One of my favorite sleep deprived tsundere next to Asuka Langley, Takane Enomoto. Drawing her really takes me back. It’s been a decade since I was obsessed with KagePro. I’m still hunting for merch if I can ever find them especially of my favourite Makakushi dan, Ene, even if KagePro isn’t popular anymore. Though, I’m still mad I never had merch of her 😭

Also I’ve heard Jin is releasing a new song on Oct 3. I can’t wait to see what homie cooked this time 👀

【KagePro】 Outer Science x ENVY BABY 🖤❤️🃏🐍

Happy 11th Anniversary to Outer Science! 🖤 💛 ❤️ 🎉🥳🎊

I actually had this prepared for Outer Science's 11th Anniversary on August 31st, but I just didn't post it here.

Outer Science will be my favourite KagePro song and MV forever. It was my gateway into KagePro as a 12 y/o, and it's also the song of my fave KagePro chara 🥰💞

I'll fill in the rough colours whenever I get the time. When I do, I'll post these on my art main blog (@/stepswordsen) and copy the rambles from this post over to main.

In celebration of Outer Science's Anniversary, I'll be posting rambles on the Outer Science MV (which will be split into parts cuz it's really long), these doodles, and the Outer Science illust I'm working on.

The first doodle I drew before is a crossover with Kanaria's ENVY BABY

I updated the eyes and eyelashes on this Kuroha x ENVY BABY crossover by making it consistent with my current art style. I also redrew the sleeves slightly.

I think I'll just post my old doodles since it'll be quicker to splotch rough colours on this doodle for now.

Once I do, I'll redraw stuff like the balloons and card and placement of the hearts and stuff.

I'll be cleaning up the 1st doodle and fill in the rough colours for it soon. I'm planning to take my time with my doodles. I'm planning to combine motifs from both Outer Science and ENVY BABY.

The truth is that I had 4 composition ideas but I think I'll only get the time to draw one of them. It'd be fun to try drawing the others in the future (whenever I get the time further down along the road).

I was gonna post the WIP of the Outer Science gen-fanart doodle I'm working on, but it'd spoil the surprise of my composition, so I'll post it whenever it's ready ^^

It'll be super fun to surprise people with my composition. It has mild artistic horror 😌 The sketch is only half-way done so far, so I'll take my time with it.

I also included the doodle of Manga Route 2 Kuroha/Saeru that I really like ^^

Kuroha Doodle

When I first came back to KagePro in late April, I drew this doodle inspired by Kagerou Daze VII -from the darkness-

I imagined yellow cords and ropes tied around him, similar to Azami in the Outer Science MV

This was my first recent KagePro doodle in a long time.

KagePro LN 7 has my fave LN cover. I love it soooo much 💞

Sidu has a brilliant aesthetic sense. The way Kuroha and Azami are drawn in this... Omg...

I still like some parts, but I'd probably redraw it to make it consistent with my current art style

I'm gonna answer mostly based on the songs that are available on EN because I'm not up to date with what songs are on JP. Also this response ended up being pretty long and detailed, hope you don't mind! (putting it under cut for that reason. it is a seriously long answer because I have Thoughts)

Commission songs

Leo/need: Flyaway or Teratera orrrr Voices. These are actually the only l/n comms I even really like. Voices only started to grow on me after hearing the Luka and Shiho cover of it. Writing this answer made me go check out the full version of Teratera for the first time and they really left the best parts out of the game huh. So maybe if I have to pick one it's Teratera.

More More Jump!: Parasol Cider 100000000%! what a banger honestly. Had that stuck in my head for hours on end during the event and did not mind it one bit

Vivid BAD SQUAD: Maybe Ready Steady? I'm a Giga enjoyer and the VBS covers have been pretty nice Hitsuji ga Ippiki is a close second though! If I was including the JP songs then Beyond the Way I forgot about Moodlight. Moonlight is my favourite, the melancholic vibes will always be number one for me (this is in no way foreshadowing for the rest of this list, no way)

Wonderland x Showtime: I am in hell, truly, trying to pick just one and not every single one. Back when I started playing proseka for the first time I really adored Tondemo Wonders and it's still one of my favourites out of all proseka songs along with Potatoes but. This one is definitely between Mr Showtime and Donna Ketsumatsu. The angst of both of these songs, the melancholy!! I think it's gotta be Mr. Showtime though, I prefer the style of music of that song over Donna Ketsumatsu.

25-ji, Nightcord de: Since Kitty is not yet released on EN, this is easy, it's Samsa. I absolutely lose it whenever that song plays anywhere (my friends can testify to me going nuts at a con when a dance group doing N25 dance covers started playing Samsa). Used to listen to this song daily and I even read Metamorphosis thanks to liking the song so much (knowing the plot adds a lot to the song imo). Honestly love almost all of N25 comms though!

