STARING SO HARD... i have NO idea who i might want to do this with but i think I'm gonna go with Bolearis?? bc I don't talk abt him nearly enough-- more under the cut!
note: this was actually so much fun to write i keep forgetting how much i love writing HDSFJFD
Bolearis/Estil (Xenoblade OC) + First Kiss
It was a day like any other day, really. The hot desert sands of where Colony 4 was located brought about dust and dirt, as well as limited supplies - water being the most important. Estil, ever vigilant in his duties, continued checking the supplies that they did manage to have; sweat covering his brow from the long hours outside.
"Mm..." Estil mumbled to himself, frowning. "Of course we're out of that... and that... where is that damn supply drop..."
"Hey, Estil."
Estil turned around at the sound of Bolearis' voice - his boss and... whatever else they had going on. It was a little tense in Estil's eyes - were they friends? Maybe? But then if they were friends, then why would Bolearis throw his arms around him all the time and -
"Hello? Estil, you in there?"
"Hm-? Oh, sorry, sir. Just a little lost in thought."
"Yeah, I could tell..." Bolearis glanced at the paperwork in Estil's hands. "Still doing supply checks? The drop is supposed to be tomorrow, you know."
"Ah, is it...?"
Bolearis frowned and took a step closer to notice the bags under Estil's eyes and the sweat around their forehead - he also seemed a little faint.
"Hey, are you- woah!" Bolearis began, before catching Estil as he started swaying on his feet. His wings that crowned his head were drooped in exhaustion, and Estil felt incredibly weak.
"S-Sorry, Bolearis... Guess it caught up with me..."
Bolearis looked at the collapsed soldier in his arms with sudden panic in his eyes. Estil's face was pale, his eyes were clenched tight in pain. Pushed himself too hard again... Bolearis thought, electing to carry him back to the shared quarters.
A few hours later, Estil had woken up in his cot, a cool towel pressed against his forehead. The room still spun, but not nearly as bad. He tried to sit up, but another hand gently pushed him back down.
"Sir...?" Estil mumbled, Bolearis' face coming into focus.
"Ah, none of that. Are you okay? The heat really did a number on ya..."
"I'm-"
"And don't say you're fine!" Bolearis retorted, frowning. "You keep workin' yourself too hard..."
He sighed and sat back down on the floor next to Estil's bed. Estil looked away, unsure of how to react. Bolearis was silent for a moment, then he continued: "It isn't just you in the colony, you know. You can pass off jobs if it's too much."
"It's not too much, Bolearis, just..." Estil's wings fluttered as he thought. "The weather isn't the best for me right now, and with the stress of the supplies being scarce..."
Bolearis' expression looked slightly pained - he knew how hard it had been on everyone whenever they were free from the Clock, but pushing forward and trying to survive was their only option.
"I'm sorry, sir, things just got away from me. It won't happen again." Estil said, regaining his sense of surroundings. His head pounded, but at least he didn't feel faint again.
"I told you to quit it with that, Estil..." Bolearis replied, sighing. "You know we're not... that it's... well, it's different. With you, I mean."
"Bolearis..." Estil couldn't look at him. Not in the eye, at least. He had spent countless hours thinking of him, unsure of what was really happening, and for Bolearis to come out and say it...
"Just... take care of yourself better, alright? I don't wanna catch you falling again." Bolearis then stood up, placing his hand on the towel that lay on Estil's forehead. "Oh, it's warm. Are you... sure you're feeling okay?"
Bolearis moved the towel and placed his hand on Estil's forehead. Estil's wings fluttered almost in protest, but he didn't say anything. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine."
"Okay, if you're sure." Bolearis leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Estil's forehead. Estil's eyes widened - the moment lasted for only a split second, but it felt like a lifetime. Bolearis pulled away from him and began to walk out of the sleeping quarters.
All Estil could do was watch him leave, still trying to process everything and - wait.
Were they friends or not!?

