday. I am so overloaded I am about to claw my own face off, so naturally I am teaching myself Hebrew. I've been using Duolingo to do it, which is frankly a very bad idea. (I should really be using Ha'Ulpan, which is where you'd typically go for a crash course in Hebrew before emigrating to Israel, but that costs money, so no.) Duolingo is billed as a way to teach yourself a language, which it is not. It is a way to memorize a bunch of interactive flashcards. This might be effective for people who don't care how language works -- which is most people -- but it's awful for people like me, who hang all of their memorization off of a framework of base patterns. Duolingo explains nothing. The "lessons":
Do not teach the alphabet. Hebrew is written in this sort of half-assed abjad, where most but not all vowels are not marked in non-teaching texts, and some but not most unmarked vowels are actually represented by a placeholder Alef. 'Aba' is father and 'ima' is mother, but they are both written Alef-something else-Alef. Look at that and imagine how the vowel change looks totally mental to someone who spells things in a full alphabet. Alef comes out looking like it says about six different things, one of which is nothing.
Do not explain the orthography. There are several pairs of letters in Hebrew that do, or at least can, say the same thing. Tet and Tav both say /t/; Kaf and Qof both say /k/; Yod and Ayin are both sort of /j/ and sort of not; Vav and Bet can both say /v/, although both also have other readings; Samekh is /s/ and Shin can be read that way as well. Some other apparent character pairs are actually the same letter that has a 'sofit' form when it comes at the end of the word, which on the Hebrew keyboard is a different key (as opposed to the Arabic IME, which auto-corrects to the final form when it kerns all the cursive joining). I still have no idea if there is a rule behind Tet vs Tav; Yod vs Ayin and Kaf vs Qof are almost certainly because they once represented different sounds (Yaa vs 'Ayin and Kaa vs Qaf are still separated in Arabic), but I don't have enough context to guess which is likely to be which in Modern Hebrew.
Do not consistently read new vocabulary words out loud. If you're not going to explain the letters to me, the least you can do is read me the word so I can figure it out myself. Of course, it also never explicitly mentions that you read all this right-to-left, which seems like an important note to give when you're using a left-to-right language for instruction. You would think it would be obvious when everything is right-justified, but this is the kind of stuff you shouldn't take for granted when building beginning lessons in anything.
Do not use any nekkudot. A nikkud ("point") is a diacritical mark, mainly underneath the consonant but occasionally beside, inside, or above it, that explicitly indicates ('dagesh') a pronunciation change or ('nikkud') an unwritten vowel. This is how you teach people to read Hebrew, in Hebrew. You use it for small children. Or, if you have any sense, novice adult learners.
Do not explain any grammar. There is no explanation of why "you" is sometimes 'at' and sometimes 'atah'. No explanation of why sometimes the present-tense verb has an '-et' on the end and sometimes doesn't, even when the subject is 'ani' in both cases. (Answer: Hebrew inflects according to gender of both subject and speaker, which seems like a thing that should be noted for anglophones.) You are left to guess at wtf to do with prepositions and particles like Ha, V', Be, Le, and others.
Do not consistently account for the direction switch of Hebrew input. Firstly, there's no warning that the thing expects you to type in Hebrew; I installed a Hebrew keyboard before I started, but I also have six other keyboard layouts on the phone, because I'm me. If it wants you to type a full sentence, it can get the text running consistently right to left, but there are exercises that want you to fill in just one word, and that breaks it horribly. The words run right-to-left as intended, but they are arranged left-to-right in English order.
Do not listen to its own internal dictionary of synonyms. I have run into this in other languages and it drives me crazy. There are exercises where it asks you to translate a sentence in the target language into English. If you tap 'derech', Duolingo tells you it means a way, a path, or a road. Translating 'derech' as anything other than "way" in the English sentence gets you marked off. If there is some reason why 'Ha'yeled roah derech' could not mean "The boy sees a road" isolated from context, Duolingo does not give it.
I am already cheating by being a linguist who has some idea of how Semitic languages work. My one attempt at an Arabic class was a disaster for non-Arabic-related reasons, but I do know basic things like the idea behind an abjad, handling regular transformations of letter shapes at the end of a word, and how words are constructed by adding vowels/prefixes/suffixes to a triconsonantal root. These would be completely alien to most English speakers. There is a systemic way to accomplish transformations like the one from "(male) child" ('yeled') to "(female) child" ('yaldah') or "children" ('yeldim'), or from the noun "food" ('okel') to the verb for "to eat" ('le'kol'), but it is never actually pointed out.