VIRTUAL SINGER: I'm including this here just so I have a reason to put ÅMARA on this list. What a banger. Wish I didn't suck at stair notes so bad because I would be playing this on expert all the time otherwise

Leo/need: Ok so. Lost One's Weeping is probably my first favourite vocaloid song ever and I want to put it as my favourite for that reason alone but. Dramaturgy because I am also a huge fan of Eve due to, you might have guessed, the melacholy vibes. Also the Ichika cover of that is very pretty! Lost and Found is also a top contender, somehow I don't yet hate it due to how much it gets spammed by tierers

More More Jump!: This would maybe be Darling Dance except I don't really like the MMJ cover. Same with Vampire. So the answer is Viva Happy (Mitchie M my beloved. Best at tuning Kaito if you ask me)

Vivid BAD SQUAD: I actually like every single one of the cover songs so far on EN. Maybe Bring It On? unsurprisingly Aun no Beats is a close contender lmao. I really like kagepro songs and I'd like to include them here but they did something to the drums in the proseka versions that I don't vibe with at all.

Wonderland x Showtime: I thought I was in hell before... Nonsense Bungaku comes to mind first along with Goodbye Declaration. Honestly I don't think they have a single bad cover... You know what I'm gonna make an exception and use a song that's not on EN yet, I think my fav cover from wxs is Childish War (though they missed a huge fucking opporturnity by not making it a Ena and Akito cover, seriously). That song is like the second or third vocaloid song I ever liked, so it has a special place in my heart, enough so that I'm planning on doing a pair cosplay of the Kagamine twins in it with a friend (also the og MV art is by Miwashiba!! I love their games and art a lot!) I think it's a superb cover, Tsukasa yelling it is very fitting and all that.

25-ji, Nightcord de: Phony, no questions asked. N25 has a ton of great covers but Phony is just Good.

I made a list of songs I wanted in the game ages ago so I'll pull from that (there's a lot sjbceolcjr) (in unit order as well)

Leo/Need:

Raspberry Monster (Honeyworks) - Ichika, Saki and Miku

This list was made before Summertime Record got announced so IchiSaki hadn't had a cover in ages. I still think this song is very likely, if not for L/N at least in game, since Honeyworks now has two commissions in game.

Tokyo Teddy Bear (Neru) - full unit + Rin or Ichika, Shiho and Rin

I do think TTB for Nightcord could also work as you said, but I've seen a lot of people want it for L/N as well. Honestly just IchiShiho and Rin is probably more likely.

Nobody Makes Sense (PinocchioP) - full unit

As a PinocchioP fan I believe we need more of his songs in game, and this one gives the feel of something Leo/Need would sing.

Fireflies Never Came (Harumaki Gohan) - full unit

I also believe we need more Harumaki Gohan in game (seriously why do we only have Melty Land Nightmare and Moonlight I need more Sega).

I'm Saying Farewell to that Rock-and-Roll You (TUYU) - full unit

One listen to this and I instantly went "this is a Leo/Need song". Also we need more TUYU and IchiHona killed it in "As The Morning Glory Falls".

Seraphim On The Ring (Mitchie M) - Minori, Airi and Miku (possibly Rin?)

Ok this is the last Mitchie M song I swear. This could probably be Minori and anyone but I think Airi works best.

Shounen Brave (Jin) - Minori, Haruka and (possibly) Miku

This is definitely the most out there choice on this list so let me explain. Shounen Brave is my favourite KagePro song and I really want it in game (this won't happen). Should it get a cover I think Minori and Haruka could fit considering the song's story and also when thinking of possible duets for this song they fit best singer wise. This song will never happen but let me imagine it will.

Vivid Bad Squad:

Wave (Niki) - full unit

In a direct contrast to the last song, I NEED this to be in game. If nothing else on this list happens I want this. I have thought about this for ages. No Vocaloid in this song it needs to be unit only. (In all seriousness I will be happy as long as all four of them get to sing it but even if it's a duet I'm fine. Just put Niki in the game).

Shun-Ran (John) - Akito, Toya and Miku

Yes Miku. Let her sing with the guys. This song is fairly popular so it's likely it'll get in and AkiToya will destroy it.

Outer Science (Jin) - An, Toya and Miku

The lack of male/female duets in this game will be my villain origin story, nevermind the fact both of them went to WxS. I know the whole thing is that Vivids and Bad Dogs are the sub units but it's sad seeing the m/f duos stuck to alt vocals and archives only since Junky Night Town shows that they can work. Also this one is a fairly popular choice among people wishing for VBS m/f duets and they're right for it.

Shama (NILFRUITS) - Kohane, Akito and possibly Luka

Luka is here because they most likely won't allow them to sing on their own. Anyways I saw this mentioned once and fell in love with the idea is it obvious I like AkiKoha.