@estiles sent:
Just like he had placed his arm around her shoulder, she now did the same with his. Merrin's intentions were much different than his but despite his behavior being un-knightly most of the time she happened to kind of like the guy. "Hello Sir Sain." A smile matched her casual approach to him, they were... knight buddies of sorts, one day they'd have a title that fit them but she didn't wish to think of it much right now. "Admiring beauties as you say it?"
She too liked women, not in the same intensity as him—thank to the Divine One she didn't—but she too could enjoy their beauty. "Though if it's like the time you tried flirting with me, i can assume you're not getting further than that." One had to be bold to even try doing that, specially to someone you barely knew, but there was some sort of cool to the confidence it took—but truly, only the confidence was impressive in all this.
“Oh? If it isn’t my adorable coworker!”
Sain is receptive to the arm slung around his shoulder, giving Merrin’s hand a quick squeeze to signal that he appreciates her presence. Lightning dances from his arm to hers when he does, igniting a spark inside the elemental-made catalyst and stoking a flame on her vine necklace. Their pact is sealed, their bond forged in thunder. What follows is a laugh as light as it is friendly. She’s an interesting one, that Merrin.
“On the contrary, I’ve been plenty lucky scoring a few dates. One decadent beauty sought me out because she found me alone, and another wanted to hold hands and create miracles!” The idea that any attention is good attention twists Sain’s stories into being more than what they truly are. The intentions of both women in reference are each a far cry from what he’s implying, but a man can dream—and he can certainly lie to make himself look good. He turns a teasing smirk to the she-knight, noting a distinct lack of women by her side.
“And what of you, dear? Seeing as how you’ve decided to speak with me, you must be pretty lonely… Ah, don’t tell me: you wish to be mentored.” The innocence in his smile returns, and Sain claps his hands together. One could call him a hare by how fast he jumps to conclusions. “I’m an expert in the field of wooing women, as you might have guessed.”
Stopping to survey the rest of the ball, Sain looks for a potential practice partner to throw Merrin at. “Hmm… There!” His finger shoots out in front of him, pointing to a woman clad in an orange dress. “Ahh, the way her hair flows… How radiant! Try gracing her ears with the following: ‘My beloved, the stars in your eyes have charted my course to you. Take my hand, and no longer shall we be lost from one another.’”
✢⁎. bang-bang! down-down!

Note
what are the pro hunt articles on the shelley/hunt portrait you were talking about on oct 6? also whats your opinion on the portrait now?
Thanks for the ask! Long post ahead.
Newman Ivey White's 1940 Shelley biography is what started the pro-Hunt theory, but it was also defended by Estill Curtis Pennington in the works "William Edward West, 1788-1857 Kentucky Painter" and “Painting Lord Byron: An Account by William Edward West" — these are probably what I was referring to. In some works on Byron portraiture I believe the Shelley/Hunt thing is sometimes mentioned in passing but I don't remember exact works. I've read too much about LB & his public image.
Overall, I would like to believe it's Shelley, but I'm still waiting for Stauffer's new work to come out before I'm 100% convinced bc I don't want to get my hopes up. I have also thought maybe it could've been someone else, ie Shelley's friend Edward Williams — there's a portrait of Williams by George Clint which looks VERY similar to this mystery portrait, but it was done posthumously, I believe at the bequest of his wife Jane's memory, more than a decade after his death — and it doesn't look much like any of the other portraits of Williams either. So the similarity could be a coincidence.
If West was telling the truth when he said he met Shelley, etc., (not much reason to doubt him, but White and Pennington do) then it would make sense for it to be of Shelley, but since his wife Mary tried hard to acquire all the portraits of him, it is a little strange that she and the rest of the Shelley family did not acquire it or ever claim it as far as I know, and that it isn't more popular in general. This is one of the things preventing me from believing it's Shelley, although I'm 90% convinced, especially after reading Stauffer say in one of the recent articles that gray paint pigments were used on the hair but are only discernible up close (Shelley was said to be going gray early, despite his still youthful appearance).