I also have a living resource who grew up speaking Hebrew and enjoys teaching people things, usually at great length. I can ask the Eccentric all the weird stuff and he'll give me a long, detailed answer, fully 60% of which will have something to do with the original question. Technical grammar questions can be Googled to good effect, but the answers to cultural questions are, at best, unreliable. (Example: "Does Modern Hebrew have regional accents?" Google answer: "Modern Hebrew is very young and spoken in a contained geographic area. While there are some tiny variations in pronunciation and vocabulary, these are so slight it is unlikely a non-native speaker would ever notice them." Answer from actual Israeli person: "Absolutely, remind me next time I see you and I'll do imitations, some of them are hilarious.") [The question of accents is especially pertinent; I am never comfortable in a language until I sound like myself, and since I don't sound like a textbook all the time, this usually means picking a dialect to drop into. My informal Japanese tends to stay Tokyo-standard in grammar but in tone is rather bokukko, for instance. It's marked in speech (although often the actual pronoun boku is used in internet Japanese by female blog authors who don't want to be explicitly female in text), but I am clearly a non-native speaker, and I feel it conveys a proper warning that I am not going to do well by Japanese standards of femininity. There are a few potential accents I could wind up with in Hebrew. American is fairly far down on the list; I'm usually pretty good at not sounding like a Yank. The letter Resh is most universally difficult for non-native speakers. I could probably use the French or German R and be understood (both voiced uvular fricative /ʁ/, the French one higher and more nasalized), but the Resh as given in the only explicit explanation I've found is actually supposed to be a uvular trill /ʀ/, which occurs more towards the hard palate than either of those, and with a rounder sounding chamber behind it. It comes so far forward that it is the closest thing I have ever seen to the theoretically-impossible velar trill. Wikipedia says this is an Ashkenazim thing, which explains why you hear it so much in Yiddish. I would definitely be understood if I used the Arabic alveolar trill /r/, which is noted as a variation common among the Sephardim, but it's also associated with Arabic-speaking refugees, and I feel like that might not be the accent I want if I'm going to be practicing this on Israeli friends. I've no idea which one the Eccentric uses; I gather he has one parent from either tradition and they lived in Jerusalem, so who the fuck knows. It's impossible to pick up from his English. He's made no effort to zero out his accent, but he has had three decades to nail the English retroflex alveolar approximant /ɻ/, and more or less does. Chet is voiced /χ/, and undotted-Khaf is unvoiced /x/, both of which I have.]
An irksome aspect of learning Hebrew is the transliteration system. There isn't one. You notice that my Japanese is italicized and the attempts at Hebrew are in single quotes? This is because the Japanese is brought straight across using a standard Japanese-to-Latin alphabet system used in some textbooks and on the internet. (There are other, more precise systems, but they involve diacritical marks that can't be typed on a pure-ASCII keyboard.) The Hebrew is... uh, approximate. There is no way to unambiguously transcribe Hebrew text in Latin letters that is immediately readable to people whose languages use the Latin alphabet. Duolingo doesn't even try. I type things using the Hebrew IME whenever possible, because I'm trying to learn to spell, but when the Eccentric explains things to me he does it with the regular QWERTY keyboard. It has quirks. Words whose transliteration ends in '-ah', as in the new year's greeting 'shanah tovah', are words that end in He, a letter which normally says /h/ but when word-final represents /a:/ for grammatical reasons. He also consistently writes his Vav as "U'" when it's used as a conjunction, even though it's pronounced /v/. My guess is that this is how it is taught in Israeli schools. There seems to be a system behind it, but it does not make sense unless you also read the original Hebrew.
This is all somehow working anyway, probably because I'm me. I made it to Day 18 of my first ever stab at learning Hebrew before I started scaring up podcasts. It only took me that long because I had to figure out how to search for the word for "Hebrew (language)" in Hebrew, because searching in transliteration gets you nothing. Day 20 I picked up a series of linguistic interviews put out by Leshoniada (לשוניאדה, a word which gave Google Translate shitfits, but which the Eccentric informs me is a portmanteau that comes out something like "Grammar-lympics"). The details escape me completely, because I lack vocabulary, but because Hebrew has a very regular stress pattern (word-final, almost always) individual terms are easy to pick out. Between that and a lot of straight-up imports from Greek, the topic of the first episode was easy to get.

Secrets regarding Super Mario Names
The cause of the Mario series! Will you work together or...or from each and every other...?!
Mario Bros. is an action game released by Nintendo found 1983.