Ochatime (33.exe) - Kohane, An and Miku

YY was adorable so I say give them more 33.exe songs. Also we better get a VBS 33.exe comm at some point.

just went back to listen to kuusou forest because that was the first kagepro song I listened to like 4 years ago ,, I remember in august 2020 my sister basically forced me to get into kagepro and the series would occupy my brain for like 2.5 years after that. it was all I would ever think about and I was extremely deep into it I genuinely know so much about kagepro. even if I'm not as into it anymore, this series helped me through a lot. it was the thing that got me to start drawing, that was pretty cool of it :3 specifically anything about seto and mary tho is like the best part of kagepro to me. novel 8 lives rent free in my head and honestly maybe I'll reread that tonight. novel 8 is probably my favourite piece of kagepro media, and in general one of my favourite books. I love it very much ,,,,,,,,,,cries

I think she's nice tho she's kinda 'inbetween' on popularity where a lot of ppl hear of her but other than a 'top' composer using her she doesn't show up as often. i think japan stil has concert/events for her but it's not as promoted as much as miku merch

IA's voice isn't exactly my favourite so i don't seek her out too much tbh,, i keep a couple of kaoling or nanahoshi kangengakudan songs around to listen to every once in a while but that's about it

My favourite fan-cover of Additional Memory~ ❤️

I’m going to show this fan-cover ft. Denatsu Sora, a UTAU made by creator Rhea/Ragey. The fan-cover is mixed and tuned by Minoru.

Sora is my fave UTAU from an EN-speaking fan creator. Her voice and tuning are SO powerful.

The OG by Miku is more fit to the melancholic an somber tone of the song, but I prefer this fan-cover for the voice and tuning quality. It’s SO good. Denatsu Sora has an amazing powerful voice and growls.

Ragey has one of the most powerful UTAUs I’ve ever heard. I’m blown away by how strong the tuning and voice are in Sora's voice???

Minoru did an excellent job mixing and tuning Sora for this song.

Intro

Outer Science is song no. 14 of KagePro that released in August 2013.

2 years later...

Additional Memory is song no. 16, Ayano's song, that released on September 14, 2018.

It's about Ayano's feelings of grief and regret.

It is one of my top fave KagePro songs and MVs, cuz despite the simpler compositions in it, the visuals and video editing are absolutely gorgeous.

I think Additional Memory might just be my 2nd favourite KagePro MV. I love it sm…

I was originally planning to post my Outer Science doc first, but since it's so long it has to be split into multiple parts, I might as well post this one first.

未来の走馬灯 (Mirai no soumatou) The flashing images of my future

How the backgrounds in the beginning and in the chorus keeps flashing/transitioning between each other as a reference to the “revolving lantern” (走馬灯, Soumatou) → Referring to the phenomenon of “images flashing before your eyes (before death)”

Soumatou (走馬灯) → The lyric “Flashing images of my future”

The entire MV is very literally flashing images of Ayano’s “future” (death) by having the backgrounds of the school constantly flashing/transitioning between each other

Because, after Ayano’s death, her classmates set up flower vases on all the desks in remembrance of her and to honour her memory

I'm so sure this MV is using something powerful like Ad*be After Effects. Or at least something similar

It’s also possible Blender is being used for the effects with the 3D flowers and desks

In the beginning, Ayano unwillingly watches the memories of her and Shintaro in the red sunset in the Kagerou Daze (this exact scene being a parallel to Losstime Memory).

Ayano reaches out for Shintaro's hand for comfort and Shintaro rejects Ayano's affection (and regrets it after her death)

I love how the camera is panning through the field of flowers (chrysanthemums)

Sidu's MVs are so fucking brilliant

So good, holy fuck...

In the beginning, Ayano's scarf moves much slower.

The way the screen splits in half and the blood splatters... They match the colour of her scarf...

Also in the animation effects where the screen splits in half, I love the action speed lines...

With the blood splatters scene, too, her scarf gets blown in the wind slower.

But during the majority of the chorus, it gets blown around in the wind much faster.

Ayano stands in a field of chrysanthemum flowers, where classroom desks fill up the ceiling above her.

Sidu's sketchy style is so good. For each frame, she sketches different sketchy lines, and putting all these frames together evokes the feeling of movement. But Sidu does it so perfectly, it feels like moving action lines

The chrysanthemums moving up and in and out of view (some getting closer to the camera) really does give a 3D effect

The colour grading and chromatic abberation effects in this MV... Omg...

The classroom desks in the sky are also slowly falling out of place into disarray. The “sky” is breaking apart.

Because of the 3D classroom desks filling up the “ceiling” or “sky” and the 3D chrysanthemums.

...

Ayano wears a red scarf because she was always inspired by the heroes she saw in cartoons and aspires to be a good, protective older sister for her siblings (the original trio, Kido, Seto, and Kano).