A friend of mine said something about not understanding what the big deal was about this portrait, or why I was interested in it. In a few words I tried telling him about the importance (in general, but especially for famous historical figures, and especially the Romantic poets) of portraiture, artwork, public representation, image, style, persona, material culture, and how Shelley and Byron's portrait representations have always been a particularly big deal for their legacies, especially in the Victorian era where literary collectors turned Byronalia and Shelleyana into saint-like relics and their images were fetishized.
But I don't know. I think the vast majority of people don't really care about the historical legacies of famous dead writers, let alone their portraits. But I do. If I love a writer or historical figure, of course I want to know what they looked like. My overactive imagination is dying to have as accurate a conception of them as possible.
I'd like to think it is Shelley since we have so few representations of him and they're all vastly different, and this one presents him in the most flattering and artful light, in a way that we can easily imagine Mary having ran off with him, whereas the famous Curran portrait was said by all to not look anything like him (although I don't think it's super unflattering), and the portrait work of Williams, Curran, and Marianne Hunt just aren't as skillful as that of West.

Episode 22: Laura Estill on Dramatic texts, Commonplace books, and Profane & debauched atheists
Tumblr media
“Profane, & Debaucht Atheists” (Bodleian MS Sancroft 29, p. 1)
In Episode 22 of Inside My Favorite Manuscript, Dot and Lindsey talk with Laura Estill about Bodleian MS Sancroft 29. Archbishop of Canterbury William Sancroft (1617-1693) was an avid reader and collector of extracts from various works. MS Sancroft 29 is one of many manuscripts in his hand that survives; it is a dramatic commonplace books, that is, it contains bits and pieces of many plays that Sancroft read most of them from the century before Sancroft lived, including Shakespeare. We learned so much about the reception of drama in the seventeenth century, and we hope you enjoy listening to our conversation.

The Estil Invasion of Earth
A/N: This fic is a crossover with SillyLittleCoffe's interactive web serial Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest).
_ _ _
"Coast is clear, Lavinia," a woman called in a singsong tone to her companion after stepping out of what looked like an old police box, "If the TARDIS scanner didn't convince you of that, a walk outside ought to." This woman herself however looked nothing like any police new or old. Instead, her dark coat and dress more resembled a cross between a Heian noble and an undertaker, complimented by her pale, ashy skin and long, raven black hair.
Her companion Lavinia, a much meeker girl with glasses and braids, more gradually stepped outside of the box called the TARDIS and onto the vast spaceship the two had found themselves in. "I guess I can only think of the last time we stepped onto a spaceship we thought was deserted, it... well you remember how it went, Doctor," she muttered.
"Well then, that should make us all the more prepared for whatever may lurk on this ship, a chance to learn from our mistakes," said the raven-haired woman only identified as Doctor. "Besides," she added as she took out a metal wand and aimed it at some sort of security camera, "I never said we had this whole place to ourselves, now did I? Just that there was nobody in the immediate area. Oh, and as for 'ship', it could be a moonbase for all we know, given its proximity to your home."
Lavinia only looked so reassured by the Doctor's words, but then her face lit up as she took in the design of this place, particularly the large window from which, as The Doctor had said, she could see Earth from above. "You said we landed in the 2020s, right Doctor? Then could this be... how far human technology has come? I'd guess I'd be in my eighties by now down there, if well, everything between you and me hadn't happened," Lavinia mused.
Those words made The Doctor smile, but then sigh. "Afraid to burst your bubble, Lavinia dear, but human spaceflight hasn't advanced that far yet. They'll need another thousand or so years in the future for that, ah, I should jot down a reminder for our next trip," she said. Lavinia nodded and smiled as within her heart sank. The Doctor however went on, "No, what we have here is an alien craft, or no, perhaps it is an Earthling ship after all. Of 'heretical' Estil make, I presume."
"Wait, heretical? Earthling?" Lavinia's brows raised as she asked, then gasped. "Doctor, you're not suggesting we're aboard a demon spaceship? I... honestly wouldn't put one past the universe at this point."
"Believe me, Lavinia, were we on a Daemon ship you wouldn't need me to tell you. No, there's nothing demonic about the Estil, for as many criticisms I may have of their civilisation," The Doctor said, then smirked. "'Heretic' is a little Gallifreyan joke of mine. Growing up on my planet, you have it drilled into your head from the moment you're loomed that our people banished all magic from their universe at the dawn of time. The Estil, who proclaim themselves magic users, fiercely disagree."