It's the original game which used "Mario" inside the name. Control Mario or Luigi in order to value the opponents coming out of water lines from underneath to transform them over and then defeat them. Within the two-player mode, both players can decide to come together or perhaps work against each other and also enjoy the game within a myriad of ways.
The "Arcade Archives" series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces.
Players are able to change a variety of game controls including game problems, and also reproduce the ambiance of arcade display screen settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other coming from around the world because of their high scores.
Please take pleasure in the masterpiece which built a version for video clip games.
Could you produce a film from a video game? That's the question that's addressed by this film. Mario Mario as well as Luigi Mario, 2 difficult performing plumbers find out themselves in an alternate universe where grown dinosaurs live in medium hi-tech squalor. They wind up the sole optimism to save the environment from your invasion.
This's the story of 2 hard working Italian plumber brothers called Mario Mario as well as Luigi Mario, whom befriends a paleontologist known as Daisy. A massive come across of mystical brand new dinosaur bones are uncovered by her. While exploring the tunnels wherein dinosaur fossils lay, saboteurs selected through the Mario Bros. competitor businessman, Anthony Scapelli, to kick some underground pipes. Meanwhile, inside a secret earth called Dinohattan, King Koopa's acreage is running out of water and also going through issues thus he transmits Spike as well as Iggy to kidnap Daisy! Now the Super Mario Bros. find themselves the only real optimism to save the earth from intrusion and then challenge a diabolical lizard king and they need to fight huge reptilian goombas, outwit misfit thugs, as well as challenge sinister scheme by shooting with the world!
Mario and Luigi, two wacky plumbers, tackle a daring quest to save a princess inside Dinohattan -- a hidden planet where the inhabitants evolved from dinosaurs! Mario and Luigi face dangerous obstacles from a diabolical lizard king and also should fight huge reptilian goombas, outwit misfit thugs, and also undermine a sinister program to dominate the world!
2 Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, should take a trip to another dimension to rescue a princess through the evil dictator King Koopa and prevent him out of taking over the world.
When I found that out I did two things. For starters, I whipped out the message of mine (yes, I maintain it which real/nerdy that I continue to have an older NES connected in my room) and then made positive I can still beat the game at will. (I can. Childhood not wasted.)
Secondly, I started down a rabbit hole of looking at Mario websites and Wikis and Articles. In the operation, I stumbled upon the etymologies of the brands of several of the main players in the Mario universe. Consequently, in honor of the video game which often changed the globe, right here they are, given in useful 11-item list form.
Mario.
When Mario debuted in the arcade game "Donkey Kong", he was just known as Jumpman. (Which also is the generic brand associated with that Michael Jordan dispersed leg Nike logo. 2 of the most renowned icons ever before each have generic versions of themselves known as Jumpman. But just one of them has now gotten to the effort of being so impressive that he shaved himself a Hitler mustache prior to filming a commercial and nobody had the balls to correct him.)
In 1980, as the Nintendo of America crew imported Jumpman to lift him into a franchise-leading star (Hayden Christensen style), an individual noticed that he looked just like their Seattle office building's landlord... a guy known as Mario Segale.
Mario Segale didn't obtain a dime for becoming the namesake of pretty much the most famous video game character by chance, but he most likely isn't very concerned; in 1998 he sold the asphalt company of his for more than $60 million. (Or 600,000 additional lives.)
Luigi.
Luigi has one of probably the weakest name roots of all the mario brothers characters in the Mario universe (once again displaying precisely why, for the real world, he'd have a larger inferiority complicated compared to Frank Stallone, Abel or perhaps that 3rd Manning brother).
"Luigi" is simply the product of people of Japanese men working to consider an Italian name to complement "Mario." Why was the Italian brand they went with? When they each moved from Japan to Seattle, the pizza place nearby to the Nintendo headquarters referred to as Mario & Luigi's. (It has since gone from business.)
Koopa.
Koopa is a transliterated variation of the Japanese name for the opponent turtles, "Kuppa." Stick with me here -- kuppa is the Japanese word for a Korean dish called gukbap. Basically it's a cup of soup with grain. From what I definitely tell it is absolutely not related to turtles, particularly malicious ones.
In an interview, Mario's author, Shigeru Miyamoto, explained he was deciding between three different brands because of the racing of evil turtles, each one of which happened to be called after Korean foods. (The alternative two were yukhoe and bibimbap.) Which means one of two things: (one) Miyamoto likes Korean food and was looking to give it a tribute or perhaps (2) Miyamoto considers Koreans are evil and have to be jumped on.
Wario.