In the song, Ayano's Theory of Happiness, there's this lyric:

”Red capes are for heroes”

...

I love the use of minimal colours in this MV, it's mainly in black, white and red cast with dark shadows and gradients.

(Aside from certain background shots like the red sunset with ShinAya, and the blue sky of the rooftop)

Sidu MUST be using something really powerful to make these MVs, like Ad*be After Effects.

Especially since the KagePro MVs are professional animation projects, they're storyboarded and everything.

And this explains Ayano's and the ShinAya ship's HEAVY paper crane symbolism...

The transition to the blue sky dropping down and casting Ayano in muted, somber blue tones is so perfect

Also thinking about how Ayano has her arms the same way a corpse would be during a funeral with the flowers around her…

Parallels

I first watched this MV as a kid at 12 years old.

So I want to put a few things here just for visual comparison.

So, one more thing I thought about was how, years later, Additional Memory decided to parallel the scene from Losstime Memory where Shintaro sees a vision of Ayano falling from the school rooftop upside down.

Ayano's Feelings and ShinAya Subtext

“I always wanted to say ‘Goodbye, I love you’”

Burnt out gifted kid and cynical pessimist who didn't see any meaning in his life cuz he'd always ace everything and felt that even if he disappeared, then someone would replace him

So Ayano always tried to cheer him up. She’d take his ripped up test papers and tape them back to make paper cranes for him, and she would fold papers into paper cranes for him.

This is Ayano's Kagerou Daze (how the Kagerou Daze appears to her). It takes the form of the school in which she spent her happiest and saddest days, and where she died.

I love how all the classroom desks form the "Sky" of her Kagerou Daze

Misc Rambles

Something about the way Ayano will sacrifice herself for the sake of a loved one... In the hopes that it'd stop Saeru's plans so that her family and friends won't be targeted...

And Ayano's association with the colour RED.

Shintaro

Shintaro was a burnt out gifted kid that didn't see the point in living after his friends (especially Ayano) died and was just waiting to die

Ene tried to inspire hope in him by becoming his friend, acting more cheerful and optimistic on person (after remembering her friend Ayano's words that Shintaro needed someone cheerful and optimistic and outgoing to carry him along).

After Ayano's death, Shintaro fed into his cynical pessimism and shut himself off even more and was constantly dreaming of coming to meet Ayano

Kuroha/Saeru, in most routes, is almost always indirectly responsible for their deaths. He is indirectly responsible for/orchestrated their deaths in most routes (ie. Music Route, Manga Route 1, and Novel Route, Anime Route)

The only time Kuroha/Saeru isn’t indirectly responsible for the Yuukei Quartet's deaths in some way, is in Manga Route 2 Iirc

One thing you'll learn about KagePro is that this mf (Kuroha/Saeru) is responsible for almost everything bad that happens. He's literally the cause for the majority of KagePro's conflict/tension

Wow OMG FREAKING YES Lost Time Memory for me too!! ❤❤❤ I'm just so basic but my reason is because that is THE ShinAya Song ❤❤ well besides that, the guitar part just really screamed Jin's song, y'know. Also because of the MV, it wasn't just an MV, it was freaking phenomenal!! I love everything about it, the song, the direction, the symbolism, the whole aesthetic, ugh *chef's kiss* still the BEST KagePro song ever made, I think.

It was starting from Lost Time Memory MV that really inspired me to actually do art more seriously... this song and MV just means a lot to me ❤

Additional Memory is a close second, you can just hear Jin's improvement but still managing that signature KagePro-feel. But still, LTM is my favourite all the way. (You can just see I haven't changed my PFP in YEARS, HHH THAT'S HOW MUCH I LOVE IT)

kagepro - this one’s rlly hard to nail down but uh the scene where shintaro remembers all the other timelines. specifically from the anime

pokemon - when satoshi won the pokemon league in the anime :’) i cried, it made me so happy. 

bna - 100% when michiru is dropped off the building and shirou goes to save her and then is Actually Hurt. it was a weird feeling, seeing shirou bleed like that, but it made me realize that he is capable of getting hurt, which scares me. it was beautifully animated. i think it’s super lovely and shows how they worry for each other even if they don’t rlly like to say it. he instantly ran after her, and when they both were on the ground she instantly checks if he’s okay and helps him out. i feel like she could have just done the thing where she makes her tail super big though? although it’d probably have to get super big to protect her from that height so

I don’t really have one! I tend to watch certain youtubers only while I’m in certain phases. Like right now I’ve started watching Sims videos? Don’t ask me why. Before it was bright hair dyeing and makeup videos. I will always appreciate people who make compilations of cute relationship moments from TV shows and stuff tho. They’re living their best life and I’m lovin it.