"So, they don't really use magic, do they?" Lavinia asked. Getting lost in thought for a second, she then said, "I guess magic has always felt wonderful to me, but when you take it out of storybooks and into real life, it sounds like it could get pretty scary. I've seen that time travel, psychic powers, and other worlds all exist, but can be really scary when they're not just a tale you're being told."
"Cautious as ever, Lavinia, not that I can blame you for that. But as for if the Estil do in fact have magic, I was about to say, 'I believe it when I have the proof'. But I feel that rather goes against the spirit of magic, wouldn't you agree?" The Doctor said, lifting her companion's chin. "Now, as for what I mean by Earthling-"
"Halt, who goes there?!" barked a piercing voice with a surprisingly pint-sized owner, a young redhead alien. "You face Rins Es Talis, weapon specialist of the Estil armada! I don't know how you got here, but you've trespassed right into the heart of Estil operations! Expect no mercy- no wait, did Zaiyu bring you here without telling us? Sure sounds like something he'd do."
"Well, first off," The Doctor glared at Rins and walked forward, "Not only do you so rudely interrupt me, but you further insult me by brandishing a gun while doing so." Heavy as the gun that Rins carried may have looked, The Doctor was able to swiftly pull it away... but only for the Estil to immediately pull out another gun.
"Yeah, Zaiyu's definitely up to something with you. Mitl wouldn't bring anyone that wasn't a corpse or freaky plant on board, and no way would the Captain let people just wander off," Rins said, nodding all the while. "He told us he met these girls on Earth, one of them with long black hair and another who'd mutilated her hair into braids. Hah, 'Tomoe' and 'Suzune' he called you, I remember! See, already I've found you two out."
Lavinia was about to say otherwise, but The Doctor pre-emptively whispered to her, "Now, we can't turn down a good alias when it presents itself." She turned back to Rins and said, "Why, you're a sharp young Estil aren't you? Shame about all your firearms. Indeed, Tomoe and Suzune, that's us."
"B-but I'm not even Japanese," Lavinia now whispered in The Doctor's ear, "And what does he mean, 'mutilated my hair'?"
"And I'm not even Earthling. Point is, these Estil don't know that" The Doctor whispered back, but then said at her normal volume, "As for mutilation, Suzune dear, Estil biology is unique in that they have sensory organs in their hair, though certain castes undertake the endurance rites of cutting or braiding theirs. Our Rins must think of you as getting above your station. All of which Mr. Zaiyu so graciously told us," she smirked, like the pieces were coming into place.
Rins then had to glare as their eyes scanned The Doctor. "Seems that's not all he shared with you, 'cause that's looks like a sonic screwdriver! That's space-tech, well, very basic space-tech, every alien society has them, nothing on my sonic-proof weapons. But yeah, not anything you humans should've developed by now," they said, then added after thinking a little more, "Wait, he said you were heir to the 'Sa-ku-ra-zu-ka' megacorp, so the only answer is you;re already developing space-tech."
"Trade secret, Rins darling," The Doctor smirked again, touching her nose, "but I'll at least credit Zaiyu with being kind enough to give us a few pointers."
Rins twitched, at not only Zaiyu but also Doctor 'Tomoe', they could tell when they were being talked down to. "Meeting room, now. The Captain will hear about you two," they said, tapping out an electronic message while doing so.
"Alright, alright. But I would not rate you highly on hospitality if this is how you treat all your guests," The Doctor said, holding Lavinia's arm as an incensed Rins had them march.
As they entered into the base's spacious meeting room, another Estil suddenly joined them, a slumped over scientist whose shaggy hair looked about to swallow him. "Another meeting's no surprise," he mumbled, "but while Zaiyu's still on Earth? Not that I'm concerned with him, I'd rather get back to my plants. Still, unusual."