I kind of skipped the debut of Wario -- he debuted in 1992, right around when I was hitting the generation exactly where I was extremely awesome for cartoon y Nintendo games. (Me and the middle school buddies of mine were into Genesis only. I was back on Nintendo within four years.)
Appears the label of his functions both in Japanese and english; I kinda assumed the English way but didn't know about the Japanese element. In English, he's an evil, bizarro community mirror image of Mario. The "M" flips to be a "W" and also Wario is created. The name also functions in Japanese, when it's the variety of Mario as well as "warui," that indicates "bad."
That is a really great situation, since, as I covered extensively in the list 11 Worst Japanese-To-English Translations In Nintendo History, not every language difference finesses back and also forth very efficiently.
Waluigi.
When I first seen "Waluigi" I believed it was hilarious. While Wario was obviously an all natural counterbalance to Mario, Waluigi felt really comically shoehorned (just tacking the "wa" prefix before Luigi) -- like a giant inside joke that somehow cleared each and every bureaucratic step and after that cracked the mainstream.
Well... according to the Nintendo folks, Waluigi is not just a gloriously lazy choice or an inside joke gone massive. They *say* it is based upon the Japanese term ijiwaru, meaning "bad guy."
I do not know. I feel as if we would have to supply them much more than halfway to invest in that.
Toad.
Toad is made to look as a mushroom (or perhaps toadstool) because of the massive mushroom hat of his. It is a good thing the gaming systems debuted before the entire generation knew how to earn penis jokes.
Anyway, in Japan, he's called Kinopio, which is certainly a mixture of the word for mushroom ("kinoko") as well as the Japanese variant of Pinocchio ("pinokio"). Those combine to be something along the lines of "A Real Mushroom Boy."
Goomba.
In Japanese, the guys are called kuribo, that results in "chestnut people." That is sensible because, ya know, if another person requested you "what do chestnut folks are like?" you would almost certainly get to something nearly similar to these figures.
Whenever they were shipped for the American version, the group caught with the Italian initiative of theirs and also called them Goombas... dependent off the Italian "goombah," that colloquially means something as "my fellow Italian friend." It also sort of evokes the photo of low level mafia criminals without too a lot of skills -- such as individuals younger brothers and also cousins who they'd to retain the services of or mother would yell at them. That also applies to the Mario Bros. goombas.
Birdo.
Birdo has absolutely nothing to do with this particular initial Japanese title. Generally there, he's considered Kyasarin, which results in "Catherine."
In the instruction manual for Super Mario Bros. 2, in which Birdo debuted, his character explanation reads: "Birdo believes he's a female and additionally would like to be called Birdetta."
What I do believe this all means? Nintendo shockingly opted to generate a character who battles with his gender identity and then named him Catherine. When it was a bit of time to come to America, they got feet that are cold so they resolved at the very last minute to call him Birdo, though he's a dinosaur. (And don't offer me the "birds are descended from dinosaurs" pop paleontology line. Not buying that connection.) That way, we'd just know about his gender confusion in case we look at the manual, and the Japanese had been pretty sure Americans had been sometimes too lazy or even illiterate to accomplish that en masse.
Princess Toadstool/Peach.
When everyone got introduced on the Princess, she was recognized as Princess Toadstool. I guess this made perfect sense -- Mario was put in the Mushroom Kingdom, so why would not its monarch be known as Princess Toadstool. Them inbreeding bluish bloods are always naming their young children immediately after the country.
No one appears to be sure the reason they went the direction, however. In Japan, she was known as Princess Peach from day one. That title did not debut here before 1993, when Yoshi's Safari became available for Super Nintendo. (By the manner -- have you played Yoshi's Safari? In an unconventional twist it's a first-person shooter, the only woman in the entire Mario the historical past. It's as the equivalent of a country music superstar creating a weird rock album.)
Bowser.
In Japan, there is simply no Bowser. He is simply referred to as the King Koopa (or perhaps related modifications, like Great Demon King Koopa). So just where did Bowser come from?
During the import process, there was an issue that the American masses would not see how the little turtles and big bad man might definitely be named Koopa. So a marketing team put together a large number of selections for a title, they liked Bowser the very best, and slapped it on him.
In Japan, he's nevertheless rarely called Bowser. Around here, the label of his has become very ubiquitous that he's actually supplanted Sha Na Na's Bowzer as America's many famous Bowser.
Donkey Kong.
This's a far more literal interpretation than you think. "Kong" is based off King Kong. "Donkey" is a family friendly means of calling him an ass. That's right: His label is a valuable model of "Ass Ape."