"Zaiyu shall be dealt with, for Rins has reported evidence that he has both smuggled humans aboard our base and given them technology without our approval," the Captain said, him being tall and with his hair in a floor-length braid per his station. "Now human, I am Captain Shayin Es Talis. Would I be addressing Tomoe of the Sakurazuka corporation and her affiliate Suzune Takao?"
"The very same. We are multi-millionaires!" The Doctor said, with Lavinia thinking she was now a little too into the act.
"Really? Then let us see if that holds up to a bio-scan," Shayin said, with The Doctor and Lavinia being met with a sudden flash of green light. Before The Doctor could reply something like 'How invasive', Shayin's eyes widened on seeing the scan's results. "This 'Suzune' is normal for what we've been told of her species, but the one calling herself 'Tomoe' possesses... two hearts."
"Actually," Lavinia spoke up to keep the cover story going, "Most humans have two hearts, I... had to have surgery to remove one when I was younger. It's been a while though, so the scar's hard to make out."
"Only way we can be sure is if we send someone other than Zaiyu down to check," Shayin said, with Mitl instantly raising his hand at the chance of getting to dissect human corpses. "Although there is another explanation, that you are the only species universally known for having two hearts: a Gallifreyan."
Rins gave another glare at The Doctor. "Ooh, if you're Gallifreyan then no way would Zaiyu want anything to do with you. You're the ones that say magic isn't real, aren't you?"
"Gallifreyans, hmm, aren't those are the people who can 'regenerate'? Because them not staying dead just makes us necromancers' jobs even harder," Mitl said.
"Yeah, us Estil only get one life," Rins said while overlooking that a necromancer was right there, "so we can't afford to get soft like you Gallifreyans."
"But if you are Gallifreyan, then why are you with a human girl? Your kind doesn't associate with other races unless they violate the Laws of Time," Shayin asked as he peered closer, then insisted, "Which I have not, as a Pilot of the Estil I always take utmost caution when it comes to weaving time's fabrics."
The Doctor hesitated for a moment, but tried to turn the situation around with, "Hmhm, very good, though a little defensive there. Of course, you're overlooking something. Not all of 'my kind' are shackled to Gallifrey, quite a number of us have gone rogue. It's a surprise more haven't, given how stifling the place is. Anyway, it's perfectly possible that I can be both Tomoe Sakurazuka and a Gallifreyan who's settled on Earth, or the daughter of one, granddaughter even."
Shayin had to think that over. "Again, we have no proof, but if there are rogue Gallifreyans on Earth, then..." he muttered, "then that complicates matters. In fact, I can recall one rogue Gallifreyan whose title is infamous throughout the cosmos."
"My, do tell," The Doctor lit up.
Shayin took a deep breath and spoke, "...The Master. Could they be the one behind the Sakurazuka?"
That wiped the smile immediately off the Doctor's face. "The Master, really? Out of all rogue Time Lords to title drop..." she sighed.
"Just as long as it's not The Rani again," Lavinia said.
The Doctor's usual smirk then came back as she said, "Oh, but humans and Gallifreyans aren't the only ones you face," with her peering right back at Shayin.
"It's not the Daleks, is it?" Mitl then groaned, "Such a one-note species. At least Cybermen are technically zombies, oh yes, and the Krynoids, I like those."
"Do not dare make light of the Daleks in front of your Captain," Shayin then scolded Mitl, "You haven't faced them in battle as I have."
"Ahem, I believe I was the one talking," The Doctor said, then went on, "As I was saying, Estil and humans aren't the only species to have been the dominant civilisations of Earth. There was another in between you, the Silurians, who fled underground just as you fled to the stars. If you invade Earth, you also face them. Suppose the three of you will just have to learn to share, won't you, Shayin dear?"
Shayin had clutched his head a lot throughout this meeting like his braid was giving him a headache, but now he clutched even harder. "Alright then, Suzune, 'Tomoe'. We'll let you head back down to Earth, but under the supervision of one of us, that way we can have hard evidence that all your claims are true. Zaiyu's loyalties are in doubt, and Mitl is... always best kept under close watch, so you shall accompany these two, Rins."
The Doctor had to groan. "To be saddled with the gun-nut soldier instead of the scientist, just my luck," she said.
"Oi, I heard that!" Rins piped up.
"Meeting adjourned," Shayin proclaimed, before any more complaints could be made.
Rins then led The Doctor and Lavinia back the way they came. But while the soldier was just out of earshot, The Doctor then whispered to Lavinia, "And that's how you thwart an invasion, my dear, or at least how you begin to. Spreading false intel is key."
"You sure do make it look easy," Lavinia said. "Like you've done this before, even."
The Doctor grinned wide. "My dear, I could go on all day. But that's another story for another time, perhaps?"

Mystery Lights in Estill County
The first time I'd ever heard anything about "mountain ghost lights" in Kentucky was in the early 1980s, when I dated a girl who told me the story of a large floating lights that appear and disappear on several different mountains in Estill County.
I have a lot of kinfolk in the deep-rural area and spent a good chunk of my childhood in this peculiar and spooky place. I thought I'd experienced all there was to experience there but had never heard of this phenomenon. Intrigued by the concept, I fired up the video camera and set about arranging some camping trips in the area so my girlfriend could show me these mystery lights.
The problem-or the charm, if you enjoy tall tales-with mystery lights is that when you do see a weird light on a mountain in front of you, you have no way of immediately verifying anything. I learned this the hard way when I spotted a suspicious light for the first time and started trudging up the hill like Teddy Roosevelt. Of course, I lost sight of the light when I started climbing, and when I finally got to the top, I found nothing. When I slogged my way back to camp, my lady friend reported the light had gone out just as I'd started going up. After that unnecessary exercise, I chose to simply watch and wonder from out vantage point instead of going after the answers.
After a summer of trying, we never did conceive proof of a genuine "ghost light" sighting. I chalked it up to a rural legend and filed the case in that very small section in my mind reserved for things I considered debunked. But the story of this ghost light wouldn't go out. A decade later, while I discussed paranormal matters with a retired gentleman at a flea market in Ravenna, he brought up the mystery lights with no prompting from me. His story placed the lights in Cobb Hill, a totally different area than the one to which my friend had led me. According to him, these lights weren't just stationary or floating, they were darting all around the surface of the mountain like, in his own words, "a hundred pound lightnin' bug."
This leads me to suspect some sort of electromagnetic phenomenon, rather than ghosts or UFOs, but that ain't bad. I have long suspected that some sort of ley lines type of strange energy runs through Estill County, and this could be the first step toward demonstrating that in some palpable way.
I recently spent several nights trying once again to document this phenomenon, to no avail. Because it's such a remote area, there aren't a whole lot of locals with doors to knock on and ask, but I have spoken to others who have indeed heard the rumors of ghost lights, none of whom would go on record as having actually seen them in person. I am determined to not only photograph it, but figure it out. Weird Kentucky will keep you posted.
Sand Mountain's Ghost Lights
Sand Mountain is a towering section of knobbed hills that joins the national forestland of the state. It lies about twelve miles south of Mount Sterling, and is located between the towns of Jeffersonville and Means.
In the early 1900s, before the wide use of automobiles, people in the region near Sand Mountain reported seeing mysterious lights on the steep slopes. Firsthand accounts often claim the lights appeared along the roads and paths of the mountain. They sometimes seemed to follow passing travelers, as if they had an intelligence of their own. One man claimed a ghost light often appeared along a certain stretch of road, hovered in the air, and then vanished.
As the area near Sand Mountain has grown more populated, sightings of the ghost lights decreased. Some have suggested that natural-gas wells may have caused the phenomena but no one really knows for sure. -Troy Taylor

May 2023 FrostProof BIG Bass trip
My young karate champ, Justin Fields and I planned a combined karate – fishing trip. We drove from Thomasville, NC to Estill, SC.    The next morning, we drove to Jacksonville. We reunited with one of my first karate students of 30 years ago, Nolan Clark at a great Thai lunch in Jax, Fla. That night we went to Ocala and trained with my old sparring partner & co-founder of Car-Kai-Ryu = Glenn…
